6. Promises and Legends

You were alone in the castle gardens, watching as small, bright fireflies circled around you. Your sister thought that it would be a good idea for everyone to rest before going off to look for Xavier and so you did. Well, they did. Instead, you were here, sitting on the same stone bench you always had.

You avoided sleeping, not wanting to get another one of your weird nightmares. You looked up towards the many stars hovering above you. There was something so soothing about the garden, you couldn't explain it. The garden was your happy place, it was a place you could call your own.

Taking in a deep breath, you recalled everything that had happened today. First of all, you helped a thief rob your father and you were almost caught red handed. And second, Varian tried to kiss you! Or at least you thought he tried to. Boys are confusing.

You sighed, getting up and heading back towards your room. Who cares if you get another bad dream? It's just that, a dream, it's not like it would actually happen. You collapsed onto your bed, falling asleep almost imediately (Me after school).

For a while all you saw was a glowing, white light. You looked around confusingly. As you stood there you saw three small symbols pop up in front of you. You tried walking closer to them, but you were unable to move around. You squinted your eyes, trying to get a better look at what they were, but before you could make out an image your eyes shot open.

You awoke to the sound of knocking on your door. You let out a small groan and yelled, "Hold up, I'm coming!" You got out of bed and walked towards your dresser, the sun shining from your windows. You glanced at yourself in the mirror, startled by the way you looked. You grabbed a brush, trying to comb through the tangled, (h/c) mess you called hair. Key word: trying.

You sighed, giving up. 'This'll do, I guess,' you thought to yourself, placing the brush down. The knocking returned as you made your way to the door. "Yes?" you sang as you opened your bedroom doors. Standing there was Varian wearing a tan shirt with a maroon vest over it. (Basically his season 3 outfit)

"Oh, uh hey (Y/n)!" he greeted awkwardly, "Um...good morning!" You watched as Varian stood there, avoiding eye contact with you.

You let out an equally as awkward smile, "Yeah uh, good morning to you too, what's up?" you asked.

'Please don't talk about yesterday, please don't talk about yesterday!' you chanted to yourself. Varian's face flushed, "So (Y/n), about yesterday..." he started. 'Andddd he's talking about yesterday,' you mentally groaned. Varian scanned the hallway around you, seeing a few handmaidens walking by. "Um, could we actually talk about this somewhere else...you know, alone?" he asked gesturing to your room.

"Oh, sure!" you answered. You stepped aside, holding the door for him to enter. He walked in as you shut the doors. You turned to face him, an awkward smile finding it's way onto your face. You sat down on your unmade bed while Varian stood near the doorway.

He blushed, trying to pick his next few words out carefully. He sighed, "I just wanted to say sorry about what happened at the treasury. I didn't mean to make anything awkward between us, I-I just didn't know what came over me!" he stammered. Varian panicked, about to leave the room, "I know that you probably hate me and I completely u-understand if you do! I'd hate myself too if I were-"

"Varian!" you yelled, interrupting him from leaving, "I don't hate you, I never did!"

Varian paused. "Oh. Well. Okay. Thank you," he said awkwardly.

You let out a small smile, "Don't mention it." The room fell silent. There was a strange tension in the air. You sighed, patting a spot on the bed. Varian sat beside you as you cleared things up, "You don't have to apologize, you know? We were just messing around, it's not like you did anything wrong. And even if you did, whatever it was, I'd still be your friend."

Varian smiled back at you, "Promise?"

You nodded. "Only if you promise that you'll do the same?"

He chuckled, sticking out his pinky finger, "Deal."

"Deal," you promised, intertwining your finger with his.

Varian looked at the time, seeing that ten minutes had already passed. His eyes widened in realization, "We should get to the courtyard, Rapunzel said to meet everyone there at eight."

You stood up. "Just let me change first," you said looking down at your (f/c) pajamas. Varian nodded, still sitting on your bed. Your face heated up as you tucked a strand of hair behind your ear, "Uh...alone."

Varian's eyes widened, a dark red hue appearing on his face, "R-right! Sorry!" he stuttered, leaving the room.

You arrived at the courtyard, seeing everyone already there waiting for you. "Hey there moody!" Lance greeted, ruffling your hair. You mentally groaned, remembering Lance's existence. He asked to room with Eugene last night saying that it would be a 'nice manly bonding time'. "I was starting to think that you left without us!"

Eugene shoved Lance by his shoulder. "You said you learned how to keep your thoughts to yourself!" he scolded.

"I said I will learn, will learn. I didn't say that I knew how to," Lance corrected. 'Looks like manly bonding time didn't go quite as expected,' you thought.

Eugene was about to charge at Lance until Cass held him in place. Rapunzel stepped up, trying to ignore the boys' outburst, "Anyway, Lance, where does Xavier live?"

Lance led the group out of the courtyard saying, "He lives just across Monty's Sweet Shoppe. He's the blacksmith."

"So that's who lives there," you piped in, "I've never seen anyone work there so I just thought it was abandoned."

"Nope! But I've heard that he's a very closed off person. That's probably why you don't see him often," Lance shrugged.

The six of you made your way across the kingdom, Rapunzel occasionally stopping to greet people. When you finally reached the old looking smithy you noticed a man in a brown apron working on a small, iron blade. His gaze was so focused on his work that he didn't even notice you there.

Varian walked up to him, waving his hands in front of the man's face. "Um, excuse me sir but are you Xavier?" he asked.

The man looked up, placing the blade down on the anvil. He stared at Varian and nodded, "Yes, and you are?"

"I'm Varian," he said stepping aside, revealing the rest of you, "And these are my friends."

Xavier scanned the rest of the group, his eyes settling on you and your sister. "Ah, Princess Rapunzel and Princess (Y/n), what brings you here?" he asked.

Your sister smiled showing her perfect, pearly white teeth. "Hi Xavier!" she cheered, "We were just wondering if you had the time to help us with something, we don't want to bother you."

Xavier grinned, "What is it?"

You motioned Varian for the piece of paper you two found. He handed it to you as you asked, "Do you know anything about...this?" You showed him the paper.

You watched as his eyes scanned the paper then widening in surprise. "Your highnesses, are you really sure you want to know about this?" he asked raising an eyebrow.

You looked towards your sister, asking for permission to go on. When she nodded you said, "Yes...we're sure."

The blacksmith walked towards a chest and pulled out a small letter. "This is a legend older than time itself. Only a few people remember it, while the rest of the world forgets," he explained.

The six of you stared at him questioningly, waiting for the man to continue. You watched as Xavier read aloud, "Before the creation of mankind the universe was filled with nothing but an endless void. That is...until the sun gave us life. The world was a peaceful place filled with happiness and joy," he paused, "But when the light shines darkness always follows. The moon was created bringing death and destruction to everything that laid eyes on it, yet some thought that the moon was a beautiful sight and wanted everyone to praise it. Soon the world was split in half, light verses dark, good verses evil. A war broke out, chaos sweeping the world. While some fought for the sun and some for the moon there was a small percentage of people who believed that balance was the answer, these people were referred to as the stars. And so they made an army, defeating both sides and establishing peace. That peace meant that the sun, moon, and stars would hold no power. Every last drop of magic was dried up leaving the world how it is today."

"So what does this have to do with the paper?" Cass asked.

The man chuckled, "I'm about to get there. Even though they say every inch of magic was lost for good, some believe that a drop of each celestial body landed on earth. A drop of the sun, moon, and stars gave it's power to whatever thing they touched. The legend calls these mystery objects The Celestial Elements. We already know of one, the sundrop and how it landed on a flower giving it the power to heal. There are two more elements out there with their own special abilities," Xavier pointed towards the piece of paper in your hand, "They come with their own incantation spell, when said will give the user all of it's power. If you find the rest of the pieces, put them together, and translate it correctly you would have successfully figured out the spell and all you would have to do would be to find the rest of the objects."

You were puzzled. He basically summed up a whole history lesson in less than a few minutes. "If the sundrop has the power to heal, then what are the other's powers?" Varian asked curiously.

Xavier turned the letter he was reading around for you all to see. "No one knows, the only clue is this poem," he cleared his throat,

"One gives life when it hears it's call
The other will be Corona's fall
Hidden in a palace of black
But when you go you can't turn back
Hurry up you should listen
Go too slow the time is ticking
The last one sees your deepest fears
Past and present throughout the years
Can't do anything, it feels useless
Hidden away in the place it chooses."

A long silence filled the air as the six of you tried to figure out what the poem meant. "Hurry up you should listen, go to slow the time is ticking. It's a warning..." Rapunzel stated, her gaze scanning the words, "We need to find these elements before something happens."

Varian's eyes landed on the paper in your hands. "Guys..." he said catching everyone's attention, "The legend says that the moon's drop landed on something, what if that thing controls the black rocks?" he pointed to the paper, "It's hard to tell but there's a black looking spike on the paper we found."

Your eyes widened seeing a small spike on where the moon's drop was suppose to land. You remembered what Varian had mentioned about them, "Varian said that we only have a few weeks until the rocks hit Corona, right? What if that's what it's warning us about?" you concluded.

"Holy moly, I think you're onto something!" Eugene gawked.

Cass' eyebrows furrowed, "It's already been a week since they appeared, who knows how much time we have left. Like Raps said, we need to find those elements before time runs out..."

You glanced at the letter Xavier was holding. You gasped in shock. Printed on the letter were three, small symbols. The same symbols from your dream. "What is it (Y/n)?" your sister asked concerned.

Were your dreams becoming real? You panicked, unable to process what was happening, "I-I have to tell you guys something..."
