HE'S YOUR WHAT?

DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT?

A single decision may lead to multiple paths as these routes could define a person's future for the better or for the worst. Oikawa Tooru would've passed by the convenience store and dragged his little nephew's body straight home. However, his choice of getting ice cream with Takeru instead of watching Volleyball matches in his bedroom brought him to another route of endless possibilities.

After seeing your mother walked inside the convenience store, Oikawa swiftly shoved his phone in his pocket and tried to hide in plain sight at one of the store's aisles. Takeru watched the scene unfold in front of him with puzzlement written on his miniature face. They didn't really play hide and seek out in the open like that.

Sadly, Oikawa's camouflage among the stacks of assorted Lays Chips got revealed when Y/N's mother passed by and caught a fluff of brown curls on the corner of her eye.

"I don't want to be an inconvenience, ma'am." The setter timidly chuckled as he rubbed the back of his neck. His left hand was occupied with a paper bag full of chips and drinks while his right securely held his nephew's. Maybe he should apologize to the kid later for his slightly sweaty palm.

The gleaming sun's yellow pigments had gradually transitioned into red-orange gradients of rays as the blue shades of the sky were washed down with purple hues and cotton candy clouds. On the streets of the peaceful community, a middle-aged lady, who had features similar to the young taekwondo athlete, was walking beside the two. She shook her head, "Don't think such thoughts, Oikawa-san! Our family will be glad to accommodate you and this cutie pie," the adult out of the three cooed out.

"Is he a cousin of yours, by the way?"

"No, ma'am. He's my nephew."

"Well, you do look alike," her eyes shifted between the little one and the charming fellow, "It's a reunion of my family's side. Don't worry. We don't bite. I just thought it would be nice for the gang to meet my daughter's 'friend' after all! And please call me, Mrs. L/N. Calling me 'ma'am' is too formal!" The lady reassured the male with a wave of her hand as she noticed his rather tense form.

Her attention then drifted over to the familiar structure of her home. The expression on her face sculpted into excitement as she gestured her head over to the gate of her household, "No need to be shy now! Feel at home, kids." She hummed.

Takeru felt Oikawa's grip tightened around his hand. It made the child's concerns grow for his uncle as it wasn't a common scenario for the brunette to have his sweat glands act up or have him in this nervous mess. "It's a family reunion, Uncle Tooru. Besides, you're only going to introduce yourself as Auntie Y/N's friend," Takeru whispered as the volume of his voice was enough for the taller male to hear.

It wasn't a no-brainer to find out that his uncle was interested in the kind lady's daughter. After all, the boy had a front-row seat watching the high schooler act like one of his fangirls over the female athlete.

Oikawa lowered his chin to look at his nephew beside him. The way the little squirt comforted him made the setter's lips turn up into a small smile. "Yeah. It's a simple family cook-out," he said; though, it seemed like the reply was mainly directed for himself.

As soon as he walked into the backyard, a sudden rush of wind passed through the male as someone draped their arm over his shoulder, pulling him over to their spot with Takeru still in his hold. "Hey, guys! Meet Tooru and his nephew, Takeru." Y/N's mother grinned widely and presented the male before the many family members.

"This charming fellow is Y/N's... companion," she introduced in a sing-song manner— the tone of her voice sounding as if her words have a deeper meaning to it. Heedless, Oikawa didn't react to her statement. Y/N's relatives, however, got the hint from the bright adult as their response to the proclamation was mixed with glee, shock, and agony.

Well, only two persons reacted like the last one.

"WHAT?! HIM?! NO WAY!"

The light sounds of Bermuda grass getting trampled on resounded while the shuffling of footsteps got louder. Two figures rushed over to the center of the garden, facing the host of the cook-out. Their eyes filled with utter shock as they both looked at the tensed-looking male in disbelief. The first to speak out their opinion about this matter was no other than the man who kicked the poor guy after a specific banana peel incident.

"Why did you bring this guy," Y/N's father pointed at Oikawa with his index finger, "Over to our home?! We're here to host a family reunion. Not an engagement party!"

"Yeah! I'm arresting that Bozzo for stealing my dear cousin," the other person, who was opposed to the setter, agreed with his old uncle. His face had features that identified him as Y/N's relative. It didn't seem like he was a student despite his fresh looks as he wore an official uniform and a police cap.

He tried to intimidate the Johsai captain, but Oikawa only stared at him awkwardly. The male wasn't doing it deliberately, though. He was only attempting to calm his nerves in front of his crush's relatives.

"Oh, would you two quit it!"

An old couple jumped into the scene, each taking the ear of the two protective family members. "Like what my daughter said, he's only a companion of your Y/N. So, give this guy a break." the old man scolded the man, hearing the slight whines coming out of the adult's mouth as he continued pulling his ear.

The H/C-haired man stared at his father-in-law in fear. His adam's apple bobbed up and down as he gulped before looking away, "Yes, sir," he mumbled, letting himself get dragged over to one of the tables by the senior citizen.

Oikawa didn't know what to do. Maybe it was because of how the events escalated so quickly that his brain didn't have time to register what was happening.

"Please don't mind them, honey. Those two are always like that," a voice sweet as honey spoke out, breaking Oikawa's daze. The source of that velvety voice came from your grandmother, who was still pinching the ear of your cousin. "You seem like a good boy. Please take care of our Y/N, please? If you're looking for my granddaughter, she might be inside the kitchen with Shiji." The elder softly smiled up at him.

The volleyball captain nodded his head quickly and bowed at a ninety-degree angle, Takeru following his uncle's gesture of respect. "Y...Yes, ma'am! And thank you for accomodating me and my nephew. I... It was nice to meet you all!" He stammered.

The older lady laughed at Oikawa's formality. "Call me, granny, dear," she corrected the male as she ignored the pained cries of her other grandson.

Oikawa straightened his back and nodded once again, "Okay, ma- granny!" He voiced enthusiastically, scratching his scalp as his eyes flickered down to the ground. He cleared his throat, "Uh... I should check on L/N-san. Thank you, granny!" He bowed down once again and jogged over to the back door, only to stop once he realized that Takeru somehow got out of his hold.

"I'm here, Uncle Tooru!"

His chocolate-colored irises scanned throughout the tables and found Takeru waving his arms from the distance as he was with your little cousins, munching on some barbeque. With a sigh of relief, his worries washed away at the sight of his nephew playing with the other kids. Knowing that the boy was under the radar of the other adults, Oikawa set off into the kitchen to look for a certain tall maiden.

"L/N-san? Are you here?"

He looked around the place, though the interior was already familiar to him due to his last visit for one of your tutor sessions with him. The aroma of freshly baked cookies wafted in the air as it caught the setter's sense of smell. The scent appeared to have a pinch of caramel and peanuts. The delicious fragrance made his stomach growl in hunger.

"L/N-san?" Oikawa called out, dropping off the paper bag he was holding and following the whiff of cookies trailing to the kitchen area.

That was when his chocolate hues clashed with your piercing E/C eyes.

His breath hitched once his chest made contact with yours. He could feel your hot breath fanning his lips as both of your faces were inches from each other. If the climate wasn't making him heat up, the closed distance between the two of you was changing him into a steaming pot.

Oikawa widened his eyes and hurriedly took a step back— shades of red dusted the apple of his cheeks. 'We almost...' His eyes roamed down to your parted lips before they shifted back to the startled expression on your face. "Hah, I didn't see you there, L/N-san. Should've watched where I was going." The volleyball captain attempted to laugh it off as he rubbed the nape of his neck.

You cocked a brow and squinted your eyes at him, not minding what happened moments ago as the appearance of the latter was still a big mystery to you. "Oikawa-san? Why are you here?" You asked, not believing that the person she was only texting an hour ago was now in front of her.

"Well, uh, I bumped into your mom, right? Well, she invited me over to your family reunion! I tried to decline her offer! I did! But she was—"

"Y/N. I'll be bringing these cookies out now— Oh, Oikawa-san," a monotone voice uttered out while the male was having difficulty in coming up with an explanation.

Oikawa paused from talking after his ears discerned the familiar voice greeting his name from the kitchen. 'It can't be.' He thought and turned his head, seeing the all-time ace player by the doorway with a tray of cookies. He didn't seem fazed when he saw the setter, even if his get-up was a pair of mittens and a floral apron with small cute animal designs sewn on the cloth. You then followed Oikawa's gaze and glanced behind you to see your cousin holding out the cookies you baked.

"L/N-san... Can I ask something?"

"You may, Oikawa-san."

"Can you tell me what your mother's last name is? And I mean her maiden name."

"It's Ushijima."

Now, he wondered what would've happened if he'd just dragged Takeru back home instead.
