Everything is a lie
(A/N: short chapter)
[HEATHER'S POV]
As Logan and I were riding through the waters, trying to get to Polyphemus's Island I couldn't stop thinking about what happened earlier. My head was still throbbing badly and I felt like I could pass out any minute, but I kept my eyes on the water, trying not to miss anything.
Logan noticed my face and gave me a concerned look. "Are you okay?" he asked. "You're never this silent. Like, ever."
I looked at Logan for a second before nodding, quickly looking ahead. "I'm fine," I told him. "Just tired."
But Logan kept staring at me, trying to find some kind of truth, something I wasn't telling him. But I just stayed silent and continued.
"What happened to you at Circe's?" he asked. "The least you could do is tell me."
I kept quiet for a minute until I finally sighed. "You really wanna know?"
Logan nodded. "Of course I do."
I kept my sight ahead as I spoke. "I've been having these dreams since we've come to camp. It's about this woman. I don't know who she is, but I realized that every time she appears, she takes me to places that we're gonna be shortly. This time, she didn't take me anywhere. It was just...dark."
"Dark?"
I nodded. "It was weird. She told me that there was a change of plans made. I didn't know what she was talking about so I asked her, but all she told me was, 'I have three years left to choose'."
"Choose?" Logan repeated, questioningly. "Choose what?"
"That's the thing, she never told me," I said. "I woke up before anything else could be said."
Logan sighed. "So...three years, we'll be 17 by then, huh? Wonder what's gonna happen by then."
I shrugged. "I don't know, but I don't want to think about it anymore."
Logan tried to speak again but said nothing as he just nodded. I then slowed down and reached inside one of the bags and pulled out a jar of beeswax. I took out two wads, balled them up, and gave the jar to Logan.
"What's this for?" he asked as he took out two small wads of beeswax.
"Make 'em bigger," I told him, referring to the wax. "And according to my knowledge of the Sea of Monsters, we're getting close to the Sirens. The beeswax will help us to block out their song."
Logan nodded before putting the beeswax in his ears. I did the same and sped up the boat so we could quickly go through the sirens.
"What if I wanna hear the siren song?" Logan asked.
I gave him a look. "You don't," I said. "The song will show your deepest wants and desires. It'll make you want to go to it. It's a trick so they can drown you. Whatever you do, don't listen to them."
Logan nodded once again and put the other piece of wax in his ears.
As we sped through, I noticed some rocks suspended above the water. Sharp rocks. I took a deep breath before going faster, trying to ignore the sirens as they tried to sing to us.
I reached for Logan's hand and gripped it tightly while my other hand was on the wheel. I noticed a few more sirens, about four of them on each rock, but even then I kept going.
Just keep going... I told myself. Just keep going...just a few more minutes and you're home free.
I looked over at Logan. He was watching the sirens as they were singing. I could not hear what they were singing luckily, but I held my brother's hand tighter just in case he was. Fortunately, his hand curled around mine, I sighed graciously.
I relaxed as we continued through the waters, trying to get through Scylla, but to my confusion, it felt like the more we rode through them, the longer it got. I thought we were gonna be out by now, but we weren't. A ton of more sirens appeared and it felt like I was going insane.
I looked back at Logan once again and he gave me a concerned and panicked look.
"What?" I asked him, but my voice felt drowned out.
"Heather..." he muttered. His voice felt far away, "Heather! Wake up...W̴̧̢̧͙̦̥͍͈̼͇̪̲͉̘̰̫̳͕̜̮͓̦̣͔̱̫̼͕̜̟̭̳̳̮̹̯̣͚͉͈̖̪̳̖̠͕̋͜͝ͅA̸̢̛͔͕̹̠͔̳̫̙͚͚̭̹̟̭̬̩̱̝͔͙̖̐͗̈́̈͋͒̓̔̈́̏̊̽̒̐̃̌̐̆̆̅̕̚͜͠K̶̛͙̖̦̞̙̊̅̓̉̔̄̀̊͌̈̈́̇́̾̌͗͌̆͑̌̀̐̓̂̈́̃͐̊́̊̎̃́͗̒̒̃͂̾̾͘̕̕͜͝͝͠͝͠Ȩ̸̯̘̬̝̻̦̥̦̗̣̥̯̰̠͊̿̐̓̋́͐̓̇̉͊̽̒̉͘̚̕ ̵̧̨͙̪̱̲̼̯̫͙̞̙̪̭̘͉͓͔̮͊́͆̈͛̀̒͗͑̇̓̑͊̏͆͋͋̾͆̿̊͌̐̃̂͗̎̆͂̈́́̇͐̚͘̕͝͠͝Ư̴̢̢̨̡͖̻͖̱̗͙͎̞̥̯̏̿̍́̅̀̂̍͂̈̉̃̍̈́́̓͋̀̍̎̉̽̀͗̐̐̔̄̔̒͌̒̄́̈́̿͘̕͝͝͝͝͝Ṕ̴̣̮͚̈̈́͑͆̍̔̎͛̎͂͌̚͜"
My vision got blurry as I continued to stare at him. I was awake. What was he talking about? I looked behind us and into the water.
Why are you denying it? A voice appeared in my head. It's only a matter of time, dear.
I looked confused. I touched the boat...it felt real. I touched the water–well a little bit–it felt real. So what was going on?
Wait...I touched the boat again. Why does it feel like this? It feels...fuzzy. And spiky. Like some grass...grass?
I turned to Logan again and I was startled at what replaced him. A woman was staring back at me. Her eyes were wide and so was her smile.
'I told you, darling.' the woman spoke. 'Choose, or you lose everyone you ever loved.'
I shook my head. 'No...no. NO!' I screamed. 'This is all a dream! Wake up! Come on, wake up! W̴̧̢̧͙̦̥͍͈̼͇̪̲͉̘̰̫̳͕̜̮͓̦̣͔̱̫̼͕̜̟̭̳̳̮̹̯̣͚͉͈̖̪̳̖̠͕̋͜͝ͅA̸̢̛͔͕̹̠͔̳̫̙͚͚̭̹̟̭̬̩̱̝͔͙̖̐͗̈́̈͋͒̓̔̈́̏̊̽̒̐̃̌̐̆̆̅̕̚͜͠K̶̛͙̖̦̞̙̊̅̓̉̔̄̀̊͌̈̈́̇́̾̌͗͌̆͑̌̀̐̓̂̈́̃͐̊́̊̎̃́͗̒̒̃͂̾̾͘̕̕͜͝͝͠͝͠Ȩ̸̯̘̬̝̻̦̥̦̗̣̥̯̰̠͊̿̐̓̋́͐̓̇̉͊̽̒̉͘̚̕ ̵̧̨͙̪̱̲̼̯̫͙̞̙̪̭̘͉͓͔̮͊́͆̈͛̀̒͗͑̇̓̑͊̏͆͋͋̾͆̿̊͌̐̃̂͗̎̆͂̈́́̇͐̚͘̕͝͠͝Ư̴̢̢̨̡͖̻͖̱̗͙͎̞̥̯̏̿̍́̅̀̂̍͂̈̉̃̍̈́́̓͋̀̍̎̉̽̀͗̐̐̔̄̔̒͌̒̄́̈́̿͘̕͝͝͝͝͝Ṕ̴̣̮͚̈̈́͑͆̍̔̎͛̎͂͌̚͜!"
I felt a hand tug me as I fell into a pool of darkness. I screamed as my eyes jumped open. I was taking shaking breaths as I looked around to see Percy, Annabeth, and Logan looking back at me with relieved faces.
"Heather!" Logan practically tackled me in a hug. Annabeth shushed him, but that didn't do anything.
"As much as I love a good sibling reunion," she said. "We still have to defeat Polyphemus and get Grover back.
I looked confused. "But...I thought we were...what happened to the sirens?"
Percy looked just as confused as I was. "We just passed them," he told me. "I just forgot you were unconscious for the whole thing."
I was now ever more confused. "I was what?"
"You passed out after you shadow traveled Clarisse's ship towards us," Annabeth explained. "Logan carried your unconscious body all the way here."
Logan shrugged. "I wasn't losing my sister. And I told you she was going to wake up!"
"Ugh," I groaned. "How long was I out?"
Percy shrugged. "About one, two days."
"Two days?"
Annabeth nodded. "Surprised you didn't die by now."
I sighed. "Well, I guess we're here?"
I looked over and there was Polyphemus's cave. I tried to stand up but kept on falling over. Logan and Annabeth helped me stand up straight until Logan just took to carrying me.
I can't afford to be feeling this weak. Two days without food and was probably–figuratively and literally–thrown into dangerous situations and where I was probably almost killed.
I watched as we made it closer to the shore. I summoned my bow and quiver, though it was very painful.
Well, if I'm dying, I'm not going down without a fight.
