22.5 | The truth untold

"What are you doing?" Minhee asks, walking inside her office. Dahyun is sitting on her swivel chair with her eyes focused on Minhee's desktop.

"Ahh, I had something important to do."

"Why is that important thing being done on my computer?" Minhee says, walking towards her desk. She stands behind Dahyun, looking over at her screen and immediately whines. "Hey!"

"You have to endure this kind of thing after what you've done yesterday."

Minhee stomps her foot, giving a pointed look at the screen. The wallpaper is now a photo of her and Jeongguk from yesterday's cruise dinner, and Dahyun, she is making hearts on either side of the picture with the folder icons. Not funny.

"Does it have to be something like that?"

"Yes, this way you'll remember you have a boyfriend."

"I see the office is running well."

Dahyun almost falls off the chair when she hears the door click open and reveals Mrs Yoon. Minhee presses her lips together before walking towards the couch and taking a seat across where her mother has seated herself.

"Would you like some coffee, Ma'am?"

Mrs Yoon looks at Dahyun sharply before saying, "Do you think I have put you in that job to make coffee?"

Minhee balls her fists at that. Her mother never changes.

"I told you to go with her everywhere, and you left her alone with some newbie."

"Why are you getting mad at her when I am the one who caused trouble?"

"Do you know what you did yesterday?" Mrs Yoon glares at her daughter, "You created a scene at the dinner, dragged Jeongguk into it as well. Your dad is very disappointed Minhee."

"When is he not?" Minhee says, leaning back on the couch.

"That's because you don't think about the consequences of your actions!"

Minhee heaves a sigh. She is sure her mother's voice can be heard outside her office, it doesn't help the existing reputation she has."Mom, let's talk later..."

"Later, when?" Mrs Yoon says, tone shrill. "You don't come home for days, you don't talk to us on phone and then you create such a mess. What do you want us to do? Sit and see you ruin yourself and the company."

Minhee digs her nails in the leather skin of the couch, breathing deeply to keep her calm.

"Think before you even breathe Minhee. We married you to Jeongguk for a reason, can't you just sit back and do your job without making a mess out of every situation!"

Mrs Yoon breathes, nostrils flaring. She stands up, fixes her dress and takes the sunglasses resting in the collar of her dress, wearing them. Without saying a word more, she walks out of the room.

Silence.

There's an elephant in the room, and Minhee can't bring herself to address it. Her eyes have been closed the minute her mother stood up to walk away, too afraid to open and see things getting out of her hand.

"You're married." Dahyun breaks the silence. "To Jeongguk."

Minhee bites her bottom lip, opening her eyes. Her head hangs low, hair falling down her shoulders to cover the side of her face. She nods.

"I see. Congratulations."

Minhee hates how monotonous it sounds. She hates how distant Dahyun feels. She hates how she couldn't bring herself to trust Dahyun enough to let her know beforehand. She hates herself because she couldn't give Dahyun a chance to be the bridesmaid at her wedding.

It's all her fault, she believes.

"Look— Dahyun. I really wanted..." when Minhee turns around, her heart drops. Dahyun has tears flowing down her cheeks, fists clenched by her side and head hanging low.

Oh what have I done?

Minhee stands up to approach her friend when Dahyun looks up, right into her eyes. Those red eyes and quivering lips, Minhee knows they will haunt her. She has hurt a friend, and doesn't know how to make things better.

"The PR team has taken down defaming articles from yesterday. The planning team has worked through the new launch, you'll receive a report by the evening."

"Dahyun—"

But before Minhee could even speak further, Dahyun is already walking out of the room.

Minhee's head throbs with pain, she doesn't understand what is happening in her life. What is happening and why? She is just trying to survive in this cruel world and prove how deserving she is of everything she has.

Because she has dreams and she has to fight to reach them.

Sacrifice is a part of it, just like hard work.

She knows.

But there's a lingering thought in her mind,

How much will I have to sacrifice until I have nothing to offer?

...

The morning has been pretty eventful for Jeongguk.

Articles from last night surfaced and vanished like the morning fog and he can't care about it anymore.

"Here you go, Ms Yoon."

Jeongguk looks up at Secretary Kim with raised eyebrows, taking the file from him. The latter tilts his head, brings his hands in front of him to clasp them together and says, "Ah, my bad. You've been asking me to look at Wings' finances all this week, I almost thought I would work for her."

"Very funny, Secretary Kim."

"Been told before."

Jeongguk scoffs, keeping the file aside and picks up another one on his desk.

"I know I am not in a place to say this—"

"You are." Jeongguk interrupts. "You can say anything to me, you know it."

The older man stays silent for a few moments, Jeongguk sees something flash in his eyes before he is back to his usual self again. "Then let me put it this way. If you are trying to dig up something that is being hidden, be careful about it. Once you know things, you automatically become part of it, willing or unwilling."

Jeongguk smiles, going back to his work, "You always know a little too much, don't you?"

"Been told before."

"Get out."

When Secretary Kim walks out, Jeongguk leans back on his chair, looking out of his window at the building that even reflects the clouds and crosses a leg over the other.

"Let's see Yoon Minhee, what do those glass walls hide?"
