You woke up to the sound of your alarm. Not exactly your ideal way to wake up on a weekend, while being hungover but you had something to do today. In fact, that thing made all of the effort worth while.

You decided JuJu and Bryson would be fine by themselves for a bit. Besides it's not like they'll be waking up anytime soon. They were definitely down for the count since last night.

Rolling out of bed, you took care of all your basic hygiene and got dressed. It wasn't too chilly outside so you figured a simple white off the shoulder top and jeans would go just fine. You paired it with gold jewelry, which included a gold locket that you held dear to you.

I guess by now, you're probably confused on what has you up this early. And also now would probably be the best time to tell you, you're not an only child. Ta dah ! You actually have a brother, older brother by a year to be exact, but most of the time it felt the opposite. Your dad kind of "disowned" him when the incident happened, even though it really wasn't his fault. Which is why, you were now on your way to the jail he got transferred to from juvenile a few months ago. It was tough watching him spend his birthday behind a glass shield, knowing he was going to the worse place a few hours from then. But you didn't cry about it. You didn't want to upset him anymore than he probably already was.

Truth be told he was a good kid. Nicholas Smith. And you're convinced he still is. It didn't happen as much since school was out for the summer but every weekend during the school year, you would make the hour long drive and spend a few minutes teaching him whatever you learned in each class that week. His attention never strayed. You even got him a notebook so that he could take notes. Lord Knows what he would use them for but he told you he would go back and teach the other guys what he learned.

See ? Typical good kid stuff. Only thing is that he made a few bad decisions. As does everyone. But only his ended him up in a place like that.

You checked how you looked one more time in your rear view mirror before locking the doors to your car and heading inside the building. As usual your bag was checked and you were escorted to the cold, blue lit room where visitors didn't have to talk behind the dreaded scratched up glass. You twiddled with your fingers until you felt your phone vibrate with a message. Pulling it out, you see that the person who texted you was none other than C, apologizing if he was "acting weird" the night before. You started to text him back but left it alone when you felt a presence sit in front of you.

There he was. Your almost 6'2 brother. His 4b curly hair was braided into individuals and his in growing mustache was neatly groomed. On his face, rested his infamous pair of black glasses with tape in the middle, since he was pretty clumsy. The same dork you remembered him to be. "Hiya, sis."

"Hi," you smile, reaching across the table to give him a hug. "How's your week been ?"

"It's okay. I don't even notice the days go by anymore," he answered, which saddened you a bit.

"Yeah.."

"So ! Debate team. I'm assuming your doing it again ?"

"Yeah ! Since I'm coming back to Paradis I figured I should pick up something," you reply. "If not then I'd go half crazy in that house."

"Dad's still trippin ?" he laughs. "How is he ? Does he ever talk about me ?"

Your smile faded slowly. "Well dad hasn't been tripping' as much. And I don't really hear him talk about you but it's okay- oh ! Mom told me to give you this." You reached into your purse to bring out a small rectangular box. "Don't worry they checked it before I came in."

Nicholas snickered as he took the box from you and opened it, revealing a pack of mechanical pencils, a note pad, a rosary and a note. "I'll read this when I get back to my bunk.. How is she ?"

"She's good. Been spending long nights at the hospital again."

"Guess all y'all tryna keep from going insane, huh ?" he paused. "How's Porky ?"

"Porco."

"Whatever. How is he ?"

"Couldn't tell you. We broke up."

"Finally ! I mean. I'm so sorry to hear." You sucked your teeth. "Wait so who had you smiling at your phone when I walked in ?"

Damn. Was I really smiling ? you thought to yourself. "No one just this guy. And we're friends."

"Friends ? Like JuJu and Bryson kinda friends ?"

You roll your eyes. "No he's straight."

"Oh. What's his name ?"

"Nunya."

"(y/n) Rosalin-"

"Okay ! He goes by C."

"C ? The fuck is that alphabet ass name ?!"

You gasp trying to hold back a laugh. "Nicky stop." That only made the two of you laugh harder. And for a moment, it didn't feel like the two of you were in a visitation room. But you were. So. Yeah. "Enough about me. What's new with you ? Been working out I see," you laugh reaching over the table to point at his arm.

"Man just a little. But guess what I learned ?"

"What ?"

"The guys taught me how to flirt better."

"..How the hell.."

"Okay wait before you jump to conclusions. It's this thing they set up where we can get pen pals on the computer. Kinda like a FaceTime-Bottom line they taught me how to talk to girls."

"I swear to God Nicky, if you end up on my for you page because some thirsty girl falls you-"

"Shut up !"

You laugh once more. "No but that's great ! Lord knows you needed it," you teased.

"You're lucky I can't give you a nougie in here," he said holding up his hands that were kept in cuffs.

"Well you have another trial coming up ! So who knows ? Maybe you'll be giving me nougies again in no time."

He sighed at your naive optimism. "Be honest (y/n). Do you think I have a chance ?"

You pause at his question. You didn't know if he actually wanted you to be honest or if he wanted to tell him the answer he wanted. Like I said earlier, you knew Nicholas was a good kid. Your family (minus your father) and everyone else who's ever met him knows it. But think about it. In a room full of predominantly white faces, who couldn't care about his fate would say different. He's a criminal not an athlete. A felon not a great big brother. A statistic and not someone who will be freed anytime soon.

You give him a half smile though your silence gave him an answer. "You'll be okay, Nicky. I know it."

He smiles, putting his hands up on the table for you to hold. So, you did exactly that. "Thanks (y/n)."

"All inmates must return back to their cells," the room's guard called. Soon after, another guard came to get Nicholas from his seat.

"This is my cue. Love you sis."

"See you next week okay ? Love you too Nicky."

He gave you a weak smile before walking back. You couldn't stand to sit there any longer so you went back to your car. Every visit was harder than the last. You began driving and soon enough, you got to your house. Creeping your way into the house, you slipped through the front door while being careful to shut it quietly behind you.

"Where were you ?"

Your heart stopped when you heard your dad's voice. "Morning drive," you respond.

"You were out driving for two hours ?"

"Yup."

He nodded. "Okay. JuJu and Bryson are still upstairs."

"Okay."

The walk back to Nicholas's cell was a hard one. He watched his feet drag along the barely cleaned floor all the way back to his cell, where his roommate was waiting. His roommate was so fond of hearing about how his visits went with you, as Nicholas likes hearing about the rare visits his roommate got from his kids.

Nicholas plopped himself onto the bottom bunk. "How was it kid ?" the gruff man asked.

"It was okay. Mom bought me something," he responded tossing the box across the cell to his friend.

He peaked into the box, seeing the gifts and note. "Did ya' read the note yet ?"

"Nope. Too scared."

"Want me to-"

"You already know I do."

The man laughed as he unfolded the note.
"Mi querido hijo (my dear son). Not a day goes by where I don't miss you here with me. I miss your pretty eyes I gifted you. I miss you buggin me about what I was gonna make for breakfast that day. I hope you're taking good care of yourself in there. Saluda a tu amigo por mรญ. (Say hi to your friend for me) Actually he might be reading this. Hola Jonathan ! Anyways, make sure you two watch out for each other in there. I want my baby in one piece when you come home. Because you WILL come home. Love you. Keep your head up baby. Love, mom," your friend read aloud. Nicholas let out another deep sigh. "You gotta write her back. She never stopped reaching out. You don't know how lucky you are."

Nicholas stayed quiet and kept up with staring at the bottom of the top bunk. All his bunkie did was sigh and fold the note back up, placing it on the small desk on his side of the room. "Just think about it kid."

You, JuJu, and Bryson decided to make plans for the night to go to the Juke. They wanted you to get out of the house, especially after today. Right now, the three of you were getting ready and already you started to feel better.

"(y/n). Your phone !" JuJu called, tossing your phone onto your bed.

You picked it up and looked at the incoming notifications. From who ? Take a wild guess.
