117. Home?
While returning back to Indraprasth, I saw Abhi's head loll against Yudhishthir's shoulder, his silent snores driving peals of giggles from Madhu, who found another human her age entirely too fascinating.
" And, what else did you do in Dwarika? " I asked her , she sat in front of me, telling me animated tales of her stay in the beautiful city.
" And then mamashree Krishn killed Narkasur with mamishree Satyabhama, returning all the kidnapped women back, but they said, 'we won't be respected' , don't know what that means, but the mamashree said he'll marry them all! All sixteen thousand of them! " She said, her eyes were huge rounds of shock.
" One is enough... Sixteen thousand?" Yudhishthir murmured, his eyes reflecting a certain fear.
" Why dear husband, you think I am a burden? " I asked sweetly as Madhu giggled. I'm not sure if she understands, but I am sure she knows when her father is being made fun of.
" I never meant - there's no point. I loose either way, " He sighed, a lazy smile on his lips as he pressed a kiss to Abhi's head.
" So, what's our plan? Are the others on their way? " I asked and he shook his head.
" No? "
" No, they are already there, " He said, eyes sharp.
" You knew they would have no option but to give in? " I asked, referencing the stars of Keeping up with the Kurus .
" No, I believe in you, " He said, eyes shining.
" Mumma, can I sleep? " Madhu asked suddenly, squatting down to her haunches, shifting around on the chariot floor to put her head against my thighs.
" You don't need to ask putri, sleep if you wish, " Yudhishthir frowned and she laughed.
" But I need to ask! " She said, popping one eye open, " If we're too close to home, I don't want to be woken up from my sleep, " She sighed, a smile curling her lips as I pat her head, softly watching as her eyes dropped close.
" Well, do you want to sleep too? " Yudhishthir asked chukling and I shook my head, " I don't want to sleep, I've been having weird dreams again, " I said and he frowned.
" Why didn't you tell me? " He asked, extending one hand to catch hold of my own, running his thumb over it.
" It's just bad dreams Dharma, you don't need to worry, " I muttered, holding his hand.
" I'll always worry for you, sleep, I'll not let them harm you, " He said softly.
" It's fine, I'm not sleepy either, " I said, watching as the tallest tower of Indraprasth came to light, gleaming in the last rays of sunshine.
When the days of the kingdom exhausted us beyond measure, me and Yudhishthir would go up to the towers and talk. Just talk endlessly, resting against the marble obelisk.
" We're here," Yudhishthir said, my daydreams made me forget about the present as I saw the doors of Indraprasth open.
As we reached, I lightly shook Madhu, her eyes snapped open, as if being scared to death.
Settling back onto our earth, our home made me more nostalgic than necessary, my eyes tearing up at the thought as I looked at my family at the doors.
" Welcome Samrat, Samragyi, Kumar, Kumari, " Vrushali welcomed us, much to my surprise as I saw her husband behind her, admiring us.
I also saw another woman standing next to Karn, one I had never met before.
" Jyeshth, may we know who that is?" Yudhishthir asked my question for me as we made our way in, Mini and Madhu chatting over... After being away for one day..
" That, putr is my wife, Padmavati, " He said, looking at her with love.
" Where are you from Devi? " I asked, quelling my slight annoyance at his marriage, though it seems I can't help it. I saw Krishn marry eight. Oh and now sixteen thousand more. Then I saw Arjun marry four others....
For whatever reason they may be.
" I am from Aswawari Samragyi, " She answered timidly and I smiled, walking up to her to pull her in a hug.
" You're welcome to our family, I trust you're being looked after well?" I asked, noticing we were not too far apart in age.
" Yes Samragyi, " She said when I laughed, " You can call me by my name. Sagarika is fine. Or Karali if you want, my sisters call me that. Or even Saag. That's what ny brother calls me, " I reassured her.
" Shall we -"
" Bhabhishree! Why don't we all sleep in the main hall today, a family sleep over as you called it. Just like a few years ago! " Nakul suggested and I frowned.
" Nakul, many of us will be uncomfortable in front of the brothers of our husbands -"
" We'll make curtains, we'll make sure everyone has their privacy too, tents. Come on bhabhishree, please!" Arjun said, making me far too suspicious.
" Well, if the others are alright with it, "
" We're fine! " Came sudden responses from everyone other than us four, " Okay, well, let's go then. " Sahdev said, ushering us in.
" Dasi, ease bring over strong logs, a few curtains, plenty of bed covers and enough pillows for us all, " Mini said.
" But -" Yudhishthir began and I stopped him.
" They're hiding something, we'll check it later once everyone's asleep, " I whispered to him and he nodded.
While the arrangements were made, leading to far more pillow fights than I can imagine, we all sat down in the middle, settling for food.
" Are you quite sure you want to sleep here? " I asked again and they all shook their heads in agreement, but I saw Mini keeping her head against Nakul's shoulder, her fists tight.
" Mini? All fine? " I asked sweetly, placing my hand on her shoulder.
" Haan didi, bas thak gayi, sari dard kar raha hai, " ( Yes didi, I'm just tired, having a headache, ) She winced her eyes.
" Oh, come I'll help, I give excellent head massages, " I said, shifting her head towards me, while the others were busy in their own conversations.
" Tu bhool rahi hai, gyarah saal ho ya hazar, mujhe pata hai tu jhooth kab bol rahi hai. Sach bata, kya kand hua hai yahan, " ( You forget, be it eleven years or a thousand, I know when you're hiding something, or lying. Tell me, what catastrophe has taken place here, ) I whispered to her and she shook her head softly.
" Nothing didi, don't worry, " She said, getting back up.
" Alright then, shall we sleep? " I asked, moving to slip into my tent, watching Yudhishthir do the same as we curled the children between us, watching as they regained their sleep.
Even I felt myself dosing off, might have, when I felt a soft hand at my shoulder.
" Do you want to rest? I would have gone on my own but I wanted you to come along, " Yudhishthir murmured and I nodded, carefully slipping my hand from under Abhi's head as I got up, moving out of the tent. We saw how all of them were fast asleep, loud snores from Bheem's tent made their way into my ears.
" Come, " Yudhishthir urged, running us out of the main hall.
" Where to? " I asked him, " To our rooms. " He answered and I followed him, watching as he and I took silent steps, gemtly making it to our room.
Before we could even enter, I could smell it.
Alcohol. Far too much of it.
" Yudhishthir, " I said, grabbing hold of his hand and he held it tightly, pushing the doors open.
" You! " I said, my eyes landing on the one in the room, shock and disbelief running through me as I surveyed the surroundings.
