JUNE WAITED PATIENTLY a blanket over her body as she sat with her hands on her knees. She desperately needed Kiara. She needed her touch, her comfort. But, she was no where to be found and all she could do was wait.
June didn't know how to feel. Many emotions coursed through her body at a fast pace that had her whole body trembling. The deck's cool temperature had her holding her knees to her chest, staring at the water infront of her.
June let her thoughts eat her alive, especially what happened with Sarah the previous night. How could she do that? The minute June got her back it was like a snap that took her away in a second. It wasn't fair.
"June?" Kiara called out, standing on top of the boat. She had never stood up faster in her life, her teary eyed face catching the attention of the brunette.
She immediately hopped off the boat, watching Pope get off too before she let June hug her. "Are you okay?" June nodded, but her eyes couldn't help but stare at Pope who was looking at her with a guilty expression. And as she looked between the two she knew.
"No, not really." June denied, pulling out the hug. "What happened?" As she was about to explain, the sound of footsteps on the deck and calling made their heads whip in that direction. "Kie! Pope! Finally." JJ said. "Guys, don't tie up! We're dipping."
"What, why?" Pope questioned, "Where'd you guys go, what happened last night?" John B asked, walking down with Sarah in his arms. "We slept on the break. What's up?"
June looked between the two and Kiara looked at her feet. All she could do was shake her head as she looked at them before speaking, "We gotta get the hell outta here."
"Rafe knows we're here, so we have to leave, like, now." Sarah demanded, hopping into the boat with the assistance of John B.
June was now not sad but pissed. She couldn't even think about the situation because all she wanted to do was scream. Scream about her mom, scream about the gold, and especially Sarah Cameron.
"If Rafe and Barry know, it's only a matter of time." Sarah explained, "Before everyone knows."
"I told you. We should've just gone south, man. Why does no one ever listen?" JJ complained, pacing back and fourth. June sat back in her seat with her arms crossed, looking at the ground. How she wished she could go back in time to the day of the party. She wished she never walked up to the pogues with that weed because she would've been happy. She wouldn't have lost so much.
Mainly herself. Every morning when she looked in the mirror she had no idea who was looking back at her. It was an unfamiliar face that she didn't even recognize anymore.
"I get it! I get it! I understand." John B said, making JJ calm down as he sat next to the girl. "I have an idea." Sarah sighed, "With me back, my dads going to have to choose between me and Rafe. He's gonna choose me." June furrowed her eyes at the girl, "You can't be serious."
"Just please listen. Ward keeps lying to you, Sarah." The blonde girl looked at her feet in defeat, "He's not gonna agree after everything that's happened." Kiara said, "No. I know it sounds crazy,"
"Yeah, it does!" Kiara agreed mockingly, "I know! But he's my dad. And I know him, and he loves me. I'm just asking for two hours." June watched as she got up and all she desperately wanted to do was grab her and tell her everything was gonna be fine.
But, someone beat her to the chase.
June could no longer sit as she got up, departing from the group. Kiara watched her walk away, the girls figure being wrapped with her own arms.
June thought that her thoughts were soon gonna actually kill her. Maybe that day she was suppose to die, she should've died. That would've been the easier route.
The sound of crunching against the ground made her head whip forward, seeing a certain pogue walking to sit next to her. "You okay?" Kiara asked, facing her. "No. Are you?"
"Nope." Kiara sniffled and June looked at her, forcing a tight lipped smile as she leaned her head against her shoulder. Kiara's breathing basically stopped at this, immediately reaching to grab her hand as she leaned her head on hers.
"Did you sleep with him?" June closed her eyes as the question blurred out. "Pope?" Kiara sniffled once more, squeezing her hand, "No. I didn't, June." June was almost confused to hear this, looking up at her, "Why not?" She whimpered slightly.
"Because Pope isn't the one want." June felt a lingering stare above her as she lifted her head up seeing the teary eyed girl and everything seemed to stop. She was almost shocked. Because she finally realized that she was a first choice. She is her first choice.
June didn't waste a second lifting her body up to place a kiss on her lips. It was passionate and long, Kiara relaxing against her lips as she placed her hands on her face, June doing the same. When she finally pulled back the smile on her face was now being trying to covered with tears.
Kiara shook her head, placing another kiss on her lips. Kiara was finally getting the wish of her dreams. It felt like the first time they every kissed. On the beach, sun setting and everything was almost perfect.
Until they were interrupted by the sound of a boat. June pulled from the kiss too see who it was and there was Sarah. John B's Sarah. Kiara looked almost frightened at the sight, scared that June will realize this whole conversation was simply dumb, but when June grabbed her hand and lifted her up, her face gaze softened.
Sarah on the other hand, her body tensed at the sight. She kept switching between John B and June, but everytime she would land on June. "Sarah!" Kiara yelled, waving to her.
"You guys were right. It didn't work." Sarah sighed, and June gave a disappointed look, though she knew this would happen. "Welp, then that settles it, guys. Now, y'all need to load up in the paddy wagon and get the heck out of Dodge right now." JJ demanded.
"Right, you'll need supplies and you'll have to split as soon as possible." Pope said. "Guys I think it's too late."
June looked up at the words, seeing many boats and distant sirens. "Oh my god." She groaned, looking at John B with fear. "They followed you here?"
"Run! Go!" June immediately said, running next to Kiara. She kept looking behind her, making sure the limping Sarah and John B were following, "June, go!" Kiara demanded, grabbing her wrist as they sprinted.
"Sarah, you good?" Karah yelped out, looking behind her as they ran through the tall grass. "Yeah." She whimpered. Her scared voice made her let out a short sigh, trying to also stay focused.
June's feet hit against the water, her hand no longer attached to Kie's. Grunting was heard amongst the group, even whimpers on Sarah's behalf.
Seeing as there was no other place to go, they hid behind a tree, all trying to desperately catch their breaths. "We're trapped. They surrounded us. What do we do?" Pope questioned, panic laced in his voice. "There's no way out of this, we're making a stand."
"That's not gonna help anything." June shook her head, before feeling the touch on her arm. It was Sarah who stared at their breathlessly. June simply tightened her jaw, leaning back against the tree in silence.
She closed her eyes shut as she imagined all the things that could go horribly wrong in this moment. June couldn't help but look at the Routledge boy whom she grew up with. This might've been one of the last times they were eye to eye in a room.
"Don't move!" The officers shouted.
June watched as JJ pulled out his gun, and loading it. She was preparing herself to duck but when John B stepped infront of him with sad eyes, she knew.
As they walked shamelessly away from the tree, with their hands above their head, fear guarded their hearts. What was to come? The lingering question was heart wrenching at every moment in time.
"Hands up, John B." The officers screamed, pointing the gun straight at the boy. "Listen, Shoupe, I wanna testify." He pleaded, "It's about time. Get down. Do not move a muscle." June cried and cried as she watched her friend be pulled to ground.
But as soon as a punch was thrown to his face, she pleaded, "JB!" She shouted, her voice echoing as the rest of them. Even more tears streamed down her face as she saw her father jump out the car.
"June, keep your hands up, sweetheart!" He yelled, rushing towards the fight, "Dad, do something!" She cried, falling back on the tree. "Keep your hands up!" The officers gun was pointed at June and all she saw was Rafe. His devious smile whilst he saw the blood trickling down her stomach was a horrific sight. So was this one right in front of her.
"It wasn't him! It wasn't him!" She cried, about to walk towards the scene before her father was scene infront of her, "It's okay, keep your hands up!" He demanded, only his elbow infront of her.
"Their gonna hurt him!" She sobbed, and he couldn't do anything to help his babygirl. It killed him as he watched tears fall down her cheek. He couldn't hold her, tell her that her friend would be just fine because that would be a lie. "JJ!" June screamed, seeing him now being held at gun point.
June almost calmed down as John B was lifted off the ground but that was soon a coverup for worse. "This is for Peterkin."
Though, those were the right words said to the wrong person, and the pogues couldn't do anything to prove it.
