Chapter Forty-Nine

(Can't Explain)

Ares POV

I found her.

I didn't talk to her.

I just left her there.

She needs time.

A lot of people need time.

Some more than others.

But I'm in shock nonetheless.

She just bolted.

Like, what?

I stand on the porch, waiting.

I'm no god of prophecy—such as Apollo—but I know her well enough that she wouldn't just leave.

Unlike Lola.

I can't believe my eyes.

Sure, I knew that she would come back, just not like this.

A dark purple cut that's about the length of my forearm.

I can tell that she'd been crying, (and I won't push her on that), but I can't explain the purple.

"You okay?" I ask, stepping off the porch and squeeze her icy cold hands.

But she won't meet my eyes.

"No." she shivers. "I- I dunno, how can you just-"

"Q and A in the house?" I breathe. "But please, never do that again."

"Okay."
