48. I don't like the smell of Ghee

If someone ever asks me why I would prefer to live in Kaliyug, it's because we won't take an infinite amount of time to travel from the city to it's outskirts....

Eramnesia... They say it's what you feel when you hope to be born in another era.

To say my wish came true would be an understatement, but moving for three days by a chariot is simply painful.

" How much longer! " I cried out, sitting in my rath with Yudhishthir.

"Priye, you've asked for the fifth time in 15 minutes.. My answer remains the same. 2 more hours. " He sighed, pulling me into a hug.

" I swear. The one invention we need. A car. "

" Why don't you do it? I'm sure people will benefit. " He said, chuckling.

"Haan haan. Mechanic bante ghoomon mein yahan. Mechanics hi padhni hoti to mechanical engineering na padti college mein.. Wo bhi karne ko nahi mila. " ( Of course. That's all i should do right? Become a mechanic. If I wanted to do that, I would have taken mechanical engineering in college. Now I can't even do that. )

That made me realise what a life I was living here. I'd become akin to a politician than a chemical nerd. It made me sad. All the dreams I had seen for myself, studying, going to college, doing things that I couldn't't even imagine in the labs. All that was lost here.

"What happened? You look sad. " I heard.

"What? No no. I'm not sad. " I said, smiling.

"How many times I must tell you not to lie to me? "

The thing is, in this respect I must lie to you. You don't understand. If I tell you why, then you'll feel sad, thinking you bringing me here shattered my dreams. When it's not your fault. I chose to come here. But I didn't pay attention to the consequences.

" I'm not lying. Truly, the only reason I'm sad is at the speed with which we are moving. " I whined. Got to act huh?

"Alright. But please tell me if something is wrong. Alright? " He said,a warm smile adorned his face.

"Yes, alright. "

These had been the longest two hours of my life and no one was more grateful than me to finally get down from that cursed chariot.

But as we did get down, we were greeted by a family.

"Pranipat Yuvraj, Yuvrani. Raajmata, Kumar. " He greeted.

"Who's he Arya? "

" I am Purochan Yuvrani, I am the one who has had the immense honour to construct this home for you. " He smiled.

He gave me the creeps.

"Al-alright. I'm grateful for your hardwork. " I added, moving to stand next to mata.

" Shall we kumar? "

We entered the palace, as he called it. It had been illuminated by a series of reflections, each placed at the perfect angles to allow the light of the moon to be reflected at the exact angles to allow maximum- I think you get my point.

" This is an engineering masterpiece Purochan. " Nakul muttered, while Sahdev, and I hung back.

" Sahdev... Don't you think this place smells unusual. " I asked, closing my nose. I never liked the smell of ghee. When ma used to boil of the malai in the fridge to get the ghee, I used to stay clear of the kitchen, even if I felt like I would die out of hunger.

" Ji bhabhishree. The smell is unusual,as well as the fact that, I admit, this truly is a wonderful design, rather ingenious, but how can one have light in the palace on the amavasya?"

His question truly forced me to think more. Meanwhile, mata was giving Purochan a diya to light.

" Yudhishthir. I need to speak to you. Alone. It's urgent. " I whispered, while he looked at me confused.

"Why, is there something not to your liking here? " He asked, which drew the other's attention to us.

"Putri is something wrong? "

"Nahi mata. It's just, I am tired from the journey and so I asked Arya where we would be staying. " I tried, smiling.

"Alright. But be patient for a little while longer putri, we'll reach the room soon. " She said, blessing me  with a hand on my head.

Sitting in the room allotted to us taught me two things.

One, I was right, this place does smell of ghee for some idiotic reason.

Two, if what Sahdev said is true, than there is more to this story than we think.

" What is my beautiful wife thinking? " Yudhishthir adked, sitting by my side.

" I need to tell you something. "

"What is it. Say it freely. " He said, smiling.

"Did you use the ghee moisturizer before coming? The shatdhuta? "

"No. I never use one. You know that. "

"I do... But it's getting colder so I just thought.... But then, why is the whole room, rather the whole palace stinking of ghee? "

"No idea... Maybe you used it? "

"If I had I wouldn't ask you... I think there is something seriously wrong here Yudhishthir. Go bring the arti diya, or any diya here. " I said, now my brain running faster than light.

" But -"

"Please! And go bring Sahdev along with you -"

" No need bhabhishree, I'm already here. We were right. " He said, walking in with his own diya.

"What do you mean Sahdev? You were right? " Yudhishthir asked calmly.

" Jyeshth, but first I must do it in front of you both, to confirm if I am not actually hallucinating, that what I thought is true. " He said, moving to one corner of the room, where we saw him try and light one of the pillars on fire.

"Sahdev, have you read to many books now to think you need to burn down pillars? For that you need brawn-"

" Bheem, maun. "Yudhishthir ordered, while the rest of them came in, other than mata.

We watched, as the pillar quickly began to melt and then immediately caught fire.

" Sahdev! " Arjun shouted, running to him when we noticed Sahdev's angvastr catching fire off the dripping material from the walls. He stepped on the cloth to dowse the fire, while Nakul ran in with a handful of sand to do the same.

Me and Arjun must have reached the same conclusion.

"Lakh." We said, simultaneously. (Lac. The material. Commonly used to make jewelleries.)

" Lakh? Why is there lakh in the building materials. " Nakul asked.

" Lakh is incredibly flammable Nakul." Arjun said, looking at him, while everyone in the room tried to figure out why.

Which is when, " Arre, I heard mamashree is the one who suggested this trip to mata. " Bheem said.

"But didn't Tajshree say that? " Yudhishthir asked.

Oh no.... Oh no no no no...

" He did, but i asked him who so suddenly, so he said mamashree said he had a correspondent in Varnavart who told him about how the people here miss pitashree. Bheem finished.

"It didn't seem unusual to me then, but it does now. " He added, while everyone thought hard.

" Wouldn't we get to know at one point? If their plan is to burn us all alive, then he must know that Arjun is competwnt enough to fire a varunastr while we leave. " I asked.

" He must have thought something bhabhishree, for mamashree is very thorough with his planning. What could be the best way to say that we died in an accident and still have his hands clean at all instances. " Arjun wondered aloud, when Bheem said angrily, " Poison. They're going to poison our food. "

"Why would you think this way Bheem? Why would mamashree poison us? " Yudhishthir asked and i looked at him incredulously.

" He tried the same thing earlier... Don't you remember Jyeshth? When they posioned me! " Bheem raged, as his anger nearly shook the room.

"Yes, but we were children-"

" Nothing. We must tell mata and leave immediately-"

"No one is going anywhere. If they want us to die, we'll die. " Said the voice of a broken woman in the corridor, tears cascading down her beautiful face.

Well, that was fast. I understand that they did live in Varnavart for a while... I know... But there is a reason I did this on the first day itself... You'll see.

Anyways, tell me how it was and do vote .

Much love
