His daughter. That girl is his daughter. Jamie slept with his boss's daughter. Of fucking course he slept with his boss's daughter. It was such a typical Jamie type of thing to do. It was so Jamie in fact that he'd done it without even realizing he'd done it. His face is currently paler than the tablecloth which is how I one-hundred percent know he'd not meant to sleep with her. Well, he definitely meant to sleep with her but I know he didn't want to bone his boss's daughter specifically.
"That's the new client?" Jamie somehow managed to sound normal even though he looks like he's going to be sick. I'm sure he is because, from what he's told me, Rhoen is a pretty big fucking deal. This client, Rhoen, the man I'd just shot down for Jamie, is supposed to either make or break Jamie's career here in Vegas. Wonderful. Just wonderful.
"Well, he's not a new client yet but hopefully he will be. We'll have to see you put those sly business tactics and those swift negotiating skills you have to use. Your father has been going on and on about them. I'm excited to see what you've got to offer and your potential." Jamie doesn't say anything he just nods aimlessly which makes Luke's brow furrow. "Is something the matter, James?"
"No, not at all, sir." He's a good liar, most of the time, right about now though not so much. "I just, I uh..." He runs his hand through his dark-red locks uneasily. "The client and I have already met." I doubt he really wants to go into specifics about that particular fun fact though.
"Oh, is that so?" Jamie nods again and I can tell he's trying to compose himself. Jamie is never so off his game.
"Amelia here introduced them." Seth chimes in from off to my right. He sounds amused and I have to resist the urge to kick him underneath the table. "She's already made friends with your potential client. She met him at the airport after the plane ride in from Boston."
"Is that so?" His eyes find mine and I give him a small smile and a nod.
"Yeah, I met him in baggage claim. He helped me with my bags." I try to say it as nonchalantly as possible. I don't want him thinking it's a bigger deal than it is considering Jamie is still working on fixing his face. Mr. Super-Sly-Business-Guy can't seem to get it together. "He seems like a really nice guy." It wasn't a lie either. Rhoen really did seem like a genuinely good person. Hopefully he won't let the situation between the three of us interfere with his business decisions.
"Interesting. Well, let me not keep you from your dinner. It was nice to see the two of you again. It's been a while. You'll have to see Mal and Den while you're in town. Maybe stop by the house for dinner?"
"Of course!" Rae, Jamie's mother, responds automatically. "We'd love to! I miss those two."
Luke gives her a blinding smile and says, "then dinner it is." He gives a nod to Seth and Rae then he turns to me, "always a pleasure to see you as well, Amelia." After he leaves we all just sit there for an uncomfortable moment.
"Luke's a great guy. I'm sure he's been a great boss." Rae finally says. "He is such a sweetheart, honestly."
"Such a sweetheart?" Seth looks over to her and cocks an incredulous brow. The act makes her roll her eyes at him. "And here I am thinking Denver was the one to be worried about."
"Oh stop it, Seth. You know what I mean."
"Yeah yeah and you say I'm the one with a thing for blondes. It would appear that it's a two-way street." He gives her a pointed look and I can't help but laugh. I know Seth isn't Jamie's real father and I know it bothers him sometimes that his parents divorced. I also can't help but think whenever I get married I want to have the playful type of marriage Seth and Rae have.
"What's up with that?" Jamie finally interjects, breaking his silence.
"What's up with what?" Seth responds.
"I met his friend, the one you just mentioned, Denver, the other day with Amelia. Luke said they were business partners or something?" I watch both of their faces turn a bit awkward which I find interesting. "Why do you both have that same stupid look on your face?"
"Jamie!" Rae scolds him.
"What Mom? You do." Jamie shrugs and continues, "I just found the interaction between them a bit... odd. It was almost like... I don't know." I know he doesn't want to say what he's thinking- that the two of them almost looked like they were together, like a couple.
"Well uh-" His mother takes a sip of her water looking anywhere but at the two of us. "They've got a special kind of relationship."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Jamie said the exact words I'd been thinking. "What do you mean special?"
"Luke is a polygamist." Rae chokes on her water at Seth's blunt words. "He likes men and women too."
"Seth!" Rae finally manages to get out after a moment. "You know he doesn't like his business spread about. What is wrong with you?"
"Oh come on, they're bound to find out, Rae. It's not like they really even try to hide their relationship anymore." She still looks at him disdainfully which tells me that specific fun fact is one Jamie's boss isn't keen on too many people knowing.
"Wait, he's a polygamist?" I chime in not being able to help myself. "I thought he was married?"
"He is, to my cousin Malyssa." He shrugs like it's no big deal as he continues, "but they also have another spouse who they live with."
"You're saying Denver is their spouse, as in both of them?" I didn't know that this was actually a thing. I didn't know people actually lived like that.
"That's what I'm saying." Seth looks completely unfazed so I guess he really has known about this for a while. "They've been together for a really long time. Whatever floats their boat I guess."
"Progressive." I didn't know what else to say to that. His boss was one of the most attractive men I'd ever seen. It's no surprise to me that both men and women are attracted to him. "Denver seemed like a nice enough guy. He said he knew you."
"Oh yeah, we've been friends for years. I've know him since his days of living in Boston." He gives a genuine smile and adds, "we used to fight together back in the day."
"That's what he said." I think back to our awkward exchange and the way he gripped my hand at the mention of my mother. "He also mentioned knowing my mother."
"He knew Katie?" Rae asked automatically.
"That's what he said."
"Yeah, he acted really weird after finding out Amelia was her daughter too." Jamie continues with, "other than that he seemed pretty normal. Never would've guessed he's into what he's into." The last part made me want to roll my eyes.
"You know how stereotypical that sounds?"
He shrugs, "I'm just saying I never would've guessed the whole thing going on between them. Luke just doesn't even seem like the type. He's such a straight edge, business oriented guy."
After that it's quiet for a moment, too long of a moment. It's almost uncomfortable as I watch Rae and Seth look back and forth between each other. It's like they are having a conversation without speaking. What that conversation is I want to know. I really want to know.

I'd told Jamie I wanted to go for a walk by myself. I know it's his birthday and I shouldn't be just leaving him alone, especially as his new girlfriend. I just couldn't relax after dinner. There's this nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach. There's something telling me that there's something just not right and I feel like Seth knows about whatever that is.
The way he and Raegan had looked at each other during dinner had told me he did. I'd even venture to say she knew about that something as well. And what I truly hated was the fact that I felt like it had to do with my mom. Whoever this Denver guy is, him seeming to know my mother was a pretty big deal.
Once I get to their hotel door I bring my hand up to knock and freeze when I hear Seth loudly say, "I don't know who her father is, Rae. I have no idea."
"Do you think Sean knows? I mean for fuck's sake, Seth, he's raised Amelia like his own child." I hear someone pacing around as Rae continues with, "Seth, to this very day you still wonder if she's your daughter." My fist drops automatically and my hand goes to my mouth, covering the noise I'd begin to let out.
"Do you not think I know that, Raegan?" Seth's voice is extremely agitated. "Without the DNA test I could've been. You know that."
"Did you ever see the results?"
"No." No. The word rings in my ears as tears prick my eyes. Seth could've been my father. I feel my breath hitch. He still could be my father. "She wouldn't have lied about that. Jesus fucking Christ, I sure hope she wouldn't have lied about that."
"But do you think it really could be Denver?"
"I know they knew each other but I don't know if they were a thing. She never said they were. Katie was sure it was mine."
It meaning me. My mother was sure I was Seth's baby. Seth, a man I've treated like an older brother my entire life, slept with my mother. My mother thought Seth was my father. I feel the anxiety begin to course through my veins and as they continue talking I stop listening. I can't listen to anything with the amount of tears flowing down my face.
I turn my back on the door and run down the hallway. With tears blinding my vision, I don't see the body in front of me, the body I run straight into. Once I'm able to wipe the tears out of my eyes, murmuring how sorry I am, I look up to see a familiar face staring back at me.
"Are you okay, Amelia?" His deep voice asks.
"No, no I'm not."
