"Amelia..."
"Just take me to the bathroom." I give her a stern look when she pleads with me, "please, Jamie, it's just my—" Her face twinges in pain and I don't know much about womanly problems but, in all my years of knowing Amelia, this has never happened.
"No, Amelia, I'm taking you to the emergency room." She looks at me in mortification.
"You can't." Her face tightens again. "Not over stupid fucking period cramps. It's just really bad cramps. That's all it is. Please, just take me to the bathroom so I can clean myself up and take care of this. This is so embarrassing—" She winces again.
"I'll take you to the bathroom to clean up but you've never had cramps like this before." I carry her body weight with one arm just a bit more down the hallway until we've reached two sets of bathroom doors; one for men and one for women. I don't think twice before opening the door and carrying her inside.
"Jamie! You can't be—" She chokes on a painful noise before she nearly doubles over. I look down, seeing more red trickle down her legs feeling a cold sensation spread throughout my chest. I might be a man but I'm not stupid. I have an idea what's happening right now but I don't say anything to her as I help her to the toilet. She insists I turn around and I do. I keep my back turned even when I hear an audible gasp.
After a few moments I say, "Amelia, I think we should go to the emergency room." She doesn't say anything. "Amelia?" I turn around once I hear the toilet flush. She's staring at the toilet with a hand clutched to her stomach. She manages to stumble over to the sink where she begins washing her hands. "Amelia?"
"I'm fine." She mutters out, as she begins washing her hands. "I'm fine." I look at her reflection in the mirror and she looks anything but fine.
"When was your last—"
"I don't know." She's now scrubbing her hands vigorously as tears begin to flow down her face. "I—" She looks like she's going over it in her head. "Six or seven weeks ago." I begin to do the math in my head but don't say anything.
"Amelia, stop." I walk up behind her and shut the faucet off. I place both on my hands on hers before she lets out another painful noise, this time accompanied with a cry.
"Jamie—" She sobs and then clutches her stomach again. If it was out of pain or fear I don't know. I turn her body around in my arms and hug her tightly to me. "Jamie, I—" She sobs into my chest.
"I know, love." I kiss the top of her head. "I know."

About an hour later we'd made it to the emergency room. We'd filled out the proper paperwork and after a bit of a wait we were finally seen. After a review of her medical history and a few tests our mutual fear was confirmed.
Amelia had, had a miscarriage.
They'd prescribed her things to ease the pain and told her the rest would pass in its own time. The rest being what was once the potential to be our child.
I'd came in Amelia over and over again when she came to visit me in Vegas. The first time had been an accident, but all the other times not so much. This, this is the horrible result of that. My best friend, someone I love dearly, miscarrying.
Amelia hasn't said a single word since we'd left the hospital. She hasn't cried since we were at Edison Industries either. She hasn't had much expression about anything or really any type of emotional response at all since. She was completely freaking me out. But even though her behavior freaks me out, I don't say anything about it to her.
Once we get to her apartment, after her wincing and choking back the pain she was in the entire way up, I open the door. I carefully help her inside. Amelia tugs my suit jacket, the one that's covered in blood from me carrying her out of her workplace. I don't even have to ask where she wants me to help her to. I already know.
I wordlessly bring her to the bathroom. I lean in and turn on the shower once we're inside, making sure it's the perfect temperature before helping her undress. I help strip each garment off of her body except the last bits. I ask her if she needs any more help but she shakes her head no, dismissing me.
Once I close the door I head into her living room. I shrug out of my suit jacket, discarding it on the floor. I don't want it to stain her furniture, like I have her. I look over the rest of me and see no other evidence of the days events on me. It's just a dull ache that resides in my chest now. The moment I hear a painful sob ring out from the bathroom is the moment the pain goes from dull to nearly unbearable.
I immediately go back into the bathroom. I strip all the way down as she continues to cry, completely unaware that I'm in here with her. Her cries are ones I've never heard before and I absolutely hate myself for being the reason for them.
"Amelia?" I say right outside the shower curtain.
"Yeah?" She manages to choke out.
"Can I come in there with you?" She doesn't say anything; not a yes or a no. After another moment I say, "I'm coming in there with you, Mellie." I open the shower curtain and step inside behind her.
"Jamie," she turns around, "I'm bleeding. You don't want to be in here." She's bleeding because of me, because of something we did, created, together.
"It's fine, Amelia." I open my arms then step forward to wrap them around her small, wet frame. "I'm so sorry." I say into the top of her hair as she starts crying again. "I'm so so sorry." Her arms cling to me tighter as she cries harder and harder.

The shower had lasted until Amelia had completely exhausted herself. She clung to me the majority of the time, crying endlessly into my chest. I wasn't sure if she was crying because of the miscarriage, what's been going on between us, or just a combination of everything that's happened recently. Regardless, I'd stayed and soothed her until she was spent.
She'd wanted to spend the night alone but I didn't want to leave. So, our compromise was that I stay in the guest bedroom. Luckily, Amelia had an old pair of sweats and one of my shirts so I could get changed. But a restful nights sleep was the last thing I got. Between Amelia's soft cries and my worry about her, there was no sleeping.
Every now and again, after she'd fallen asleep, I'd get up to go and check on her. I'd made sure she was okay. I'd laid behind her and stroked her hair as she slept, telling her how sorry I was when she'd start restlessly murmuring in her sleep. Once she'd fall back into a deep slumber I'd leave again.
"Hey." I say, looking over my shoulder as Amelia walks into the kitchen. "I'm making pancakes." I flip the current one I'm working on over.
"I'm not that hungry." She mumbles as she grabs a water bottle out of the fridge. I figured she'd say that though, so I'd made her favorite.
"They're chocolate chip." I give her a smile when I see her eyes lighten up a bit as she goes to sit at the breakfast bar. "Figured you wouldn't say no to that." I grab her a plate and place two on it. "Where's your syrup?"
"In the cabinet next to the fridge." I nod and then grab it. I pour just the right amount and then grab her silverware. I set the plate in front of her.
"Eat up, buttercup." She grabs her fork and digs right in. She let's out a satisfied hum around the bite in her mouth, which makes me smile at her. I turn back to the stove and serve myself a plateful as well before going to sit next to Amelia.
"Why didn't you tell me you were in Boston?" She finally asks after a minute of us eating in silence.
I pause for a moment, looking at my food before I say, "I didn't think you'd want to see me. You didn't return my calls for nearly three weeks, Amelia. Then the other night, when you called me and we, uh, you know..."
"Yeah, let's not talk about that."
"Right, well it ended really awkwardly and I just figured it'd be better off if I gave you some space." She nods her head at me before digging back into her pancakes. "Who knew that we'd be working together though."
"The coincidence of all coincidences. I didn't even know that it was part of a larger corporation when I'd gotten hired. I was just going over numbers." She shrugs. "Who knew I'd end up in a meeting with the three of you."
"Looks like you'll be working a lot closer with Rhoen now." She doesn't say anything and I wonder if she knows who Cole is. "I'm guessing you don't know who your boss is either."
"What do you mean?"
"Cole is Rhoen's brother-in-law." She drops her fork onto her plate. "Yeah, I figured you didn't know that. He's also into you."
She rolls her eyes and says, "no he's not." I don't say anything else as I take another bite. I don't want to tell her that he's clearly infatuated with her. "I'm just really glad you were there yesterday. I don't know what I would've done if..." She pauses, chocking back her tears.
"I'm glad I was there too, Amelia." I turn to look at her and then grab ahold of her hand. "I'll always be there for you, here for you." She nods in understanding, looking down at her plate. "Do you want to talk about it?" She shakes her head no. "Alright, but I'm staying with you until you're feeling better."
"Jamie, you don't have to do that." She wipes the tears that are slowly falling down her face with her free hand.
"Yes, I do. I'm your best friend." I was also the father of the child that had been inside of her but I'm not going to say that. She looks up at me and gives me a sad smile, like she knew the words I'd wanted to say. I stand up and wrap my arms around her. "I won't go back to Vegas until I know you're okay." I place a kiss on the top of her head, sealing my promise to her.
