PENELOPE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TIME IT WAS BUT it was already very dark outside. Natalia and Abby aren't back yet, which makes the brunette bored. Normally at this time she just sits in her room when they're there, but it's a different story when they're not here. Although she often sees this time as optional to do her stuff in peace.
Which is why she decided to clean their apartment a little up.
As her Hazel eyes glide through the kitchen, they stop at the overflowing trash can. A soft sigh escapes her in the pleasant silence. "Hurts me too" by Faye Webster hums gently through the music box, to which she hums quietly.
In moments like these, calm music is her favorite, even if it was more her style of music. The girl listens to music more to relax or when she's doing something like tidying up because it feels more like a reward. The gentle voice of the singer rings through the kitchen as she makes her way to the bucket.
She lifts the trash bag out of the trash can and moves to the door. On the way there she slips into her crocks and turns off the hallway light.
The door opens with a loud crack and she steps out. The door closes on its own, which is why she starts walking straight away not waiting for it to close.
The hallway light is on which means that someone is or was there because it is a motion detector light.
It's only around 10pm so there will still be a few people outside before they get herded in, so she doesn't make much of an effort to be quiet. Even though she does that naturally. Nelly is a rather quiet person. You don't often notice that she is there, which is why her roommates always have to check whether she is still alive or even there.
But that's just her and after a while you get used to it.
She goes down the stairs when she reaches the end of the hallway which makes quiet noises after every step she takes.
The light next to her keeps coming on after she walks past a lamp hanging on the wall. Except for the one at the bottom when she got to it, it's been out for months and no one noticed or cared about it. These are small things that no one notices, but Penelope always pays the most attention to the small details, finding that they are the most important ones in most cases.
Her left hand opens the large entrance door as the garbage bag is in her right. The cool autumn air hits her directly and goosebumps fill the parts of her body that are not covered, which is also the reason why she notices that she doesn't have a jacket on.
But she won't be out in the cold for long so that won't be a big problem.
The brunette goes down the last two small stairs in front of the entrance door and is now walking on the dark campus. She's a little happy that the lanterns are already on. It's pitch dark and she doesn't have her cell phone with her, which means she doesn't have a flashlight either. Not that she doesn't know where to go, but in the dark everyone gets a little uneasy.
Also Nelly even if it doesn't look like it. As the girl calmly walks along the path past a few other people to the garbage cans that are behind the buildings.
If she didn't know the way, at least now she would know that she was close because you could slowly smell it all.
A disgusted grimace appears on her calm face as she turns around the last corner and arrives at the dark garbage corner.
The garbage cans are placed next to each other and have bricks on them so that no raccoons or similar things can get in. She puts the garbage bag down and opens the appropriate garbage can, she lifts the brick with a sigh and looks inside. To their disadvantage, however, it is full. She sighs, louder this time, and lets the flap close again before placing the brick where it was before.
She turns to the next one and does the same, luckily for her there was still some space this time. Nelly grabs her bag from the floor and places it in the trash can as she stands on her toes. When the trash falls in, she lets the cap close again and dusts her hands before putting the brick back on.
Penelope looks around the area, there is some lighting here otherwise it was dark all around. She could smell a bit of smoke as the secret smoking area is not far away, if you're not inside, people use that one.
However, the smell didn't bother her because she doesn't plan to stay here any longer, at least that was the plan.
A quiet meow makes her stop in her movements. The brunette stays silent for a moment to check whether she hasn't misheard, but when she hears another little furrow, her eyebrows furrow and she turns back on her feet. She can't estimate exactly where it's coming from, which is why she quietly listens again.
She turns on her feet and walks back the way she came. The same unsatisfactory smell fills her nose. However, their focus is on the softly audible meowing.
Her plucked eyebrows tighten a little as she looks between the garbage cans, but with her luck she found nothing. Your quiet footsteps find their way to the farthest garbage. Where the little whine gets louder, but only if you really pay attention to it.
Nelly's eyes follow the surface as they land at the drain. A small cat's head comes towards her and she feels her expression softening. Therefore, based on how small the gray cat is, she assumes that it is a baby.
A sigh escapes her lips when she sees the kitten wedged between the manhole gaps and holding on for dear life with her paws. Without a second thought, the brunette comes closer and crouches down to the cat.
A little "shh" escapes her as the kitten meows. She carefully places her hands at her side. Penelope's soft hands come into contact with the shivering kitten, whose fur is now cold, which shows that she has been here for a long time.
The little meows fill the quiet air around them as Nelly carefully pulls the kitten out of the crevice. Her eyes dart around in the small area, making sure that the cat doesn't bump into anything, get trapped further or hurt more than she lifts her out.
After her back paws are out, Penelope relaxes a bit again. The little gray cat in her hands, which has now stopped making noises, is now cuddling up in her arms for warmth.
However, Nelly can't really give her that because she also feels rather cold in the night air. Her heart swells a little at the little thing.
It reminds her a bit of her childhood.
She has always had a heart for strays. Every time she saw one she always stopped. However, her father never liked it, always spoke badly about it and told her not to touch them because they had all sorts of illnesses.
When she is thinking, she strokes the kitten gently. The cold air around you no longer bothers her so much, probably because she's distracted at the moment.
However, she is a little too preoccupied that she doesn't notice another person who has come along. Which never happens to her otherwise because she is usually the most attentive person, as already mentioned.
"Hey doll" a familiar voice sounds and she feels her expression hardening again.
"Never took you for an animal rescuer" she watched him tilt his head at her, his hands in his pockets as he slowly comes some steps closer, revealing himself more with every step into the light.
"She was stuck" Penelopes gently voice sounds up in the quiet air, unlocking a chuckle from the guy in front of her.
"I saw" Matt nods reassuring, "didn't say it was a bad thing."
The silence between the two is loud but somehow not. The two of them walk along the path that is illuminated by light. The kitten is still in Penelope's arms, but shaking less.
Matt's hands are still in his pockets as his eyes occasionally wander to the quiet girl next to him. Her hair falls gently over her shoulders as her left hand strokes the small animal in her arms for comfort.
Despite this, the two of them have one goal, to get to Samuel. And that wasn't just anyone. Samuel was the guy who looked after and checked on the horses at the stable. And in cases like these, where you find an animal, you also turn to him, he's there for that sort of thing.
He's also nice, he's relatively young, around 24, and has been working here since the beginning, it used to be his part-time job, now it's his full-time job.
He gets enough money from the private school to look after the animals every day, but he also has a high expectation that nothing will happen to them.
But the young man is very trustworthy and nice; in a survey no one would say that they don't like him.
Which is why Nelly and Matt's feet carry them to the stables, where Samuel has his little place to stay so that he can always be reached in case of emergencies.
They just hope he's still awake because otherwise they wouldn't know what to do with the kitten. They didn't say it out loud, but they both know it.
The wind rushes around the two of them as they walk side by side, with more than enough distance between them.
After everything, the brunette isn't so cold anymore, at least she doesn't notice the goosebumps on her arms because her focus is on the cat in her arms.
It's quiet around them, no other person can be seen, on the way to the stables, of course, they met a few people near the dorms. Nelly knows that Samuel has to get up early to take care of the horses, and it's already relatively late, she wasn't really hopeful but it was worth a try.
The wind rustles around the two of them as they turn the corner to Samuel. Penelope takes a nervous breath which Matt notices because he starts to talk to her, sounding almost reassuring.
"I'm confident he's here. He always is?" he scoffs, trying to seem confident but she could tell he's unsure too. His ring-adorned hand knocks on the wooden door.
But when there's no response after the second time, his face drops a little.
Penelope almost has to smile at the way his confident expression drops when things don't go according to his plan. Matt freezes for a moment before turning back to the waiting girl behind him.
His expression changes again as he sees the concerned brunette with the kitten in her hand.
"He's probably asleep" he speaks while rubbing his neck with his hand, his brows slightly furrowed.
"Probably" she quietly agrees, nodding her head as her hair flows softly in the wind.
"There has to be another person we can go to, right?" the man looks around as if it might help, it is pitch black here because they went down the path to get to Samuel.
Penelope just quietly shakes her head at his question which he just barely catches. A loud, almost annoyed sigh escapes him.
Of course not at her.
The girl just walks past him and slides down the housewall, keeping the cat safe in her arms. Of course she sits down on the wooden floor, on Samuel's little terrace. She would have physically refused to sit on the grass, especially in the dark where she can't see what's there. No matter how much Penelope loves animals, that's where it ends.
The brunette boy stands in front of her, his hands in his pockets as he looks at her somewhat surprised. "What are you doing?" he speaks carefully as he tilts his head at her.
Nelly shrugs, not knowing how to answer his question because she doesn't know herself.
He sighs, and looks around as if considering his options. Before he takes his hands out of his pockets with a defeated sigh and walks over to the seated girl. The next second he sits down next to her with a small thud.
Her confused face scanning him is answer enough for him as he stretches out and gets comfortable. He stretches one leg out while bending the other and resting his elbow on it. This makes his keys that he has hanging on his pants rustle a little, filling the silence.
Matt nods his head at her. "What?"
But the silent way shes looking at him is enough to answer his question. "You didn't expect me to leave you alone here, did you?" he raises his eyebrows at her, holding in a scoff.
"Well, I found the cat, you don't need to" she speaks quietly, her voice filling the a little awkward silence between them.
"Maybe" Matt shrugs, his hands placed into his jacket pockets, that moves with him after he shrugged.
"But I ain't leaving you here" she almost sighs, a large space between the two. However, Nelly feels the warmth radiating from him, because he is most likely the warmest thing around here. And the girl is still sitting in her sweater.
"If something happens to you, it's my fault. And i really don't want to take that responsibility. So you're gonna have to life with it."
"It's a privat terrain, nothing will happen," she speaks unimpressed, raising her brows at his almost dumb answer, a tone in her voice which all most makes it seem like she's making fun of him, which she was.
"Uh" he goes quiet, trying to find something to answer, knowing she got him.
"Well i'm staying, so" he unbothered shrugs and leans more against the wall. A silent sigh escapes her which apparently catches his ears because a low chuckle escapes him.
Matt actually promised himself he would stay awake to watch, but his soft snores were the first to be heard. His soft breaths filled the quiet air that was filled with the faint wind or crackling further away.
He was dead asleep.
Penelope is still sitting in the same spot, while Matt's face is turned more towards her. Her legs are pressed to her chest as she holds the kitten, who is also asleep softly.
The September air has become colder with time, and her teeth are chattering quietly.
No matter how many times her eyes close before she opens them again, she forces herself to stay awake. Not wanting to fall asleep here.
She didn't wipe her Make-up off or did her Skincare, so she would definitely break out again.
And that's exactly what she wanted to avoid after the whole afford she puts into her skin.
But at the same time sleeping sounded so welcoming, even tho the hard wooden floor made it a little unattractive again.
The girls been trying to get comfortable since they sit down, she doesn't know how Matt could just fall asleep like that.
Another thing that's on her mind is that she doesn't even want to imagine what it would be like if she were alone, even though her company wasn't the best either.
Matt slightly stirring brings her back and she tilts her head towards the boy who suddenly feels like he is sitting closer. His head is next to her shoulder and she furrows her eyebrows a little.
Raising one arm, she places her hand lightly on the side of his face and gently pushes him away again.
Careful not to wake him, she freezes a little as he stirs a little. Her breath almost stops and she pauses for a minute before she is sure he is asleep.
She pushes Matt's head away so that he gently lolls on the other side.
Quietly scanning him for a minute before a quiet shudder leaves her and her hand returns to the cat in her lap. With each passing minute, the brunette's eyes grow heavier.
And it's getting harder and harder to fight the tiredness that's slowly enveloping her. Her arms tighten their grip on the cat as her back slides a little further down the wall, and her soft breathing fills the air.
Her eyes slowly close, no matter how hard she fights it, and how long she's held out, it's almost 4am by now and her body's giving up.
What's unfortunate is that tomorrow is that party that her friends want to drag her to, and the fact that she barely got any sleep isn't going to improve her mood or enthusiasm either.
Maybe she can use that as an excuse, "I saved a kitten and got no sleep, i can't go."
But Nelly knows better than to be that delusional and talk herself into it, getting hopes for them to end up not being true and her getting dragged to that party.
There is no way out for tomorrow.
