Chapter Nine: Staying Close

A collage of ReyxBen (aka DaisyxAdam) I created but pics are to their original owners or/and creators.

Ben's POV

Once Cordelia left Rey's bedroom quarters I stayed by Rey's door and lingered for awhile.

A guard came by.

"Is everything alright sir?" He was quite young and new to his post.

"Yes, just here waiting. Good day."

"It is quite a good day sir."

We looked at each other, awkwardly waiting for one of us to speak.

"You can go on your way, I'm quite busy as you can see."

He nodded in a fast paced way. "Yes! Of course!"

"And keep your tongue quiet." I whispered as he loudly whispered back.

"Yes sir!" He nodded and went on his way.

Faint clanks of the gaurd's metal armor was heard as it echoed down through the hallway.

Trying to be as discreet as I could about being by Rey's bedroom doorway was not really working to my favor all that well so I decided to enter into her room cautiously.

I wanted to sooth the itching thought of if she was alright or not.

To my relief she was alright, at the moment.

So I went back out into the hallway and sat in a slouched position. I wanted to be near to help her if anything were to have gone wrong.

Something, similar to (if not) a gut feeling, was telling me to stay as if something bad were to happen.

Time went by and before I could tell, it was already dusk as the sun started to set.

I got up from my slouched position.

Another guard went by and before he could address me and I signed with hand gestures for him not to say a word. We both nodded to each other in recognition instead, to greet one another.

I turned into Rey's doorway, opening the door just enough to see her deep in slumber.

She was alright. Again.

So I had no clue to why I felt so worried and off-edge for her.

I felt as if I were a cat on a hot tin roof. Not having the slightest clue as to if or when anything bad we're to happen to her.

Nether the less after a few moments more I decided to leave. At least I was about to until she started to have a vigorous way of twitching when I glanced again.

I was to guess she was having a seizure.

I was aware of this situations and knew quite well how to sooth them so I behaved immediately.

I came by her side in a quick fashion.

I scrounged around for a vase of ice water as well as a cloth to use to cool her down.

When I touched her skin she felt like fire. As if her skin was burning from the inside out.

When I peeked at her face to see her she was surprisingly awake.

Her eyes pleaded for rest of this seizure.
The pain, the heat, all of it.

Her forehead aligned with sweat.

She might have had no words to say it but her eyes said it all.

I occasionally dabbed her forehead and neck to relieve her of the heat in which seemed very over bearing for her at moments.

After a few minutes she was in calm state again but just so she wouldn't have to go into shock again, I'd stay by her side tonight at least for a short while.

Once she could speak I only listened.

"Thank you for taking care of me like this. Honestly I've never been so sick in my life besides having the measles as a child."

She attempted to smile but it only seemed to falter into a small frown as tears brimmed her soft hazel eyes.

She quickly wiped her eyes but I was already aware of her pain.

"You do not have to hold on to your pain like this around me Rey, I'm already aware. Instead, allow yourself to let anything your holding back free."

Unintentionally, Rey looked at me as that of a small puppy.

She could have melted my heart then.

She looked so broken.

Tears spilled out her eyes as she sobbed in very low volume.

"I'm in tremendous pain and somehow frightened and I have no clue why. I-"

I came to her side, not knowing what else to do, I embraced her tenderly.

A part of me half hoping she'd allow me to and surprised at her next movement...

She did.

"I'm here for you Rey. You have reason to let off your pain like this, I'm sure. But no need to be frightened."

Her small body quivered. Her head resting on my chest in comfort.

I wrapped a thin sheet around her for warmth but not too much to where she would overheat.

"I know it's daring of me to ask...but could you stay?" She sniffled as I wiped away a stray tear from her face.

I had nothing else but an answer of 'yes' to her invitation for me to stay.

"I will remain here a bit longer with you but I will not stay the night...in caution that I might over step my boundaries. I respect you too much to do something I'll regret, every man has a beast inside of them...I just never want mine to resurface as it has killed many."

The candle light illuminated on her beautifully curved face as she looked up at me.

"That's a weird threat and analogy." She lifted her eyebrow as I almost lost my words before speaking.

"I mean the nature of a man, it is unpredictable at times of vulnerability. War, pain, emotion, even...women. I would curse myself if I would ever do something to hurt or offend you...even scar."

She touched my face gently.

Her touch took me back to the way my mother had once did when I was just a boy of five years old. Before she was killed by the man who'd raise me into a war machine...a monster to even my own people.

And if she were to have read my mind...she spoke.

"You are no monster to me. You may have been one on the battle field and even in your past but now you're you Ben. All I see is you. But still, your right. I trust you too smally as you suggested. So yes you are quite wise in your words, you should not stay much longer. Instead we could meet in the garden in two days time."

Somehow I felt as if I had just messed up and missed my opportunity to have a 'spending time' with her ...but my morals stayed strong.

I will be the gentleman I wished to be for her even if it killed me. I will never be like that wretched king back home was and wished me to be.

"Alright Malady, I shall see you in two days time. Goodnight my dear Rey. I shall call someone in to check on you." I got up and bowed to her.

"Again, thank you Ben." She gave me the most pleasant and gentle smile.

I almost thought flowers would bloom from how beautiful she appeared.

"You should smile more, it suits you." We both seemed a bit earnestly startled by my comment.

A light tint of red popped on her face.

"I mean your always so pleasant to thee eye and..you know...smiling is even better for your complexion...and I'm just going to take my leave now."

"Goodnight Ben."

I swear I could die of embarrassment right now.

"Goodnight."

As if just in time a maid comes by.

I cleared my throat as well as straighten my back to a prouder stance.

"Excuse me, could you keep an eye on Lady Rey. She seems to be a bit ill and needs some attention for keeping cool."

"Yes my lord, right away."

The middle aged women only curtsied as she went into the room.

As for myself I felt a heavy rest come upon me, I needed to have a proper sleep for once.

Without hesitation I went to my quarters.

The second I hit the bed was the second I fell fast asleep.
