Chapter 11
I hid behind a wall and quickly peeked at Kira's parents. Why were they here this late at night? Why were they here at all?
"The Oni are hunting, and, thanks to Carol, they are stronger than usual," I heard Kira's mum say.
"Hopefully they'll catch it soon," was my mother's reply.
There was so much to unpack in those two sentences alone and I already felt my head spinning. The Oni? What the hell are they? Were they people? An organisation, maybe? And why were they hunting? More importantly, what were they hunting? They'd said 'it'. Did that mean whatever they were trying to catch wasn't a person? Was it an animal? And how did my mother help the Oni things become stronger than usual? Was she- was there a chance she was like me?
There were too many questions and not enough answers. I peeked out from behind the wall again, but this time my mother noticed me.
Crap.
I turned around and ran upstairs, taking care not to make much noise, and into my room, closing the door behind me. I cursed myself for getting caught and slumped on my bed. I cursed myself some more when I heard the front door open and close, probably the Yukimura's leaving, and footsteps walking up the stairs.
There was a knock at my door, and after hearing my meek 'come in', my mother walked in. I averted my gaze to my hands and my mother sat down on my bed next to me, not saying a word.
It was silent for a while as I fidgeted with my hands nervously. When I couldn't take it anymore, I finally brought my gaze up to my mother and broke the silence.
"Why were the Yukimura's here?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
My mother sighed.
"We had some business to attend to," she answered vaguely.
At least she answered.
"How do you know Kira's mum?" I said, asking another question.
"We used to work together," she responded evenly.
They used to work together? When? And why didn't she tell me this earlier? Before I could ask my mother another question, she asked me one.
"Where were you?" she asked me.
"A party," I said quietly.
My mother smiled and asked, "was it with Stiles?"
Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I nodded my head embarrassedly.
My mother grinned, telling me to go to bed, and got up. She was about to leave the room when she looked back at me.
"One last thing," she said. "Has anything... strange been happening to you lately? With fire, maybe?"
She knew. She knew what was happening to me. That question had been so direct she might as well had asked me if I was immune to fire. But how did she know? And why didn't she tell me what was going on instead of pretending like nothing happened?
I felt a foreign sense of distrust as I looked up at my mother. I'd never been suspicious or distrusting of my mother, but since we moved to Beacon Hills she's been acting so strange and I couldn't help but doubt she was telling me everything.
That was why when I answered, I made sure it was her who was being lied to, not me.
"No," I said simply, and my mother shut the door.
. . .
The next day, I walked the halls of the school before class, trying to find Stiles. He wasn't at his locker or Scott's, and I was curious as to what he had to do last night. I was also wondering whether or not to tell Stiles about my whole 'situation', but that was still undecided.
I ended up finding Stiles in the science classroom with Scott, but instantly I could tell something was off. He was looking at the board, his hands clenched into fists as he muttered, "it was here. It was all here."
I walked further into the classroom, alerting both boys to my presence.
"Hey, is everything okay?" I asked him.
Stiles seemed one breathe away from breaking down as he looked at me and I quickly walked towards him, wrapping him into a hug.
Stiles hugged me tightly, as if I was his lifeline, and he seemed reluctant as he finally let me go. He looked tried. Very tired. I wondered how much sleep he'd gotton this past few days. I pecked him on the lips, and he gave me a tired smile in response.
"When did this happen?" Scott asked as he grinned from ear to ear.
"Last night," I said with a small smile.
Scott's grin disappeared as he stared at us, aghast.
"No! I owe Lydia ten bucks!" He complained.
My eyes widened at his words.
"You bet on us?" I exclaimed.
Scott shrugged his shoulders, muttering something that sounded a lot like 'you guys were the ones who were acting like a married couple' that I decided to ignore.
"What was the important thing you had to do last night?" I asked Stiles instead.
Stiles and Scott looked up at each other for a second before Stiles shook his head.
"It doesn't matter," he told me, rubbing his eyes tiredly.
I knew whatever happened was connected to the big secret he, Scott, and his friends were keeping, but I didn't pry. Stiles seemed so tried and not being in on a secret seemed so petty at that moment.
"Are you okay?" I asked him gently.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just haven't been sleeping really..." Stiles answered half-heartedly.
"Why don't you go home?" Scott offered. "Take a sick day or something."
Stiles looked back at the board as he thought.
"Yeah, yeah maybe I will," he murmured.
Scott pat Stiles on the shoulder, squeezing it lightly before leaving the room. Stiles looked at me and frowned.
"Are you alright?" he asked me. "You also seem tired... and confused."
I was about to brush him aside, assure him that I was fine when I wasn't and that there was nothing to worry about when there was, but I stopped.
I didn't exactly want to tell Stiles about my problem in this moment, though I was sure I wanted to tell him, but I didn't know when I'd see him next or if the next time I did see him would be under even worse circumstances.
"Can you keep a secret?" I asked him hesitantly.
Stiles nodded his head attentively. Even though he seemed so tired, he focused all his attention on me and honestly wanted to know what was wrong.
I bit my lip, debating whether or not to tell him when everything suddenly came bursting out. It was like I couldn't contain it anymore, and I needed someone else to know besides Kira and me.
I told Stiles everything, from my strange immunity to fire, to my parents and how my mother somehow knew what was happening to me. Stiles listened to it all in rapt attention and when I finally finished, all he did was hug me.
"It'll be okay," he assured. "We'll figure out whatever's going on together. You're not alone."
I felt tears prick my eyes at his words but now was not the time.
"You can't tell anyone," I said, pulling away from the hug. "This has to stay between us. No one else can know."
"I won't tell anyone," Stiles promised.
"Thank you," I said. "Now, you should really go home."
Stiles nodded and kissed me goodbye, making my knees weak, before leaving.
Soon after, I also left the classroom to find Kira and tell her what had happened last night before class started.
I found her getting her stuff and when she saw me she seemed relieved.
"I have news," I told her.
"Me too," she said back.
I gestured for her to go first, and she looked around nervously before lowering her voice.
"I think I might be a Kitsune," she said.
"Like, from Japanese folklore?" I asked her.
Kira nodded her head, grateful that I understood.
"There are 13 different types of Kitsune," she continued. "I've figured out that I'm a Thunder Kitsune because they can summon lightning, and I thought of your fire power so I looked to see if you might be one, and there is a Fire Kitsune, but they can't heal burns like you did."
I felt happy and disappointed. I was happy because Kira was figuring out who, or rather what, she was, but disappointed that I wasn't like her. It made me feel alone again.
"That's great, Kira," I said genuinely, pushing my other feelings aside. I'd figure out what I was, it would just take some time.
"What was your news?" Kira asked me.
Instantly, I launched into an explanation of what I'd overheard last night and how my mother made something called the Oni stronger and how she also knew what I was.
"What are the Oni?" Kira asked me.
"I have no idea," I replied, shrugging my shoulders.
"And you're positive your mother knows what's going on with you?"
I nodded my head and Kira sighed.
"So much more confusion," she muttered.
"Me and Stiles are also dating," I said quickly.
Kira gasped and let out a squeal as she shook my back and forth excitedly.
"Why didn't you start with that?" she asked.
For the rest of the day, Kira constantly teased me about Stiles, and when I mentioned that Scott and Lydia had held a bet on the outcome of our romance, her teasing increased.
I was relieved when it was the end of the day, and I could have a break from all the teasing. I was about to go home when I noticed Kira get on the back of Scott's motorcycle and drive off with him.
Oh she's gonna get hell tomorrow, I thought, grinning, before making my way home.
I was determined to figure out what was going on, even if that meant completely destroying my parents' privacy and risking being disowned.
I needed to know.
