Chapter Twenty-one: Full Moon

The wind howled through the trees as Lyra made her way across the grounds, her footsteps silent on the cold earth. She had followed the Marauders under the cover of night, feeling an uneasy curiosity gnawing at her. Something was happening tonight—something important—and she couldn't ignore the pull to find out what.

The Whomping Willow loomed ahead, its branches twisting like the arms of some ancient creature. The Marauders had gathered near the base, their forms huddled together in quiet conversation, but Lyra stayed hidden behind a large oak, watching them intently. The moon was high in the sky, its eerie light casting shadows across the field. She could feel the tension in the air, thick and palpable.

Remus stood alone in the center of the clearing, his shoulders tense and his face drawn with strain. Lyra's heart quickened as she saw how pale he was, his eyes haunted, almost as if he were preparing for something awful. James and Sirius were standing nearby, but they were silent, their expressions unreadable. Peter was lingering slightly behind them, his eyes darting nervously between the others.

"Remus," James said quietly, his voice filled with concern. "We're here, mate. We've got your back. Just like always."

Remus nodded faintly, but Lyra could see the doubt in his eyes. He didn't look like he was ready for what was coming. "I can feel it," he said hoarsely. "It's... it's getting harder. I don't know how much longer I can control it."

Sirius stepped forward, his usual confidence faltering just slightly. "You don't have to do this alone, Moony," he said. "We're with you. You know that."

Remus clenched his fists, his face contorted in pain. Lyra felt a chill run through her, though she couldn't tear herself away from the scene. What was happening?

And then, the transformation began.

Remus's body trembled violently, his spine arching in a way that couldn't have been natural. His skin rippled, his bones cracking as his body expanded and reshaped itself. Lyra's breath caught in her throat as fur sprouted from his skin in dark patches, his face elongating and twisting in agony. He collapsed to the ground as his body continued to change, his clothing ripping apart in the process.

Her eyes widened in horror as she watched him lose control completely. The transformation was painful—terrifying to witness—and within seconds, Remus was no longer the friend she knew. He had become a massive, snarling werewolf.

Lyra stepped backward, her heart racing. She knew Remus was a werewolf, but seeing it firsthand, seeing him lose all control, shook her to her core. This wasn't the quiet, kind-hearted boy she had spent time with. This was a beast, driven by instincts far stronger than human reasoning.

Sirius and James stepped forward, but not to run. They were calm, their faces filled with determination. "We've got you, Moony," Sirius said, his voice low but firm. "We won't let you hurt anyone."

Lyra didn't know what to do. Should she run? Should she help? She stood frozen, her feet rooted to the spot, as James and Sirius quickly prepared themselves. They knew this routine—Lyra had no idea how long it had been going on, but they were used to this. James and Sirius both took a few steps back from the still-transforming Remus, and Peter, too, kept his distance, his face pale with concern.

And then, to Lyra's shock, something incredible happened. James and Sirius, in the midst of the chaos, both began to shift. Their bodies shimmered with magic, morphing into animals before her eyes. James's transformation was seamless, his body growing into a majestic stag with wide, sweeping antlers. Sirius's change was a bit rougher but no less spectacular, his form turning into a large, black dog.

Lyra couldn't take her eyes off them. The Marauders—James, Sirius, and Peter—were Animagi. She had suspected something was off, but now the truth was laid bare before her. They had been hiding this from her, and for some reason, that hurt more than she expected.

Remus, now fully transformed, let out a deep, guttural growl. His golden eyes glinted in the moonlight, but there was no recognition of his friends in them—just the beast. James, as the stag, moved closer, keeping himself between Remus and the rest of the group. Sirius, in his dog form, barked sharply, trying to draw the werewolf's attention away from the others.

Lyra watched, her breath coming in short gasps as she tried to comprehend what she was witnessing. The Marauders were doing everything they could to protect Remus, to make sure he didn't hurt anyone, but there was no denying the fear she felt. They had never told her about this. Never warned her what was happening tonight or what they were truly capable of.

After what felt like an eternity, the transformation began to reverse. Remus's form shrank and shifted back to human form, his body trembling as the last remnants of the wolf faded away. He lay there, breathing heavily, his face a mask of exhaustion and pain. James and Sirius, their animal forms flickering out, moved swiftly to his side.

Lyra didn't know what to say. She had no words as she stood there, feeling a whirlwind of emotions: betrayal, confusion, and a strange sadness she couldn't quite place. She had trusted them—she had shared her own secrets with them. And yet, they had kept this from her.

Sirius was the first to notice her standing in the distance, still hidden behind the oak tree. His eyes widened, and he quickly stood, making his way over to her.

"Lyra..." he began, his voice strained. "You shouldn't have seen that. It wasn't meant for you to know."

Lyra shook her head, her heart heavy. "Why? Why didn't you tell me? Why keep this a secret from me when I told you about my family—about my father?"

Sirius looked down, guilt evident in his eyes. "It wasn't about not trusting you. It's... it's just dangerous. We didn't want to burden you with all of it. It's a lot, and we didn't think you should carry that weight, too."

Lyra felt a pang in her chest. "But I trusted you," she said softly. "I thought we were in this together."

Remus, now fully human again, looked up at her, his face pale and weary. "We should've told you. I'm sorry," he whispered. "But we never meant to hide this from you. You've always been a part of our group, and we wanted to protect you from this... darkness."

James, who had remained a few steps behind, added quietly, "No more secrets, Lyra. We should've been honest with you."

Lyra stood in silence for a long moment, absorbing their words. It wasn't just the transformation that shook her—it was the feeling of being left out, of not being trusted with something this important. Slowly, she took a deep breath, pushing the hurt aside.

"I need time," she said softly, her voice steady. "Time to process all of this. But I need you to understand that I don't want to be kept in the dark. We're all in this together, right?"

Sirius nodded solemnly. "We promise. No more secrets."
