"okay, so to say in the kindest way possible, yours is awful."
tae said, pointing to chris's sand castle. he scoffed in return moving away from her, "my sand castle? we both made it,"

el rolled her eyes as matt rested his head on her shoulder. next to her reed and briar looked at them, clearly used to it.

the whole group including mads, oakley, lili and iris all sat on the beach, in the middle of a competition of building sand castles. which currently didn't seem like there would be a winner, since tae and chris were once again fighting.

since the last time they came to the small beach town, they had gone out a few times. including chris feeding into her interests, even if that meant carrying her shopping bags.

next to them, awkwardly watching the two talk, was mads and oakley. mads laughed quietly, as she wrapped an arm around oakley's. after the trip, el reached out to oakley, helping him finally talk to mads.

as everyone expected, theo and saorise were together as well. during the party they had gotten more close, and as of now they typically hung out by saorise would paint, while theo watched, admiring while he drew.

lastly, lili and iris hadn't gotten together yet. but as they talked, the rest of the group would give them knowing looks. as of now, they were standing by the ocean, throwing rocks, the sun reflecting onto the water.

"alright i quit," chris responded, throwing his hands in the air.

"finally, can we go home?" el quickly questioned, starting to dust off her clothes of sand.

"yeah one second," theo agreed, standing up, going over to the sand castle before kicking it.

"hello? we worked hard on that."

el sat out in the backyard of her house, flipping through pages of her book. she continued to read as her corded headphones played the lover album through her ears. next to her, a fire was going in the fire pit, the flames shining on the paper in the book.

"hi," a voice said, sitting down next to her.

she pulled one of the air buds out of her ear, "hi,"

matt played with rings on his hands, one made of paper catching el's attention the most. a smile grew on her face as she handed the other to him, and looked down at her own ring.

even though their relationship wasn't perfect, el didn't mind. she closed her eyes as she rested her head on his shoulder. the sun began to set, the sky turning a light pink and other colors. next to her, matt kissed her forehead while el thought to herself. knowing that he felt the same. that she was happy, even if just for now.
