After four hours of class, the bell rang for lunch break and me and Amy walked to the canteen.
The place was messy with students eating, laughing, running around like lunatics and throwing tantrums, as usual. I got a bottle of apple juice while Amy was having a small carton of milk and a sandwich. I usually ate less for lunch and with that, I didn't like what this college canteen served. So a bottle of apple juice was my lunch on college days.
We sat at our usual table and were chattering until Lily and Zinnia showed up. We three sat together at lunch. Sometimes their friends would accompany them but would later feel like an outcast as me, Lily and Zinnia would be busy teasing and talking to each other. And the same went for Amy too. But since she didn't have any other friends, she would still sit with me. She knew how close me, Lily and Zinnia were so she was used to it whenever she felt like an outsider. I knew I was doing a great injustice to her but still, I was trying my best to not make Amy uncomfortable.
"Yo, girls," said Zinnia, taking the bag off from her shoulder and plopping down next to me.
I saw Lily at a distance from our table. She was busy on her phone, talking to someone.
"Heya." I gave my juice to Zinnia as I knew it was her favorite.
"Hi, Zinnia," said Amy, smiling at her.
"Hi, Amy! You look different today. Did you get a new haircut?" asked Zinnia, looking at Amy and taking a sip of apple juice.
"Yes, I did," Amy replied shyly.
"You had a haircut? Wow, I didn't notice," I said and chuckled to myself.
"Yeah, to be honest, no one did except my mom and now Zinnia. Even Ash didn't notice it," said Amy, sadness evident in her voice.
"But you look good. This new style suits you," said Zinnia, trying to lighten her up.
"Really? My mom said I ruined it even more by cutting it short again and having bangs."
"No. You look cute. I mean even cuter," said Zinnia to cheer her up again.
"Thanks, Zinnia," said Amy shyly.
And I was sitting in the middle of them, watching, more like observing, their interaction. I always had a doubt whether Zinnia liked Amy.
Zinnia was a cool person who had her own attitude and style. She had a bad mouth like me but she knew when to and not to use it, which was so unlike me. But still, she was a really good person who would be there for others who are going through difficult times. Zinnia was my partner in crime. The one that was deranged and chaotic like me. We did all the mischievous stuff together, sometimes troubling or pranking Lily. She was like a big sister to me in every way. She was a carefree person who didn't do relationships but just one night stands and friends with benefits. She once was in a relationship with a girl during her high school but that didn't last long as she found that girl clingy and irritating. After breaking up with her, Zinnia tried twice. Getting nothing but the same results out of those relationships, she came to know that she was not a staunch person. And ever since, she hadn't been in relationships and never intended to, I guess.
But I had always felt Zinnia had something for Amy as she ignored her but never failed to notice the mere things on her that went unnoticed by everyone else. And ignoring was a kind of romantic approach of Zinnia. So when connecting all these, like pieces of a jigsaw, I ought to have some doubts in my mind.
"Yo, what are you thinking?" asked Zinnia as she noticed me drowning in my pool of thoughts.
"Huh? Nothing," I said, shaking my head, gesturing that it was nothing and also to knock these puzzled thoughts out of my brain.
"Hi. Sorry guys, I was busy," said Lily, walking towards us and sitting next to Zinnia.
"It's fine," I said.
"Who was it anyways? You seemed really busy talking to that person," asked Zinnia, taking another sip of my juice.
Seeing that, I grabbed the bottle from her and mouthed 'enough' when she looked at me with her eyebrows furrowed.
"It was Andrew."
I nodded my head and drank the juice.
"He's taking me on a date tonight," said Lily.
"Then what about your favorite milkshake?" I asked her.
"He said he will be a bit busy after college but he's free at night. So he planned a dinner to make it upto me."
"Oh, ok," I said.
"Oh, he's really sweet," said Zinnia, clasping her hands, imitating me from morning's scene at the building's entrance.
"Stop with that already," said Lily, laughing and smacking Zinnia's arm.
I rolled my eyes playfully at her and drank the juice.
"Hey, Amy! Sorry, I didn't notice you were sitting here," said Lily apologetically.
"Hi. How are you doing?" asked Amy.
"I'm good. By the way, you look a bit different."
"I got a haircut."
"Yeah! And her best friend and boyfriend didn't notice it while we did," said Zinnia, mocking me.
"Hey, it was hard for me to notice, ok?" I said defensively.
"Elka is like that. She wouldn't notice the physical changes but emotional changes take her attention and she will be there to fix it, right Elka?" asked Lily, smiling at me.
"Yeah, you're so fucking right," I replied, grinning. "And you, Zinnia Salim," I said, pointing at Zinnia. "You are a psycho student so your observation level will be a bit higher than us. So don't compare me with you, psycho."
"Yeah, it's true. I notice the little things in Amy. I-I mean, not only Amy but everyone," said Zinnia, crossing her arms across her chest.
"I notice the little things in Amy."
Oh no! That jigsaw is in my head again!
Admit that I was right
But still, you try to fight
You leave me in the night
When you refuse to lose
