~ Chapter Seventy ~

"Oh my god. Harlan, is that you?" Viktor gaped. The old man said nothing, only walking towards the corpses of Jayme and Alphonso. Half of their faces had been seared by the beams, almost looking like pieces of raw meat. Though they couldn't see it, there was another Sparrow who had been left behind. But Luther cradled her in his arms, trying to wake her up. "Oh heavens to Betsy, what did you do?" a voice gasped.

Dusk looked up from the corpses relieved to see Klaus was okay, but in shock by what happened in the lobby. "D-did Viktor go full 'Carrie' again?" He stuttered. "We didn't do this," Allison responded, gesturing her gaze towards the old man. Viktor reached out a hand, but he flinched, telling them all to stay away. "I just want to make sure you're okay," Number Seven said comfortingly.

Klaus shifted his gaze from the current situation, seeing the scared look on his lover's face. As he walked past the corpses, she ran into his arms, hugging him as tightly as she could. "God, I was so scared something happened to you," she trembled. Klaus gently shushed her, running a hand through her hair. "I'm okay, I promise," He assured. As the two pulled away, Klaus gestured to Diego and Allison, asking them who was the "creepy grandpa."

"That's the kid Viktor saved in Dallas," Diego replied, making Klaus's eyes widen with realization. "Oh shit, you're right! But didn't he get rid of all that kid's mojo when he did all that convulsing and whatnot?" Dusk quirked an eyebrow. "Yeah, I guess that didn't stick. But that doesn't matter, he saved us from the Sparrows," The sounds of Luther talking to someone caught their attention, and they all shifted as the one Sparrow returned to consciousness.

She attempted to sit up, groaning at the pain as Luther assisted her. She glanced over at the bodies of her siblings, her eyes widening to the size of saucers. "Sloane, it's all right," Luther whispered as she stood up, clutching onto her arm. She shifted her shocked gaze towards him before bolting up the stairs, much to the Umbrella's surprise. "You've got a live one, Luther!" Diego shouted, grabbing one of his knives from the holster and chasing after them.

Although most of the Sparrows had been trying to kill them, Dusk felt this one was different from the rest. Before they attacked, she looked rather panicked and worried, almost like she didn't want this to happen. But this doesn't make any sense. Why did she come with them if she didn't want things to go this far? Couldn't she have spoken up against it? "Dusk, you and Allison follow Luther, okay?" Viktor pulled the raven out of her thoughts. She quickly nodded, trailing behind her brothers as they ran towards one of the halls.

As she made another turn, she saw Diego heading towards the Oasis and Spa, and as they walked inside, she was stunned to see Luther hanging in the air. "Did you set me up?" Sloane choked out. "No! I would never do that!" Luther gasped. Suddenly, Diego put a knife to her throat, warning her to put him down. She complied, and Luther fell to the ground with a thud. "You can let her go now," Luther coughed.

But Diego shook his head, still holding the knife against the side of Sloane's neck. "Are you kidding me?" "Diego, she's hurt! Let's just help her, and then we'll deal with this!" Dusk spoke up. "She is the enemy!" Number Two insisted. Luther stumbled forward, gritting his teeth as he threatened to bury his brother, but unbeknownst to him, Allison had entered the room as well. "You gonna bury me too, Luther?"

He looked at her stunned before shifting his gaze back to Diego. "Just... let me talk to her. Please..." He begged. It soon became apparent to Dusk that Luther had caught feelings for the light brunette girl. But how? How could he fall in love with her so quickly... ohhh, I see how it is. At that moment, she had a hunch that at some point during his capture by the Sparrows, the two conversed and developed some connection. Though Dusk had yet to fully trust Sloane, part of her secretly wished their relationship wouldn't end with a backstab or breaking of the other's heart.

"Trust me, she's gonna talk. Dusk, hold her back," Allison instructed, her gaze shifting towards her sister. "I-I don't know if I should-" "Just do it!" The Rumor shouted. Exhaling a quiet sigh, Dusk placed Sloane's hands behind her back, holding a grip on her wrists. "It'll be okay," Luther whispered, hoping to at least calm some of the Sparrow's jitters. "I heard a rumor... you're gonna tell me the truth," Luther tried to protest, but Diego shushed him, telling him to let Allison handle it.

"...Where's the briefcase?" Allison continued. Sloane's eyes rolled into the back of her head, whimpering as her head slightly shook from side to side. "Tell me, where is it?" The longer Sloane kept her silence, the more frustrated Allison was becoming. She slowly inched closer to her face, growling the same question for the third time. Finally, Sloane cracked, claiming she didn't know where it was.

"We left it in your house, and it is our only way out of this! WHERE IS IT?!" Allison shouted, making Sloane's eyes roll inside her head again. Her body trembled like mad, along with a small stream of blood running down her nose and onto her lip. Neither the raven nor Luther could bear to watch the torturing anymore. Do something, you idiot! the tiny voice inside her head screamed. "Alli, stop! She can't take it anymore!" she protested, releasing her grip on the Sparrow's wrists. "Good! Then maybe she'll tell us where it really is!"

It wasn't until Luther pulled Allison away that Sloane finally stopped convulsing, sliding onto the ground, gasping for air. "You better ask yourself whose side you're on, bro," Diego sighed, slipping his knife back into its holster. "Would you get out of here? This doesn't even concern you!" Luther snapped. Diego angrily stood up and squared up to the ape-man, they shouted over one another while Dusk made sure Sloane was okay. On the verge of screaming till her lungs gave out, Allison turned around, ready to explode like a grenade.

"ALL OF YOU JUST GET OUT! She doesn't leave your line of sight. Got it?" Luther slowly nodded, leading Sloane out of the showers along with Diego. "Alli, are you okay?" Dusk slowly walked towards her sister, reaching out a hand to touch her shoulder. "Dusk, just go..." she replied coldly. As she walked towards the door, Dusk looked over her shoulder, watching as Allison hunched over one of the sinks muttering to herself.

She climbed down the steps back to the lobby, seeing Diego talking with Stanley. They both stared up at the burnt banner, its ashes spread all over the floor. "Why are you making me clean this? Most of this wasn't even my fault! It was the octogenarian!" Stanley insisted. "You're just mad because you got your ass kicked by a floating cube!" Though Diego held back the urge to strangle or put soap in the young boy's mouth, Dusk could tell her brother's patience was wearing thin.

Out of the corner of her eye, she could see her lover, dressed in an entirely new outfit consisting of long emerald-green pants and a yellow Hawaiian shirt, chuckling at the mess. "Where were you, Klaus? You were conveniently absent when all this shit went down," Diego questioned. "I was worried you relapsed," Dusk nodded, curious to know his whereabouts. "I was talking with dad," Klaus answered.

Wait, what? When did he and the old man become all Frick and Frack? Diego pulled him to the side, away from Stanley's line of hearing, the raven joining the whispered conversation. "Did you ask him about the mother shit?" Diego queried. "Yeah, he said he didn't kill them," Klaus answered. The Kraken squinted, still believing that something suspicious was going on with him. But Klaus insisted that Reginald had nothing to do with it.

"The Sparrows got him all doped up like me! Does it not alarm you that they're drugging their father?" Klaus added. "It's weird. Knowing the Dad we grew up with, the dude could tell something was fishy in a millisecond," Dusk folded her arms across her chest. "Is there anything else?" Diego inquired. Klaus took a moment to walk through memory lane for anything else out of the ordinary, and the flashback to Grace chanting to the bright orange ball. "Oh, you know the luggage room in the basement of the Academy where we used to huff paint?"

"Vaguely," Diego replied. "Then, do you recall this... blinding orb of light?" When Klaus said this, Diego quickly ended the conversation, instantly calling his bluff. Soon, Chet rolled into the lobby with a tiny cleaning cart, handing a long list to Stanley. "What the hell is this?" Stanley looked confused. "Your punishment. And when you're done here, you're gonna clean every room on this list to pay for this shit," Diego explained.

He shifted his gaze towards where Klaus and Dusk were inspecting the cleaning supplies, wrapping an arm around both of their necks. "And... your Uncle Klaus and Aunt Dusk are gonna watch over you," The Kraken added. Klaus began to protest, begging him not to rope him into the situation. But even though Dusk didn't like the idea of sitting around for hours watching a little kid clean rooms as punishment, she figured it'd be better than sitting around the hotel doing nothing.

"Come on, Klausy. We can survive for a few hours," she whispered into his ear. "Why can't you do it, Diego?" the junkie questioned. "Because I have to babysit Luther in case Allison decides to pop off again. And besides, you and him have lots in common," Diego answered. "Like what?" Stanley inquired. "Being a pain in my ass," Okay, Mr. Dickhead. Don't have to be rude to my man. With that final statement, Diego took off, leaving the couple to deal with the punishment.

"Come on, guys. The sooner we get these rooms cleaned, the better," Dusk said, grabbing a mop from the cart and handing it to Klaus.
