Chapter 14
"I had this idea..." Jack started. We were sitting on my bed talking about what we were going to do next with the strike. "We need to fight fire with fire. We need to spread the word to more kids that are working." He said. "And how do you suppose we do that?" I asked.ย
"When Mr. Pulitzer had a 'talk' I saw a printing press he had in his basement. If we can use that to print papers and deliver them to the working kids of New York and convince them to join us we'll have thousands of kids on our side!" He explained. "That's not a bad idea." I thought for a moment. "But you know none of the newsies know how to work a printing press." I brought him back to reality. He was the dreamer and I was the one that brought him back to reality. That was how the Jack-Y/N duo worked.
"You're right... I'm sure Denton knows how to work one. We can ask him tomorrow." He said. "Great, now that we have some sort of a plan I'm going to bed." I yawned. "Alright, good night." He said walking out of the room. "Night," I replied and turned off the light.

"So do you know how to work it?" Jack asked Denton. "I think I learned how to when I first got the job..." He mumbled. "I believe I could figure it out if I see one again."ย
I smiled. "Great! We can bring you there tonight and we'll get to work." I said. Jack and Denton nodded.
"Hey Y/N!" Spot called from on top of some crates.ย
"Even in Manhattan you somehow find a throne." I chuckled. "It's not just for me." He winked at me. "I made a spot for my queen as well." He said patting the spot next to him.ย
"Did you?" I chuckled, climbing up to sit with him. "So once you get back from selling you just sit on your throne and watch people?" I asked. He nodded. "Sounds boring," I teased. He chuckled.ย
"You know if you ever come to Brooklyn we can do something else..." He turned to me. "What did you have in mind?" I giggled, turning to look in his eyes. "Something like this..." He said, cupping my face with his hand and leaning in.
"Spot!" Someone called. He groaned and pulled away. I blushed and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "I was in the middle of something!" He exclaimed. "Well, someone needs your help!" Spot rolled his eyes and jumped down.

"A diamond premium printing press...Oh Mr. Pulitzer you made a mistake abandoning this." Denton said, pulling off the sheet that was covering the press. "Woah.." I whispered. It was definitely bigger than I expected. "Alright let's get to work."
I held a big stack of papers in my hand as I wandered the streets with Spot to convince other kids to join the strike. We saw a group of little boys and little girls with ashes all over their faces. I walked up to one of the girls and crouched down to her level. "Hey cutie," I smiled at her. "Hi." She said nervously. "My friend and I were wondering if you can take this paper and take it to your friends." I handed her the paper Denton wrote. "We need you and your friends to join our strike, ok?" She nodded. "Can you read it to us?" She handed the paper back to me. I took her hand and walked to her group of friends. "This nice lady needs to tell us something." She announced. All 6 of their big curious eyes were on me. "Newsies want you to join us..." I started.
"That was tiring." I huffed, flopping on my bed. "You did great," Spot said, sitting on the edge of my bed. "I'm so tired of this whole strike stuff," I admitted. "Hey, if the strike never happened then we wouldn't be where we are." He smiled. "I guess you're right." I sighed. "When am I not?" He smirked. I threw my pillow at him. "You're annoying." We laughed. "Good night Y/N." He tossed the pillow back on my bed. "See ya tomorrow." I waved and he walked out.

All of the newsies were protesting in front of Pulitzer's office. "Give us our rights back!" I exclaimed. "This is pointless..." Someone said. I frowned. "Maybe our pape wasn't convincing enough..." Race said. "Don't give up hope yet." I looked at Spot who just shrugged. "Maybe we should just go and do what Pulitzer wants..."
Just as the newsies were about to give up, kids from all across New York came flooding in with signs. Their voices boomed across the street as they yelled and came closer to us. I smiled and watched as Mr. Pulitzer peeked out of his window, his eyes filled with fear. Then, out of nowhere, Teddy Roosevelt pulled up and stormed inside Pulitzer's office.
"Newsies prices go back to normal in the morning!" Mr. Pulitzer finally announced. Everyone cheered. "We did it!" Spot exclaimed wrapping his arms around my waist and spinning me around. I giggled and wrapped my arms around his neck. "Someone's excited." I smiled. His eyes darted from my lips to my eyes. "Uh...Spot?" He leaned in and kissed me. My eyes widened and my brain decided to stop functioning. He pulled away and frowned. "If you don't think we're ready then-" I snapped back into reality and pulled the collar of his shirt towards me and kissed him.
"You don't know how long I've been waiting to do that." He chuckled once we pulled away. "I can tell." I laughed.
"Spot! Are you coming?" Patches yelled. "I better get back to Brooklyn..."ย
I frowned. "That's it? You find your soulmate and you just leave them once the strike is over?" I muttered. "I'd rather stay here with you than go back with those idiots." He smirked. I huffed, "Hey, hey, we can visit each other. I could stay in Manhattan for a week and you can stay in Brooklyn for a week." I sighed. "Why can't you just stay here..." "Because you and me both know the boys would be like lost dogs without me." I smiled. "Fine, but if you don't visit me I'll storm over and drag you to Manhattan myself," I warned.
He chuckled, "Ok, ok. I promise I'll visit you Y/N." I smiled. "Pinky promise?" He smirked. "Pinky promise."
