chapter 10
Magne and I sat atop the ledge of an apartment building, the night air whistling through the nearly abandoned street. Buildings that reached the sky, shops that sold basic necessities, and construction sites surrounded the urban roads. The rumbling of engines sharply cut through the stillness of the chilled night as few cars lazily drove themselves home underneath the clear, starless sky.
The moon was now past its zenith, shining brightly as we searched for our target. Magne had said we could leave early in the morning if I was too tired, but I insisted that we went when the sun was down. Better there's no one around when we...
My hands started to shake again. Though I said I'd do anything to dispose of heroes, to rid ourselves of fakes... I still don't think I can... How could I possibly take... another person's life...?
Thankfully, Magne didn't notice my sudden surge of fear as her eyes surveyed the shops. The bright moon reflected in her dark sunglasses as she securely held her weapon, its stone appearance as intimidating as Magne herself.Β
At one end of her magnet was a blue 'S' and a red 'N' on the other, from which I guessed meant South and North. Magne still hadn't told me anything about her quirk, so my strategies were rather limited. I guess I'll have to think of something when the time comes...
The thought alone made me anxious.
We'd had no way of knowing where Electric Arrow could possibly be, so we jumped around from building to building in Kudo Prefecture, where his hero agency is located.
Kurogiri's training has helped me a lot with mobility, but there still isn't much else I can do. Granted, my punches have gotten stronger and my battle strategies have developed a bit, but I have little to no combat experience. That's why I was surprised that I was assigned a mission so soon, and an assassination one at that. I have no idea how I can be of any use to Magne in a one-on-one fight like this.
Hoping that everyone will see that I can support their efforts, that I can be useful, I tasked myself with being the one to locate Electric Arrow first.
"Let's try over here," Magne announced as she swiftly made a 10-foot leap from the apartment we'd been settling on for the past twenty minutes to another one. Surprisingly, I followed her with ease, the midnight breeze making my green hair fly in the slightest as I landed gracefully on the roof next to Magne.
I stood up and inched to the edge of the building, peering over the safety railing with a sort of curiousness about it. I gripped the sturdy fencing, feeling the sheer coldness of the rusty metal underneath my warm fingertips. The feeling was familiar and, unexpectedly, the memory of that numbing night on the rooftop crept its way back into my brain, despite how much I'd tried to push it out.
The remembrance haunted my every move. It never seemed to leave.
It was most clear in the night, like a cursed shadow that can exist without the warmth of light. No matter how much I'd tried to convince myself that I was past that moment, past that feeling of wanting to die... it never did work. Underneath all my brief thoughts is where it lies, whispering to me, telling me things that have a mind of its own.
Ignoring the thoughts don't work as much anymore... God knows I can never hope to confront them... so this is where fate has led me. The once sweet, young freckled boy, who's apparently gone missing, is now a part of a villain organization set on destroying All Might. Set on destroying the faith that the population has placed in heroes. Set on destroying those who've betrayed me. Set on destroying those who've never thought I deserved human respect.
Fate wants me to destroy it all.
And I'd thought it worked out well. So yes, fate, I'll do whatever you wish me to do. If it was you who led Kurogiri to me before I had the chance to end it all, if it was you... I'll take life as it comes. As long as it's a good distraction, something that can lead my troublesome thoughts astray-- confuse them somehow. I'll fulfill the role fate has given me.
With the metal railing piercing my palms, I forced my eyes down upon Kazuichi Street, the hub of Kudo Prefecture. The road was nearly deserted and barren, except for a few cars surrounded around a small establishment directly in front of the apartment building Magne and I surveyed from. Bright, colorful lights emanated from the place as playful booming music echoed across streets on either side.
My green eyes found a large wooden sign on the side of the structure that said in thick, bold letters:
α΄Κα΄ Κα΄α΄Κ Κα΄Κ
I pointed to the pub, the only place in the whole of Kudo Prefecture that was open, much less had laughing and merriment sounding from it.
"He has to be there," I said.
I refused to believe it though-- refused to accept that a hero gladly spent his time in a place like this.Β
Once the new generation of heroes made their debuts in society, people had realized that Electric Arrow really wasn't all that. The easy street shoplifters he'd caught paled in comparison to the underworld mob bosses others captured, and the number of his arrests steadily declined, until there was not enough to be recognized as an actual, paid hero.
Reporters who covered the mystery of Electric Arrow's 'downfall' broadcasted that, though he was in no position to demand so, he would only accept missions that fit his high standards and had a good sum of money supporting them.
As one might expect, he didn't get many jobs and practically ended up unemployed; the articles I'd read last night only confirmed that. Much wasn't known about Electric Arrow once he'd fallen out of popularity amongst society-- but is this really what he's been doing? Drinking, grinding against a bunch of women, passing out??
The thought made my blood boil with disbelief.
Just then, with the bell ringing soundly from all directions, out from the bar came a middle-aged man who, contrary to what one may think, was still in pretty good shape. He wore a laundered, red flannel shirt, and simple black jeans. I was about to dismiss his obvious drunkenness before I took a look at his face-- and saw that he fit the descriptions and images Magne and I were given of our target.
He had a long face and slicked brown hair that hid traces of gray roots. His squinty light eyes ran all over the young girl he had around his arm as he pulled her alarmingly close to him. He laughed randomly at something the girl hadn't thought funny as she, though tipsy herself-- if her stumbling was any indication-- tried to free herself from the man's strong grip and reeking alcohol breath.
He groped roughly at her legs, his hand slipping up her slim black dress, his other hand cupping the girl's waist as she tried unsuccessfully to push him away.
I staggered backwards.
Just having the sight in front of me made me want to vomit.
This man calls himself a hero? Is this what all heroes are like? Are all they all this shitty? Was I right to come here? Should I back out? Can I even do this?
Millions of doubts and regrets swirled around my head, leaving my face blank and uncertain-- until there was one thought that made itself painfully clear amongst the rest.
Electric Arrow must be executed.
Magne smirked excitedly, giving a warm giggle.
"Target acquired."Β
