SUMMER PUT SOMETHING COMFY on and chris texted her that hes outside her house. she smiled and ran downstairs and locked the door. they greeted each other and began to walk.

they walked down the quiet road, the streetlights flickering faintly as they made their way toward the small lake chris had mentioned. summer tugged at the sleeves of her oversized hoodie, her fingers fidgeting with the edges. the air was crisp, the kind of cold that made your breath visible, but it wasn’t unbearable. it felt nice.

"you cold?" chris asked, glancing at her. his voice was soft, almost shy.

"not really," summer replied, her eyes focused on the ground.

"you sure? i can give you my jacket."

she shook her head quickly, smiling. "im fine, really. but thanks."

they reached the lake a few minutes later. it was quiet, the water still and reflecting the faint glow of the moon above. there was a small bench nearby, so they sat down, the wooden planks creaking under their weight.

"its nice here," summer said, pulling her knees up to her chest.

"yeah. i used to come here a lot when i needed to think." chris leaned back, looking up at the sky. "it’s peaceful."

"makes sense. it feels like... the kind of place you’d come to just be alone for a while."

chris nodded, then turned to her. "but its nicer now, you know? being here with you."

summer felt her cheeks heat up, and she quickly looked away, pretending to focus on the water. "you’re so corny, you know that?"

he laughed, the sound light and genuine. "yeah, but you’re smiling."

she rolled her eyes, but she was smiling, and he was right.

a few moments passed, the silence stretching between them but not in an uncomfortable way. summer glanced at him, taking in the way his hair fell into his eyes, the way his fingers drummed against his knee absentmindedly.

"chris," she said suddenly, her voice quieter than she intended.

he turned to her, eyebrows raised. "yeah?"

she hesitated, her heart pounding. the words were there, sitting on the tip of her tongue, but they felt heavy.

"i..." she started, then stopped.

"you what?" he prompted, leaning in slightly.

summer let out a breath, forcing herself to meet his eyes. "i like you."

his expression shifted, surprise flickering across his face. he just stared at her, and the longer the silence stretched, the more panic bubbled in her chest.

"i mean," she started quickly, her words rushing out, "i didn’t mean to make it weird or anything. forget i said anything—"

but before she could finish, chris leaned forward, closing the space between them and pressing his lips to hers.

it wasn’t rushed or uncertain; it was soft, warm, and filled with everything he hadn’t been able to say. her breath hitched, and for a moment, she froze in surprise before kissing him back.

when they pulled apart, his face was close to hers, his eyes searching hers as he smiled. "does that answer your question?"

she blinked, her cheeks burning, but she couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped her. "yeah. yeah, i think it does."

"good," he said softly, his hand brushing hers before lacing their fingers together.

and as they sat there, the lake quiet and still around them, summer couldn’t help but think that this was exactly where she was meant to be.
