"Enjoy, sweetheart," the apparition whispered in her ear, her breath tickling Yashiro's skin. "Time is a cruel, little thing — I'm sure you know that more than anyone. Use it wisely."
Yashiro gasped for air, her chest rising and falling from her desperate attempt to gain back her breathing. Earlier, she was sent to a frenzy, black filled her eyes, and there was an unknown force that felt like it was squeezing her chest.
It all began when a supernatural visited Kamome, a mischievous smile gracing her red lips as she stared at Yashiro with those cat-like eyes, as if she's a predator, and Yashiro is a helpless prey. Hanako warned Yashiro to stay away from the mysterious woman, but in the end, she captured Yashiro.
"Go ahead, my dear," a voice in her mind echoed, loud, and Yashiro wanted nothing more than to get it away. "Open your eyes and rejoice, for my present is a blessing."
Yashiro did as she's told — she didn't even realize her eyes were shut tight in the first place. She trembled when she realized she was at the rooftop she knew all too well, but the atmosphere was thick, and it suffocated Yashiro. Scared. Yashiro's scared.
"Hanako-kun," she whimpered, wildly turning her head, looking for the only person who can make her feel safe in this situation. "Hanako-kun," she weakly called out again. "Hanako-kun, save me. . ."
"Hush now, my dear!" The booming voice hissed, making Yashiro wince and tear up from the volume. "Do not mention that horrid name in my territory. That boy is nothing but an annoying pest! He even threatened me so I can't get my hands on you — but, of course, he failed miserably. I almost felt bad, but the look of pure fear on his face sparked joy in my heart."
Yashiro tried to block the voice away, tears pouring down. "Stop, please!" Yashiro felt a tingle in her feet, and noticed that there was water on the ground. In fact, the whole rooftop had been flooded with water. A boundary. . ?
"He cares for you, isn't that sweet?" The woman cooed, before letting out a sadistic giggle. "Love really makes a person blind. That No. 7 never cared for anyone. That is, until, you showed up, my little raindrop. You got him wrapped around your finger."
"Where am I!?" Yashiro demanded, angry that she was taunting Hanako for such things.
"You're under my spell, sweetheart. I want to feed myself with your memories. Honorable No. 7 should be proud that I'm feeding off a person who is bound to die early, anyway!" She laughed, the kind of cackle that could break glass. Even though Yashiro can't see her, she knew that the woman was enjoying every single moment. "But I like you, dear. So, in return, I'll give you a peek of the future! Doesn't that sound like a deal?"
Yashiro's eyes widened when fog began to appear on the rooftop, as two silhouettes stood there. The cream-haired girl narrowed her eyes. Wait. . .that's Hanako-kun and I! Yashiro was about to stand up and run over to them, but she couldn't even move her hand, nor her whole body.
"I'm sorry, my dear. But this is a show. You just need to sit back—" her voice became low— "and enjoy the show!" She sang excitedly. "You might feel a bit of pain, but don't worry, I'll make it quick. You might also feel a bit sleepy." And she was right. Yashiro's eyes began to droop, but she forced herself to open her eyes. "Don't fall asleep, or else your death might come sooner than expected. We wouldn't want that now, do we?"
"Hanako-kun, what do you mean by that?" The blurry Yashiro said, fingers curled into a fist.
Hanako sighed. "I'm breaking our bond, Yashiro. I realized that in order for you to live longer, we must completely break our bond. You should undo all ties you have with the far shore," he explained, staring right at the other Yashiro's eyes, devoid of any emotion. There was no sadness, no anger. . .he was just blank.
"But why would you—"
And then Hanako smiled. He smiled! He had the audacity to smile during this situation. "You made a wish, didn't you? What was it again? You want to live for over 90 years, right?" Hanako recalled, making both of the Yashiro's breath hitch. "A bit selfish, don't you think?" Hanako joked.
Wind past by them as their hair fluttered along its rhythm. The other Yashiro began to cry, too. "I didn't—" she sniffled and used the back of her palm to wipe the tears away— "I don't want this. I didn't mean it this way."
"You made a wish from the heart, Yashiro," Hanako reminded her. "And I am a supernatural that grants wishes for the living, after all." None of what he said was false — they were all true, which made Yashiro hurt even more. "I'm doing this for you."
Yashiro's head spun and ached. She didn't know if it was from the scene in front of them, or from the fact that a supernatural was feeding away a part of herself. She felt sleepy. Can she sleep now and stop watching?
No! Stupid! Yashiro scolded herself. Don't even think of that! If you give up now, there won't be a next time. You won't wake up! Yashiro was able to move her left hand so she slapped herself, the stinging pain keeping her awake.
Yashiro looked back in front of her, and realized that only one of them was left standing there. "Hanako-kun, Hanako-kun, are you there?" The other Yashiro asked, eyes flitting around the place. No one answered her.
Then Yashiro gasped when a piercing scream echoed in her mind. It hurt her ears. It hurt her mind. Overwhelming emotions filled her. The she saw a familiar pair of eyes before black filled her vision.
"Shh, you're safe now, Yashiro."
Whenever Yashiro was in danger, whenever Yashiro was frightened, whenever Yashiro would call out for help, Hanako is always there to help her.
But of course, there'll come a time where that would fail to work.
