~ Chapter Fifty Six ~
Confused. Perplexed. Curious.
Those were just a few words to describe how Dusk and the Umbrella Academy felt seeing Ben after all those years of him being dead. The raven had many questions she wanted to ask but given how awkward everything currently was, it was neither the time nor place.
"Ben... is that really you?" Luther asked, taking a few steps towards him. Ben continued to look confused, wondering how they knew his name. "And who are the weirdos on the balcony?!" Diego shouted. Towering above stood four women, two men, and a glowing cube, all of whom looked intimidating, but not enough to scare the Umbrellas. Reginald explained they were the Sparrows, his "children" as he liked to put it.
It didn't make sense. Reginald rarely considered the Umbrellas his children growing up, so hearing him call the Sparrows that was a little hard to hear. "What do you mean by your children? That's not possible, old man," Five inquired. "Of course it is! I think I'd know, wouldn't I?" Reginald responded as the rest of the Sparrows gathered on the main floor.
"Enough beating around the bush, Father! Who are these people?" the Sparrow with blonde hair and hazel brown eyes growled. "They call themselves The Umbrella Academy, a group of scheming perfidious malcontents who accosted me in the fall of 1963 when I was away on business in Dallas. Be warned, they claim to be my spawn," Way to keep it classy, Reggie.
"Five, what is going on? I thought everything was back to normal!" Allison questioned, darting her eyes between him and the strangers. "I don't know yet, but it's concerning," he answered. The tall man in the center, presumably their leader, questioned the Umbrellas, wondering if what Reginald said was true. And in a feeble attempt to settle things, they tried to water down the harshness of Reginald's explanation.
"We're amateur-fidious at best," Klaus reasoned. "But we are his children. This is our house, we grew up here," Vanya added. One of the other Sparrows' eyebrows quirked up as she said, "I think we would've noticed you if you did," Something about the tone in her voice set off a little bell in Dusk's head. She couldn't make assumptions just yet, but she felt that this girl would be a bit easier to handle than the rest of the bulkier and scarred members.
The glowing cube started chattering, saying something the Umbrellas couldn't understand. But whatever it was, it made the Sparrows chuckle. "You slay me, Chris," Ben muttered, his look of temporary joy turned back to seriousness in seconds. A gasp came from the living room entrance, making them turn to see Grace with a plate of cookies. "Mom?" Diego whispered.
"She's a robot, you pervert!" Another Sparrow scoffed. The Umbrellas began to protest, defending Diego's honor before she slightly lurched backward and spat a black sticky substance on Diego's cheek. "I don't know what circus you escaped from or how you got past our security. But you have 30 seconds to get out of our house," "What if we don't?" Dusk smirked, her and Allison's hands folding across their chests.
"Then... we'll have to settle this the old-fashioned way,"
Just as Luther and the Sparrow leader were about to go head-to-head, Vanya intervened. "We just fought a literal army. This doesn't need to get ugly, so why don't we all calm down and talk about this civilly?" The room went silent until Klaus bent forward and called out to his former ghost buddy. "Ben-er-ino, I gotta say you look so much better alive than you do dead. Except for that haircut!"
"What the hell did you just say?" he squinted. "Stop with all the hostility, Mr. Grumpy Pants..." Klaus took notice of the scar on Ben's left cheek. "...Oh wow, nice scar. Muy macho," Ben hissed through his teeth, telling him to shut up. But being the classic annoyance, Klaus didn't stop poking the bear. "You shut your mouth and just hug your bro--"
Before he could finish his sentence, Ben punched him hard enough to send him toppling over the coffee table and splaying out on the ground. Almost immediately, the flames of anger and vengeance filled Dusk's body from head to toe. "Oh, I'm gonna kick your ass for that, Ben!" She snarled, a fireball immediately igniting in her left hand. "I'd like to see you try, firehead!" he snapped at her.
Within three seconds, Dusk jumped off the coffee table, ready to throw the ball of fire as the other Sparrows and Umbrellas had their own brawls, but Ben was too fast for her, and she fell to the floor. "Too slow!" he taunted as she got up from the ground, her eyes turning more and more blood red. As she was about to throw another one, a whistle came from the other end of the bar.
"Lay off, Ben. I've got this one!" The blonde Sparrow said, throwing a sharp icicle in Dusk's direction. The raven quickly rolled out of the way as it shattered on the ground, and in return, she threw a fireball back at her. Their brawl continued into the entrance hall as more fireballs and icicles were exchanged between the two women, and they soon found themselves backed up near one of the walls. "Time for you to melt, Icy!" Dusk smirked, ready to release her inner demon.
"Really? I think it's time you FREEZE!" Before she could react, Dusk flung backward and was pinned against one of the marble pillars as ice encapsulated her lower body. She struggled to break free as the ice climbed up her chest, but as she concentrated on finding a way out, her demon began to thaw the cold entrapment, melting it into a puddle on the tiled floor.
The Icy Sparrow wasn't going to give up so easily. Using the most amount of energy she possessed, she opened her mouth, spouting shards of ice in Dusk's direction. But luckily, the raven released her fiery breath in the nick of time. While the girls were distracted, one of the other Sparrows lifted the raven off the ground, throwing her to the upstairs level and smacking her right in the center of the wall of paintings. "Art snob, huh?"
Accompanying Dusk on the upper level was Five, who had just knocked a Sparrow to the ground with a single punch. "I'm more like their ringer," He replied to the comment she made about him being the Umbrella's mascot. All of a sudden, he felt a sticky substance land on his face, the same sticky substance she used on Diego earlier.
Everything around him became fuzzy and distorted as the sounds of his siblings fighting were drowned out, and the image of someone climbing up the stairs became clear to him. Red hair, a skinny figure with all black clothes, and a black bo staff clutched in one hand. "V-Victoria?" He questioned. She narrowly squinted at him. "You've got some nerve," She hissed. Five stared at her confused, wondering what she meant by that statement. "I don't understand," Victoria scoffed and rolled her eyes, "You don't understand? And I thought you were supposed to be the smart one," Five began to walk towards her and tried reaching his hand out, but she pulled away.
As Dusk pulled back the last painting that had fallen on top of her, she overheard Five talking and looked over to see him engaged in conversation with the thin air. Is he going crazy or something? She wondered the longer she stared. "Victoria..." Her ears perked up at the mention of that name, and in an instant, she remembered the last time she saw her former friend and how horrible she had been to her.
Best friends don't lie to each other! I will never speak to you again for the rest of my fucking life... A pang of guilt passed through her and she wished she'd given Victoria a chance to explain. The raven was immediately pulled back to reality by loud thudding from the staircase. Faster than lightning, she ran down to help, finding Five in a crumpled heap.
"You okay?" She asked, helping him to his feet. "Yeah... only slightly worse for wear," he replied, his hand touching the bleeding gash on his forehead. "Go find the others and get them out. I'll meet up with you outside," Nodding at his request, Dusk took off, hoping to find the rest of the Umbrellas.

Constantly looking behind him, Klaus dashed upstairs, hoping to find his father and get some answers about why the Sparrows were in their house. As he reached the final door on the right side of the hall, he slammed it shut, pressing his back against the wall in exhaustion and fear. "Which one are you? Scruffy, fatty, fire girl, sad girl? I forgot the rest," Reginald questioned.
"Who are these absolute psychopaths, and why are they in our house?" Klaus panted heavily. "Simple. Once your oafish tribe showed me what a poor job I did with my first selections, I adopted them instead of you!" The monocle responded. "I'm not your father, young man. Not anymore,"
As Reginald was about to offer a tin of biscuits, Dusk rushed in, relieved to see her boyfriend. "Klaus! We have to get out of here!" She ushered. "Hang on hon, I'm really-" Just as he was about to reach for the food, Dusk harshly pulled his arm, and they ran down the hall together. "Why are we going so fast?" He complained. "You want to stick around and get impaled by an icicle-wielding maniac? Cause I don't!" the raven said as they ran out the front door.
