Chapter 22: Osiris
EPISODES 34-35
Y/n's POV
We were finally in Cairo
"Cairo is immense. Rather than searching aimlessly, we should work our way from the outskirts inward to the center" Avdol says as we all get out of a car
"We're finally here" Joseph says. We walked to a bar
"Welcome, foreigners. What would you like?" The bartender asks
"There's something I'd like to ask you" Joseph says. He then drops the photos on the counter
"We're looking for the building in this picture. Do you know where it is?" Joseph asks
"Sirs and Ma'am, this is a Cafe. Please order something" The bartender says
"Five iced teas" Joseph says. Avdol leaves money on the counter. The man pours us our drinks as he looks at the photos. He finished pouring our drinks
"Nope, I don't recognize it" He says. We all drink our iced trash and then set them down
"This building, huh?"
"I can't tell from just a picture"
"Sorry, it doesn't look familiar"
"I see. Sorry to bother you" Joseph says taking the photos from a guy
"No problem"
"Come on. Let's continue our investigation" Joseph says as we all begin walking out
"I know that building" a voice says
"What?!" We all ask
"No doubt about it. It's that building" the man says
"W-Was it you who just said that? I just heard someone say they know their building" Joseph says
"Yes. I did indeed say that I know where the mansion in that picture is located" the man says
"What? Really?!" Joseph asks as we all approach him
"That's great to hear!" Avdol says
"Yes! We're pretty lucky to gave found someone who knows where it is from this picture" Polnareff says
"Saves me all the extra work" I say
"What work were you going to do?" Polnareff asks
"What were you going to do? Flirt with some girls?!" I ask. We both glare at eachother
"That's enough children" Avdol says
"Where? Please tell us! Where is it?" Joseph asks. The man made the cards stand up
"Are you asking me to give you the answer for free?" The man asks
"Uh ye-" I began but someone's large hand covered my mouth. I look to see Jotaro's jacket
"Y-You've got a point. Sorry about that. I'll pay you ten pounds. (.64 USD) So, where is it?" Joseph asks. The man declines the money and chuckles
"I love gambling. I'm a sucker for cheap thrills. I can't get enough of them. Well, you could say that I make my living gambling. Do you like gambling?" The man asks
Get to the point
"I'm not sure what you're getting at" Joseph says
"If you don't like gambling, just say so" The man says
"I'm asking you exactly what you mean by that" Joseph says
"Well, would you make a silly little wager with me? If you win, I'll tell you where that place is for free" The man says
"Wager? I'm pretty confident when it comes to wagers, but we don't have time to play poker right now. I'll give you another twenty pounds, (1.27 USD) so please just tell us" Joseph says
"The thing about gambling is, you can do it with anything. It won't take anytime at all. For example, look over there. See that cat?" The man asks. He picks up two pieces of smoked fish and throws them. They hit the ground
"Now, why don't we bet on which smoked fish that cat will eat first? Right or left? How about it? It's silly, but thrilling" The man says. Polnareff slams his fist on the table
Felt that Polnareff
"Hey! You're really starting to annoy me! Just take the thirty pounds, (1.91 USD) and hurry up and tell us!" Polnareff says pointing. Joseph grabs his arm
"Polnareff, that's not the way to ask someone for information" Joseph scolds him. Polnareff slams his hand on the table once more
"Okay, fine! Then I'll make a bet. I pick the one on the right!" Polnareff says
We don't have time for this
"Good! Now it's getting fun. Then I shall wager on the left" The man says
What are we wagering though? Polnareff you idiot
Hey, now" Joseph says
"Hey, Jotaro, Miss Y/n. Isn't he rather suspicious?" Avdol asks us
"Yeah, he might be an enemy stand user. But he might just be a compulsive gambler" Jotaro says
"What are we wagering though?" I ask
"Good question. Oh, and Jotaro. If he does anything even remotely strange, plow through him with Star Platinum" Avdol says
"Got it" Jotaro says
"By the way, If I lose, what am I supposed to pay you? Like, a hundred pounds (6.36 USD) ?" Polnareff asks
"I don't need money. How about your soul? I'll take your soul" The man says
That's really weird
"What?" Polnareff asks
"Your answer?" The man asks
"Yeah, okay, sure. That's fine" Polnareff says
This isn't a good idea
"Oh? The cat has taken notice of the smoked fish" The man says as the cat begins running towards it
"The kitty's going to the right" Polnareff says cockily. The cat suddenly goes to the left and takes that one and then the right one
"You saw it. It first took the left, the the right, and then ran. I win" The man says
"Hey, you lost, Polnareff. What are you going to do now? I'm getting sick of asking around about that building" Joseph says
"Now, then. As per our agreement, let's have you pay up" the man says
"Huh? Pay? Pay what?" Polnareff asks
"Your soul. That is indeed what you just wagered. Your soul! I am a stand user that steals souls! Gambling makes it easier for the human soul to leave its vessel. It is my stand's power to steak it at that moment!" The man says. We then see Polnareff's soul. My eyes went wide
"What?! What's going on?!" Joseph asks
"Polnareff!" Jotaro says. He then looks at the man
"Hold it! Don't kill me. It's too late! If I die, Polnareff's soul, which is in my stand's grasp, will also die" The man says
"Polnareff!" Avdol says catching him
"H-Hey!" Joseph says
"H-He has no pulse" Avdol says. I rush over and sit down. I put Polnareff's head in my lap as I pull out my stand
"Is there anything you can do Miss Y/n?" Avdol asks. As my stand touches him a grim look on my face appears
"No.." I mutter out
"He's dead! Polnareff is dead!" Avdol says
"Polnareff!" Joseph yells out. The man's stand then turned Polnareff's soul into a poker chip. The man picked up said chip
"This is Polnareff's soul. This means I've already gotten rid of one of the people trying to get in Lord Dio's way. Even if he was just a fool. It's a little overdue, but allow me to introduce myself. My name is D'Arby. D-A-R-B-Y. There's an apostrophe after the D" D'Arby says. The cat then sits on his lap and then moves to his shoulder
"By the way, this is my cat" D'Arby says. Avdol grabs him by his shirt
"Y-You scum! Don't screw with us! A bet? It was just a scam!" Avdol says angrily
"A scam? Listen. If you've been scammed, the one who failed to see through it is the loser. I believe gambling is just like relationships. It's all about fooling the other. The one who cries loses. Are you going to kill me with your bare hands? Very well. Do it. If you want this soul to die, as well" D'Arby says
"Listen here. You will not walk away from this in one piece" Avdol says
"Do you remember what you were doing on the night of September 22nd, 1984 at 11:15 PM?" D'Arby asks
"What are you talking about?" Avdol asks. D'Arby gets out of Avdol's hold
"I remember. Around that time in California, I was gambling with an American man named Stephen Moore, and he said the same thing you just did" D'Arby says. He then pulls out a book filled with poker chips
"This is him" He says pointing to a chip
"The one below is Moor's father, and his wife is right next to him. If you want to get Polnareff's soul back, you have no choice but to continue gambling with me" D'Arby says
He could very well get us all
"What will you do? If you're scared, you can go home and leave Polnareff behind" D'Arby says giggling
"Well, have a drink and think about it long and hard. How about some chocolate?" D'Arby asks. Joseph walks over with a bottle in his hand. He then clears the table. He sets a cup down and then fills the cup with a liquid.
"M-Mister Joestar, what are you trying to do?" Avdol asks
"Have you heard of surface tension, Barbie?" Joseph asks. I almost started laughing but I held it in
"It's D'Arby. My name is D'Arby. It's the force that's keeping that drink from breaking the surface, correct? What do you plan to do?" D'Arby asks
"The rules are simple" Joseph began
He's not seriously going to is he?
"We'll take turns putting coins in this glass. The one who makes it overflow loses" Joseph says
"Hey, this isn't smart" I say
"Old man, Y/n is right" Jotaro says
"Y-You can't mean, Mister Joestar!" Avdol says
"I'll wager my soul on it!" Joseph says
What?!
"Good!" D'Arby says
"What?! Impossible! Please don't! He's a con artist!" Avdol says
"I won't let him cheat! I'm the one who chose the method of this wager! Jotaro, make sure he doesn't cheat" Joseph says
"Okay! That's fine. I shall take this bet. But first, do you mind if I inspect the glass and coins?" D'Arby asks
"Of course, you have that right. You also have the right to make sure I'm not cheating" Joseph says. D'Arby begins inspecting the cup and the coins
"First, will you guarantee that if you lose, you will return Polnareff's soul, no matter what?" Joseph asks. D'Arby flips a coin and catches it
"I am a gambler. I do have my pride. If I lose, I always pay up. I won't lose, though" D'Arby says. I looked down at Polnareff and frowned
We're gonna save you, don't worry
"Very well. You can go first. Put in a coin" Joseph says
"Mister Joestar!" Avdol says
"Just leave this to me" Joseph says
"May I put in more than one coin at a time?" D'Arby asks
"If you can do it all at once" Joseph says
"Well, then" D'Arby says getting ready to put five in
"F-Five?!" Avdol asks
"Hey, I think I saw a little wave in there" Joseph says
"Quiet. Don't touch the table" D'Arby says. He manages to put all five in
But how?!
"It's your turn" he says chuckling
"Your guts are quite impressive, to put in five at once. I'll go with one. That was too close" Joseph says. He then drops one coin in
"This is bad for my heart. I thought it was going to spill. Now it's your turn, Obie" Joseph says. D'Arby grabs Joseph's hand
"It's D'Arby. Don't mistake that again! My name is D'Arby! It's not Obie or Barbie!" D'Arby says getting agitated
"My apologies. Let's continue our wager. It's your turn to put in a coin, D'Arby" Joseph says. D'Arby ate some of the chocolate
"There's a shadow, so this angle is difficult. I'll put it in from the right side of the table" D'Arby says
"You may put it in from wherever you like" Joseph says.
"You're thinking that this glass' surface tension is at its limit. That it's impossible, right? But that's not true" D'Arby says putting the coin in
"I-Impossible! It can't be! There's no way it wouldn't overflow!" Joseph says
You idiot
I facepalm realizing he just exposed himself
"What do you mean, there's no way it wouldn't overflow? As you can see, it went in" Joseph says
"He made no suspicious moves that could've been cheating. I was watching with Star Platinum. He put the coin in fairly. There's no doubt about it" Joseph says
"Go ahead, Mister Joestar. Hurry it up. Or are you trying to wait until it evaporates?" D'Arby asks. Joseph begins breathing loudly as he shakily picks up a coin
"I-I can't believe it" Joseph says
"Mister Joestar!" Avdol yells. We then watch Joseph's soul leave his body
"Joestar acknowledged in his mind that he'd already lost the bet! That's why his soul emerged. I, D'Arby, have won this bet!" D'Arby says. Me and Avdol move Joseph's now lifeless body onto the ground. We set him next to Polnareff. We then watched the stand turn him into a poker chip
"Mister Joestar!" Avdol yelled
"Old man!" Jotaro said
"Joseph!" I say
"That's two! Now, then. Let us continue gambling. As long as you three don't abandon these two and run away with your tails between your legs, that is" D'Arby says
"You scum!" Avdol says. He then pins D'Arby to the ground
"You don't learn, do you? If you kill me, these two souls will die, as well" D'Arby says. Avdol raises a fist
"Avdol, stop!" Jotaro says. The bartender walks up to us. I stand up
"Hey! If you're going to make trouble, I'll have to ask you to leave!" He says
"Mind your business and keep your mouth shut!" I say with a harsh glare
"Yes, ma'am!" He says. I look to make sure Joseph and Polnareff are still there. I then then turn to see Jotaro picking up the glass. D'Arby then began to giggle
"You realized it too late, Jotaro" D'Arby says
"Is there something wrong with the glass?" Avdol asks
"This is how one more coin went in. There was a tiny bit of chocolate on the bottom of the glass' outside. Before they started the game, he asked to inspect the glass and coins, and that's when he stuck it on" Jotaro says
That little...
"I believe you are aware that if it's not discovered in time, you can't call it cheating" D'Arby says
"Wh-What do you mean? How is a bit of chocolate the reason the coin fit?" Avdol asks
"It's melted now, but until a moment ago, it was solid at the bottom of the glass. He used just enough so we wouldn't notice, but the glass was propped up so it would tilt. Once it melt the surface became level. Even though the surface tension was at its limit, he made it so at least one more coin would fit" Jotaro says
"Wh-What?! B-But, could chocolate actually melt with such convenient timing?" Avdol asks
"He melted it using the sun's heat. I didn't notice. He went to the right side of the table so the sun's rays would directly hit the glass and melt the chocolate" Jotaro says. D'Arby stands up and pats his clothes. He then giggles once more. We all glare at the man
"Fine. D'Arby, get your trump card ready. We'll finish with poker" Jotaro says. Me and Avdol's eyes widened
"J-Jotaro!" He says
"You can't be serious!" I say
"How interesting! Poker is one of the games I'm best at!" D'Arby says
"Poker? This man just beat Mister Joestar! I-It's too dangerous!" Avdol says
"I know. He's not violent, but he's still more dangerous than any other stand user we've met so far, but I can't afford not to do this. Before we get started, there's something I want to try. Shuffle those cards" Jotaro says sitting down. D'Arby begins shuffling the cards
"They're shuffled. What now?" D'Arby asks
"It doesn't matter which one, but pick a card from anywhere near the deck's top and flip it. Only show yourself the card" Jotaro says. D'Arby does as told
"Okay, I've looked" D'Arby says
"I'll tell you which card it is: the six of hearts. I'll name the cards in order from the top. Five of spades, queen of diamonds, jack of spades, ace of hearts. Seven of diamonds, six of clubs, king of clubs, two of diamonds" Jotaro says. D'Arby lays them all out and to me and Avdol's surprise, he was in fact correct
"That's correct! But D'Arby is the one who shuffled. How did you?" Avdol asks
"I can name all of the cards, in order, from top to bottom. My Star Platinum was able to see the order of the cards as they were being shuffled" Jotaro says
"That's very interesting, but that just means I have to make sure you don't see me shuffling the cards" D'Arby says
"Don't you get it? This means you won't be able to cheat. I just wanted to let you know that" Jotaro says
"Good" D'Arby says. D'Arby hands Jotaro a box of cards that hasn't been opened yet. Jotaro then opens the box of cards. Jotaro lays them out
"There's one joker. I don't see anything unusual. They're ordinary playing cards" Jotaro says. He then puts all the cards together
"Okay! Open the game!" D'Arby says. He then grabs part of the now shuffled stack
"Ten of hearts" D'Arby says showing his card. Jotaro grabs a part of the stack
"Seven of clubs" He says
"Looks like I'm the dealer" D'Arby says. He grabs all the cards and begins shuffling them once more
"Cut, if you please" D'Arby says. Jotaro cuts the stack
"And now, I shall deal. To Jotaro, to me, to Jotaro, to me" D'Arby says. Suddenly Jotaro pulls out Star Platinum and breaks D'Arby's finger. He cries out in pain
"Wh-What?! What happened?! Jotaro, his finger! Star Platinum just broke D'Arby's finger out of the blue!" Avdol says
"He probably got caught cheating" I say to Avdol.
"I told you. I won't let you get away with cheating" Jotaro says.
"Miss Y/n was right, cheating? When? He was just dealing the cards. He didn't make any suspicious moves" Avdol says
"No. Take a good look at the cards in his left hand" Jotaro says. We then see the second card sticking out
"That's the card he just tried to give me. He made it look like he was dealing in order from the top, but he was actually trying to give me the second card from the top. That means, the card on top would have gone to him. He would've had three tens with that card" Jotaro says
"Wh-What a horrible man. Breaking my finger" D'Arby says
"No, I'm being forgiving. I could've just cut your finger off" Jotaro says. I grab a chair and sit down
"I could always heal you" I say pulling out a lollipop I bought earlier
"Please do" he says
"For free?" I ask
"I can pay you money" He says as he holds his hand
"No, I'd rather have my friends souls back" I say. He grits his teeth
"I don't need healing" He says
"Suit yourself" I say putting the lollipop in my mouth
"Good grief. I can't trust you to shuffle the cards. Let's have someone who's not playing deal. Let's ask the boy on top of that hill" Jotaro says
"Good" D'Arby says
"I'll go grab him" I say
"Avdol go with her" Jotaro says
"All right" He says. We both walk towards the boy. I didn't notice Avdol had stayed to listen to D'Arby so I went by myself. I walked up to the boy
"Hey, can you come help us? I promise we'll pay you" I say holding out some money. A smile appears on his face as he nods. I began walking back and the boy followed me. As we got back I heard D'Arby talking
"Understood? Now then, Jotaro. I'd like to give you some chips to bet, as well, but I haven't heard you say a certain line yet" D'Arby says as we approach the table
"Fine. I'll bet my soul" Jotaro says
"Good" D'Arby says
"Jotaro" Avdol says. D'Arby hands Jotaro some blank chips
"The chips that are as white as snow represent your soul. Once I take six of those from you, you will lose your soul" D'Arby says. We got the boy to deal for us. He grabbed the cards and shuffled, he then began dealing
"I will use one of Polnareff's chips as my opening ante" D'Arby says tossing it is on the table. Jotaro tosses one of his own
"Let us begin!" D'Arby says. They both look at their hand's
"Now, I shall discard two cards" D'Arby says tossing another chip
"Jotaro, your soul is represented by a mere six chips. Make sure you consider your moves carefully" D'Arby says. The boy looked concerned. Avdol put a hand on his shoulder
"Boy, you don't need to understand what's going on. Dony worry about a thing. Just shuffle and deal the cards normally" Avdol says
"O-Okay" The boy says
"I'll take three cards" Jotaro says. He's then dealt three cards
"My, my. What a frightening expression. You must have a very good hand. Maybe I should play it safe and bet just one Polnareff" D'Arby says
"Call" Jotaro says. Each side now had bet three chips
"All right! It's game time, Jotaro!" D'Arby says. Jotaro laid out his cards
"Two pair, nines over eights" Jotaro says
"I'm so sorry. Two pair, queens over jacks. That was close. I almost lost" D'Arby says giggling. I felt my stomach start to sink
There's no way Jotaro is going to lose... right?
"So then" D'Arby says. He then collects the chips as he giggles
"J-Jotaro" Avdol says. I began to swear knowing he now only had three chips left
"Next hand. Deal" Jotaro says tossing one. D'Arby does the same and the boy begins to deal
"It might not just be your next hand, but your last. I'll draw one card" D'Arby says. Jotaro hasn't even picked up his cards
"What's the matter, Jotaro? Hurry and look at your cards, and decide whether you'll bet or fold" D'Arby says
"Jotaro?" Avdol asks
"I'll keep my cards as they are" Jotaro says
"What?" Me and Avdol ask
"Ah, forgive me, but what did you say? Did I hear you wrong? I thought I heard you say that you would keep your cards" D'Arby says
"You heard right. I'm keeping my cards. I'll play with these five cards" Jotaro says
"I understand that! I'm asking if you intend to play those cards without looking at them" D'Arby says
"These cards are fine" Jotaro says. D'Arby began getting worked up
"You can't be serious! Answer me! How can you play cards you haven't even seen?!" D'Arby asks
"By the way, Avdol, Y/n, I have a request" Jotaro says
"A request?" We both ask
"R-Right. Of course, but why aren't you looking at your cards?" Avdol asks
"I told you to answer me, Jotaro!" D'Arby says
"In addition to my last three chips. I'll wager Avdol's soul and Y/n's if she accepts" Jotaro says
Wager my soul? You must really believe you're going to win so I'll trust you
"You can" I say
"And there's that" he says
"Wh- What?!" D'Arby asks
"D'Arby, you're a calm man. Every move you make is calculated. You may not be powerful, but you are truly strong. I am not a man suited to gambling, as I easily become emotional. If I played you, I would most likely lose, but I believe in Jotaro. I'm not sure what his unseen cards mean, but if Jotaro has asked me to wager, I shall do so in total faith. Even if that wager is my soul" Avdol says
"Honestly if I played against you, I'd totally cheat. I'm not that good at gambling so I'd rely on petty tricks to win like Joseph. Like what Avdol said, I'm not sure what Mister em- Jotaro is planning but I trust him enough with my life" I say
"Well, this is. You've three been overwhelmed by excitement. You aren't thinking straight
"You know the human body contains 206 bones. Jotaro already broke one but I don't mind breaking the rest for your last comment" I say cracking my knuckles
"Miss Y/n" Avdol says scolding me. I groan
"Boy! I said I was changing one card. Hurry it up" D'Arby says
"O-Okay" The boy says. I saw subtle eye contact between the two and then I watched the boy smirk
Oh, what's this?
"Hmph. Very well" D'Arby says
"You know, cheating isn't a very good thing" I say yawning. D'Arby sweat drops
"What do you mean?" Avdol asks
"Nothing" I say laughing
If this all goes bad at the very last moment I'll call him out for cheating
"I see, in addition to your three, I'll call with all six of Polnareff's chips. But on top of that I shall raise you all six of Joestar's chips. That brings the total to fifteen" D'Arby says
"What? Wh-What?! Hold on a minute! Jotaro doesn't have any more chips to wager!" Avdol says
"What are you thinking about? Of course he does" D'Arby says
"What do you mean?" Avdol asks
"Well, for proof, I'll need you to write this down. Then my stand will be able to work" D'Arby says
"What are you talking about?" Avdol asks
"You still have the soul of Kakyoin, who's still in the hospital" D'Arby says
"What?!" Avdol asks
"Throw in my parents as well. You can use them as chips as well" I say finishing the lollipop. D'Arby stares at me wide eyed. I only smirk
"Fine. I shall wager Kakyoin's soul along with Y/n's parents soul's" Jotaro says.
"J-Jotaro! You're wagering the souls of people who aren't even here!" Avdol says
"Is that going too far?" Jotaro asks. Star Platinum then lights Jotaro a cigarette
"Hey, Jotaro! What did you just do?!" D'Arby asks
"What did I do? What are you talking about?" Jotaro asks
"You just lit a cig-" D'Arby cut himself off
"Is something the matter? Are you not feeling well?" Jotaro asks. The boy began panting and looked in D'Arby's direction
Oh look at me, so smart. That boy is definitely working for him
Jotaro began drinking a blue drink
"Y-You've got a drink!? When did you.. Y-You scum! How dare you underestimate me?! Very well, let us do this! My cards are-" D'Arby began
"Hold it. I still have the right to raise" Jotaro says
He's not going to, is he?
"What?!" Avdol asks
"R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-Raise?! You don't have anything left to wage-" D'Arby says
(In the sub he stutters like this)
Jotaro puts more chips down
"I rase you my mother's soul" Jotaro says
"What?!" D'Arby asks
"Your mother?! Jotaro, Miss Holly's soul" Avdol says
"I came to Egypt to save my mother. So if I wager her soul, she won't complain. But, D'Arby, you'll have to match my mother's soul. For that, I'll have you tell me the secret of Dio's stand!" Jotaro says. D'Arby falls out of his seat as he begins panting
"Well? Do you bet or not? Let's hear you say it loud and clear, D'Arby!" Jotaro says. D'Arby begins making inaudible noises
"I'll say it!" D'Arby says
"Ca-C-C-Ca-C-C-C" D'Arby stuttered out. His hair began to turn grey
"C-C-C-C-C-C-C-C-Ca-Ca-" D'Arby stuttered before passing out
"This guy, H-He passed out!" Avdol says as sweat and spit drip from his face and mouth
"He's standing, but he's unconscious!" The boy yells
"He got so nervous, he passed out" Jotaro says. We then saw Polnareff and Joseph's souls
"Mister Joestar and Polnareff's souls are coming back! We're saved!" Avdol says
"He gave up on the wager in his heart. He admitted defeat, so their souls were released" Jotaro says.
"F-Four of a kind! H-His hand was a four-of-a-kind with kings! J-Jotaro, what in the world was your hand?" Avdol asks picking up the cards
"I knew it. All or the cards I dealt him were worthless!" The boy yells. I watched Avdol fall to his knees in horror
"Even Star Platinum wouldn't be able to cheat someone like D'Arby. I managed to scare him so much, he folded, but with such a worthless hand. Good grief. If I had known, I would've freaked out" Jotaro says
"F-Freaked out? Jotaro, you wagered all that on worthless cards?!" Avdol asks. D'Arby began laughing. We then see souls come out of the book
"It appears his collection has been freed to cross over, as well" Avdol says
"Come on, everyone! Let's all play mahjong! Backgammon is a lot of fun, too, and dice games are thrilling. Though I'll beat you all!" D'Arby says laughing
"I don't think we'll be able to get Dio's secret out of him now" Avdol says
"Yeah, but he was a strong enemy. He almost beat all five of us by himself. He's really something" Jotaro says
"But he didn't" I say relieved.
"Yes, he was truly terrifying" Avdol says as we all begin walking away
"I'm not sure what's going on, but yeah" Polnareff says
"We didn't get to look good at all this time" Joseph says
