2. The Young Alchemist
"Uhhh...surprise!" your sister awkwardly cheered.
Eugene pitched in saying the dumbest line you've ever heard, "Would you believe that this was a wig?" Cassandra rolled her eyes.
You picked up the golden locks, "I'm gonna pretend you didn't say that,"
"(Y/n), we can explain!" your sister said. Cassandra's eyes widened when she heard that.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, Raps a word?" Cass asked. You and Eugene made eye contact, confused on what she wanted to talk about. Cass's eyes landed on the two of you, "Alone."
"Keeping secrets now are we?" Eugene stated, his hands on his hips.
"Yeah, sure, whatever," Cass pushed us outside the room, slamming the door in your faces.
Eugene gasped, "Ugh! How rude!" you tried listening in on the conversation, but couldn't make out a thing they were saying.
A few minutes passed and Cass re-opened the door. Eugene was going to ask something but got caught off by Rapunzel, "My hair...uh...grew back over night! Magically!" you could tell she was lying but decided that she'd tell you eventually. Eugene decided to let Rapunzel keep her secret too and the day went by normally.
-Present Day-
You were in your bedroom reading (f/b) (Favorite book) when you heard a small knock on your door, "Coming!" you yelled placing your book down. You opened the door and standing there was Cassandra and Rapunzel, "What's up?" you asked leaning against the door frame.
"(Y/n), we need to tell you something very important! You have to promise you won't tell anyone," Rapunzel stated. The two came in, Cass locking the door.
"Alright, what is it?" you asked.
"Well..." yours sister mumbled, "we mayyyy have snuck out a week ago, seen some strange rocks, touched said rocks, got chased, and yeah...my hair grew back,"
You stood there puzzled, "Excuse me, what?"
"I helped Raps sneak out of the castle," Cass said crossing her arms.
"Okay, I understand that part but why did your hair grow back when you touched a rock?" You asked. You've heard stories about magical objects but never magical rocks.
"That's actually why we're here," Cass started off, "I've heard villagers talk about this wizard, Varian. We've decided to go and see if he has any answers about Raps' hair."
"And I thought that it'd be a good idea to bring you along!" your sister added, "It'll be fun! A little sister bonding trip!"
You thought about it for a moment, "Sure, I have nothing to do anyway," Rapunzel cheered, happy that you would get to spend time together.
Meanwhile on the other side of the door a certain ex-thief was pressing his ear against the wooden frame. "Did you hear that frog?" Eugene whispered, "Those girls are hiding something and I'm gonna find out what!"
Pascal made slight hand gestures, Eugene apparently understanding whatever the little lizard had to say, "What do you mean eavesdropping?! I'm honestly offended that you think I of all people would do such a thing!" Eugene replied turning his back away from the reptile, "I'm just listening in on a conversation like a normal human being!"
Eugene leaned against the door again but got slammed right in the smolder. The three girls exited the room not noticing the poor man dizzy out of his mind.
Pascal laughed at the man on the floor, "Pascal? Why is there three of you..." Eugene asked wobbling from side to side eventually passing out on the floor.
About thirty minutes later the three of you arrived in Old Corona. "So this is where Varian lives?" Rapunzel asked. Cass simply nodded, tying Maximus and Fidella to a fence.
"I've never seen the outskirts of Corona before..." you said looking around, "now I know why it's called Old Corona," The village homes weren't as stable as the ones in the kingdom and the streets were unkept. They sure did need to fix up this town.
"There!" Cassandra pointed. Varian's house was huge, or at least bigger than most of the houses you've passed by. The three of you walked up to the large, wooden doors but when you were about to knock on it they swung open by themselves. You all looked at each other questioningly stepping into the large, fog-filled room.
"Watch your step, we don't know what could be in here," Cassandra warned.
Rapunzel laughed it off, "It's just a bit of fog, how dangerous could it be?"
You took another step tripping over a rope, a slight 'yelp' sound made it's way out of yours lips. The next thing you knew you were all caught up in some sort of slime. "Apparently very dangerous," you said answering your sister's question.
Cass tried poking at the goo with her sword, "We're fine, everything's gonna be okay all we need to do is find a way out-"
"Uh...guys..." you and Cass looked at the direction Rapunzel was pointing. A dark figure was emerging out of the fog. It looked to have a large cloak and a gas mask on, the strangest thing about the figure was it's eyes. A light green hue shined brightly from the mask.
The figure spoke, it's voice deep and haunting, "What do you want?!"
You were seriously considering just booking it back to the palace, but sadly your feet were basically nailed to the ground, "Um...hi! So sorry to bother you sir, but we came to ask you about my hair...because you're such a...um...such a magic expert,"
Whatever your sister said sure did make the figure angry. The man's voice boomed, "Magic?! I do not work with magic..." the next thing he did was extremely unexpected. The figure lifted the mask of his head revealing a boy about your age, "I mean technically it's not magic, it's alchemy but d-don't sweat it,"
The boy had dark, black hair and light blue eyes complementing a single blue streak in his hair. He removed his cloak revealing brown overalls and a teal blue shirt underneath. To finish the outfit off, he had a familiar set of large metal goggles attached to his head. To say the least, he was nothing like how you'd expect.
"Wait, so you're the great and powerful Varian?" you asked, air-quoting 'great and powerful'.
"Yeeep! But great and powerful aren't really the words I'd use. I'm more...intelligent and resourceful!" Varian replied.
Cass rolled her eyes, "Well then, can the 'intelligent and resourceful' Varian get us out of this goo?" she said impatiently. Varian nodded reaching for something in his pocket.
He poured some liquid out of a bottle and onto the purple slime. After he finished he stood up getting a better look at the three of you. When his eyes landed on you and your sister he froze jumping backwards a little. He immediately kneeled down in front of the two of you, "I'm so sorry, your highnesses,"
You and Rapunzel shared a confused look, "Your highnesses? You know who we are?" your sister asked.
You let out a small 'pfft', "You know who I am?" everyone obviously knew who Rapunzel was, her hair was a dead giveaway, but you on the other hand looked like every other normal girl in Corona.
"Duh! How could I not? You two are the heirs to the kingdom!" Varian started suddenly regretting what he said, "Or uh...actually heir and um...ex-heir...no offense, your highness!" the boy quickly said giving you an awkward but sympathetic smile.
You sighed, "None taken..."
"Great!" Varian said getting up to examine Rapunzel's hair, "So, fantastical stories of your hair returning have spread throughout Corona, personally I don't believe that magic is the reason it grew back. As you can probably tell I'm a man of science and..." Varian rambled on.
Cassandra was getting bored of the conversation so she nudged you on the shoulder and jokingly whispered, "Man of science? He's hardly even a man!" you snorted at her comment probably too loud because Varian stopped talking and stared at you two questioningly.
After a while Varian concluded that he could 'unlock the mystery' of your sister's hair and all he had to do was run a few tests. Rapunzel was layed down on a table while Varian examined her golden locks closely.
"Alright, so you said you wanted to anything and everything about your hair, correct?" Varian asked.
"That's right" Rapunzel replied standing up.
"Good!" Varian removed a cloth covering two inventions that you could only describe to be a torture device, "Now the first thing we need to do is see the diference between you and your family's dna to see what makes your hair special. Princess (Y/n), since you're the only relative we have at the moment would you please lay down on the table over there?"
"Wait, no one said anything about me having to be in this experiment!" you defensively said.
"Well you don't really have much of a choice here..." Cassandra said, "Raps needs info on her hair and we can't ride back to Corona just to get the king or queen,"
You sighed, "Alright, but if anything happens-"
"Don't worry princess! I'm 99.6% sure that nothing unsafe will happen to you!" Varian assured you. You layed on the table, Rapunzel laying on the one beside you.
"Okay! Ready?!" Varian asked. Rapunzel nodded allowing him to start, "In three...two...one..." Varian was about to pull the lever but someone stopped him.
The door of the lab was busted open by none other then Eugene Fitzherbert himself. "You are not about to kill my girlfriend and my future sister-in-law!" he screamed.
Everyone turned to look at him, silence filling the room until Varian yelled, "Hey, you're Flynn Rider!" he continued to fanboy on and on about Eugene. Rapunzel, Cass, and you looked at each other as if asking 'what should we do?'.
A few minutes passed and Varian was still talking with Eugene about the latest Flynn Rider book. Rapunzel was about to yell at them to stop, when the ground started violently shaking.
"Guys! Something's happening!" Cass announced catching the boys' attention. The floor around you shook at rapid speeds causing glass tubes to fall on the floor and books to scatter everywhere.
Varian looked around puzzled, "That's strange...Old Corona never gets earthquakes..." you unhooked yourself from the table then quickly stummbled to help your sister get out of her's. Suddenly the shaking unnaturally stopped at a halt.
"Well that was weird," Eugene said picking up a fallen book off the floor.
"It sounded like it came from outside..." Rapunzel stated walking towards the front door. You all decided to go as teams and check outside for anything that may have caused the ground to shake so bad. Rapunzel and Cassandra explored the village, Eugene and Maximus went to check the fields, and Varian and you were chosen to search the forest.
Twenty minutes passed and you found nothing except damaged properties and animals running loose , "Varian, what if the earthquake was just that...a normal earthquake?" you asked turning towards the boy.
Varian sighed, looking past the bushes, "I guess you're ri-right...uh...princess! I think you need to see this!" you ran up beside him as he pushed some leaves out of the way revealing a pile of black rocks sprouting from the ground. Your eyes widened.
You felt a magnetic pull forcing you to step closer and touch the rocks. "Princess!? What are you doing?!" Varian yelled, but it was like you couldn't hear him. To you, all sound was eliminated except for the voices in your head telling you to go forward. Your skull was pounding and your feet moved on their own. "Princess!" Varian screamed again trying to snap you out of your daze.
By now you were right in front of the rocks reaching out to touch them. You rested your palm on the cold surface, your eyes turning black. You blinked realizing you weren't in Old Corona anymore. Echoing voices were heard from behind you. You turned seeing Varian sobbing.
"(Y/n) please, you have to trust me!" the boy cried, "I'm warning you, you're not safe! You need to hide!" Varian ran faster getting closer and closer until he ran through you. You were like a ghost, able to see things, yet unable to change the outcome.
You turned around again finally seeing what Varian was running towards. It was you. Well, another you. The duplicate spoke but you couldn't hear what she was saying. Varian yelled a final time, "Y/n!" then everything faded to black.
You opened your eyes with a gasp, returning to the actual world. "Princess! Thank God you're okay!" Varian said. You looked around seeing the whole gang surrounding you.
"What happened?! Your eyes literally turned black! It was like you were possessed!" Eugene asked receiving a punch and glare from Cassandra. You scratched your head, remembering everything that you'd seen.
"It's nothing! Nothing happened!" You lied not wanting them to think you were crazy. Picturing a double you and seeing things that never happened weren't exactly 'normal'.
Your sister, trying to change the subject said, "Well then, today's been a long day I think it's about time we go. Thanks for trying to help Varian,"
You were about to leave when Varian lightly tugged on your arm, "Hey, what really happened when you touched those rocks?" he asked in a serious yet worried tone.
You shook him off giving your best fake smile, "I told you, it was nothing! I was just distracted,"
Varian frowned letting go of you, "Alright...if you say so,"
-------------------------------
Hey guys! It's my first author's note! Sorry if this chapter was longer than usual. I just wanted to clear some things up about this book.
The first two chapters were about things that happened before the time this book is set that's why they weren't that exciting. Chapter one was a re-telling of Y/n's experience when Rapunzel was found and chapter two was set a week before the book. In chapter two I wanted to show that Uncle Monty was nicer than what the show portrayed him as. I also wanted to give him a better reason for not liking Rapunzel. I want this book is to be different from other Varian x reader stories. I based the plot off the show and other books that inspired me, but changed it in ways to fit my vision. I promise that the next few chapters will be more interseting!
I want to thank ya'll again for reading, I spent a lot of time thinking of a unique plot and ways to make this story interesting. I'm so thankful that at least some people will read this, it makes me so happy! Have a great rest of your day/night!
