TWO HALVES OF THE SAME WHOLE . . .
— i tried my best not to make this angst
Mitsuba was never really one to take interest in someone. He preferred to keep himself independent, a friend or two, maybe, but no one else more.
Then Kou came barreling back into his undead life like it's nobody business, saying words that confused Mitsuba's mind, promised Mitsuba they would stay together forever, and not to mention risked his life without thinking because he thought, that way, they would be the same.
It baffled Mitsuba, really. Kou is an enigma he can never understand no matter how hard he tried ( and he tried ).
Mitsuba looked up to Kou.
The way he shines brighter than the sun, than any scorching flame, or any bright light, the way he smiles so pure that it almost makes people cry, the way he's so positive that it's like any negative thoughts can't even touch him—Kou is a golden child that everyone loves to befriend.
While Mitsuba is the opposite. He tries too hard to fit in that he doesn't even stand out anymore, he's just a plain boy desperate for a personality that it's pathetic. And now that Mitsuba's dead, he tried everything just so he can live normally ( which is absurd because he's a ghost, and he will never live normally ). Kou has it easy, Mitsuba thought.
"How do you do that?" Mitsuba had asked Kou once, watching as Kou's smile dropped a notch in confusion. The pink-haired boy narrowed his eyes on his, trying to read him, to no avail.
Kou tilted his head. "Do what?"
Mitsuba gestured at his grin with a grimace, his well-kept nails averting Kou's attention to his own face. "That. Act so happy. It makes my head hurt." It really didn't, but somehow, it pissed him off.
Kou playfully rolled his eyes. "You're one to talk. You're a happy-go-lucky person, too, Mitsuba. An annoying happy-go-lucky person."
Mitsuba scowled for a moment before turning away. "I'm not always happy. There are times where I am too sad to be even Mitsuba. I'm sure you know how that went." Mitsuba wore an unreadable glint in his eyes that made Kou huff.
"So am I," Kou answered almost immediately. "So am I, you know. I'm not always happy and cheerful. The moment when Tsukasa messed with you when things were going so well I was so mad—"
Anger boiled in the pit of his stomach, seeing nothing but red when Tsukasa grinned at him. Kou wanted to scream, so, so loud that everyone will hear, and maybe ( just maybe ) they can help him out. Kou wanted to cry, he wanted to bury his face and hear Mitsuba's heartbeat ( what a stupid wish—he should've accepted it a long time ago that one's a person's dead, nothing can change that ).
"—the moment where I couldn't understand anything that you said because I am a human, and you're a ghost—remembering that made me sad—"
Mitsuba stared up at Kou, his eyes filled with surprise and confusion at his words. Stay together forever? That's stupid. You're saying that the only way you two can be happy is when you're both dead. Kou didn't want to tell anyone how painful it was to see Mitsuba hurt, not just physically.
Maybe Kou will never really understand Mitsuba. Maybe they never really were meant to be back together again
"But, I guess there times," Kou told him with a distant, fond smile, as if he remembered something so far away from his reach; he can never experience it again. "That time when we were in Shjima-san's boundary. And where everything was normal. You looked so happy, too. That was one of the best moments in my life."
Mitsuba looked away and didn't say anything. Kou knew what was wrong in a split second. It's not like Mitsuba is easy to read, but they've been together for so long that Kou knows how Mitsuba is feeling like it's his own.
"Though, you know, even small moments like this, makes me so happy, too. We don't need to pretend like everything's easy."
"That's odd," Mitsuba said, unable to keep himself from smiling, "why is it that most of your memorable moments have me, huh?"
Kou sputtered and hid his face by hiding in his arms as he crouched down on the ledge. "Isn't it obvious already? You're one of the most important people in my life." Kou's blush became deeper when he didn't hear anything from Mitsuba, but when he discreetly glanced at the boy, his eyes were glossy, and his lip was quivering. "Are you oka—"
Mitsuba waved him off. "I'm fine," he snapped, but the waver in his voice said otherwise.
Mitsuba adored Kou.
The way Kou makes him feel butterflies, the way Kou makes him smile as if he's the happiest being alive, the way Kou says the words that Mitsuba wanted to hear.
For Mitsuba, Kou are like his eyes.. It's there, you need it everytime, and when it's not there . . . it just doesn't feel the same for him, it's dark, and horrible. You crave its presence because it's essential. Not only that, but Kou opened Mitsuba's eyes for him. Mitsuba's once gray world is now splashed with vibrant colors, like a total rip-off of a children's book, but it's pretty, and it's nice. Mitsuba is forever grateful for Kou for painting his world.
Mitsuba was never really one to take interest in someone. He preferred to keep himself independent, a friend or two, maybe, but no one else more.
But Kou . . . Kou is an exception. Mitsuba wants him around everytime. He is not ashamed to rely on him, because Kou taught him how real friendship is supposed to be.
A best friend, a partner-in-crime, other half, soulmate, lover—really, it doesn't matter. They're two halves of the same whole and without Kou, Mitsuba didn't know what he would do. He would feel lost, and alone. So he's so happy—too goddamn happy—that Kou is there to make him feel whole.
