9.1 Croaton

Me and Dean walked through the motel door, I shut it behind me as Dean and I turned to see Sam sit up, on the floor. "Sam?" We both asked noticing he was breathing heavily.

💽

"Continue on OR-224 west."

"There are only two towns in the U.S. names Rivergrove." Sam informed.

"How come you're so sure it's the one in Oregon?" Dean asked as I just leant forward listening staring at the road. "There was a picture."

"Okay, what else?"

"I saw a dark room, some people, and a guy tied to a chair."

"And I ventilated him?" Dean blarted out. "Yeah. You thought there was something inside him." Sam explained. "A demon? Was he possessed?" I asked not moving. "All your weirdo visions are tied to stupid yellow-eyes." I said in a huff throwing myself against the back seat.

"Was there any black smoke? Did we try to exorcise him?" Dean asked after they both glanced at me.

"No. Nothing. You just plugged him. That's it." Sam said towards him.

"Well, I'm sure I had a good reason."

"I sure hope so."

"What does that mean?" He asked in a confused and almost defensive tone. "I'm not gonna waste an innocent man…I wouldn't."

"I never said you would."

"Fine."

"Fine."

"Guys," I warned leaning forward. "We don't know what it is. Which means you two can't already be at each other's throats. Look, whatever it is, that guy in said chair is part of it. So, let's find him and grill is ass."

"Language," They both warned I rolled my eyes and leaned back, "Fine." I muttered.

💽

Once we reached the town it was already day, Dean found a spot and pulled over turning the Impala off. Sam started looking around, "He was there," he said pointing towards a man sitting on a porch messing with a fishing pole.

We got out and walked up to him. "Morning." Dean said getting his attention. "Morning. Can I help you?" He asked glancing up.

"Yeah. Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard. U.S. Marshals." He said as they both held out their fake badges.

"What's this about?"

"We're looking for someone." He said putting his badge away. "A young man, early twenties He'd have a thin scar right below his hairline." Sam explained pointing to wear the scar was.

"What did he do?"

"We're actually looking for someone else," I piped up.

"He's not in any kind of trouble or anything. Not yet." Dean added glancing at his arm. "I think maybe you know who he is, Master Sergeant. My dad was in the corps. He was a corporal."

"What company?" He asked.

"ECHO-2-1."

"So, can you help us?" Sam asked. The man hesitated, "Duane Tanner's got a scar like that, but I know him. Good kid. Keeps his nose clean."

"Oh, I'm sure he does. Do you know where he lives?"

"With his family, up Aspen Way." He informed pointing down the road.

"Thank you."

"Thanks."

We walked over to the other side of the road and passed a telephone pole with something craved. "Hey." I said getting my brothers attention. They both turned and I pointed to the word "Croatoan"?" Dean asked. "Yeah." Sam said. They both stared at me, "Roanoke. Lost colony. Ring a bell?" Dean still didn't get it.

"Dean, did you pay attention to history class?" Sam asked.

"No because the only books he can read are picture books." I remarked. "Shut up. I know things, the shot heard around the world. How bills become laws."

I scoffed, "That's not school. That's 'Schoolhouse Rock'."I corrected.

"Whatever."

"Whatever? Whatever? Dean, Roanoke was one of the first english colonies in America ─ late 1500s." I explained. "Oh, yeah, yeah, I do remember that. The only thing they left behind was a single word carved in a tree..'CROATOAN'."

"Yeah, and there were theories, indian raid, disease, but nobody knows what really happened. They were all just gone wiped out overnight." Sam explained.

"You don't think that's what's going on here."

"Whatever I saw in my head, it sure wasn't good. But what do you think could do that?" Sam explained.

I sighed and looked around, "Well, I mean, like I said, all your weirdo visions are always tied to the yellow-eyed demon somehow, so...we might wanna get help." I said.

"Bobby. Ellen, maybe." Sam suggested.

"Yeah, That's a good idea." I muttered pulling my phone out and started slowly walking towards the Impala, but stopped. "I don't have a signal."

Sam and Dean went into their pockets and checked their phones. "I don't either,"

"Me neither,"

I glanced and saw a payphone and started walking quickly towards it. The pulsating tone started as I started clicking the tab and nothing. "The lines dead." I said putting the phone back.

"I'll tell you one thing if I was gonna massacre a town, that'd be my first step."

💽

We decided to go to Duane Tanner's house. I watched from the car as Dean and Sam went up to talk to him. I stayed with Salem so we could figure something out. "They’re coming back,” I turned to see my brothers walking towards me. “That was kind of creepy, right? A little too stepford?” Dean asked Sam.

“Big Time” He replied as the two turned to go to the side of the house. I huffed before running after them.

We crouched down and peard into a window seeing the mom tied up and the dad handing the son a knife and he sliced his arm. Sqam slightly pushed me behind him as Dean pulled his gun out and cocked it. He swiftly kicked the door in as he and Sam rusheed in as I stood in the doorway.. “Put it down!” The dad started running towards them with a knife so Dean shot him twice. The son stared at me before running out of the window. Sam andDean ran to the broken window only do turn back to me.

“What the hell is going on?”

💽

The Impala sharply turned the corner pulling up to the doctors office.Sam helped the woman out and inside as Dean and I went to the trunk. I glanced around as he unlocked it, “You’re good,” I whispered. We, by that I mean Dean, quickly rushed inside with the dad around his shoulders.

“Hey.” I said getting the doctors attention.

“Is that….Mr. Tanner?” She asked pointing as Mr. Tanners bloody hand fell down. “Was he attacked, too?”

“Uh, no, actually, he did the attacking,” Dean corrected. “Shot?” She asked I shocked my head, “Yeah” I replied softly noticing her expression.

“And who are you two?”

“U.S. Marshal. My kid sister, I’d show you my badge, but…” Dean lied referring to the body on his back.

“Oh, sorry. Bring him back here.” She said as we followed her.

The doctor was pachting Mrs. Tanner up as we stood back out of the way. “Wait, you said Jake helped him? Your son Jake?” She asked as she slowly nodded, “They beat me.Tied me up.”

“I don’t believe it.”

"Pam.” The doctor warned her nuser. “Beverly, do you have any idea why they would act this way? Any history of chemical dependency?”

“No, of course not. I don’t know why. One minute, they were my husband and my son, and the next, they had the devil in them.” Mrs. Tanner said as Dean turned us, “We’ve got to talk.”

We walked into the small waiting area, “Those guys were whacked out of their gourds.” He said.

“What do you think, mass possession?” Sam asked. “If that’s the case there gunna be more. God only knows how many.” I said. “Yeah no kindin’ it could be like a freaking shriner convention. Of course, that’s one way to wipe out a town -- you take it from the inside.

“We didn’t see any of demon smoke with Tanner or any of the other usual signs.” Sam pointed out.

“No but he did seem to really like Carmen,” Dean said looking at me.

“What does that mean? Unlike Sam I don’t have the shining, and I haven’t seen that boy a day in my life.” I said giving him a look.

He held his hands up before walking over to Sam, “Something turned him into a monster. You know, if you would have taken out the other one, there would be one less to worry about.” He said.

“I’m sorry. I hesitated. It was a kid.”

“Guys,”

“No, it was an”It.” It’s not the best time for a bleeding heart, Sam.”

“Hey,” I said getting them to stop, “You two can’t go and kill each other just yet. We have no idea what we are dealing with, and puls no way to call for help outside of this town. Now, you two man up and please calm down you two can’t already have cabin fever.” I stated looking between my older brother’s.

“How’s the patient?” Sam asked seeing the doctor walking up to us.

“Terrible. What the hell happened out there? You just killed my next-door neighbor.” She infromered. “We didn’t have a choice.” Dean said. ‘Maybe so, but we need the county sheriff.”

“The phones are down.” Sam pointed out. “I know. I tried. Tell me you’ve got a police radio.” she asked my brothers. “Yeah, we do, but it crapped out just like everything else.”

The doctor let out a sigh, “I don’t understand what is happening.” She said.

“How far is it to the next town?”

“It’s about 40 milesdown to sidewinder,”

“That’s what thirty-ish minutes with you driving?” I asked looking up at Dean. “Yeah, I’m not going to let you out of my sight. We’ll see if we can get some help, my partner will stick around and keep you guys safe.” He said as we walked towards the door.

“Safe from what?”

“We’ll get back to you on that.”

💽

After a bit of driving Dean pulled up behind a car in the middle of the road, “Stay in the car,” He said getting out. I started getting a really bad feeling. “Dean,”

“Carmen stay in the car,” He repeated raising his voice a bit. I watched as he slowly looked into the car. He bent down and picked up a bloody knife glancing at me as I shrugged.

💽

He turned down the road only to be met with two cars and five guys blocking it. He stopped and put one arm across my body not knowing what was about to happen. I tilted my head seeing the same kid that jumped out the window in front of us.

“Is that?”

“Yup.” He said as someone slammed on the roof sturdling us. “Oh, ho, ho. Hey.” Dean said to the guy that was at his window not moving his arm. “Sorry. Road;s closed.”

“Yeah, I can see that. What’s up?” He asked glancing towards the the blocktions.

“Quarantine,”

“Quarantine? What is it?” I spoke up not looking away. “Don’t know. Something going around out there.” He informed making Dean to noded, “Uh-huh. Who told you that?”

“County sheriff,”

“Is he here?” I asked slowly reaching for my necklace feeling even more unconformable. “No. he called.” He replied looking down at my chest, “Say, why don’t you two get out of the car, and we’ll talk a little?”

Well, you are a handsome devil but I don’t swing that way, sorry.” Dean replied with a fake smiled keeping arm across me. “I’d sure appreciate it if you got out of the car,” the guy repeated still having his fake smile.

“Yeah, I bet you would.” Dean muttered as the guy grabbed his arm harshly as his smile dropped.”I want the necklace,” He growled.

“Well in that case,” He said starting to backing up, pushing his arm against me pushing me back. As the guy hanged onto Dean’s open window, “Stop!”

Once they guys blocking the road saw what Dean was doing started shooting at us. Dean somehow pushed me down to the floorboard, and snapped the car around getting the guy off the car. And he quickly drove away, after a moment he glanced at me. “You can come up,”

I snapped up moving my hair out of my face and start tying it up. “He wanted your necklace,” He said, glancing over at me. “Over my dead body,”

💽

We drove a bit looking around town not seeing anyone else. “Hands where I can see them!” Someone yelled popping in front of the Impala. “Son of a-” Dean started as we both turned seeing the guy from Sam’s vision pointing a gun at us. “Get out of the car!”

We both held out hands up, “Out of the car!” He repeated, “Crap.” We both muttered.

“All right. Easy there, big guy.” He started as we both got out and Dean had to pull his gun out. “Put it down!”

“Lower it now! Are either of  you one of them?!”

“No,are you?!”

“No!”

“You could be lying!”

“So could you!”

I rolled my eyes before putting my fingers to my lips and whistled, and got both their attention. “Now, we could do this all day. All right? Just take it easy before y'all kill each other.” I said keeping my hands up looking between the two.

His expression softened before he slowly lowered his gun. “What’s going on with everybody?”

“We don’t know,” Dean replied. “My neighbor, Mr. Rogers-” He started but got cut off by Dean. “You’ve got a neighbor named Mr. Rogers?”

“Not anymore. He came at me with a hatchet I put him down. He’s not the only one. I mean, it’s happening to everyone.” He explained. “We’re heading to Doc’s place. There’s still some people left.” Dean said. “I’m getting the hell out.”

“There’s no way over it without getting shot. They got the bridge covered.” I stated.

“I don’t believe you.”

“Fine, stay here. Be my guest.” Dean said getting in and turning the Impala over. “Listen, believe us don’t believe us,” I started as Dean shut his door. “Carmen let’s go!” He called as the man slowly walked over to me, nodding that he was coming with us.

“Can I ask you something?” I said seeing him nodded, “Do you want my necklace?”

“Why would I want your necklace?” he asked confusedly. “Just curious,” I replied, getting into the back seat.

He got into the passenger seat as I slide down towards Dean side noticing they were both pointing guns at each other. “Well, this ought to be a relaxing drive.” Dean said as he pulled away. I sighed quickly leaning back wondering why I left Salem with Sam.
