Charlotte joins jo in alex's office, where the former admits her fear of not knowing her genes when it comes to her future kids, "i don't know anything about my biological parents medical history. i've had to learn to live with that, but i don't want to not know when it comes to our kids." jo explains to alex. "i don't want to meet my family, so i'm going to have my genonome examined." the surgeon holds up a dna test. "i'm gonna spit in a tube."

"i don't know anything about my birth parents, either. all i know is i was left on my aunts porch when i was two weeks old. i'd like to have mine tested, too." charlotte speaks up.

jo smiles at the teen. "okay. we'll do it together."

"Maggie?" charlotte knocks urgently on the door of on call room number three. "maggie!"

a disheveled maggie pierce opens the door, looking like she had just been woken up, "charlie? what are you doing here?"

charlotte ignores the valid question, lightly shoving the attending aside and stepping into the
small room. "avery!" she hisses, shaking awake the plastic surgeon fast asleep on the bottom bunk.

"charlie?" jackson avery questions, clearly disoriented.

"shoo."

"uh, no. i'm sleeping."

"fine then. if you want to hear all about my piping hot, dramatic, delusional teen girl gossip be my guest."

avery shoots off the bed, grabs his pager, and is out the door before charlotte can even begin to
elaborate. maggie can't help but laugh. she pushes herself up to a sitting position, leaning against the wall. "so... piping hot gossip?"

charlotte throws up her shoulders. "nope."

"what? but you just—" maggie stitches her eyebrows together in confusion.

"i had to get him out somehow." she shrugs, sinking beside maggie on the bed. "look: you're adopted."

pierce tilts her head to one side. "yeah, i've heard that."

"sorry, sorry." charlotte apologizes rapidly. "i was just wondering... did you ever get your dna tested?"

"have you met me? i battered myself with tests. i wanted to know everything."

charlotte pulls a manila folder out from behind her back and pulls it open, revealing documents that contain her dna results. "i just got my results back. i don't wanna open them alone, but i can't open them with alex or jo and have to see their faces if they discover i'm a genetic lemon."

"i'm your girl." maggie assures, taking the folder from charlotte and setting on her lap. "i know this can be scary, but i promise, whatever we find—"

"maggie, i appreciate your help, but please—skip the heartfelt blah blah blah."

cracking a smile the surgeon slides the results out from the folder. "alright, you ready?"

"mhm," the teen nods anxiously.

maggie lets out a breath. "alzheimer's, no." she looks at charlotte as she reads the results.

"okay..."

"huntingtons, no. parkinson's, no. congrats, you won the genetic lottery." pierce finishes, handing the paper over to charlotte.

"it says here i'm mostly british!" the teen exclaims in surprise upon scanning over the results herself.

"congrats! i got a patient." maggie says, grabbing her pager from the bunk and exiting the room.

charlotte continues to read her results. "you are comparing with martha tomlinson." she reads off. "it's probable that martha tomlinson is your first cousin. i have a cousin."

she leaves the on call room, nearly stumbling backwards at the sight of intern casey creepily waiting on the other side of the door. "want me to find her?"

"god!" charlie jumps back, hand clutching her chest. "what is wrong with you?"

undeterred, casey repeats his question. "do you want me to find your cousin?"

"uh, how would you do that?"

"start with a web search, then facebook, instagram. then an exhaustive search of various consumer databases—"

charlotte cuts him off, shutting the door behind her and starting down the hallway. "no! no, no, no i don't want that. that's—that's creepy! that's stalking. you're a stalker."

casey shrugs. "it's all legal."

"no." charlotte crosses her arms. casey gives her a look before turning in the other direction. charlie glances back at her results briefly before rushing after casey. "okay, but if you could find her, could you also find out who she's related to? could you find her mother or—"

now casey interrupts the teen. "or your mother?" he guesses, typing furiously on his tablet.

"no!" charlotte exclaims once again. "i didn't say do it." she narrows her eyes at the intern, who shrugs apologetically.

Charlotte approaches jackson in the lobby as he watches maggie's interview about her parentage. "hey, have you seen maggie?" he stays silent, instead continuing to quietly watch maggie in awe. charlotte follows his gaze, gasping when she sees the cardiothoracic surgeon being interviewed and recorded. "is that the woman from good morning seattle?"

"yeah. maggie's very fancy now-" jackson replies before being immediately shushed by a cameraman.

"who pissed in his cheer-" charlotte begins. avery puts an arm out and pulls the teen behind him before she can continue. after watching the interview for a moment, charlie suddenly gasps. "oh my god."

"what?" jackson asks.

charlotte gestures towards maggie. "that's a sign! i came here to ask her if i should find my birth mother and that—that is a sign."

jackson has a certain look on his face which charlotte is quick to read. "what?"

"uh, nothing."

"what?" charlotte presses.

jackson looks down at the girl. "i connected with my father a while back and it was not the best idea. didn't alleviate any of my pain, just created more. so unless there's some kind of big answer that you're looking for you might just wanna let it go."

charlotte stares back. "you took my sign down." she deadpans, turning and walking away.

Charlotte approaches casey in the cafeteria. "can you really find my mother?"

the second year nods. "yes. do you really want me to?" the teenager hesitates for a brief moment before nodding. "good, cause i couldn't help myself." casey turns his laptop around to face charlotte, showing her an image of her birth mom. "she lives in new york. her name is susan." charlotte stares at the computer screen, mouth agape. an older version of herself stares back.
