───── NORMAN ──────
I started fiddling around with my food, my face flushing red with annoyance and frustration, but most of all, determination. Come on, I need to get high scores on the daily test, I can't flunk out again because of my staring disease at Emma.
"Children, breakfast is finished. Could all over the age of 6 please join us for the daily test!" Mama Isabella announced. I took a deep breath and stood up, realising I hadn't taken a single bite of my breakfast and neither had Ray. On the other hand, Emma had completely demolished her plate. I couldn't help but stifle a small giggle.
I took my seat at the examination table. The middle desk of the last row. Ray on one side, Emma on the other. I smiled at each one of them as we picked up our swipers. Mama Isabella flicked off the light and like magic, we all began working. I saw how quickly Emma and Ray went through each question with confidence and soon, I did eventually find my rhythm. It felt like seconds, intense pressure sinking through my head but I completed the test without any trouble. Emma and Ray had finished at exactly the same time as me.
"Emma, Ray, and Norman tying for first place with full marks each," Mama announced calmly. She gave me a warm smile and I couldn't help but grin back. Emma bounced with joy but Ray sulked in the corner for no reason.
"Emma, I don't know why you're always so happy. You know we always tie anyways." He murmured but Emma just smiled.
"Yeah, well, it makes me feel better knowing that one didn't do better than the other, we're all equally minded!" Her smile was contagious, it brightened my day.
"She's right," I replied, "It's good to know we're not competing." Ray snorted as if to say: "Hey, buddy, we're competing for Emma, whether you like it or not."
I heard Conny's exasperated sigh, "Ugh, I didn't do too well, what did you guys get?" Soon, they all joined in the conversation, spilling all the details of their exam. And when someone started to feel bad about their score, Emma always cheered them up. Whether she did a cartwheel or just said a few lines, she always made someone happy. One way or another. It's one thing I admire about her.
"Norman." Mama Isabella's abrupt voice jolted me from my thoughts. She motioned for me to come. "It's good to see you getting back to you're normal pace. I was wondering how long you'd be down in the ranks." Her smile melted into a grimace, "Norman, things are getting serious and you have to become more focused to get more consistency in your marks. Your life depends on it." With that, she left, her whisp of mysteriousness tingling in the air...
My life depended on it...?
