ten. the turning point

CHAPTER TEN
the return of logan fell!

"Did I miss something?" Elena asked her friends, looking confused when she spotted Caroline and Matt laughing together at the opposite end of the hallway.

"They've been hanging out, I guess." Iylah simply shrugged at her, not really knowing much about what was going on with them, either.

"Kinda weird, don't you think?"

"Eh," Quinn tilted her head slightly, voicing her disagreement, "I'm not fussed really, as long as she's happy. Care needs someone nice like him—"

Bonnie raised a brow. "As opposed to a homicidal vampire like Damon." She chimed in with a small frown etched on her face, causing the girls to look over at the witch in concern━━knowing she still remembered what happened to her at the Church ruins with Stefan and Damon. On the other hand, Iylah had also been checking up on Quinn, who seemed to be handling the whole━━Iylah being a witch and vampires are real thing━━quite well. Obviously it would take some time getting used too of course, but it never really changed anything for her.

"Yeah, how are you doing with all that?" Elena asked Bonnie, wanting to make sure her friend was still okay after what happened.

"I'm freaked out." Bonnie breathed out. "Damon attacked me. I could be dead right now. But, I'm also grateful." She mentioned, earning a confused hum from the Gilbert girl. "To Stefan. He saved my life..." Elena hummed once again, not saying a word as she began to remove her scarf from her neck when they approached her locker. "Have you seen him?"

Elena opened up her locker with a sigh, chucking her scarf and bag inside. "Not since he told me he was leaving. For all I know, he's already gone."

Bonnie tilted her head, concerned. "He wouldn't leave without saying goodbye." She attempted to reassure her best friend, but it didn't seem to be working as Elena threw her a look while starting to retrieve her books from her locker. "Yes, he would. He thinks he's protecting me. Clean break and all that."

"So, what are you gonna do?" Iylah asked.

"What am I supposed to do?" Elena sighed and closed the locker door behind her. "I've already begged him not to go. If I ask again, I'm being selfish. It is what it is."

"Well, maybe it's for the best." Bonnie said as the four of them resumed walking down the hallway, before Elena paused and turned to face her best friend with furrowed eyebrows. "What? Why?"

"I mean, what kind of future could you have had with him, even if he stayed?" Bonnie questioned just before a banner had dropped down from the ceiling right in front of them, that read━━The Promise of your Future.

Quinn widened her eyes slightly, gesturing to the message on the blue banner that they had picked up. "Did you just...?"

"No, I swear." Bonnie instantly shook her head, knowing they were wondering whether or not she could've done that with her new psychic abilities somehow. Elena sighed, hitting the banner out of the way before she stormed off to her class.

When she felt Quinn stare at her, Iylah rolled her eyes and let out a puff of air. "No, I didn't do that, either." She quickly explained. "That banner just hadn't been hung up properly."

Logan Fell was back. Iylah was only standing next to Quinn at the career fair in school, the two of them looking at their artwork when Jenna had approached them, wanting their help because she was trying to avoid her ex-boyfriend━━who had apparently just showed up there.

However, by the look on Stefan's face when they led Jenna over to him and Elena to tell them the news, Iylah could tell almost straight away there was something deeply wrong.

"Stefan, what's going on?" Elena sighed when she and the others stepped outside the classroom and found him standing there, with his eyes zeroed in on a very-much alive Logan Fell. The last time he saw the man, Damon had killed him, so if he was alive now━━it could have only meant one thing in their world━━Logan was now a vampire.

Logan was quick to rush over to the group, with his attention glued to his ex-girlfriend, wearing his signature smirk. "Jenna, are you dodging me?"

"It's a form of self-preservation."

"Um," Stefan quickly interjected before Logan could continue striking up a conversation with Jenna, and looked at his ex-girlfriend. "Elena, why don't you guys go somewhere else?"

The Gilbert girl stared back at him, confused for a second before she noticed the glance he threw in her aunt's direction, making her understand immediately. "Let's go." Elena grabbed Jenna's hand and pulled her away with Iylah and Quinn right behind them.

"Uh," Quinn's eyebrows knit together when she turned her head to whisper to her friend, "am I missing something here?"

Iylah pursed her lips. "Let's just say, he's out for blood." She replied, trying to be vague with her answer, and it only took Quinn a few seconds to realise the meaning behind her words.

Before she could comment further on the subject, Elena finally pulled Jenna aside when they were far enough from Logan and Stefan. "When Logan came to the house, what did he say?"

Jenna sighed and rolled her eyes. "Fake flattery, stupid, dimpled grin, puppy-dog eyes—"

"I'm serious, Jenna." Elena interjected. "How did he act? What did he say?" She inquired, sounding desperate for these answers so she could confirm her suspicions.

"He was the usual Logan." The Sommers woman shrugged slightly. "Charming, a little more manic than usual. He kept trying to convince me to let him in." And there it was. "What?" Jenna's brows furrowed when she noticed the look she received from the three girls.

"Okay, listen to me very carefully." Elena started to say, her tone laced with urgency. "Do not, under any circumstances, talk to him again. I'm serious, Jenna, like ever."

But before Jenna could question her why, Alaric Saltzman━━the new history teacher━━walked up to them. "Hey, girls. Jenna." A beaming smile had graced his lips when Jenna turned around to look at him.

"Hi, Mr. Saltzman." His three students replied at the same time.

Although, his eyes were still on Jenna, trying to strike up a conversation with the woman. "Yeah, I was hoping to see you tonight."

"Career night is the new bowling." Jenna smiled kindly at the man who chuckled in reply━━the pair of them unaware of the smirks on Iylah and Quinn's faces as they shared a look.

"Okay, um, excuse me." Elena looked stressed as she quickly excused herself and walked off down the hallway with Iylah and Quinn in tow as they tried to find Stefan, soon finding the vampire standing outside alone, on the phone━━to who they assumed was Damon━━and approached him just as he hung up the phone.

Elena crossed her arms over her chest, looking at him with a stern expression. "So, anything you'd like to share?"

Iylah grimaced. "This is awkward." She mumbled under her breath.

"I'm really worried, Iylah." Quinn frowned at her best friend, who's been trying to comfort her ever since Matt had informed them that Caroline had gotten a ride home from Logan Fell, who was still mad about not getting what he wanted━━which was an answer from Stefan or Damon about how they were able to walk around in the sun.

"I know." The Hale girl sighed, knowing there wasn't much she could say to reassure the girl, until she had proof.

Thankfully, that was when Stefan had come back from wherever he rushed off to━━the vampire's return gaining the girls' attention when the three of them quickly headed over to him. "Is Caroline okay?" Quinn was the first to ask as soon as they caught up to the Salvatore boy.

"She's okay." Stefan responded, keeping his voice low as they walked down the hallway. "I took her home. She was shaken up. But, all she knows is Logan attacked her, nothing else."

Quinn let out a relieved breath, glad that Caroline was safe at home. Iylah smiled slightly, giving her friend's arm a soft squeeze before she pulled her hand away. "And where's Logan now?"

"Damon is..." He trailed off, trying to figure out how to word his answer appropriately. "dealing with him."

"As in...?" Stefan nodded his head, confirming what Elena was thinking.

Iylah glanced between the pair before she latched her hand onto Quinn's. "We'll give you guys some privacy." The Hale girl excused before pulling her friend away from the former couple so they could talk.

"You saw what happened tonight, right?" Stefan reminded the Gilbert girl who reached her hand out to touch his arm to provide comfort, though, he crossed his arms over his chest, causing Elena to retract her hand. "I mean, you understand why we can't be together? You see it?"

"Yeah, I'm starting to see a lot of things, Stefan." Elena pressed her lips into a flat line. "Come on. I'll, uh, I'll give you a ride. But, I will be dropping the girls off first."

"Uh, I can get home."

Elena smiled lightly. "I know."

"All right. That'd be nice." Stefan said before the two of them walked off further down the hallway to where Iylah and Quinn were waiting for them.
