chapter three:
drifting apart

The sunlight was bright when she opened her eyes, she let out a weak breath as she turned to her side. Letting her face push deeper into her pillow as she slipped the covers over herself more. The cold breeze that came in from her window made her shiver, despite her eyes being closed she could still feel the presence of Josh beside her.

She knew he was awake by the way he breathed, his fingers weakly pushing her hair back. She felt empty inside almost every time he would touch her, it was like a chore for him with the way he'd do it so desperately. A means of healing his inner soul or something is what he'd call it. He didn't do it out of love or any connection, it was all for a distraction.

A way to please himself while she tried to search for that connection they held the first time they slept together. It was special and actually not rushed or awkward. Last night was awkward due to Josh not even looking at her once, he didn't even kiss her. A solid ten minutes and then he laid down beside her and slept while she stared at the ceiling.

She loved Josh, and she knew he was just trying his best. The medication he was on made it hard for him to do anything these days, so last night she didn't expect much, she was just glad he didn't run off like all the other times. That he stayed with her and kept her safe while she slept. She sighed softly as Josh sat up, she heard him mumbling to himself as he grabbed his clothes off the ground.

"I think we should break up" Hazel nearly gave herself whiplash with how fast she sat up. She felt so small and broken as she looked at him with concern "what? Joshua why would you even say that" she pushed the blanket over herself as he put his jacket on. He didn't say anything but she saw the hurt hidden deep inside his eyes "Joshua, don't ignore me".

She climbed off her bed approaching him as he put his shoes on "look if this is about you going away, I don't care about that. I mean I can wait for you, I'll visit and call if that helps you get better. I'm not gonna just ditch you because of it". He looked at her "I don't want you waiting on me, what don't you get Hazel".

She shrunk into herself as she licked her lips nervously "Josh, you're not thinking straight or something. If this is about last night, I don't care because it doesn't matter. I love you, and I don't care if you're sick, or that you ignore me half the time, or that you never really kiss me much these days. You just need to get better, and I can wait, I'll always wait because I love you Josh".

He walked towards her door and she moved forward "Josh please, don't just leave me like this. Especially after last night, at least look at me, tell me to my face!". He looked at her but he didn't say anything as he left her room "Joshua! Don't leave me here!".

She heard him leave, and she let out a shaky breath as her lip quivered. Tears ran down her cheeks as she let herself sink into her ground, maybe this was all a dream and she'd wake up. When her phone began to ring she ignored it as she wiped at her face aggressively. She sniffled as she stood up, she couldn't let this break her, not now when Beth and Hannah still needed her.

She walked towards her closet grabbing her jacket and boots before she looked outside her window. Light patches of rain hit her window and she saw some snow as she quickly got dressed and grabbed her car keys off her desk. She ran outside getting into her car and quickly driving off.

It was freezing, but Hazel didn't care as she sat down on the small bench. No one answered her calls or messages when she asked for help, none of the friend group really liked her much. Maybe Sam but the girl was busy or maybe just ignoring her altogether. Hazel pushed her hair behind her ear as she watched a few cars drive past. She wasn't sure why she came to the park of all places but it was the only quiet place she could think of. Hannah used to take her here on weekends and they'd sit on this bench.

They'd talk for hours about people driving by and guessing what they did for a living. If they were lucky they'd get it right, Hannah had a way with words and Hazel missed the girls company. When it was warmer outside they'd all ditch the park overall and attend the lodge for Baseball, Josh always used to flirt with Hazel by accidentally throwing his ball too close to her. His perfect excuse at getting closer to her even if it ended with Beth or Hannah telling him off.

Hazel missed those days, the times Josh would smile and it'd reach his beautiful eyes. She'd hold his hand for hours and picture the perfect future. Beth claimed she was crazy for thinking of the future so early but Hazel never really cared, not when it involved Josh.

She sighed as she leaned back against the bench, she could drive and maybe see the lodge again but she didn't have a key to the cable car. So it was pointless when the Washington's weren't letting anyone besides the police up there, it was pretty much abandoned and scary. Hazel didn't want to go alone anyways, even if she wanted to find Hannah and Beth herself.

She would get answers sooner or later hopefully, but then again the police stopped searching and they claimed they didn't find anything. Hazel found that hard to believe, especially with all the creepy shit she's seen at the lodge a few times. Something wasn't adding up. When the time was right, she'd finally figure out what happened that night when Hannah and Beth ran off into those woods.

—Authors notes: writing short chapters is kinda a vibe, I get so much more done and I don't have to stress much about editing long ass paragraphs after the fact. Of course the actual game chapters I might do a chapter for each chapter in the game so that'd be like 10 in total, unless I overall make short chapters and split them up, but I'm not sure yet. Anyways one more basic chapter left then we enter the until Dawn era and I can't wait for Hazel to be a bad ass.
