❛ including chris? ❜

For as long as mikayla's been alive, she's never had the best relationship with her parents, as well as the same going for nate. their mom and dad aren't absolutely horrible, but leaving their children alone for months and coming back only for a couple days isn't the best example of being good parents.
they'll leave the country for a business trip, leaving their teenagers some money to last them a while. it mostly does, and nathan or mikayla are expected to text them if they need more. sometimes they'll text them back, asking how they're doing and how school is, but other times they'll just send it to their bank account without a single message.
so the fact that mikayla and nate are sat on the couch opposite their parents is quite unbelievable since they haven't been here since the start of summer break. miks looks at nate, noticing how he looks mad but also disappointed.
"we're here to give you a gift," their mom says to nate, brushing her hands over her pencil skirt. "since you're graduating soon," she forces a smile, taking a wrapped gift box out of her louis vuitton purse.
nathan slowly shakes his head, leaning back into his seat. "i graduate in may..." his words trail off, folding his arms. "it's basically october. so what the actual fuck?" he snaps and their dad immediately sighs at nate's attitude.
"language nathan," he mumbles but nate just clicks his tongue. with the way their parents act towards them, mikayla's slowly starting to understand why nate seems to be so overprotective over the idea of mikayla being in a relationship, especially between her and chris.
"so how long are you guys staying?" mikayla asks her parents and they glance at each other, silence falling over the unhappy family. she rolls her tongue inside of her cheek, realizing that the words about to leave their parents' mouths aren't going to be good in any way, shape, or form.
their mom sharply exhales, pushing her brunette curls behind her hair. "today..." she sighs and mikayla frustratedly rolls her eyes. "we're sorry, we just wanted to drop this off," her tone isn't sincere and apologetic at all.
"of course," mikayla loudly scoffs, harshly rising from her seated position. she hates that her life seems to be going sideways ever since this school year's started, wishing it could've been different somehow. she blames herself, and it hurts her. miks sighs, storming off from the living room and running up the staircase, wanting to escape from this living nightmare.
Mikayla feels like shit. for some reason that she cannot seem to wrap herself around, she feels as if her parents constantly abandoning them is her fault, mikayla genuinely doesn't know why. she just huffs, laying on her stomach while watching shameless on her tv.
she's currently rewatching season two, the best season in her own words, but for some reason mikayla just misses watching it with chris. after all, he's the one who got her to watch the series in the first place, so she has her reasons to miss him. but of course, mikayla will keep denying it no matter what. she needs to get over him but after having a crush on chris in the past when they were younger, it seems almost impossible especially because they've kissed multiple times.
as mikayla keeps her attention on the netflix show in front of her, watching the thanksgiving episode, her door slowly creaks open. it reveals nate and he stands in the doorway, waiting for miks to invite him in since he's aware of how much she dislikes him in her room.
"hey," nathan mumbles, shoving his hands into the pockets of his sweatpants. miks doesn't glance at him — she doesn't mean to act bitchy, but seeing her parents for the first time in months means that she's going to be in a consistent grumpy mood. "they're gone," he says through a sigh, not expecting them to stay anyways.
mikayla dryly chuckles, picking up the remote. her fingers dance over the buttons for a couple moments, then choosing to pause it. "good," she utters. for the whole of mikayla's life, she just wanted to have a mother who properly cared about her, which is why marylou is so great. she stepped up and she's always been there for the doe siblings.
"do you want me to invite everyone over?" nate asks but mikayla's face scrunches up in confusion.
"including chris?" she hums, making him narrow his eyes. she pushes her hair behind her ear, waiting for nathan to respond. she's only specifically bringing up chris because she has a small feeling that his sudden change in attitude is because of nate. "i truly find it funny if you," her eyes look her brother up and down. "invite chris over. since you, are the one who keeps telling me to stay away from him and shit."
"i just don't want you in a relationship with him. you don't need to 'stay away' from chris," nate frustratedly runs his hands through his brunette hair, acknowledging how his sister is somewhat correct. "and i'm inviting everyone," he puts emphasis on the last word, before exiting from mikayla's doorway.
"GO FUCK YOURSELF!" mason yells at matt as they play on nathan's xbox. they're playing call of duty, and mason's obviously losing, taking his anger out on nate's controller. he angrily clicks on the buttons, narrowing his eyes at the tv screen.
matt's completely unbothered, laughing to himself even as he sits on the couch in the living room next to the ginger. maria's laying down, her head on matt's lap while her legs rest on mason's, mindlessly scrolling on her phone.
nate sits on the carpeted floor, watching the game continue and how mason's getting absolutely obliterated right now. he won't comment on it though, knowing how easy it would be for mason to kick him in a fit of rage.
mikayla's on the other couch, sharing it with lucille on her lap, giggling at the screen but for some odd reason, she cannot stop staring at chris in the corner of the room, sat on a wooden chair. what the fuck is wrong with you? mikayla asks herself in her head, mentally slapping herself whenever her gaze shifts to the youngest triplet.
"you're getting absolutely shat on," lucille says to mason through a chuckle, watching as he takes one hand off of the controller to flip his friend off. she does the same, taking a sip of the cup of sprite she bought from mcdonald's.
maria pats matt on the lap, approving of his skills, even if it's only gaming. "friends!" she announces, and matt immediately stops playing, giving mason the opportunity to finally kill him. "did you guys know they canceled homecoming?"
lucille dramatically gasps, placing her hand on her chest. realistically though, she couldn't give a shit that there's no more homecoming since she finds school dances extremely stupid. "were we even gonna go anyway?" she lets a chuckle of disbelief escape her lips.
"still though, i wanted to do that cute, girly shit," miks pouts her lips and she glances at maria and lucille. "trying on dresses. you know, stuff like that?" she sighs, rubbing her temples.
"i would've loved that," maria tells them, groaning quietly but matt just strokes her head to comfort her. "now we have to wait for december for the stupid winter formal," she says with her tone being very judgemental.
but honestly, winter formal isn't that bad, it's just nothing compared to prom or homecoming and the thing is, mikayla hasn't even thought of a date. it may be in two months, but she still feels like she needs someone to go with. for any of the dances they've attended in the past, lucille goes with mason and now it seems like matt and maria are serious — it's most likely that they're gonna go together.
mikayla didn't even know that she'd be this stressed over a date, but she is. she thinks to herself that maybe if she never gave chris a chance in the fake relationship, she could be going with someone else. but of course, her fake relationship has such a negative butterfly effect.
"school dances are fucking overrated," nick complains as he enters the living room from the kitchen. he has a bag of small fries in his hand, plopping himself on the floor next to nathan.
"correct," chris adds on and miks wants to roll her eyes at him. after all, chris previously went to all the dances with talia so there's no reason for him to be agreeing with his brother.
matt narrows his eyes at his brother, then back at mikayla. "but didn't you literally say—OW! what the fuck dude," he groans, probably because nick just harshly pinched his exposed skin (he's wearing shorts).
mikayla's face twists ups, confused as to what matt was about to say, but she knows she's going to bring it up later. "guyssss," miks drags out her word, looking at her friends, but specifically matt. "can we go cvs. i lowkey wanna get snacks to get through school tomorrow."
a dimpled grin grows on lucille's face, slowly rotating her head to look at matt. it's an ongoing joke that matt's the designated driver when mason can literally drive himself, refusing to because he's lazy, and it always irritates matt. he throws his head back onto the couch, looking down at maria and her doe eyes. "oh my god, fine. everybody get your shit."
