Whispers wake me up. Weird. Usually I'm the first one awake. I do it to make sure I have time to shower. I know, I know, not all boys are the same, but I'd rather not take any chances you know?
" Slow down Alby. I can't understand anything you're saying, and to be honest, you kinda seem insane right now. "
A grunt. Probably Alby's. He's nice, but i think in the whole 8 weeks i've been here, he's said exactly 4 words to me.
" Something's up with the new greenie, man. I'm telling you, I tried talking to him, but he just started speaking nonsense. Sounded like he was having a stroke. "
" Has anybody else tried talking to him? "
" Yeah, I had Newt try, and then Jeff. No difference. "
" What about Valentina? "
" You think it's a good idea to let a random guy near her? He's a total stranger. "
" He's not a stranger, he's one of us. And if we don't have each other, we have nothing. Just ask her, alright? "
" I'll get Newt to do it. They work together. Maybe he'll know how to convince her, cause I sure as hell don't know how. She is one complicated gal. "
I waited for a few minutes, but nothing else followed. Great. Not that I wasn't going to introduce myself anyways, but getting forced to, because being a girl might break the ice is just a whole other kind of low.
Sighing, I got ready. As much as I could anyways, on a farm. But, if I can pride myself on anything, it's my clothes. I have no idea if they have a fashionista wherever our supplies come from, but my clothes are not too shabby. Of course, it be great if I wasn't stuck in a giant maze with 50 boys, but hey, at least my clothes are cute.
Priorities.
Today, baggy sweatpants with a tight tube top, with my favorite green jacket. It's what I wore when I came up in the box, and it's worn, but it brings me a weird sense of comfort, like voodoo magic or something.
Quickly, I head out the door. Fresh air. And manure. I check my apple tree. No blossoms or anything yet, but at least it has some leaves.
I pass the kitchens, and spot Frypan. As much as I complain about boys, nobody could ever make me hate this sweet one.
" Hey! Tina! C'me here. Try this. " He hands me a plate, with an egg on it cooked in a way where it's all folded, with peppers and other vegetables inside. I sniff it, as if that's gonna tell me if Fry poisoned it.
" It's called..Um..Oh! Omelet, I think. Found it in an old recipe book. Try it. " As eager as he is to have me try it, I decline.
"Another time man. I've got stuff to do. " In reality, I have a pretty easy morning in front of me. But I hate, hate, hate eggs. Great time to be a picky eater, especially to dislike the main source of food that's available to us. No one knows because if there's anything I hate more than eggs, it's being a burden. Most of the time, I give it to the pigs. Or Zart.
Not much of a difference.
Kidding, kidding. Zart's chill. One of the few friends I have here.
" VALENTINA "
What the hell. Yes, go ahead idiot, scream my name at 7 in the morning for the whole Glade to hear.
Turning around, I see a tall, brown eyed boy. Nick. My first friend, but that probably goes for everyone in the glade. He's a good leader, and strong. He's brave too, but I'm going to bet that if I don't kill him now, his curiosity will.
"Valentina, I need you to pick the tomatoes, then the cucumbers. The potatoes need more fertilizer and also- "
Cutting him off, I cross my arms " What ever happened to ' Hi, How are you, You look great today Valentina?' "
Raising an eyebrow, he crossed his arms too, mimicking me; " Hi, How are you, You look great today "
" As opposed to everyday," I say, feigning surprise " Wow Nick, you really know how to make a girl feel bad "
Surprise, guilt and worry flood the brunette's eyes. " No! I mean-Yes! I mean- You look good everyday, Tina. "
Chuckling, I shake my head. " Calm down, I was just messing with you. I'll do the tasks you want. For the bonfire tonight right? Fry planning a feast? "
Nodding, Nick continued on the things I had to do. I wasn't the keeper of the Track-Hoes, but I was way more reliable than Zart. Usually, I did the organizing, and he was the face of the operation.
After waving goodbye, I move to the gardens. The smell of fruits and flowers cleanse my nostrils. I'm usually the first one here, but in the corn field, I see two blonde heads. If I'm guessing, it's probably Henry and Calvin. They're super close, and they look identical. If we still had our memories intact, I'd be willing to bet they're related somehow. I get to work.
In the gardens, it takes me out of this abomination of a prison. I feel like I'm a million miles away, in my own garden. There's a cottage behind me, and on the horizon there's endless water. My thoughts feel like they can sail the ocean, and my mind can play in the sand. It's endless peacefulness. The only thing I can hear is the sounds of nature, crickets and frogs chirping together, a wonderful symphony. All I hear is the waves crashing against the beach. This is what I imagine the world to look like. This is what I hope the world looks like.
Shaking my head, I continue with my tasks. Altough it's nice to dream, dreamers never get anywhere. They need to wake up or they'll end up sleeping forever.
I've already gotten the tomatoes, and Henry seems like he's collected plenty of corn. Zart's god knows where and-
" Hey. "
I jump at the voice, then without thinking throw a punch somewhere in that direction.
" Watch it! I've only got one good leg! "
I relax my shoulders hearing the British accent. Newt's super sweet, and caring, although he gets kinda scary when he's mad. I start picking up the tomatoes that spilt from my basket as Newton keeps grumbling about how I have to be more bloody careful, and some other British things probably, like "get me more tea!"or something.
" Valentina? Hello? I sorta need to have a chat with you. "
I hum in response. I don't understand what could be so important that he can't just say it now unless- oh. It's about what Alby wants. Oh. No.
I get up, unfazed. I wasn't gonna let Newt know I eavesdropped on a conversation that probably was not meant for me.
" So- uh, how's your day- I mean morning going?" He said, awkwardly.
I blinked, slowly. This whole situation is wacko. " Good, I guess. You? "
" Good, good. I'm uh- good. " He said, scratching the back of his neck. " Look, I was uh, I was wondering If you could uh- maybe introduce yourself to the Greenie? "
" Yes. For sure, one hundred percent. " I needed to agree as fast as possible. He was getting redder than the tomatoes in my basket, and the urge to get out of this conversation overcame common sense. " Goodbye. " I quickly left, stopping by the kitchen to drop off the fruits. I had a new task now.
I needed to go Greenie Hunting.
