"I'm disappointed in you, chris," marylou says through a sigh, clearly upset that chris resorted to violence out of everything. chris knew that this was going to happen, but it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt hearing his mom talk to him like this. "you hit a boy, i can't believe it."

          chris stressfully rubs his forehead as he rests on the kitchen island, marylou leaning on the counter in front of him with folded arms. "mom—"

          "suspended?" she cuts him off with a disheartened tone of voice, a crease between his eyebrows. "you're graduating next year and you're fighting?" marylou scoffs and chris just drops his gaze to the ground.

"i'm sorry, okay?" chris tries to sound as apologetic as he possibly can considering how a large part of him doesn't regret it. the only thing he regrets is upsetting marylou. "noah kept on pissing me off, and—"

"noah?" marylou repeats with that same tone of voice, making chris clamp his eyes shut. "you chose to get suspended over noah? the same one on your lacrosse team?" she questions and chris nods his head in response. "chris, i simply cannot do this with you right now."

he sharply exhales as he watches marylou straighten her posture and walk away. chris knows he's temporarily messed things up for himself, but there's not really anything he can do to fix it. chris remains in the same position, until matt enters the kitchen with a concerned expression across his face.

"chris..." matt trails off, finding his way to where marylou was previously standing; he sounds just as concerned as their mom. "what'd mom say?" he asks chris, knowing that wherever marylou said wasn't positive at all.

chris sighs, running his hand through his hair before his hands return to the island. "she's pissed at me," he blankly states, nervously chewing on his bottom lip. "but," chris pauses for a second. "nate did say that it's cool i—you know, with miks."

          matt approvingly nods his head, almost clapping his hands at his brother considering how it seemed like nathan was never going to let it happen. "have you texted her because she was really worried about you," matt questions and he watches as chris' face practically drops.

          chris slowly shakes his head, reaching for the front pocket of his gray sweatpants and pulling his phone out of it.
