~ Chapter Twenty Seven ~
Inside Klaus's bedroom, he searched high and low for drugs, wanting to be away from the real world, even if it was just for a few hours. Handling his sobriety wasn't always one of his best achievements. "What are you doing?" Ben asked as his brother continued his search. "Looking for drugs," He said bluntly. Ben bit back a sigh, thinking that his brother was finally about to let go of his past addictions. But in the back of his mind, he knew Klaus wouldn't make it a week. "Don't do it," he sighed.
"I am done listening to you! Just go away, please," Klaus snapped. "I like the sober you," Ben commented. "Sobriety's overrated. Where has it gotten me? Nowhere. I can't talk to the person I love. Nobody takes me seriously anymore! Not even Dusk, and she's my only living friend! I wanna be numb again!" Ben was determined not to let his brother slip into his bad habits again. He would do whatever was necessary to keep him sober, even if he was a ghost.
"Life isn't supposed to be easy. Bad things happen, and good people die," Ben said calmly. "Wow, playing the dead card again, huh? You need new material, bro," the junkie scoffed as he tore open a stuffed animal and took out a small bag of pills. "I'm tired of seeing you wallow in self-defeat. You're better than that. And Dave? He knew it, too," Klaus looked at his dead brother, staring into his eyes for a moment before sighing with defeat.
"Yeah, you're right. I'm sorry," he muttered, his gaze shifting to the ground. "Thank god," Ben sighed with relief, thinking he had finally convinced him after all these years. But he had no idea how wrong he was. "Psych!" Klaus shouted, popping the pills into his mouth, but before he could swallow them, Ben without warning, punched him in the mouth, making the pills clatter to the floor. "Ow!" Klaus gasped, cupping his jaw in his hands.
Klaus was surprised. In the years that he had Ben follow him around, he had never been able to touch him. "You just Patrick Swayzeed me. How did you do that?" Klaus asked. "I... I didn't. You did. I think?"

It was the last day until the world ended. And the clock was ticking on finding Vanya. Dusk wouldn't admit it to the others, but she was growing more anxious by the second. "The bastard that nearly killed our sister is still out there with Vanya. We need to go after her," Diego tried to persuade Five, watching as he paced back and forth across the living room. "Vanya is not important," Five said without hesitation.
"Hey! That's our sister! A little heartless even for you, Five," Dusk growled. "I'm not saying I don't care about her, Dusk. But if the apocalypse happens today, she dies along with the other seven billion of us. Harold Jenkins is our first priority," he explained. Diego seemed easily convinced of the plan and agreed. "Come on, let's go," he said, looking at Dusk and Klaus. The raven got off the couch, joining her brothers, hoping Klaus would be coming as well.
"You guys count me out. I mean, no offense. It's just... I feel like this is a lot of pressure for newly-sober me, so..." Klaus trailed off. "You're coming with us, Klaus," Dusk said, looking directly into his green eyes. "I think we can all agree that my power is pretty much useless. I'd just be holding you guys back," He tried to reason, but through every excuse he threw at them, the siblings were not buying it. "Klaus, get up," Diego said sternly. "You can't make me!"
Diego threw one of his knives at the couch, landing a few inches away from Klaus's body, and it made Dusk jump slightly. Klaus looked over at Number Two, a small huff escaping his lips as he got up. "What the hell, Diego? You didn't have to do that!" Dusk hissed. "Worked, didn't it?" He smirked. The raven didn't have the time or the patience to deal with his antics. She was already dealing with one of her sisters nearly on her deathbed. And the other in the company of a serial killer. She did not want anything else to happen to her family. Especially Vanya and Klaus.
"Vanya? Are you here?" Dusk asked as she walked into Herald Jenkins' home. She continued calling her name as she went up the stairs. But to her dismay, her sister was nowhere to be found. "Dusk, get down here!" She quickly ran down the stairs, hoping that they had found her. But instead, she found a man lying on a broken dining table, with multiple knives lodged in his chest. "Oh my god!" She gasped. She had seen a lot of messed-up things in her life. But never before had she seen anything like this.
"We need to get out of here before the cops come," Diego said as Five stared at the corpse of Vanya's boyfriend. "In a minute," he said as he stooped down. "Five! There is a dead body in the house! And I am not going to jail for a crime I didn't commit! I don't want to end up like Numbnuts!" Dusk sighed, glaring at Diego, who glared right back at her. Five removed the eye bandage from the corpse and pulled out the glass eye from his blazer.
"Same eye color, same pupil size. Guys, this is it! The eye I've been carrying around for decades has found its rightful home," he slightly smiled. "We got the guy we needed to kill to stop the apocalypse. Can we go home now?" Dusk asked as she looked through the window. "Wait, it can't be this easy. Look, this is the note that I got from the Commission. The one that says, Protect Harold Jenkins aka Leonard Peabody. But who killed him? Who did this?" Five questioned.
"I have a crazy idea. Why don't we find Vanya and ask her what happened?" Klaus suggested as Five blinked away. "If Vanya got away from this asshole, she might be heading back to the Academy," Diego realized.
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's go find her!"
~~~~~~~
"No sign of Vanya," Five said as he met up with Klaus, Diego, and Dusk at the top of the staircase. "Well, then I'm heading out," the vigilante sighed. But as he was about to head downstairs, Five reminded him that Vanya was still out there, as well as Hazel and Cha-cha. "I know. I'm grabbing my things, and then I'm out of here. I got some unfinished business with those fools,"
"Dusk, can you give us a moment alone?" Five asked, looking over at her. "Uh, sure?" She answered, confused. The two brothers watched as their sister walked down the hall, and Five began to question Klaus about his conversation with their father. "Did Dad say anything about the apocalypse when you spoke to him? Any clues as to how it happened?" "Truly terrific shave. But no clues," Klaus answered. Five rolled his eyes, letting out a breath of exasperation as he headed down the stairs with Klaus following behind.
"Come to think of it, he did mention something about my potential and how I've barely even scratched the surface of my-" "How did he know about the apocalypse?" Five interrupted. "I don't know, but listen. This whole jumping through time thing of yours, how did you know how to do that?"
"I didn't. You'd realize that if you were actually sober," Five took a deep breath as he swallowed his frustration. "Hey, I am sober! I've been sober for almost two days now. It feels like 45 years," Klaus tried to defend himself. But the look on Five's face told him he was not buying it because of his constant fidgeting. "I guess we're both fighting our addictions, then. You're addicted to a drug called the apocalypse," Klaus bit back. "You're wrong. You and I are not the same!" Five tightly ground his teeth together, nearly breaking them.
"I've seen that look in the eye of someone who doesn't know who they are without their high anymore. Trust me. You gotta just let it go," Five shook his head and without warning, threw the glass eye at the wall, shattering it into a thousand pieces before storming off.
