Champagne Problems

•Oliver Leonard Hawthorne•

'My darling, you will never be unloved by me. You are too well tangled in my soul'

ROLE NAME
Champagne Problems

CHARACTER NAME
-Given Name-
Oliver Leonard Hawthorne

'Oliver'
Meaning - Although this name has several meanings, it's most common is 'olive tree'. Ollie does actually find this rather fitting, considering an olive branch is a symbol of peace and Oliver Hawthorne thrives off of peace and harmony. He is a soft soul, and peace, in his opinion, is always superior to conflict.

'Leonard'
Meaning - Oliver's middle name is the same as his father's, and it's meaning is 'lion hearted'. This name has always been slightly less fitting in Oliver's opinion. His father was always disappointed that his first born son was not a confident child, neither competitive in sports or social matters. No, Oliver was and always has been a more reserved, dreamy creature.

'Hawthorne'
Meaning - Ah yes, the family name, passed down through generations. This is the title Oliver is set to inherit. Lord Hawthorne. Ollie always loved and hated that title. It was a promise that one day, Oliver would rise to the occasion and become the man his parents always wanted him to be, but it was also a question. There was always that flicker of doubt in both Ollie's and his father's mind that Oliver might not be up to the task, that he'd let his great family name crumble to dust and be lost to the wind. Oh, if only his father knew the real reason why that might be the case!

NICKNAMES
'Ollie'
Origin - this is just a shortened version of his name, gifted to him by the family and friends he's closest to. Of course, he doesn't use this nickname around people who would consider it improper. He does have a slight reputation to uphold.

'Hawthy'
Origin - When Ollie was young, he couldn't quite pronounce his last name, and so he called himself 'Oliver Hawthy' and somehow the nickname stuck. It's often used by his friends when they feel like winding him up.

AGE
-Current Age-
Nineteen

-Birthday-
Oliver was born on the 2nd of March, making his star sign a Pisces.

GENDER
Cisgender Male

SEXUALITY
Homosexual
This is something that Ollie figured out when he was quite young. A brief summer romance, endless pining over men he looked up to, his complete disinterest in women in any other way apart from platonically. It all summed to a conclusion that he'd been reluctant to admit at first. The very notion was ridiculous. How could he be interested in men? That was not how he was supposed to be, he knew that even then. Eventually, though, Ollie decided that if he was going to be into men, he might as well explore his options. He's definitely not as innocent as people take him to be 😉

-Description-
Whilst some kids resemble one parent more closely then the other, Ollie is an equal blend of both. The unruly brown locks he inherited from his mother, and as a child one of his main bonding exercises with her was when she'd brush his hair. This tended to be frowned upon, but it was a tradition that Ollie was deeply attached to. There was something almost transcendent about those late summer afternoons spent in the conservatory, when everything was beautifully silent with only his mother for company. He is still fond of having his hair brushed. His eyes and facial structure, however, came from his father. Piercing blue that sometimes melts into a soft grey, and soft cheekbones to match the gentle curve of his jaw. He likes to believe that these are the only traits he shares with his father.

PERSONALITY
Oliver is a creature of words and light. He seeks solace in poetry and comfort in the beauty of the world outside his window. Whilst his parents shoved rapiers and bows into his hands, Ollie had very different things on his mind. Sure, he could brandish a sword when desired, and wasn't a bad shot when it came to archery, but he never really felt passion for them, and that was a big thing for Oliver. Passion is something he simply can't live without. It is the desires and dreams that keep his dreamy head afloat when the world is intent on dragging him down. You see, Oliver Hawthorne has a secret relief, and that relief is creation. Whether it is words flowing from the tip of his quill, or paint marking milky white paper, it is the process of creation that he truly craves. What a wonder it is, how strange and entrancing is feels to take something blank and transform it into a thing of beauty. That is something he treasures more than pretty much anything else.

Another thing to note about Oliver Hawthorne is his sweet disposition. This was always discouraged when he was young. Leonard Hawthorne, his father, was adamant on having a strong, charming man for a son, someone that he could parade around and boast about to the other Lords, and instead? Well, he got Oliver. The best way to describe Ollie's nature is this: if there was a butterfly with a broken wing, he would be the one to nurse it back to health. He loves life, and thinks that everyone should get a chance to truly live it. He is the person you go to when you need a shoulder to cry on, or require a helping hand. For a long time, he felt wrong, like he wasn't quite where he was supposed to be. Whilst some kids ran around, claiming the world and everything in it as their own, Oliver always felt separate. This was not his world to own, it was someone else's and he was only living in it. This feeling of wrongness faded as he aged, though occasionally still he gets echoes of this feeling. It is part of the reason he likes to help people. Maybe, just maybe, he can make them feel like they belong, like they're not completely alone.

Independence is a big part of Oliver's lifestyle. Despite his caring and compassionate nature, he is disturbingly stubborn when it comes to his independence. People expect him to need help because of his soft ways, but it is actually quite the opposite. He likes the feeling of doing things for himself. All his life, servants have come and go, tending to his every need, and at some point he got tired of it. He was not a pet; he was not a dog that needed feeding and petting and walking. He was a human and that meant he could do stuff for himself. He still, of course, had servants and let them do their jobs, but there were and still are certain things which are his, and his alone. One such thing is his love of experimental midnight cooking. He's not quite sure how the tradition started, but sometime in his early teens, whenever he couldn't sleep, he ended up in the kitchen. To say he was not the most skilled chef would be an understatement, but he learned. When things tasted bad, he fixed them. When he burnt things, he lowered the temperature. When even the most simple dish wouldn't go as he wished, he kept trying. He is certainly nothing if not persistent, though this determination can sometime branch into irrational stubbornness.

Perhaps one of Ollie's deepest desires is the same as many others: to be loved. Forever the dreamer, he has this insatiable need to find someone he truly loves and cares for before he has to get married. There was a phrase from a book he once read that he never quite forgot, and every night it replays itself in his head like a promise, a prayer. It goes like this: 'I will love you forever; whatever happens. Till I die and after I die, and when I find my way out of the land of the dead, I'll drift about forever, all my atoms, till I find you again.' This is the kind of love he wants. The deep and forever kind of love, the kind of love that he'll never be able to experience with a woman. He wants all-consuming love, before it's too late. To say he is a romantic would be a dramatic understatement. However, this secret desire can make him a little... naive. Because his head is constantly in the clouds, always trying to romanticise everything that happens to him, he can be a little oblivious to manipulation. Well, he's a little oblivious anyway but mainly about people's intentions.

The bottom line is that Oliver is always at war with himself. What he is and what he is supposed to be clash in his head like swords. Desperation to honour his family name whilst still clinging on to the parts of himself that he can't give up make him tired at times. He is trying to balance two personas, but somewhere deep inside, he knows that he can't keep up like this. What he really craves is a quiet hillside, his head cradled in his lovers lap, staring up at the sky whilst listening to beautiful poetry. An idealistic snapshot of a life he knows he can never have, but longs for anyway.

HOBBIES
-Parent Chosen Hobbies-
Fencing
Oliver first started fencing when he was eight. It was an attempt by his parents, primarily his father, to get him to be more... well, boyish. He wanted Ollie to learn how to take blows and give them back, maybe build up to some more manly qualities that would blossom into a fine young man. It didn't quite go to plan. During his first lesson, Ollie had two tantrums and cried almost constantly. He did this every day for about a month, until he realised that no amount of tears were going to get him out of it, so he just took it. He learnt, slowly but surely, until it wasn't a punishment and just an inconvenience. He never really wanted to participate in something that violent anyway. He was a passive creature, not a combative one.

Archery
This hobby was not actually by his father's request, but his mothers. She was worried about the amount of time he spent inside, curled up in the library or wandering the halls, and so got an instructor to teach him to shoot. He'd hated this marginally less than the fencing, because it required a great deal less agility, something Oliver can occasionally lack. Yes, he's basically a little clumsy.

-Actual Hobbies-
Creation
This is quite a vague title because this hobby relates to a lot of things. Poetry, art, music. Anything that sparks that hint of joy in Ollie's chest and makes him feel happy. He'll happily spend hours scrawling in his notebook or sketching in the garden, or even sitting at the piano figuring out a tune. He is an artist and the world is his canvas.

OPINIONS ON THE TOPICS ;

SEXISM
Oliver honestly is a little oblivious to the sexism that many experience. As a male who is only really interested in other males, his knowledge on women and the struggles they face are slim. Despite being the kind of person who will listen and help anyone, he is remarkably ignorant of the topic. Of course he's aware of the differences in opportunities that the genders receive, but it never really meant anything to him. After all, it doesn't affect him and he's probably too busy reading or having internal conflict to stop and wonder how he'd feel if he were in a women's position. Though, if he ever did stop and take the time to think it over, he'd probably come to the conclusion that if people aren't happy, then there is something that should change.

— THE MARRIAGE MART
Perhaps Oliver's opinions on the marriage mart are a little biased considering he hates the whole process with a passion. It doesn't matter that it is considered essential to society or that he needs it in order to become Lord Hawthorne (a title he's sort of dreading anyway), it is still a right pain in his neck. The whole process is stifling to a degree that he didn't think was possible. How is he supposed to fulfil his dreams of finding someone to love if he is obligated to find a wife?

— THE ROYAL FAMILY
Oliver doesn't really have very strong feelings towards the Royal Family. Sure, they're important, perhaps the most important depending on your perspective, but still, he never really has much to say about them. He neither has a fond opinion on them, nor a negative one. Why should he? His parents fawn over them like they are Gods, always sucking up and trying to get in good favor, but Oliver prefers to keep his distance. If they don't know of his existence then they can hardly have an opinion on him either. He is anonymous.

— HOMOSEXUALITY
Funnily enough, for a long time Oliver believed homosexuality to be scandalous, a downright forbidden thing that should never be tampered with. Over the years, that view has quite obviously changed. He honestly can't figure out what's wrong with it. He's gone through every excuse, every explanation as to why he shouldn't like other men, but nothing makes sense to him. What's so wrong with marrying someone of the same sex? Everyone is human after all, it shouldn't matter really what gender they are. Of course, he doesn't really voice these particular opinions because if his parents found out then... he doesn't know what would happen, but he can guarantee that it wouldn't be good. Not for his family's reputation and definitely not for him.

EXTRA
•Got a cat named Fluffles for his twelfth birthday, and it's still alive. It's a nasty thing that likes to scratch and bite, but Oliver loves him anyway

•Plays a couple instruments, the piano and harp mainly, but try to get him to play anything else and it sounds a little like Fluffles on a bad day
