chapter five.

UNCOMFORTABLE SITUATIONS
october 14th

( what will it mean when it's only you and me in the end of the world )

The room was blanketed in darkness. Soft music filled the room with ambiance, it was not too loud or too soft; just loud enough for Zelda to be left with her thoughts.

The light from her phone made her headache worse, so she was left lying straight on her back. Her eyes were trained on her ceiling, where glow in the dark stars were placed days before.

She may be a bit hungover from the night before.

It had been a very awkward four hours. The people who attempted to make her feel welcomed were Lydia, Scott, and Mason. Liam would try but she began to feel her random comments made him angry.

Malia had semi warmed up to her, she would not sneer at her anytime she spoke. Though, she had drunk the same amount as malia yet she seemed perfectly fine.

Part of Zelda wished they all felt as shitty as she felt at the moment, due to the amount of uncomfortable glaring she gained from some of them.

Zelda knew it was around lunch time, her stomach grumbled with unease and hunger. Cass had left to work hours earlier, leaving her alone with no car and no food.

That bitch.

Her mind had wandered towards Scott, but she was still upset from last night. Then her mind moved to Lydia who had forcefully taken her phone last night to put her number in, but that's too much energy for the moment.

And that's what led her to this point.

Her thumb was hovering above the screen, her eyes were barely visible from how hard she was squinting. She was stuck on how to start the conversation or how to ask if he wanted to get food.

She released a sigh before pressing down on the cal button, laying back down with the phone pressed between the pillow and her cheek.

It barely rang twice before he answered, "Hey, who is this?" He questioned, his phone semi muffled as he spoke into the phone.

"Uh hi. It's Zelda? This is Derren, right?" She confirmed, eyes closing tightly in attempts to chase away the pounding in her head caused from her speaking.

She could hear his not so quiet, victorious 'yes'. "I was starting to think you were going to ignore me, then i would've felt stupid so." He rambled on, quickly clearing his throat before continuing.

"So uh, why are you calling?" Derren asked.

Zelda inhaled softly, pressing down against the bed as she sat up. "Well I was wondering if you wanted to get some food? I don't really know where to eat in this town yet." She explained with a hint of awkwardness. When he had not responded, she quickly added- " I can pay." Praying it would be a selling point.

He must've gotten over his shock because he quickly released a string of "no's". "I had to take a second to get over the shock of you calling and then wanting to hang out. I didn't expect you to actually do it." He replied honestly.

Derren wasn't silent for even a minute before he said, "Either way, Link would hate me if I made Princess Zelda pay."

Giggles began to bubble out from her mouth, her hand slapping against her lips in an attempt to contain the laughter.

Her head fell forward, landing on her knee as her shoulders shook from the intensity of her laughs.

"Oh my god, that... that shouldn't have been as funny as it was." She said, struggling to get words out past her giggle like breathes.

She could hear him muffling his own laughs, clearing his throat almost immediately after she toned down.

"I'm hilarious, Zelda. You are going to have to get used to it." He said with pride blanketing his tone.

Zelda rolled her eyes in response, quite happy he couldn't see her expressions. The sound of an engine starting knocked Zelda out of her giggly trance, suddenly remembering the topic of conversation.

"Doomberry, winstion, or delum?" He questioned, a muffled sound of a door closing in the background.

"Delum, uhm 8349. It's like the first house on the right en- wait, how did you know the street?" She wondered, her eyes narrowing.

She could hear him falter for a moment, "I used to- I mean.. I know Scott lives on Doomberry so I guessed around there." He murmured with uncertainty.

That gut feeling had returned, one that only meant she was being lied to once again. Her arm curled around her stomach, feeling her joyful mood lessen. She sighed softly, "Makes sense, you guys probably hung out due to lacrosse." Zelda excused.

He released a relieved sigh, "I'll be there in like fifteen minutes, is that okay?"

Zelda cringed softly as her gaze fell to her clothes, forcefully sliding off her bed. "Yeah, I'll just meet you outside." She confirmed.

"M'kay good! See you then, Zel."

Just before he could hang up, she cut him off. "Thanks! I mean, thank you." She murmured, slightly shaking her head at her outburst.

Derren let out a small laugh in return, "You don't have to thank me, I'll see you soon." He excused, three beeps following his words.

She dropped her phone down on her bed with a short exhale, groaning as she pushed herself out of bed and towards the boxes of clothes that were still packed away.

"Now, what is he hiding?" She questioned out loud, suddenly stuck in her thoughts on Scott's group.

"What are they hiding?"

...

The car ride over to the diner wasn't exactly awkward, it was more- tense per say. Derren cracked a couple of jokes, she would laugh in return. She was desperately trying not to ask the obvious question, he seemed to be avoiding asking her something in return.

They were now sitting down in a booth, across from each other. His eyes were narrowed in annoyance, glaring at her with defiance. HIs fingers were interlocked, he was leaning forward to create intimidation.

Zelda suppressed a smile, though an amused expression was on her face. "Is something wrong, Derren?" She questioned innocently. Her hands moving to cup her chin, blinking at him expectantly.

His lips turned down into a frown, shaking his head while raising one shoulder. "Oh you know- someone tricked me into looking away then paid for our food after we bought a lot." He said, sounding sarcastic. "But no, everythings perfectly fine."

She snickered, a hand moving to cup her mouth. "Think of it as a thank you for driving me and telling me Scott's name." She offered playfully, partially just wanting him to stop glaring her down like she hurt his dog.

Derren only shrugged, angrily grabbing his coke; drinking it with a scowl on his face. "I said I'd pay." He mumbled, giving her one last glance before the scowl dissipated.

"I still can't believe you got on a bike with someone you didn't even know the name of." He said in disbelief.

Zelda shrugged sheepishly, "He seemed trustworthy." She said, giving a slight smile.

Seemed.

He snickered softly, "I'm guessing they didn't trust you as much." He inquired, raising his brow as he gave her a knowing glance.

She couldn't resist rolling her eyes, features twisting into a grimace. "Not particularly. Stiles looked at me like I killed his dog or something." Zelda said with disgust.

Derren faltered for a moment, making her stomach twist with slight guilt. She knew they weren't exactly the best of friends.

"Stiles is an asshole, he doesn't trust anyone." He confirmed, glancing at the window beside them.

His hand raising to point in the direction of a jeep, "Especially since he followed us here. I'm guessing he finds you very untrustworthy." He grumbled, once again sipping away at his coke angrily.

Her hand snapped to the side, just in time to see two heads duck away from being seen.

Oh, they had to be joking.

Anger began to boil inside of her, her hand clenching by her side as she could see two figures trying to shuffle out of view.

"Who's the other person?" She questioned, her voice shaking as she forced the words out. Her frustration was clear in her tone, slight confusion shining on her features.

He leant forward, looking for a good angle to see the two. Brow raising as his lips formed into a small frown, "I think it's Malia." He guessed, shoulding raising and falling in a lazy shrug.

Zelda's lips parted, nerves coiling in her stomach at the thought of seeing her once again.

She cleared her throat, shaking away the sudden rush of feelings. "Do you think they will just leave since we have seen them?" She questioned, eyes glued to the two figures who finally sat up normally.

Her question was answered when Stiles practically fell out of the car, whereas Malia seemed hesitant to step out.

"Or they will just come inside." She murmured, glancing over to see Derren sitting more tense than he was before. "We can just go, you know. We can eat something at my house." Zelda offered, flashing him an encouraging smile.

His discomfort was obvious as his eyes trailed after the two, mostly trained on Stiles. "No, it's fine. He would just follow us back there too." He said with a dismissive tone, finally returning his gaze to hers.

"Just answer every question with a question and he'll eventually give up." He advised, leaning back against the booth with a sour expression.

She glanced behind her, seeing the two enter- talking amongst each other. Stiles was practically dragging Malia along, forcing her to walk and stand in front of their table.

"Stiles." She spoke, her lips formed into a straight line. Her eyes were glued to his face, subtly glaring him down.

He squirmed in his spot, brows furrowed as his own eyes were narrowed down at her. "Zelda." His eyes flickered to the boy across from her, visibly tensing up for a moment. "Derren."

Malia rose her brow, watching everyone with a confused gaze. "Are we all just announcing our names to each other?" She questioned, "If so, Malia."

Zelda's angered gaze faltered for a moment. Blue irises flickering over to the taller girls, pink blossoming on her cheeks.

Oh god, not this feeling again.

They seemed locked into each other's gaze, neither breaking the contact. Malia's eyes were intense to look into, it was just as intimidating as the coyote's eyes. Zelda felt herself being pulled in, unable to focus on anything else except for her eyes.

Tense silence filled the surrounding air, only their breathing could be heard in the moment. Until an enthusiastic voice rang out, "Since we are all here. We'll just join you!" Which tore Zelda's gaze away, frowning at the bright grin on Stiles' features.

Derren and Zelda immediately protested with a 'No' and a 'You really don't have to', but died down when Stiles pushed Malia into the booth next to Derren. Sliding next to Zelda, his shoulder plastered against hers.

She huffs out of frustration, meeting Derrens gaze as he shakes his head. She shuffled closer to the window, casting a side eye to the boy next to her.

"Why do you have to be so annoying?" Derren questioned Stiles, lips twisting into a sarcastic smirk.

Stiles's elbow rested against the table, his chin cupped into the palm of his hand. "I'm not being annoying." He simply said, giving Malia a single wink before twisting his gaze to Zelda's. The corners of his lips quirking into a friendly smile. "So, how has the move been? Your first ever couple of days here?" He asked, curiosity shown throughout his eyes.

Her features contorted into one of distaste, annoyance clear as her jaw clenched. "It's been fine except for most of the people here." She retorted, eyes narrowing as she glanced towards the other girl; who was only staring at Stiles with clear confusion.

His gaze faltered for a moment, the response stumping him for only a moment. "How did you get Scott to be your personal driver?" Sparing a glance at the two sitting across from them.

Zelda's head lolled to the side, her eyes catching Derrens while he withheld a chuckle at her expression. She rolled her shoulders back, resting against the booth with her arms crossed loosely over her chest. "I didn't get him to do anything. He kept offering and I didn't feel like walking for six miles." Zelda explained with a dry tone.

Malia made a small noise at that, causing Stiles to throw a glance at Derren; who looked uneasy about the whole situation, giving a small shake of his head to Stiles.

This had to be the weirdest friend group she has ever met.

Zelda glanced down, her arms tightening around her middle in search of comfort. His curiosity seemed to pause for a moment, giving her a breath of fresh air. She just wanted to get some lunch with a friend and forget the night before.

She jumped when a shoe knocked against her ankle in a comforting manner, still leaving her body tense after. Her eyes flickered upwards, catching Malia glance away at the last second; the shoe sliding away from her skin.

A plate was placed down in front of her, another across from her. "Oh, more joined. Can I get you anything?" Pulling out her notepad with an overly sweet smile.

"No, it's oka-" Stiles was cut off when the other girl shot her foot out and kicked him. "I'll have a burger with sprite." Malia ordered, not bothering to give any nice words with it.

Zelda's brow arched, feeling slightly amused at how she demanded the food. Though the waitress only huffed softly and turned towards Zelda, "Do I put this on your card?" She questioned.

The girl's gaze snapped to Zelda's, a low growl building in her throat. Zelda glanced away, giving a small smile and a nod. Eyes following the lady as she began to walk away. "You're welcome." She murmured, eyes falling towards her food.

She heard nothing but sounds of aggravated breathing from beside her, almost thankful that he finally decided to keep his mouth shut. That was until his elbow slipped from the table and his hand hit it with a gentle bang, "Why is it only you and your sister?" He questioned, the judgment clear in his voice.

The fork in her hand clinked against the plate as she angrily angled her body towards Stiles. "What type of question is that?" She questioned sharply. Brows knitted together when he parted his lips and looked at Malia with alarm.

"I just... I was just curious." He worded the sentence carefully, caution gleaming in his golden brown eyes. He discreetly shuffled towards the edge, his leg partially out of the booth; only moving more when Zelda rose her brow.

Before Zelda could answer, the waitress had returned with Malia's meal.

"Can we just get these in boxes?" Derren asked her, gesturing to his own and Zelda's. She responded with a quiet 'Yes' and took away their plates. Practically sprinting away from the tension that was building at the table.

Zelda released a slow exhale, her fingers curling into a fist as she forced herself to calm down. "My parents died, so obviously I have to live with someone." She whispered in a low voice, the arm she had wrapped around her center- tightened painfully.

She could feel each of their eyes on her, it made her shift uncomfortably in her spot. That same shoe tapped lightly against her ankle, causing her eyes to flicker subtly towards Malia. Resisting the urge to laugh when she saw a burger being forced past her lips.

"How did they di-" A groan of discomfort passed his lips as Derren kicked his knee from under the table. "What the hell, Der-Derren?" He corrected, casting another glance at Malia who wasn't even watching the interaction.

"You never know when to stop." He grumbled, nudging Malia with his shoulder, causing her head to snap up with a glare in his direction. "I need to get out." She rolled her eyes but gently put down her burger and slid out of the booth, her shoe leaving Zelda's ankle cold once again.

Malia casted a glance at Zelda, an unreadable expression in her eyes.

Zelda watched the scene with a confused gleam in her own, stomach twirling with an unknown feeling. "Move, Stiles... Please." Adding the plea with a faux closed lip smile.

His lips parted as his hand rose to point in her direction, but Derrens hand caught his wrist and tugged him out of the booth. "I just have a few questions left!" He protested hysterically, shoving Derren away from his arm.

She quickly slid out of the booth, her arms slipping through her jacket. She gulped as her vision went black with white dots, her hand falling against the table to gain her footing.

When her vision cleared; Derren was shoving the box of food into her hands, shooting Stiles one last glare before turning on his heel to walk away.

Zelda's eyes widened as she hurriedly moved to start after him, faltering when Malia's shoulder brushed hers; her wrist knocking against her own. She released a shaky exhale before taking another step to walk away. "Don't follow me around all day, Stiles!" She yelled as she opened the door, not bothering to look at him before leaving.

...

Derren had dropped her at home, giving her the option that he could keep her company. Yet she turned him down and dragged herself up the path to her house. She was grateful that he automatically drove away, giving her the freedom to sit on her curb with her head in her hands.

She felt mentally and physically drained, the reminder of her parents always sent her around on a loop. Being questioned about herself in general wasn't a subject she loved to speak about.

There was this hidden feeling, one she kept telling herself to forget. They were all hiding something, even Derren who made it seem like he wasn't close to them at all. Some were too suspicious of her, while some welcomed her cause of Scott.

Werewolf, Flashed through her memory once again. A gentle reminder of the conversation she overheard. It sent shivers down her spine just thinking such a thing was possible.

Her hand shifted to her hair, glancing to the right of her. Her teeth bit at her lower lip, considering if she would have enough time to leave and return before Cass came home. She also ran the risk of bumping into Scott and deal with his own version of questioning.

She turned to leave the food in the shade on her porch, silently praying that Scott would be out with his friends.

Zelda turned down the sidewalk, her eyes scanning the area around her as she hurriedly walked down the concrete. She felt a cold sweat wash over her the faster she walked, feeling light headed from lack of food and the headache that only pounded harder.

She stopped when she met the edge of the woods, her eyes fluttering to a close as she struggled to catch her breath. Her eyes flickered behind her, feeling as if a pair of eyes were on her.

She cleared her throat as she turned her body back to the woods, "I better not meet any other of his friends again." She murmured, glancing behind her once more before using her arm to push away some branches to walk in.

...

Her fingers were cramping from the amount of use, her eyes slightly burning from staring at the bright screen. Her headache had only gotten worse, though her worry had lessened from her research... Well to an extent, it got worse in a way.

She had gone on a spree of learning each and every thing that had happened in beacon hills in the past couple of years. Most were mysterious animal attacks or revenge plans that had happened now; what caught her interest was two certain articles.

One was from three years ago, talking about five students who had gotten stuck in the highschool as a Derek Hale was trying to murder them. Another was about the Hale fire from years and years ago.

She couldn't understand how Stiles compared what happened to her parents to what happened to his family, how he even knew what happened to her family.

Her head fell back gently against the tree she had leant up against, eyes falling closed as she moved to close her computer. She could feel her computer slowly slip from her lap, her hands becoming numb as sleep began to take over her body.

A soft patter of feet came from in front of her, which she barely acknowledged; deciding it was only in her head. Something wet lapped at her wrist; causing Zelda's eyes to snap open with alert.

She let out a gasp as her eyes connected with the pure blue of the coyotes. She pushed her back painfully into the tree, legs tensing where the coyote was between them. It stared at her with an unreadable expression, that same intimidating gleam shining through their eyes.

It released an agitated huff, leaning down to nudge at the wrist it had licked. Lapping at it once again until Zelda shakingly offered her wrist up. Her eyes wide with fear, body visibly shaking.

It seemed pleased with her gesture, tilting its head so her hand was resting on its head. Her brows furrowed, "What?" She murmured breathlessly. Her head hit the bark with a thump when its eyes flashed towards her, releasing a small growl when her hand started to creep away.

Her fingers hesitantly burrowed into its fur, taking it as a good sign when it rumbled happily and leant into her touch. She slowly began to scratch its head, being careful to not irritate the coyote.

"What is happening right now?" Zelda mumbled, fear aching in her chest as it began to move closer to her; blue eyes never leaving her own.

It was almost identical to the diner with Malia, its gaze was just as captivating; but in the wrong ways. She was scared it would pounce at her again if she looked away or stopped her actions. The coyote's body was practically resting against her leg at this point, rumbling happily the more she scratched.

Until it randomly stood up, body shifting away from Zelda to growl towards the right of them.

Zelda's hand shakily falls down to her lap, slowly bringing her legs to press against her chest. Her eyes flickered to the area it was facing, attempting to see from her position. She held her breath as it turned back towards her, the growling never ceasing even when it neared close.

Its head ducked down to nuzzle her wrist one last time before taking off in the opposite direction from where it was growling.

Her lips parted as harsh exhales were finally able to be released. Her eyes snapped towards the area, hearing a branch break under someone or something's foot. She hissed when her back detached from the tree, angling her body to pick up her laptop, shoving it into her bag.

Zelda used the tree branch to pull herself up, ignoring the glistening substance on her wrist and hand. She jumped when she could finally hear the steps the coyote must have heard.

She heard a voice ring out, automatically putting herself behind a tree; hoping they wouldn't see her.

Her brows furrowed when a familiar voice spoke, "Stiles said she got really defensive about it." Scott said, his tone seeming sad- almost as if he was in thought.

"It makes sense. Stiles isn't the most welcoming person, he could have at least started with easy questions." Zelda's head turned the opposite direction, recognizing that voice from the other day.

Scott released a long exhale, seeming to stop his steps. "Not everyone we meet is bad. You met her, you know what I mean." He said. She could practically see his hopeful expression.

Why was it that every conversation she was mentioned in, it was Scott defending her?

"You can never be too careful, Scott." He responded, his own steps stopping. "She was out here again." Came only seconds later.

Zelda froze against the tree, her hand coming to cup her mouth.

"Yeah, so was... She went that way." Hurried steps followed after, whereas the other only took a couple steps forward.

She stayed flat against the tree, her gaze frozen straight ahead; listening out for more steps.

"You left your phone." The unknown man called out, sounding unbelievingly amused; he seemed to wait for only a few moments before taking off after Scott.

Zelda slowly peaked out from behind the tree, cheeks flaming with an embarrassed blush. She took a few steps forward till she leant down to retrieve her phone.

Her gaze moved to where they had run off to, "She?" Zelda murmured under her breath.

The coyote was a she.
