In the Space Between Light and Flame - Nichojoo
Trope: Angel X Demon
Where it starts
Nicholas finds EJ by accident.
Or maybe fate — or whatever cruel thing strings angels and demons together — meant for this to happen all along.
He's standing at the edge of an old city, wings folded close and nearly hidden under a mortal's coat. Watching twilight spill like ink through narrow streets.
And there, leaning against the broken wall of a church with a smirk that could cut glass, is EJ.
EJ tilts his head, eyes catching gold from a streetlamp.
"What's wrong, halo? You look like you've seen a ghost."
Nicholas's jaw clenches.
"I shouldn't be here."
"Then why are you?" EJ drawls.
Silence. Nicholas's hand curls into a fist.
EJ's smile softens just slightly.
"That's what I thought."
2. How it goes on
They keep meeting.
In alleyways. On rooftops. At the edge of rivers that shine with moonlight.
Nicholas tells himself it's to keep an eye on the demon.
EJ teases him, calls him "guardian" like it's a dirty word.
But sometimes, when the night is too quiet, they just sit side by side. Shoulders brushing. Not saying anything at all.
One evening, EJ reaches out — brushes a stray white feather from Nicholas's hair.
It burns where it touches. But Nicholas doesn't pull away.
"Careful," EJ whispers.
"I might think you actually like me."
Nicholas's breath catches.
Then very softly, almost like confessing to a sin:
"Maybe I do."
3. The fall
When they finally kiss, it's desperate. Hungry. Like it's the only thing keeping them from unraveling.
EJ's hands curl into Nicholas's shirt, pulling him closer.
Nicholas's wings flare, brilliant and trembling, wrapping them both in light.
For a moment, there's no heaven or hell. Just them. Just this impossible thing.
Then Nicholas pulls back, chest heaving.
"If they find out—"
EJ smirks, but his eyes are raw.
"Let them. I've never been afraid of burning."
Nicholas's gaze drops.
"I have."
Still, when they part that night, it's with their fingers linked tight. Like neither knows how to let go.
Because maybe some things are worth the fall.
Even angels can choose the flame — when it's wearing the shape of someone they can't live without.
Nicholas's letter to heaven
He writes it late. Kneeling in the dark, candlelight catching on the edges of his wings.
The paper shakes slightly under his hand.
To the Watchers Above,
I know what I have done.
I know the laws written in light — the lines never to be crossed, the creatures never to be touched.
And yet.
I touched him.
I have kissed sin into my own mouth. Held it against my chest until it felt like salvation.
If you call this corruption, then I am already lost.
But let it be known:
It was not temptation.
It was choice.
And I will not repent for loving what should have been forbidden.
If this damns me, then so be it.
— Nicholas
He folds the letter, presses it to his lips, then releases it into the flame. Watching the smoke curl up to places he may never be welcomed again.
EJ's protection
They're caught in an alley, surrounded by shadows that smell like sulfur.
A bigger demon steps forward — grin sharp, claws curling.
"Well, well. Our little traitor with his pretty angel prize."
Nicholas's wings twitch out instinctively, feathers bristling.
But before he can draw his blade of light, EJ is in front of him.
EJ bares his teeth.
"Touch him, and I'll rip you apart."
The other demon laughs.
"You'd spill blood for that? For him?"
EJ's hand ignites in dark fire.
"Yes."
They rush him. It's chaos, claws and smoke and snarled curses.
Nicholas tries to push forward, but EJ throws out an arm — keeps him behind, takes the blows himself. Darkness roils off EJ's skin, wild and furious.
When it's over, the other demon is gone, dissolving into shrieking ash.
EJ stands trembling, blood dripping down his jaw. His eyes are molten — not with hellfire, but something heartbreakingly close to devotion.
Nicholas steps forward, touches EJ's cheek, ignoring the burn.
"Why would you do that? Why would you—"
EJ grabs his wrist. Presses it hard against his chest where his heart still pounds.
"Because I may be damned, but you're mine."
💬 Final small moment
Nicholas lets out a shaky breath.
Then presses their foreheads together, whispering,
"Then I'll be damned with you."
And for the first time in all his long existence, EJ actually looks afraid — because this is something even hell never prepared him for.
