~ Chapter Sixty Five ~

"I'm so confused," Diego said a few seconds after Five finished explaining the complicated paradox. "Well, someone killed our mothers, so we shouldn't exist. But clearly, we do exist, and the universe can't handle it, which is a problem," Viktor summarized. The Hargreeves were soon interrupted by Stanley and his consistent practice of karate shouts while flinging around a pool stick.

"Stanley! Now is not the time to be doing karate, okay?" Diego scolded, the tone nearly making Dusk jump from her seat. "Mom and Aunt Victoria said I need to practice!" the twelve-year-old whined. "Yeah well, they aren't wrong. You're very bad." "Well, I saved your pathetic ass!" Stanley pointed out. The amount of sass and sarcasm that could come in such a small package made Dusk's eyebrows quirk up. This little dude has more sass than I did at his age. I like it!

She went back to stroking Klaus's hair as he lay on her lap, glancing down at the photo of his mother and the article about her death. "I'm so sorry things didn't go the way you hoped," the raven whispered. "I thought things would be different here. Since the Sparrows have taken over, I thought I could finally find my other self, and... now most of it's gone," he sniffled.

"Come here," She gestured for him to look at her. He switched positions and did as she asked, feeling her cup his face in her hands. "We'll find out who did this. And when we do, I intend to make them pay, not only for you but for the rest of the family," she swore, wiping away his streaming tears. The look in her eyes proved she meant every word, giving him a little comfort. The raven kissed his forehead before pulling him into her chest, continuing to coo in his ear.

"Hold on. So we caused a paradox, what does it mean?" Allison questioned. "It's hard to say. It's all been theoretical until now, but things have started to disappear," the time traveler answered. "Such as?" Dusk queried. "Uh... lobsters-" "And a shit ton of cows," Klaus muffled. Five continued, claiming that this could be the beginning of something bigger and more serious. Most of the siblings scoffed and shook their heads in disbelief, the typical response to their endless adventure of saving the world.

"Aren't you retired? You know, you can't just keep dragging us through hell because you have an itch only an apocalypse can scratch and then expect us to deal with the fallout. You're not the boss!" Allison folded her arms across her chest. "Fine, I'm the messenger and I'm telling you something terrible is coming," Five spoke slowly, only making Allison even more irritated. "Then if something terrible is coming, let's attack the Sparrows, get the briefcase and go home!"

"Alli, as much as I'd love to go back to the way things were minus the apocalypse, this is our home now," the raven sighed, her gaze still focused on her boyfriend. "That's easy for you to say. You didn't lose a daughter and left your husband in the 60s," her sister bit back. For a moment, Dusk contemplated bringing up leaving Mary and her son but given Allison's current intoxicated state, she'd consider it some contest of grief. And frankly, the fire inside Dusk had settled for the night, and she did not wish to rekindle it.

The silence was soon broken as Stanley was back at it again with the noise, knocking over the rest of the pool stick display. This was the beginning of the end for Diego, as he angrily stormed over to the kid. "That's it. I'm telling your mom!" He growled, grabbing him tightly by the arm. Stanley stuck his tongue out, squinting at his Dad. "Diego, you keep yelling and being rough with that kid, your gonna give him the same amount of trauma Dad gave us," Dusk spoke up.

He ignored her, his gaze turning back to his son before Five questioned the young man on Lila's whereabouts. Stanley responded by claiming she was in the shower and returned a few hours ago. Out of the corner of her eye, Dusk noticed her brother walking toward the showers and immediately called out to him. "Where are you going, Five?" He turned around slightly, taking a sip from his mug of black coffee. "Go talk to somebody who only has half a head up her ass," he responded in his classic sarcastic tone.

Klaus lifted his face from Dusk's chest as soon as he heard those words and begged Five not to leave him, but the time traveler insisted he was leaving. "He has a good track record with this stuff. I feel like we should listen to him," Viktor spoke up. "Hey, quick question. Do none of you heartless bastards care about our murdered moms?" Klaus scoffed, tossing the book on the green-felted pool table.

"Klaus, the only one we ever knew or grew up with was plugged into a wall," Diego commented, stirring the junkie's pot of grief. "Well, this is my real mother..." he picked up the book and showed the vigilante his page. "...She's called Rachel, and I have her eyes!" Klaus turned to the rest of his siblings, hoping they'd say something, but they all remained silent. It pained Dusk to see him acting this way. She hadn't seen him this sad since the Dave incident.

"COME ON! WE NEED TO FIND OUT WHO DID THIS!" He shouted, a choked sob escaping his lips. Dusk placed a comforting hand on his left shoulder blade, whispering, "Take a deep breath, it's okay," "Is that all you care about?" Diego squinted. Klaus nodded, still pouting like an upset puppy. "It's obviously Dad, all right? He knew where we were born, he hated us in 63. BOOM! Murders!"

Klaus shook his head in denial, claiming there was no way their father could be behind all this. And even though most of the siblings claimed their Dad was capable of doing such a thing, Dusk couldn't quite imagine it. "Little late for the meeting, pal," Diego called out, making them turn to see Luther had returned. But he was wearing something a little suspicious, a burgundy red jacket with the Sparrows logo.

"I was being held captive by the Sparrows," He explained. The Hargreeves siblings' eyes widened as not one of them had suspected a thing. As Luther asked them if they even noticed his disappearance, they all jumped in, stammering as they tried to come up with a convenient response. The ape-man looked a little hurt but swallowed it down as he went to join them.

"Did they hurt you?" Dusk asked. "Who, the Sparrows? God no, not at all. Excellent hosts," he shook his head, placing down a gray and red tote bag full of goodies. Okay, I think they brainwashed him. Cause he would try to fight back, right? "I really think we got these guys all wrong," Allison pulled out a record with Ben and a few of the Sparrows on it, turning it around for the rest of them to see. "Says the one they kidnapped,"

"What did they want?" Diego questioned. Luther claimed The Sparrows leader Marcus went missing and thought the Umbrellas kidnapped him, requesting that he be brought back unharmed. "We don't have him. The last time I saw that guy was back at The Academy," the raven explained. Luther's mouth slightly hung open, hoping they could've sorted that problem quickly. "Damn, well there's another problem. People are starting to disappear,"

"We were just talking about that. It's not just people, animals too. But what could be causing all this?" Viktor replied. "Well if it helps, there were these big blues energy waves that went out and pulled things back, probably those missing people and animals," Dusk took a moment to process all this in her head. Not only were their mothers dead, but these energy waves could be a warning sign. Five was right. Something bigger is coming!

"We should wait until Five gets back. He can figure this out, and we can end this madness," Diego stated. The siblings nodded, going their separate ways, with only Dusk staying behind. "You want a drink, hon?" Klaus called out to her. "I'll be down in a second, Klausy," She responded. As her boyfriend went downstairs, Dusk wondered who her mother was. Was she a Harvard graduate? What did she look like?

Carefully not to tear the pages, she glanced at every photo, every location ever recorded. But to her surprise, she only found six women, not seven.

I-I don't understand... where's my mother?
