A dolphin is my brother...literally
As if things couldn't get any stupider, Logan, Percy, Annabeth, and even Tyson decided to sneak onto the quest with me and Clarisse. To say I was annoyed was a bit of an understatement. I know Hermes told me, but I didn't think they were stupid enough to actually do it.
The skeletons handed them some snacks from out back before going back to doing their jobs.
"You better be lucky we saved your sorry asses," Clarisse sneered. "Tantalus expelled you guys indefinitely. Mr. D even said that if you guys show yourselves at camp again, he would turn you into squirrels and run you over with his van."
The four of them stayed quiet as the skeletons just roamed around us. Percy then looked at me.
"Then how is she allowed to stay, huh?" he asked.
Clarisse looked at me. "I asked her to join me," she explained.
Logan sat back in his chair. "And the favoritism strikes again," he muttered. I sighed.
"Logan, I am not Clarisse's favorite camper, you know that" I told him. I then looked at Tyson. "And I thought you said you would willingly drown before you went on a quest with him. No offence, Tyson."
Tyson shook his head while Logan glared at me. "And how do you know I said that?" he asked. "You weren't there."
I pointed my thumb at Clarisse. "She told me."
Clarisse nodded, causing Logan to groan. "It doesn't matter," he said dismissively. "We're going on this quest, getting the golden fleece, and saving Grover before he becomes goat stew."
My brows narrowed in confusion. "Wha-"
"On my dead body!" Clarisse shouted, pointing at him. "This is my quest, ocean boy, and none of you are going to stop me!"
"But Clarisse-" Annabeth started getting up. "-Luke is after the fleece too, he's going to use it to reform Kronos and-"
"Let him come," Clarisse sat back down in her seat. "We'll be ready for him."
Annabeth sighed before sitting back down as well. I kept looking at them.
"What do you mean you're going to save Grover?" I asked. "What happened to him?"
Annabeth tried to speak, but Logan interrupted her. "Oh, now you're suddenly interested in him. How sweet."
I gave him a deadpan look. "Grover is my best friend," I said through gritted teeth. I then looked at Percy and Annabeth. "What happened to him?"
Percy cleared his throat. "I had a dream about him getting captured by a cyclops and now he's in the Sea of Monsters, we're trying to save him AND get the fleece."
I shook my head. I then looked at Clarisse. "We're getting close to the Sea of Monsters," I said. "I think I have enough strength in me to do one more shadow travel, but we have to do it at the right time."
I showed them the map I made. It wasn't perfect, but it was enough. "We're going through Scylla and Charybdis. We plan to slow out trail until we're in the right spot where she has enough water to spit us out before we get crushed."
Annabeth nodded. "But how will you be able to slow down long enough for that to happen?"
Clarisse and I looked at each other. "We'll figure this out as we go," I grabber Eris and held her tightly to my chest. "For now, get some rest, Clarisse and I will handle the rest of the way."
The four of them were reluctant. But they got up and walked out of the room. The captain closed the door behind them. I kept petting Eris as I noticed Clarisse sitting in silence.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
Clarisse groaned. "I can't believe it," she muttered. "On top of fighting for the fleece, now we have to fight to save Grover as well. Can this get any fucking worse!"
I looked down for a moment, thinking about something. "I'll go see if the engines are strong enough to power through Charybdis. I'll give you some time alone."
With that I left Clarisse alone. I know it wasn't a good idea at the time, but we were both worried about Grover, I think we need some time to process it.
Eris looked up at me. "What's wrong?"
I groaned. "Nothing, it's just...we're just worried is all."
Eris tilted her head, confused. "Is it about Grover?"
I nodded. "He's my best friend; I can't not worry about him. I just...need some air."
I was about to open the hatch to the engine booth when I heard a voice behind me.
"Now we're talking to animals now?" they said. "How normal."
I looked over my shoulder to see my brother leaning against the wall. I raised my eyebrow, confused.
"Blessing of Artemis," I simply said before taking a deep breath. "Aren't you supposed to be in your room with Percy and Tyson?"
Logan walked towards me. He stopped a few feet away from me before shrugging. "Couldn't sleep."
I hummed before looking down at the hatch. "So...why were you with Poseidon earlier?"
"Why were you with Hades earlier?"
"Alone time."
"Same."
We stared at each other for another minute. I sighed. "Look, I'm sorry for leaving and not telling you. It was wrong of me to only leave a note and not give you a full explanation. I really hope you can forgive me."
Logan was silent before he stuffed his hands in his pockets. "I went to Poseidon to see what he knows about Luke." he told me. "And since we know that his ship was very close to camp, it's safe to say that he knows something we don't. Or he has picked up one of his spies."
"Spies?"
Logan nodded. "He told us that he has 'friends' that keep him updated with important things going on in camp, which is how he got the coordinates for the Sea of Monsters."
I sighed. "So we can't trust anyone in camp?" I muttered. "Oh joy."
Eris shifted herself on my chest. She then started to fall asleep, snoring silently. I looked at her for a minute.
"I didn't mean to be dismissive of you," Logan's voice rang in my ears. "I promise you...it's just, you are going off, joining the huntresses, leaving me behind just made me feel..."
"Angry?"
"Upset is a calmer word," my brother corrected. "But yeah. I was."
I carefully put Eris down before putting my hands in my own pockets. "You had every right to be, trust me," I told my brother. "Though, we're trying to save Grover. We should at least be on good terms so this quest can be successful."
Logan stared at the floor for a moment before looking back at me. We stood in silence for a long time until he just straight-up hugged me. I was surprised for a second before I instantly hugged him back.
"Well, it's a good thing I already forgave you," he told me. "Sorry for being so antagonizing about Grover."
"It's alright," I said as we separated. "I expected it."
Logan winced quietly. "Should we go back to the others?" he asked.
I looked at the hatch for a moment. "Yeah," I admitted. "But I should still check the engine to make sure it's-"
As soon as I begun talking, Tyson came into view. Once he noticed me and Logan, he smiled widely. Why is he so adorable for a Cyclops?
"Brother!" he said cheerfully before turning to me and giving me a bigger smile than the one before. "Hello, Poppet girl!"
"Hey!" I said before I did a double take. "Wait what?"
"Yeah! Percy told me that his mom said that you remind her of a poppet she had when she was little."
I paused for a moment before chuckling. "That woman has now become my favorite person despite me not meeting her–what are you doing here, Tyson?"
"Oh! The ship is under attack, I'm going to fix the reactors under the ship."
My eyes widened as Logan and I looked at each other, he was giving me the same look I was giving him. "Holy shit, how did we not realize this?"
"No time to talk, we have to go to the others!"
I turned back to Tyson and Eris. "Eris, if things get too dangerous, try to shadow travel Tyson somewhere safe, okay? Tyson, be careful down there."
Both Tyson and Eris nodded as Logan and I ran to the top of the ship to see them trying to fight off Charybdis.
Clarisse noticed me. "Can you do another shadow thing?" she asked.
I nodded. I then put my hands on the railings.
"There's no time for her to do another shadow travel," Annabeth yelled at Clarisse. "We're too close to them now!"
I looked over the ship and noticed some teeth under us. I then realized Annabeth was right, I couldn't shadow travel out of here. Even if I tried, Scylla would find some way to distract me and potentially strike down everyone else before finally getting to me.
I looked at Annabeth and Clarisse. "Where are the torches?"
"Thrown overboard!" Clarisse yelled back. I looked at her in shock and disbelief. "What? I wasn't thinking at the moment!"
I groaned. "Percy, Logan!" both boys looked at me. "Can you control the water, try and make Charybdis swallow as much as she can?"
Logan and Percy looked at each other before they both ran over to the railing on the other side of me. They tried to lift the waves, but because of the constant movements, they couldn't.
"I can't!" Logan yelled.
"Me either!" Percy added.
I groaned. I looked up as a loud growling came from above us. Once I looked up I saw about three heads poking out, all of them looking at us. If I wasn't as pale as a ghost by the end of this, then I was now as white as Casper the friendly ghost.
"Oh shit..." I muttered.
I summoned my arrows and ran to Clarisse. "We need to shoot this thing down."
"Yeah, I got that!" Clarisse retorted. "And we need to do it quickly, the ship is already tearing apart enough as it is!"
I dug in my quiver and pulled out a bottle of purple liquid. Given to me by a daughter of Hecate, pour it on the arrows and they become literal bombs. I poured about half of the bottle on my arrows and the tails instantly turned purple. I then grabbed one and launched it at Charybdis, blowing off one of her teeth.
I flinched. "I did not think that would work!" I said before grabbing another arrow. "Watch out for Scylla!"
Logan looked up and finally noticed the monster. I tossed him an extra bow and quiver filled with arrows (I have Zoë to thank for that when I get back.) as well as the purple liquid (have to thank the daughter of Hecate for that.) and he tried shooting at Scylla while she kept trying to eat him. Clarisse finally got the canons working and started firing at Charybdis along with me. I looked over at Logan and he was jumping away from a mouth that tried eating him.
Suddenly, we heard screaming. I panicked, thinking it was Logan, until I noticed something blue whirled past me. I looked to see the dead captain getting dragged up into Scylla's cave. I shuddered.
"May he rest in peace...again," Clarisse spoke as I nodded in agreement.
Logan ran to my side. "Can skeletons re-die?" he yelled. "Or are they zombies? Can zombies re-die?"
"Re-die isn't a word, Logan," I told him. "And I don't know!"
Suddenly, Scylla snapped up three more dead undead skeletons just as Percy and Annabeth made it to us. The ship swung more, causing some of the soldiers to fall overboard.
"Where's Tyson?" Percy yelled out.
"Down trying to fix the engine," I said. "Eris is down watching him, though I don't know how long they'll survive down there."
Percy looked worried for Tyson, and I couldn't blame him.
Logan started breathing heavily. "I have to go overboard."
I looked at him. "Are you crazy?"
Logan shrugged. "Kind of, but that's not the point, I know how to stall Charybdis enough to get you guys through."
I shook my head. "What are you planning? You better not have a fucking death wish."
Logan sighed. "It's safe, I promise you," he said. "In fact, I'm gonna need you for this."
This was going to be the opposite of safe, but I sighed before nodding. "Fine, I'll come with you."
Logan nodded before taking off his quiver and handing it to Percy. "Good, now, what's a good spot?"
I looked over the ship and noticed a spot where it looked like a couple of fish were going in a small kill circle.
"That looks a bit safe," I said, looking at Logan as he walked next to me. "But be careful, Charybdis might not see you, but this is close to Scylla's cave. She might sense you."
Logan nodded before closing his eyes, taking a few steps back, and jumping into the water. We were edging closer and closer to Charybdis. I was looking over at Percy, who was trying hard to work his bow and arrow. Annabeth and Clarisse were still firing cannon balls at Charybdis, who was just shooting them back at the ship, making it wobble over some more. Tyson and Eris were still down there in the engine room.
I screamed as I dodged Scylla, who was very close to eating me, but I tipped over the edge and just as Scylla snapped at me again, I fell overboard.
Knowing good and well that Scylla can swim, and I can't, I panicked. I panicked even more when a dolphin brushed past me. The dolphin got in front of me.
'Calm down, please!' the dolphin told me.
'Calm down?' I asked. 'Calm down? I can't swim, I'm in Scylla's lair, and super close to Charybdis and you're telling me to calm down?'
The dolphin closed his eyes, and a large bubble appeared around both of us. I gasped sharply before coughing out the water that got in my throat.
'Now can you calm down?'
"That depends. Why is a dolphin in the sea of monsters?"
'It's me! Logan!'
I flinched back. "What the fuck?" I spoke. "How are you a dolphin?"
'Blessing of Poseidon,' Logan answered. 'Guess I am a favorite after all. Though it was done a bit too late for my liking.'
I raised my eyebrow. "So, what is this plan of yours?"
'We're going to go to Polyphemus' Island by sea.'
"We're doing what now?"
'You agreed to this!' Logan retorted.
"Yeah, but that was before I realized you can turn into a freaking dolphin! And we can't just leave the others behind!" I counted-pointed.
Logan sighed. 'I told them the plan beforehand,' he explained. 'The only one who would be mad about it probably Clarisse for taking her quest mate away.'
"You think?"
'Shut up.'
"No."
'Okay, are you helping me with this, or not?'
I gave my brother a deadpan look for a moment before sighing. "Fine! But you owe me big time for this!"
'I know. Now, hop on my back, I'll keep the bubble going for as long as I can.'
I hesitated for a moment before jumping onto his back, creating a harness with the shadows. I don't know how fast dolphins can go, but I guess logic means nothing to my brother cause as soon as I attached myself and was ready to go, he sped out of Scylla's cave as fast as I could say Gesundheit.
I looked back to see the fight resuming. I hated myself for leaving them, but I guess I didn't have a choice since I wasn't leaving my brother to do something dangerous...again.
So, we sped off to Polyphemus's Island, hoping to get there in time to save Grover and get the fleece.
But, because of my luck as a demigod, it would take longer than I thought.
