VALERIE DIDN'T HESITATE WHEN IT came to declining his call. it was immediately after she got the notification. she also somehow knew that he would try again so she was patently waiting for the pop up on her screen. she thought that for a one hundred percent fact that she was going to decline it once she saw it again, but when the option to answer or ignore came up again on her phone, she stopped. her finger hovered over the ignore button, wondering if she actually wanted to answer him. and after ten long seconds, she clicked the answer button.

it was a video call so she immediately turned off her video, while chris kept his on. he had his phone propped up on his desk as he spun from side to side in his gaming chair.

"you actually answered." she heard the static of his voice as her phone tried to adjust to the call. she almost couldn't understand him. he then started to play some kind of game on the computer, making her feel like he wasn't going to listen to whatever she had to say.

"i did, thank you, captain obvious," she responded, wanting to know what the whole point of this call was going to be. why the hell out of anyone he could have called, did he choose her? it made no sense whatsoever.

"whatcha doing right now?" his eyes never left his computer as he spoke, making valerie almost hang up right then and there.

"waiting for you to say what you called me to say." she answered him in utter annoyance. she really wanted to know why he had to call her, also why she answered in the first place...

"well, actually, i originally was going to text you to tell you that matt and nick would like you to come over and hang out? watch a movie or something?" his pitch raised slightly on the last word as if he wasn't quite sure what he was supposed to be asking her.

"depends. are you going to be there?" a quick smirk formed across her face, and she kind of wished that he could see it.

"considering it's also my house, yes i will be."

"looks like i won't be there, sorry." it wasn't until after she said the words, when she started lowkey hoping for a reason to go over there. she was thinking of anything he could possibly say that she could twist into something that resulted in her coming over.

"c'mon, valerie. i won't be annoying or whatever," he said, changing the tone of his voice slightly. it was like he was really trying to convince her to go.

"why are you pleading?"

"because i- they really want you to come." he was going to say something completely different. something along the lines of "because i was put in charge of trying to get you over here." which for some reason he was in charge of that, but it just sounded weird, so he didn't. instead, it now made it seem like he was the one who wanted her to come over, he didn't quite catch that outcome of it though.

"you mean you really want me to come over." she said confidently, knowing he slipped up and there was no way he could easily take back his words now.

the accusation pissed him off because who was she to say something about him when it wasn't even true? he was not gonna say that. trying not to look away from his game, chris said, "no, that's dumb as fuck. why would i actually want you here?"

after a few seconds of silence between the two, valerie caved, "fine, i'll come, but only because you don't want me there."

and there it was, the twist.
