Chapter Twenty: To Keep You Safe
"I'll be honest.
Not all may seem right.
Neither will it fall straight.
But I'll be there to hold your hand.
From all harms way.
If I can, I'll keep you safe."
Created by me.
Ben's POV
I was glad to have been making Rey's day.
She seemed beside herself with joy.
That only seemed to put a smile on my face as I looked at her.
We enjoyed our time in our little world for a while longer before shouts were heard from afar.
The deer scattered every-which way.
Then smoke started to form above the edges of the trees, not too far from us both.
I could only imagine the worst...
"Oh no! Mother! We have to go! What if she's in danger?!"
Rey became very distressed. She seemed to sink smaller than herself with the fear she held in her eyes.
"All we could hope for... is that nobody's hurt. But we'll leave at once." I took her gentle hand in mine.
She delivered a gentle squeeze to my hand, giving me a small smile as if to say thank you.
When we both arrived at the castle...well...it wasn't pretty at all.
The castle was on fire, the air was filled with the cries and shouts of those caught victim to the attack.
Without warning Rey had hopped off the horse and was now running straight into the castle to look for her mother.
I took no time in tying up the horse as I immediately followed her, drawing my sword.
If anything was possible...I wanted her safety above all else.
And for some odd reason I knew this attack was personal.
It was about Rey, whether she knew or not wasn't the case.
But knowing 'who' and 'why' was the question.
At least, it would've been the question if it wasn't for me already knowing the answer.
Just when Rey was about to stumble I caught her.
"Don't be in too much of a hurry, you'll get hurt."
Being quite flustered and on edge she could only nod with a desperate glance before continuing her search for her mother, Cordelia.
Rey was about to go upstairs.
Just when I was close to following once more I felt the need to look behind me...and there Cordelia was...in the arms of General Hux who held a knife to her throat, drawing blood.
"Rey! Come down here, I found her!"
"Really?!" She ran down the stairs and stood still, petrified...in shock to see what I saw.
"..mother..." she whispered with tears in her eyes.
And just as a lightning bolt would hit the ground, in an instant, Rey became furious and snapped.
I held her back as she started to clench her hands on my arms, trying to part from my hold on her.
"Let go of me!! That carrot-duke-of-limbs will pay!"
"Rey...you need to keep a leveled head or you won't win. Don't let rage overcome you. Please." I spoke softly to her as she calmed down.
"They have her Ben...please do something..." tears fell from her eyes like rain.
"Of course, just stay close." I gave her a dagger I had on me as we went to face Hux.
Rey's POV
I couldn't believe my eyes.
Cordelia had been half beaten and not only that but was also currently being held hostage by a red-headed man.
I already knew I hated him. I didn't even have to guess this feeling boiling inside of me.
I wanted so much as to lay a few good blows on him from what he had done to my mother but Ben held me back.
He's grip faltered not from my attempt to unlatch from his hold.
"Let go of me!! That carrot-duke-of-limbs will pay!" Rage started to raise in me.
"Rey...you need to keep a leveled head or you won't win. Don't let rage overcome you. Please."
As if Ben's words couldn't be any more sweeter...he had calmed my nerves as well as my chaotic thoughts.
"They have her Ben...please do something..."
The reason for my desperation was not from being angry alone.
It wasn't even that I wanted my mother safe from these men's hands alone...but also from how weak I was in situations like this.
I wanted to be of help, to know how to fight properly, to be able to win the battles...but I was afraid I could do nothing.
And to top it off I wasn't in the best place with Cordelia right now, I didn't get the chance to say how sorry I truly was for how horrible I've been to her....when she alone tried to protect me, she wanted nothing but good for me.
And all I could do was feel betrayed, acting like the child I was.
I, in all honesty, didn't deserve such a loving person in my life such as her.
For comfort I held one hand to my necklace given by Ben.
It reassured me somehow.
"Of course, just stay close." Ben spoke to me as he handed me his dagger.
Now that both of us were armed with some sort of weapon we advanced toward the man holding Cordelia hostage.
"Let her go Hux, she has no part in this." Ben stated quite sternly as Hux did not budge.
"Tell your precious twit that. Her grandfather's more than happy to eliminate those in his path to becoming the richest man alive. And a few of his obstacles includes you lover boy! I can't wait to see the look on your dear's face as both her mother and lover are killed. Right. In. Front. Of. Her. Ha ha ha!"
"Shut it!!! You lunatic! I'll have your eyes gouged out as well as your tongue if you speak another word!!" Ben took a step forward preparing his sword as his booming voice filled what was left of the castle's first level.
People still ran every which way to escape from the black dressed bandits...or whatever they called themselves.
"Archer! Shoot him!"
The next second an arrow was flown to Ben, piercing his leg.
"Argh, damn you." Ben called out, sounding pretty irritated toward the red-headed man.
"What was that? I couldn't hear you." He taunted Ben, I knew that much.
It was obnoxious really.
"Now men, take the girl and leave this old hag to die with him."
He threw my mother on the ground as if she wasn't even human.
He treated her like dirt.
Two men took ahold of either side of my arms.
Hux came close to me.
I waited for the right moment until he was in range.
"Let's go little girl. Your grandfather is-"
Just then I had spit on him.
"I'll be going nowhere!" I stomped on one man's foot as I elbowed the other man.
I then head-butted Hux as he was just recovering from wiping off spit from his face.
"You insolent little-"
Before he could speak again I shoved him on the ground but he had grabbed me by my ankle just as I was about to go near Cordelia and Ben.
"Not so fast! You-"
Again, I attacked him by kicking him off me.
I scrambled to get up as Ben came to my side.
He had snapped and pulled the arrow out of his leg.
His face was emotionless as he walked past me with his sword in hand.
His moves were almost silent as he pierced Hux's arm with his sword in one swift movement as Hux laid on the ground, bleeding.
"Argh!! You devil!!"
"Says the man who threw and treated someone's mother like dirt. You have no right calling me a devil but you have a right to call me a monster, in your vocabulary. And you should have a right to fear me."
"You wish-" Ben grabbed him by his face harshly.
"Then you are a fool."
And just like that Ben toke his life from him.
"You shouldn't have watched." Ben was still turned from me as he spoke.
I felt myself cower a little. "Sorry."
He then turned around slowly, facing me as he walked over.
"No. I should be the one apologizing." He and I both helped my mother up.
"Stop, the both of you. I'm already done for. You both should run while you have the chance."
"Mother-"
"Please put me down." We did as she told us to as she continued to speak.
"I've lived my life as fully as I could and that is only thanks to you, my sweet girl. And whatever has happened between us...I won't hold against you any. I held back the truth that should've been given to you a long time ago. I just hope you...can forgive me."
I embraced her. "Of course!! I love you mother!!" I cried tears like no other.
I didn't want her to die, I didn't know what I would do without her.
When I let go my hands were full of blood.
She was bleeding internally...if only I had been here...this wouldn't of happened.
But...
There was nothing we could do...her wound was too great.
"Ben, take special good care of her. She's going to need you the most...now go."
"No!! I can't leave you!! Mother!!" Tears slipped from my eyes causing my vision to become blurry.
"I was glad to have been your mother even if we were never blood related...I will always love you Rey...I will always be with you."
"No! You can't just-!"
"Rey. I'll be fine. And don't ever blame yourself for what happens here today my dear Rey. You've done all you could do...and even more."
Ben took me to his side as we left the castle.
Even though she said for me not to blame myself for what happens...I couldn't help but feel guilty.
And...
I was never going to see her again.
