3. Alone Together

You were lost, stranded in someplace unfamiliar to you. You stood in a long hallway, so long that you could barely see the end of it. The walls surrounding you were a dark shade of grey with detailed pillars holding up the ceiling.

There was no sound and yet, you weren't alone. Standing in front of you was a women, her back turned so you were unable to see her face. She had short, bright blue hair and a black sort of suit on. The silence broke when you heard fast footsteps coming your way.

You were unable to move, forced to watch whatever was about to happen. You saw four figures, Eugene, Varian, your sister, and finally...you. They seemed to be having a conversation with the blue haired girl, but you couldn't hear what they were saying. After a few seconds of complete silence you finally heard a part of their conversation:

"We can help you! We can figure this out together! Just...wait," it was your sister saying these words.

The women in front of you was angered by that. She lifted one hand in the air making hundreds of black rocks sprout up. The rocks headed straight towards your friends and the other you. You tried to see what was happening but soon noticed that some rocks were heading in your direction as well. You tried moving, but it was useless. The black rocks were too fast. You decided to stop struggling and take the blow. You opened your eyes one last time, a rock about to pierce through your heart.

You woke up sweat running down your face. You looked around making sure your mind wasn't playing another trick on you. Ever since you touched the black rocks last week you've been getting nightmares, sometimes when you aren't even sleeping.

Chills went up your spine as you recalled what had happened in your vision. It felt so real and yet so fake. You were standing there helpless, unable to control what was happening.

You got up quickly making your bed and getting yourself ready for the day. Today, you and your family had to answer complaints and requests from the citizens of Corona. Faith helped you get into your (f/c) (Favorite color) dress and some light makeup. The dress was like your sister's but with a simpler design, it was a surprisingly comfortable gown, that's why it was your favorite.

You made your way towards the throne room already seeing Rapunzel inside. There were four thrones one for each member of the royal family. You sat next to your sister as your parents entered the room. The guards opened the castle door revealing a long line of people.

You watched as your sister answered most of the towns people's problems. "Thank you Princess Rapunzel, you'll be an incredible queen some day!" a citizen complemented. Your eyebrows furrowed as you decided that you'd answer the next person's question.

"Your highnesses, the orphanage has run out of food and supplies to care for the children. What should we do?" the old woman asked. You were about to answer when someone did it for you.

"Oh! Oh! How about a donation campaign!" your sister suggested, "Others can donate supplies and the children won't go hungry!"

You frowned sinking into your seat. An hour passed by and for each question you tried to answer you'd always either get interrupted by Rapunzel or by your parents. You felt useless, you couldn't do anything except sit and watch. You clenched your fist just about ready to storm out of the room when you heard a familiar voice.

"Your majesty, the black rocks are spreading faster than I intended," it was Varian, "I was hoping that I could stay in the castle, o-only for a few months! So that I could have enough time to figure out what's causing them to grow."

Your father's eyes widened, "I can assure you boy, that the royal council is figuring out how to get rid of these rocks. There's no point in you trying to find a solution when plenty of others are already doing so,"

"Actually dad, I think it'd be a good idea! It wouldn't hurt to have at least one more person to help!" your sister said in her usual cheery voice.

The king glanced at your mother for approval. The queen nodded causing your father to sigh, "Fine, you can stay at the castle for three months, but if you find out nothing you leave and promise never to meddle with these rocks!" your father stated. Varian nodded, "Alright then, (Y/n)? Can you please show this young man to one of the guest rooms?"

'Typical,' you thought. Your father always let your sister do the important work while you were left doing whatever else he needed to be done. You mentally sighed as you got up from your seat. You led Varian out into the hallway immediately feeling tension in the air.

"Sooo...princess, uh...how are you?" he piped in awkwardly.

You flinched at his sudden outburst, "I'm alright, how's Old Corona doing? You said the rocks had gotten worse?"

"It's...not doing the best..." he said scratching the back of his head. You frowned, feeling sympathy towards the boy, "Houses are getting destroyed, shops demolished. My dad's been trying to help out though, so that's good,"

Varian was walking beside you as you talked, "So um, you asked how I was, how are you doing?" you asked trying to break the ice.

"Well 'cause you asked, the intelligent and resorceful Varian is doing great now," he answered jokingly. You chuckled at his awkwardness.

The two of you turned the corner as you opened the doors to Varian's new room, "Ta-da!" you dramatically said showing off the room. There were long banners with Corona's symbol printed on them, a huge wardrobe, a bookcase, and a desk for Varian to do his work on.

Varian looked around shocked, "Whoa! It's huge! I can't believe that I'll be staying here for three entire months!" he laughed examining the detail on the banners

"Yep! And I'm right next door, so if you need anything just knock," you said standing next to him, "Anyway, how'd you convince your father to let you stay here?"

Varian stopped fiddling with the banner and turned to you, "Well...he didn't exactly agree to it. When he was busy helping the towns people I left a note for him and left,"

"You snuck out?!" you asked stunned, "I never thought you were the type of person who'd do that,"

Varian bit his lower lip, "Probably because I'm not...I just want to prove to my father that I can get rid of the black rocks. In my village I'm known as the pest, so I decided to do something to change that. Sometimes I feel like he underestimates me when all I wanna do is to make him proud, you know?" his blue eyes wandered until they stayed locked on yours.

You smiled sadly at him, "I get it. Even though I live in a castle with a bunch of people I  still feel like-"

"You feel like you're alone?" Varian asked finishing your sentence.

"Yeah...exactly," you looked down breaking eye contact, "It's like whenever I'm with Rapunzel everyone notices her first. I mean, she is my sister but sometimes I'm tired of always being in her shadow. I know it sounds selfish but I want someone to see me...as me and not just as the little sister of Rapunzel."

Varian held out his hand, "Maybe we can be alone...together," he smiled. You looked up at him, his eyes shining with comfort.

"Yeah...together," you said shaking his hand, "It's nice to have a friend who understands you..."

Varian mentally winced not knowing why. He stared at the young princess in front of him wondering what she meant when she said that no one notices her. He's only known her for a week and could already tell that she was special.

As he looked at her he unconsciously leaned against the banner, "Whoa!" Varian yelled as he fell through. He hit the floor of a different room landing with an 'oof'. When he looked up he saw that he fell through a hole in the wall the banner was covering.

"Varian! Are you alright?!" you asked moving the banner away to peak through the hole.

Varian, still laying on the floor, held a thumbs up smiling a dorky smile, "Yep, t-totally fine!"

You stepped into the dark room helping Varian get up, "I've never seen this place before..." you mumbled giving Varian a hand. The boy got up immediately scanning the room for a light source. All you saw was the dusty floor and that's it. It was so dark that you could barely see what was in front of you.

The fifteen year old let out a small, "Aha!" as he got something out from his satchel. He held up a small box of matches attempting to light one. When the match was lit the room seemed to increase in size. He handed you a second match before going off to search the area.

The secret room was almost as large as the guest bedroom on the other side of the wall. Looking around you noticed dozens of ancient-looking books disorganized, dust covered papers hanged up, random writing on the wall, and cobwebs scattered around. But the thing that caught your eye the most was a large circular table in the middle of the room.

You walked towards it feeling the same unusual pull that you felt when you touched the black rocks. As you stepped closer the pull felt more aggressive as if something wanted you to come closer. You inspected the table, picking up a paper covered in dust. Your hand grazed the paper revealing a picture of the sun dripping onto famous sun drop flower. In the corner you noticed the moon doing the same but onto something unknown. Half the paper was ripped.

"Hey Varian...I think you need to see this," you called out. Varian came to your side just as confused as you were.

"I think it's in some ancient language...I can try and translate it if I have enough resources!" he said, excited to work on a new project.

You looked up at him seriously, "Varian, look," you pointed at the moon dripping onto something, "If the sun drop has the power to heal, then what could the moon's be?"

Varian's eyes widened as he inspected the paper, "I don't know...but what I do know is that it's dangerous. Someone wouldn't take their time to hide this if it wasn't, and where's the other pieces?"

"We've got to tell my father, if this was hidden in the castle then the other pieces might be too!" you said.

Varian put the paper in his satchel, "Then let's go! The castle is huge, the king could be anywhere!" he yelled running out of the room.

You were about to follow him, but a strange feeling told you to stay. Without your consent you're eyes moved from Varian to the writing scribbled on the wall. You stepped closer, it read: Let your anger flow, and finally ignite.

Your head started pounding once again and your sight became hazy. You felt like you were about to pass out until a voice broke you from your daze, "Princess?" you turned around seeing Varian looking at you confused, "Are you coming?"

"Yeah...yeah let's go," you said, glancing at the writing one last time.

The two of you left the room attempting to find your father, "Hey Varian?" you asked out of the blue.

The boy tilted his head, "Yes princess?"

"We're friends now, you can just call me (Y/n)," you smiled turning the corner.

Varian stood there, his face turning a light shade of pink, "Hey prin- I mean (Y/n)! Wait up!"

Let your anger flow, and finally ignite.
