Annie was at school and students kept asking for pictures and autographs. Annie was a little overwhelmed by the sudden fame, but she enjoyed it at the same time. She had no idea that a ghost band would mean this much to her and help her dreams come true. She just hopes nothing ruins it in the future.
"Look at you," Flynn grinned as she approached Annie. "Annabelle Walker finally getting the fame she deserves."
"It was just a garage party," Annie chuckled as the kids that were taking pictures walked away. "I don't understand."
"Don't understand?" Flynn scoffed, "you and Jules are famous!"
"It's so overwhelming," Annie remarked. "I don't know if I can handle it."
"You will," Flynn smiled at her, before looking ahead to see Julie and Nick talking. "I think Nick just asked Julie out."
"Nick what?" Annie asked as she turned to see Julie and Nick.
"Any chance you could find time to go on a date with me?" Nick asked and Annie gasped with a smile.
"Oh my gosh," Annie whispered and Flynn grinned. Annie watched the two talk, but Julie was awkward and turned him down because she likes someone else.
Nick was saddened by the news, but recovered from it and awkwardly left.
Flynn and Annie approached Julie, who was holding her head.
"Well, that wasn't just a "What's up?" Flynn told Julie.
"Nick wanted to go on a date," Julie told them and the girls gasped, pretending not to know. "But I said no."
"What?" Flynn asked.
"You know what you said," Julie said. "This Luke thing isn't going away anytime soon, so I... I figured why waste Nick's time?"
"Aww! One of my babies are all grown up," Flynn smiled and looked at Annie, who furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.
"What? I really like Reggie and I'll admit it, but Julie is choosing to also like someone that we can't touch." Annie admitted.
"Fine, you're both all grown up," Flynn caved in and Annie chuckled. "Even if you're both choosing to like someone that doesn't really exist."
"But they do exist. To us," Julie objected. "And Luke might just be air, but we connect in so many other ways".
"Yeah, Reggie's the only one I feel a true connection with," Annie agreed.
"You guys are the most watchable duet-ers I've ever seen," Flynn smiled.
"It's not just singing," Julie continued. "When we write, we're drawing from the same pain. We both know how it feels to lose our moms."
"Reggie and I both know what it's like to have our parents not get along and divorce," Annie added on.
"Do not make me cry. I'm having a really good eyeliner day," Flynn mentioned, dabbing her eye.
"It's just... Luke's hurting so much, I wish I could help him," Julie sighed.
"Maybe you could write him a song! That would make him feel better!" Flynn beamed.
Julie's eye lit up, "oh my gosh, Flynn, you're a genius!"
Julie ran off, but Annie stopped her.
"Julie, we still have class!"
"Right!" Julie chuckled as she turned back around to follow Annie, "glad I have two genius best friends!"
——
-After School-
Annie sat in her bedroom doing her homework, trying to focus, but she couldn't. She hadn't seen Reggie all day and it worried her, he usually comes to see her after school every day.
Annie closed her textbook and called Julie, but she didn't answer her. Instead, Julie sent a text saying she was helping Luke and Annie understood.
"Maybe Alex knows," Annie mumbled, before getting off her bed and leaving her room to head to the studio.
Annie arrived at the studio and saw Alex sitting on the couch, messing with his drumsticks.
"Alex," Annie said and Alex smiled at the brunette.
"What's up, Annie?" Alex asked her, sitting up.
"Have you seen Reggie?" Annie asked him.
"Oh um, he went to look at his parents' old house," Alex said, rubbing his neck and Annie was confused.
"Where is that?"
"That bike shop near the beach," Alex told her.
"Oh, okay, thanks," Annie told him with a small smile and he returned one before she left. "Bye!"
"See ya!"
——
Annie went down to the beach and over to the bike shop, where she spotted Reggie sitting on the curbside just looking at it. Annie pulled out her phone and put it against her ear, so it doesn't seem like she's talking to herself.
She walked over to the ghost boy, who was just staring at the bike shop with a sorrowful look.
Reggie noticed Annie approach him out of the corner of his eye and she gave him a soft smile.
"Hey, Reggie," she greeted as she sat next to him. "Whatcha doing here?"
"Just remembering," he said. "I can't believe my parents' house got turned into a bike shop. A pizza place would've been better."
Annie chuckled and looked at the bike shop ahead of her. The bike shop was pretty sad looking, it wasn't really popular and Annie agreed a pizza place would have been better.
"Can I ask you something?" Annie asked Reggie, who looked at her and nodded. "What were your parents like?"
"What do I say? I mean, they fought all the time. I wouldn't be surprised if they got divorced after I died, I mean I didn't spend much time with them after I joined the band so I don't know."
Annie nodded at this, "I get it, my parents fought a lot which caused my dad to leave. I don't understand why two people would get married and then just fight all the time. Isn't marriage supposed to be about love?"
"It is," Reggie sighed. "Look at Luke's parents, they love each other. That's a healthy marriage, not what our parents had."
"I just hope whoever I end up with won't end in catastrophe," Annie mentioned.
"Maybe it won't," Reggie told her and Annie looked up at him to see him smiling at her.
"What makes you say that?" Annie asked him.
"If I've learned one thing, is that I care way too much to ever leave like your dad did," Reggie said. "I wouldn't do that to my wife, or my kids."
"I wouldn't either," Annie agreed. "I couldn't do that."
Annie just realized that Reggie implied he wants to end up with her.
"Wait, did you imply you want to... marry me?" Annie asked with a small smile and Reggie chuckled with his eyes widening.
"I didn't- I mean, I don't-" he paused and looked at Annie, who was smiling with a blush. "If that's how you look at it, then yes! Yes, I did."
Annie giggled, looking away bashfully.
"Well, I wouldn't mind if I ended up marrying you, but I'm only 15 and well... you're not exactly human," Annie reasoned.
"I know, but I don't give up easily," Reggie remarked. "I've never met anyone who knows what I'm feeling and loves music like I do. It just sucks that I'm a ghost and you're human.
"Yeah," Annie sighed before she looked down at his hand and attempted to grab it, but it phased through.
"What an interesting relationship you and I have," Reggie grinned, looking at their hands as well.
"Quite interesting indeed," Annie said with a soft smile.
Suddenly, Reggie get zapped and he yelled, holding his stomach and Annie gasped, standing up.
"What was that?!" Annie asked with alarm, kneeling next to him. She looked around and no one seemed to notice her behavior.
"Annie, I'm sorry, the guys forgot to tell you we have unfinished business that's why we came back as ghosts," he groaned, slowly recovering from the shock he had.
"Whatever is it we have to go find it, cause it just shocked you," Annie exclaimed with worry.
Reggie carefully sat up and groaned, "we have to play the show we never got to play."
"The Orpheum? Well, it shouldn't be too hard for us," Annie remarked.
"But we don't have a lot of time," Reggie objected in a shaky voice. "We did something we shouldn't have. The night we missed the dance, we met this ghost and he put this curse on us. And if we don't do what he says, then those jolts will destroy us."
"What does he want?" Annie asked.
"He wants us to be in his house band for eternity," Reggie explained, "but if we can play the Orpheum soon then we can avoid all that and actually cross over."
"Cross over?" Annie asked with confusion. "Like what? Go to heaven?"
"That's the plan," Reggie nodded.
"So, either you cross over, be in his band for eternity, or be destroyed by those jolts?" Annie questioned him.
"Yeah," Reggie nodded.
"How great," Annie mumbled with sarcasm before she got up and walked away from him.
"Annie!" Reggie called, but she ignored him and he sighed.
——
Annie returned home and was doodling in her book. It was a purple and blue butterfly she had been drawing for a while now and every time she looks at it, it reminds her of her love for music.
A soft knock was heard on Annie's door and she looked up to see Julie and Flynn standing there.
"Hey," Flynn greeted and Annie smiled at them, putting her notebook aside.
"What's up?" Annie asked the girls, who walked in and Julie sat down next to Annie as Flynn looked around the room.
"Did Reggie tell you about their unfinished business?" Julie asked Annie, who nodded.
"He did, why?" Annie asked her.
"Luke told me and I just wanted to know if you're holding up alright," Julie asked her, taking her hand.
"I'm here," Annie shrugged. "Just sucks that we might lose them after Reggie promised me he wouldn't leave. I'm tired of people leaving."
Julie put her arm around Annie, who leaned her head on her shoulder.
"Anyone I seem to care about disappears," Annie sighed.
"Jules said the same thing, you can't get rid of me. I'm like the crazy glue of best friends," Flynn remarked.
"Why do bad things happen to good people?" Annie asked.
"That's really pretty," Julie smiled at the butterfly drawing.
"Thanks," Annie smiled as Flynn opened Annie's closet to look through it.
"Did I say you could look through my stuff?" Annie asked Flynn.
"Best friends don't need permission," Flynn replied and Annie sighed. "We found something in Julie's mom's stuff and I was curious if- AHA!"
Flynn grabbed the shirt and turned to her best friends.
"I knew it.
Annie sat up in shock when she saw Flynn holding a Sunset Curve shirt.
"Did you know this was in here?" Flynn asked her, "because Julie has the same shirt."
"I did not," Annie asked. "Before I was born, my mom used this room for all her old stuff."
"Ginger and Rose were friends right?" Flynn asked, "we figured out that Rose was a fan of the guys, so your mom was probably a fan of them too!"
"She never mentioned them once before or played their music around me," Annie reasoned.
"Sunset Curve was playing the Hollywood Club scene around then," Julie mentioned. "That would explain why you can see them, there's the connection you were looking for."
"But my mom's alive, I don't understand," Annie objected.
"Dead or alive, the guys are connected to your moms, through music or something," Flynn told her. "The guys were the reason for you playing music again. Maybe your mom helped you as Rose did with Julie."
"You think my mom's planning all this?" Annie asked them, "like she knows?"
"Maybe," Flynn shrugged and Annie pondered on that.
Now Annie is curious if her mom knows about the guys and their existence. If she was a fan, wouldn't she recognize them?
"This is a sign!" Flynn exclaimed, "how many times have you been through your closet and didn't find this? It's a sign!"
"It's crazy, but she has a point, Annie," Julie told Annie. "It's not over."
"You're gonna lose them... and it sucks," Flynn admitted and Annie sighed, closing her eyes. "But they helped bring you both back to life. Now it's your turn to help them. Let them cross over."
Annie's never had to let anyone go because they always left her. She hates letting people go because they are a part of her. Letting go of Reggie, Alex, and Luke will be the toughest thing she's ever done and she doesn't know if she's ready for it.
——
Later that night, Annie and Julie went to the studio to find the guys lounging around sadly. Reggie was picking at his bass, Alex was balancing his drumsticks on his nose and Luke was laying against the couch.
"Snap out of it!" The girls yelled and Alex gasped, falling off the couch and the other boys looked up with alarm.
"Jeez, I think you broke Alex," Reggie mumbled.
"Do you guys wanna cross over or what?" Julie asked them, but they didn't respond.
"Get it together!" Annie clapped her hands at them.
"They're never gonna let us play the Orpheum," Luke grumbled.
"We're nobody," Alex said.
"We're less than nobody," Reggie remarked. "We have no bodies."
"Someone once told me that you don't ask for permission. You book gigs by doing," Julie explained and Luke grinned a little.
"That was me," Reggie smirked.
"No it wasn't," Julie shook her head.
"No, it wasn't," Luke repeated and Reggie looked away sadly.
"Yes, it was..." Reggie mumbled.
"This isn't over," Annie said. "We were brought together for a reason: to help each other."
"Yeah, but like Luke said, people don't just play the Orpheum because they want to," Alex reasoned.
"People don't," Annie grinned and Julie joined her.
"But ghosts do."
