BACKSTORY:

(t/w: canon-typical violence, parental death, murder, suicide attempts)

Ilya was born on April 7, 2003, to Aleksander and Ana. Their surnames are unknown. He was the couple's only child.

From the second he could walk, a gun was thrust into Ilya's hands. He was told to learn how to protect his family from the evil aliens that would inevitably try to invade. So Ilya learned how to shoot to kill.

His parents were alien conspiracy theorists. They were paranoid that aliens would invade and kill or enslave humanity. So they had their toddler son learn how to shoot them down. Makes perfect sense.

When Ilya was six, his parents found out about Skrulls. Not only that, but they found out there was a family of Skrulls living nearby. They made plans to expose the aliens to the world.

Well, the Skrull family caught wind of this. They, and their child, Se'leen, went to Ilya's home to reason with his parents. That didn't work. Things got heated and Ana reached for a gun. Se'leen's mother grabbed it before Ana could and shot the woman. Aleksander reached for his gun but the male Skrull beat him to it. Soon, both the humans lie dead in the floor.

Ilya watched the whole thing happen. He sneaked to the pantry, where another gun was hidden. He shot both the adult Skrulls point-blank. He then dragged his dead parents out to the woods and buried them. For the next week, he sat by their shallow graves with a loaded pistol. He'd used two rounds on the Skrulls. He had eight left.

The first human he shot was the butcher his parents went to every week. He'd noticed that Aleksander and Ana hadn't come to get any meat, so he went to check on them. The house was empty, so he checked the woods. He was met with Ilya, who didn't know if the man was a Skrull or not. So, Ilya shot the man.

Next was a woman who Ana shared tea with. When no one answered the phone at Ana house, she went to investigate. She followed the butcher's footsteps and ended up with a bullet in her head.

This would happen six more times. Finally, Ilya ran out of bullets. That's when he was found by a red haired S.H.I.E.LD. agent.

He tried to shoot her, but he was out of bullets. She took him back to HQ for questioning.

Well, it turned out he was just a paranoid kid who'd watched his parents get murdered. Poor thing didn't even know his own last name. So, Natasha took him in.

For the next few years, Ilya lived with Natasha when she wasn't on missions. When she was away, he stayed with Clint and his family. Except once, when he stayed with Mandy Quill and almost got murdered by her kid, Selene.

When Ilya was twelve, the Ultron debacle happened. He'd been staying with the Bartons when the Avengers crashed in and said there was a killer AI after humanity. Ilya didn't care much about that. He cared more about Clint's daughter, Maria, whom Clint had brought in from NYC. Ilya tried to get close to her, but she was very mean to him and the brunette girl Steve had brought along. However, this only fueled Ilya's infatuation.

The next year, Natasha enrolled Ilya in school. It was a boarding school for grades 6 through 12. Coincidentally, it was the same school Beth Banner and Freya Thordottir were attending.

Two years later, Thanos finished his quest to find the Infinity Stones. Ilya, who was at school at the time, was doing homework with Freya when the Snap happened. Ilya was turned to dust in front of Freya's eyes.

Five years after that, Bruce brought everyone back. After Tony snapped, Ilya went to find Clint and asked him where Natasha was. That was when Clint told Ilya what had happened to her. Ilya didn't scream. He didn't cry. He didn't blame Clint for what happened. Instead, he went back to one of the safehouses he and Natasha had stayed in and slit his wrists. He survived the attempt on his life and the next morning, Clint found him and took him home.

A few months later, Ilya ran away. He went to another safehouse and hung a noose. Before he could hang himself, however, a bounty hunter burst in and tried to kill Ilya himself. While the boy had been planning to kill himself only moments before, in that moment, he wanted nothing more than to live. So he fought back. Eventually, he wrestled the bounty hunter's gun out of his hands and shot him five times in the head.

Shortly after that incident, Rachel Stark and Beth Banner had an idea to create a superhero group called the Young Avengers. It would consist of the kids of the original nine Avengers. Ilya joined and took the name Brown Recluse.

Three seasons of badass fighting happened, the team got closer, Ilya got to spend more time with Pretty Maria, things were pretty good.

Then, another bounty hunter was sent after Brown Recluse. That's what happens when you're Natasha Romanoff's kid. Ilya barely escaped with his life and went to Georgie, the resident nurse. She patched him up and told him to be careful.

That night, Catty told him he had to get lost. She didn't want a bounty hunter coming to her house! What if Hambo (yes, the sock monkey) got hurt? So Catty called Beth, who picked up the teens in her truck and drove them to a safehouse.

However, they wouldn't make it to their destination.

Beth's tires got shot out. The trio ran into the woods. The bounty hunter caught up and tried to stab Ilya. Catty pushed him out of the way and got a knife through the stomach. Beth Hulked out and killed the bounty hunter while Catty died in Ilya's arms.

Ilya went back with Beth. She let him stay in her apartment for a little bit until he was slightly less traumatized. That was when Ilya tried yet again to kill himself. It was his fault Catty died. He was the one who went to her house in the first place. Who got her involved in this mess. If it wasn't for him, she'd be alive.

He tried to take a whole bottle of pills, but Beth caught him and stopped him. She reminded him of all that he had to live for, all that he still could do. If he killed himself, he'd never grow old or get married or anything.

So, Ilya lived on.

He was recruited by Nick Fury to help take down Gravik during the Secret Invasion arc. This was when he would actually get on somewhat decent terms with Selene Mac-Quill.

A few months later, Catty was brought back to life, without her memories of her past life. Ilya and Rachel came up with several plans (that failed) to bring her memories back. Nothing worked but at least Ilya didn't feel as guilty for getting her killed.

Catty eventually got her memories back and the Young Avengers were complete again. On the first mission after Feral Heart rejoined the group, Eagle Oakley (Maria) was injured. Ilya carried her out of harm's way and basically simped over her. That was when Maria realized that holy shit, she had feelings for Ilya Romanoff. The two started dating and became the only straight couple ever.
