Chapter 19
"Void," I breathed.
Void's lips curled into a smirk.
"Y/n," he said, his voice sending shivers down my spine. "I've been waiting to have you alone for a long time now."
My breath hitched at his words. I stumbled back a step, terrified. This couldn't be happening. I was safe. I was supposed to be safe.
Void took a step forward and I threw out my hand to stop him.
"Stop!" I said, my voice trembling.
Void tilted his head, looking at me with those brown eyes I used to know so well.
"Tut, tut. You should know better than to threaten me," he said, and took another step forward.
I was violently shaking. He was staring at me with a smirk on his face. Fear clawed at my throat. I had to get out of here. I had to escape. I couldn't let him take me. I tried to light a fire, visualising a giant flame leaping up and protecting me from Void, but nothing happened.
I tried again, and a measly flicker of fire appeared in my hand before extinguishing in smoke. Void smirked and quickened his pace.
I turned around, about to run when Void's hand clamped on my wrist, his grip unforgiving. He pulled me towards him, so my back was against his chest.
I stood there, frozen, as Void leaned in, his lips brushing my ear.
"You can't escape from me darling," he whispered. I took a deep breath, willing myself to stop shaking. Void laughed softly. "We're going to have such fun together."
Then everything went black.
. . .
I cracked open my eyes groggily, trying to figure out where I was. I was in an uncomfortable seating position, and there was a gag in my mouth. My eyes flew open the rest of the way when I remembered what had happened before I'd woken up. I looked around and found myself in an apartment. I realised with a jolt it was the apartment the Blackout party had been held in. I looked down, finding my hands tied tightly with rope.
Void was also there, leaning against the table. When I looked to him, his gaze slid to mine, almost as if he could sense my stare.
I averted my gaze, staring at the floor, and wondered whether my powers would work now and if I should try to burn the ropes binding me. I took a deep breath, focusing on making a small spark of fire to discreetly burn the ties away, when Void spoke.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," he said, his voice ringing out in the empty apartment.
I jerked my head up to look at him, my heart pounding in my chest. Void smirked.
"If you burn those ties," Void continued, his voice sickly sweet, "your friends pay the price."
I stared up at him from the floor, fear settling in my gut. Void took a few steps towards me, and I flinched, trying to move away.
Void frowned. "We'll have to fix that."
He walked away from me and turned to look out the window, not even giving me a second glance. I kept my face blank, hiding the confusion I was feeling. What did he mean by that? What was he planning?
My thoughts trailed to my parents and how I hadn't asked them about this. It was obvious they knew what was going on, but I hadn't gotton a chance to ask them about any of it because Scott needed to make sure I was protected. So much for that.
I was on one side of the room, and I couldn't see the door to the apartment, but I could definitely hear it. The door screeched open, and hope blossomed in my chest. Had the others come for me? Was I going to be saved?
Void, who had been looking out the window, glanced at me sideways and smirked at me. I looked away, noticing the sunset that was about to happen. After that would mean darkness, and that meant the Oni would come.
Void turned around slowly and looked at whoever had entered the room.
"Hi dad," he said, his voice changed. No longer was he Void, but Stiles.
My heart skipped a beat at his words. Noah was here. I nearly cried in relief. I got ready to start screaming through the gag, but Void sent me a warning look, making me shrink back and stay quiet.
He looked back to Noah, pretending to be Stiles.
I assumed that Noah brought handcuffs out of his pockets, because Void's next words were,
"You want to handcuff me?"
"If my son is still here," Noah said, "if there's still a part of him standing here in front of me, then he'll put these on willingly and he'll tell us where Y/n is, because he knows I'm here to protect him, from himself and from others."
Noah had walked close enough to Void that I could now see him, because Void would never put me out of his sight or reach. I cringed at the thought.
Void looked down at his hands as he slowly raised them, his expression forlorn. Noah put the handcuffs around his wrists silently, all the while I willed him to look at me, to notice me tied up only a few metres away.
"Where's Y/n?" Noah asked quietly. Void tilted his head, his forlorn expression replaced with a blank mask. "You're not my son," Noah realised.
Void shook his head and jerked his wrists apart, breaking the handcuffs easily.
"And as for Y/n," Void drawled. "I don't see why I should tell you where she is since she's mine."
I flinched.
I heard three other pairs of steps enter the apartment and assumed they belonged to Allison, Derek, and Chris.
"I think you'll find the only person who owns Y/n is herself and no one else, especially you," Allison said, her voice a comfort.
Void's expression turned into one of rage for a spilt second before he covered it up with the same blank mask, but it was obvious he hadn't liked what Allison had said.
I heard footsteps and then Allison walked into view, her back to me as she held up a taser. Void looked at her with a smirk, and Allison shot the taser.
Instantly, Void caught the two wires, his smirk gone. He threw the taser aside and it landed on the floor with a violent clatter.
Derek growled, fangs replacing his teeth as he ran at Void. Void caught his arm and twisted it backwards, moving forward so he could slam Derek's head on the table. Void then grabbed Derek and threw him across the room and into a pillar.
There was a click, and my attention was taken away from Derek by Chris who was pointing a gun at Void's head. Void turned his head to face the gun and he looked at Chris with an amused expression.
"Argent, listen to me. Don't do this," Noah warned, taking a step towards Chris.
"Why not?" Chris asked, not taking his eyes off Void. "I've done it before. Werewolves, Berserkers. I can easily add a Nogitsune to the list."
As quick as lightning, Noah had his own gun out, pointed at Chris. Void looked pleasantly surprised by this and sent me a wink so quick I nearly missed it.
That was when Allison spotted me behind her. Her eyes went wide as she glanced at Void before back at me, understanding filtering across her face. It seemed she also realised that Void couldn't bare the thought of me out of his reach.
"You're not going to shoot my son," Noah said to Chris.
Slowly, Allison started creeping backwards towards me, one small shuffle at a time.
"You said it yourself Sherriff. That's not your son," Chris said.
By now, Derek, who was still on the floor, had also noticed me sitting there and subtly motioned for me to use my powers.
"Dad, he's going to shoot me," Void said, once again pretending to be Stiles. "He's going to kill me dad."
"Don't listen to him," Chris snapped.
I took a deep breathe, attempting to burn the ropes, but I couldn't. I was too scared of Void, too afraid of what he'd do if I disobeyed him.
"Put it down," Noah ordered. "Now! Do it! Put the gun down!"
Void looked to Chris.
"Pull the trigger. Come on."
Allison stopped moving, distracted by the scene happening in front of her.
I tried to ignore it, focusing on deep breaths, and trying to get my powers to work. It seemed fear wasn't a good emotion to use my powers with. I didn't want to use my powers because he said he'd hurt my friends, but since he threw Derek across the room I figured he'd hurt them anyway.
"Listen to me," Noah yelled at Chris. "You put the gun down now!"
"Shoot me," Void said.
"Put the gun down now!"
"Shoot me!"
"Put the damn gun down!"
I took a deep breathe, shoving down my fears and reaching a point of clear clarity.
"Shoot me!" Void screamed.
"Argent, you put it down! Put it down!"
I burnt the ropes binding me away just as the sun went down. Instantly, using my powers sent a strong wave of satisfaction through me, and I wasn't so scared anymore.
"Stop!" Allison yelled. "Stop it! This is exactly what he wants!"
"Not exactly," Void said, sending a pointed look at me as if he knew I burnt the ropes away.
I stared right back at him.
"I was kind of hoping Scott was here," Void continued, tearing his gaze from me almost reluctantly.
Allison gestured for me to get up and stand behind her, which I did, feeling my nerves jittering and my fear heightening.
Void glared at Allison who was holding onto my arm, the look so full of hatred my knees went weak.
"And I was also hoping people would keep their hands off what's mine."
I cringed as I felt a shiver go down my spine at his words. Chris, Noah, Allison, and Derek all turned to look at me, making me feel even worse.
"I'm glad you've got you guns out though," Void said, taking the attention away from me, "but you're not here to kill me."
He turned around to face the window, and the Oni appeared in front of me. I stumbled back a step, wide eyed as I stared at the demons. I'd heard about them and seen drawings of them, but I'd never seen them in real life.
They were figures of darkness. They had materialised out of shadows and wore pitch black robes and hoods. They wore masks of a lighter shade of black, and there were pinpricks of firefly green floating in darkness where their eyes were supposed to be.
"You're here to protect me," Void finished, walking beside Noah and Chris.
He looked to me and motioned for me to follow him, but I didn't, shuffling closer to Allison who held me tighter.
Void's eyes narrowed at that, but before he could do anything, two Oni appeared behind him. Allison cast me a worried glance before telling me to stay there and running off to help keep the Oni at bay with Derek, all four of them circling Void.
Again, I watched Void gesture for me to go to him and I shook my head vigorously. He raised his eyebrows, amused.
Lightning fast, Void appeared in front of me, grabbing both my wrists and moving back behind Noah and Chris, taking me with him.
"Let go of her!" Allison cried when she noticed me.
"You should really focus on keeping the Oni at bay," Void replied.
Right on cue, an Oni slashed his sword at Allison, and she jumped out of the way, the sword inches from her stomach.
Void's arms were around my waist as he pulled me closer to him, our bodies touching. I didn't push him away though; I was too preoccupied with the fight unravelling before me.
I could tell the others wouldn't be able to hold them off much longer, with only one of them being supernatural, and I wondered what to do.
That was when I remembered the book I read at Allison's, and how I could make a shield of fire with my power. If I could use that to circle Void and I, I might be able to hold them off until they left.
I took a deep breath, focusing on my power and pushing myself away from Void. Void looked at me with mild confusion on his face, and I yelled out to my friends to step back, which they did, however hesitantly.
I closed my eyes and lifted up my hands, imagining a roaring flame appear around Void and I. When I opened my eyes I was assaulted with the brightness of the fire as it burned around us. I waited a few seconds in tense silence, wondering if the Oni would be able to get through, but when nothing happened, I let out a relieved sigh.
There were muffled gasps and yells from the other side of the flame, but the raging fire drowned out most of the noise.
Then suddenly, I could feel the Oni fighting against my flame. It was the strangest sensation, like there was a pressure on my chest, and while it was mildly uncomfortable, it didn't hurt.
I held the circle of flame, ignoring Void's presence, and closing my eyes. After a while, I felt myself beginning to tire. My shoulders sagged, and the fire started to droop lower. The pressure on my chest became more intense, bordering on pain. It was obvious my energy was depleting.
Void noticed and took a step towards me.
"Stay back," I warned him, the sudden spark of fear inside me making the flame around us grow a tiny bit higher.
"Your energy is depleting. Soon you'll be completely drained of power, and I'll be killed. If you want to keep this circle of flame up, you need to restore your energy, and body heat is a highly recommended way of doing that," Void stated as his lips curled into a cruel smile.
I stared at him, aghast. He was right of course, and that's what made it more horrible. Void took another step forward, and when I didn't do anything, he grinned, getting rid of all the space between us.
I tried not to flinch as I felt his arms snake around my waist and pull me to him, positive I would feel my skin crawling when he touched me.
Instead, I felt refreshed, and as the pressure on my chest eased I had to fight the urge to voice my pleasure. Void noticed and his grin turned smug as he pulled me closer.
As I focused on keeping the shield up and around us, Void trailed his hand up my body until it rested at the back of my neck, just above my shoulder blades.
Suddenly, where his hand was touching my neck, there was a burning sensation and I balked. I tried to pull away, but Void's grip tightened.
"Not yet, darling," he whispered.
I closed my eyes, willing the burning to stop. Instead, it only got worse, and I started leaning on Void for support. Just when I thought I couldn't take it anymore, the pain stopped. Void took his hand away, but I could sense something there. I wasn't sure what, but something had changed.
Slowly, my eyes fluttered open, and the first thing I took note of was how close out bodies were. I could feel his breath on my neck as he leaned away, a seductive smirk on his face.
I felt my throat close up as Void licked his lips and started to leaned in. I was shocked to feel the want coursing through my veins. I wanted him to get rid of the space between us. I wanted him to press his lips against mine. I wanted to feel his hands roam my body, and so much more.
He was so close now I could feel his breath fanning on my lips. His fingers were tapping along my waist, causing a strange sensation to go through me, and my eyes fluttered closed.
I was discreetly aware of the pressure that had completely been erased from my chest, meaning that the Oni must have stopped their onslaught. That was what had brought me out of my thoughts, and whatever was happening between Void and I.
Panicked, I took down the shield of flame, hoping to stop Void from doing whatever he was about to do, even though some part of me wanted him to continue.
When the fire diminished, the Oni were gone, as well as Void, the ghosts of his hands trailing my body.
Allison ran up to me, enveloping me into a hug. I blinked, caught off guard, but hugged her back just as tightly.
"Are you okay?" she asked me once she pulled away.
I nodded. "Yeah, I think so."
The door to the apartment opened and Scott and Kira were both there, panting, as if they'd run all the way here.
When Kira spotted me, it was her turn to literally sprint towards me and suffocate me in the tightest hug known to man.
"What happened?" Scott asked once Kira pulled away. She still held my hand though, as if scared I'd disappear if she ever let go.
"The Oni disappeared. They literally just vanished," Allison said.
Noah glanced at me before saying, "so did Stiles."
