Chapter Twenty-Two: Proposal
"When hope is lost.
Where there's no light
to shine.
And all is well
To disappear.
Keep waiting.
For the Sun will always shine."

Rey's POV
I was in no mood for small talk if that's why Ben called my name for.
But after he mentioned that he was there if I needed him...well...I couldn't hold this façade of mine any longer.
I clenched my horse's reins as Ben moved closer to me.
To be honest, all I wanted to do was cry my eyes out right now but nothing would escape my eyes.
I couldn't cry, right now...I didn't even know how.
I was such a mess.
Just when I faced Ben, an overwhelming sense of emotions came over me.
Tears spilled from my eyes.
And one true fact I realized about myself was...
I wasn't strong enough.
Ben's arms embraced me with such care as if I were the most fragile thing.
"Rey, please don't cry."
As much as I wanted to I couldn't.
If anything his words made me cry more.
I clenched the sides of his dark hued cloak, not wanting to let go.
He was all I had left.
My only and last hope.
"What's the matter Rey."
"I'm not strong enough."
"You may think so but you're stronger than you realize. If anything, you're stronger than me."
He moved a lock of my hair to uncover a part of my face.
I felt my eyes lighten, even sparkle at such kindness.
He was absolutely the most caring person I've ever met besides my mother.
He was truly the only one who really sought to see me for me and not just for my appearance.
And I was sure.
This man in front of me, was the man I wanted to marry.
Ben was the only one I could see in my future.
"If I am any strong...it is only because of you Ben." We touched foreheads as he gave me a small smile.
His soft doe eyes peered into mine.
His ungloved hand went to my face.
But before he could take the next move my hand stopped him.
"Ben." I spoke to him as he moved away enough to see eye to eye with me.
He seemed a bit disappointed but nodded.
"How are we going to get married?"
"M-married? In the middle of all of this?"
"Well...I know that I can't live without you Ben...I don't see anyone else in my life besides you. And I couldn't go on like this any longer unless we got married. I know it's the worst time possible to bring this up but-"
"I feel that exact same way about you Rey. If you wish to get married, once we hit town, we can get married."
"You sure you don't mind?"
"Of course not, I've been planning to actually ask you for awhile now. But the right time never came up."
He paused for a moment, grabbing something from his pocket, a small silver ring.
It wasn't anything too fancy.
I couldn't stop the tears again.
But these weren't of sadness.
I was happy they were tears of joy.
Even though a part of me still stung like thorns of a rose...I won't ever forget my dear mother.
She would have wanted me to move forward to look up to my future with Ben.
She wouldn't of wanted me to stand in sadness all my life, grieving her.
"As cliché as this might sound...Will you be the one to stay at my side?" I sensed he was quite uncomfortable and nervous to ask as I couldn't help but chuckle with teary eyes.
"Yes, of course." It was almost a whisper to him as he placed the ring on my finger.
We embraced for a little while, enjoying the small moment of happiness.
———
After a few hours of rest we saddled up and headed toward our destination.
As we rode our own horses Ben went first into the town to see if the coast was clear.
A few minutes later he called for me, I followed.
3rd Person POV
As the two traveled through a small town they made sure to keep their guard up as they looked for a place to stay.
As well as a place to be declared, secretly, as husband and wife.
To finally be united as one.
After hours of searching the found a small place for the night as well as food for them and their horses.
Ben stood idle for awhile as he watched Rey put away the horses in a stable, waiting for her to return to his side once more.
After all that was going on he wanted to do his best to keep her safe.
Away from the monster of a grandfather of her's.
He was not afraid to fight for her, not afraid to put his very life on the line for her safety.
And he'd do anything to keep that smile on her face.
As Rey came to his side once more she gave him a smile he couldn't help but return.
"What?" She asked knowing the answer but still wanting Ben to confess those words.
But he did not, as he was too shy to say anything at the moment.
He only took her hand in his, kissing the back of it.
"We should head inside, the weather is only worsening."
Rey followed her now fiancé inside a small place filled with people from the town.
Out of them two, Rey, not being used to being so far from home, became nervous.
In effect of such a feeling she held onto Ben's hand for comfort.
"Stay close." Was all he said to her before speaking to one of the townsfolk.
He would come to find, after collecting information from one of the townsfolk, that both Rey and him would be able to get married in that same evening.
What both Rey and Ben did not know was that there was a spy amongst the townsfolk, watching their every step.
And that same evening would be the first step to getting Rey in the hands of her grandfather.
