Chapter 3: Curiosity
Y/N wakes up in a room that is unknown to him. It is still cold, still dark but there is a light which implies some time near sunrise. He realizes he is on a couch with a blanket haphazardly thrown on him. A figure moves in the kitchen and there is the distinct smell of coffee.
"Finally, didn't even think you'd wake up," a grumbling voice mocked. Y/N sits up on the couch, only half-aware of the space around him before noticing Aizawa walking in with a cup of coffee. He wore a simple white t-shirt and sweatpants but that did little to lessen the harsh aura he had. If anything, it made him look more tired and distant. His posture did soften when he noticed Y/N's unresponsiveness, but rather a face of confusion and sluggishness. Aizawa sat down on the chair in front of them and set down his cup.
"You were out of it, so I took you to my home since I didn't really know where you lived and didn't trust that you'd be able to take care of yourself if you were left alone."
"Aww, someone cares about me," Y/N's words slurred. Aizawa grunted disapprovingly but sat back in his chair, analyzing Y/N as they struggled to sit up properly.
"But thank you, Aizawa," Y/N mumbled, earning a small look of gratitude from Aizawa. He moved his cup of coffee forward, offering it. Not knowing what to really do, Y/N moved to touch it but that's when Aizawa noted their hands shaking heavily.
"Your quirk takes a lot out of you, doesn't it?"
"Didn't eat properly, was nervous," Y/N mumbles as he retracts his hand into the blanket. Aizawa sighs and takes the cup of coffee in his hands, sitting on the couch next to Y/N. He brings the cups to their lips and slowly drips some in as Y/N drinks. He can't help but feel somewhat guilty. If he hadn't scoffed or made a scene, maybe they wouldn't have needed to be proven as worthy by Nezu. Maybe this could have all been avoided.
He took a look at the clock in the living room. It was nearly time to head to the school and prepare for the day. He turned to the figure who could just barely drink and let his mind wander over what would need to be done. Maybe he could ask Nezu about it.
----
Aizawa offered to drop Y/N off at the school, not like they had much of a choice since that was their only transport. They gratefully accepted and Aizawa accompanied them to the main building, noting how they walked more easily, though still with some fatigue in their actions. He'd definitely have to check with Nezu, or Recovery Girl.
"Thanks again, Aizawa, I promise I'll make it up to you", Y/N said, earning a soft smile from Aizawa as he waved dismissively. Y/N walked to the infirmary to get the duties for the day and Aizawa simply watched with a strange sense of wanting to follow you.
"I see how you're looking," cooed a loud voice. Aizawa turned around and saw Present Mic leaning against the wall, grinning ear to ear with expectation. Aizawa huffed and rolled his eyes, walking to the Principle's office for his first option.
----
"Sir, may I come in?"
Nezu affirmed and Aizawa walked into the office. Nezu was sitting at his desk, reading over reports with an increasingly furrowed brow.
"The villains seemed to do a mass attack last night. Was Y/N with you?"
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about..."
"Well, speak away then. If there's an issue, I'll do my best to fix it."
"Well, it wasn't so much an issue with the fighting. He's able to hold himself well, possibly better than most heroes with offensive quirks. What I am worried about is the quirk itself. It causes him fatigue, I had to take him to my own home and even then just sit and hope he'd wake up."
"Ah, yes, I recall reading about that in his file," Nezu opened a drawer and pulled out a thin file. He place it down on the table and paged through it before stopping.
"Operator's Quirk: Regeneration
Quirk shares a similar format to most regeneration quirks, speeding up cell renewal, but can be targeted to specific areas. Quirk requires skin-to-injury contact to be effective. Drawback of quirk is fatigue and possible loss of consciousness. More common when Operator uses quirk on self, possible redirection of body energy to healing (?). Counselor recommended an energy- and nutrient-rich diet; see the diet plan below.
Additional Notes: Quirk appears to affect the body's ability to direct energy, speeding up healing as well as immune responses in ill patients. The secondary effect of activation is the Operant receives healing themselves, possible for mass coverage or healing by proxy. Diet seems to help in mitigating operand's fatigue."
"A diet?"
"Yes, you might remember that most quirks have effects on the body. You use eyedrops, Mr. Aizawa."
"True as well. He did tell me he didn't eat yesterday because of nervousness."
"He is here?"
"Yes."
"I'll have Recovery Girl do a checkup, if that would put your mind at ease."
Aizawa was flustered, knowing that if he tried to be defensive, he'd betray something that not even he aware of:
"This isn't about my peace of mind, Sir; it's about his wellbeing."
"I'm glad you're taking an interest in his wellbeing."
Aizawa sighed, leaving the room with a final goodbye and staring off into the hallway. He couldn't help but think about Y/N, the vulnerability in their quirk. He'd speak with Recovery Girl at lunch.
----
"I don't get it, is he always like that?" Y/N asked simply. Recovery Girl was taking his vitals and writing it down in a file.
"Last I heard, he was quite surprised at your skill in fighting. As for your other question, yes. He's not the easiest to get along with, but he can be a very good friend."
Y/N's mind flashes back to the morning, when Aizawa helped him to sip the coffee that he struggled with.
"The side effect of your quirk is proportional to the damage, I assume?"
"Yes, but it is easier to heal others than myself."
"Then try not to get hurt," Recovery Girl giggled to herself. Y/N laughed in response as she took off the blood-pressure cuff and handed the file to an attendant.
"If I were you, I'd check the Support Department for long-range weapons; better to be far than close."
"I'll have to do that, it seems." Y/N mused over the scarf that Aizawa wore. The day had begun, and some of the students piled in after their first training to get their treatments. It wasn't as bad as Y/N thought it was going to be, largely just fractures and bruises. As time went on, the day started getting hotter, and Lunch seemed to be a far dream.
----
Aizawa wandered into the infirmary to see Recovery Girl sitting behind her desk and Y/N sitting near the back with a small bag of peanuts. Y/N looked up and saw Aizawa staring and turned away quickly, altering Recovery Girl to the visitor. She turned around and jumped from her chair happily greeting him.
"May I speak in private, Chiyo?"
Though concerned, Recovery Girl nodded before leading Aizawa down the hall where they could speak.
"How's he feeling?"
"Better, the peanuts seem to help, they're good for energy you know. The main issue is that his healing is proportional to the damage, which means that he must avoid major injuries in order to avoid what you had last night."
It wasn't the nicest thought, but Aizawa rather enjoyed taking care of Y/N, it gave him something that made him feel like he wasn't just an angry person but someone who could also care.
"Maybe we should contact the Support Department, see if we can't get him something more suitable than what he already wears."
"That's what I said," Recovery Girl laughed.
