•Chapter six•
~Skin~
———————————
Dean pulled the impala right beside a gas tank at a gas station as Sam read emails on his phone, and August looked around in her car seat.
"Alright." Dean started as he turned off the engine. "I figure we'd hit tucumcari by lunch, then head south, hit bisbee by midnight." Dean said, then looked over at Sam seeing he wasn't paying attention. "Sam wears women's underwear."
"I'm listening. I'm just busy." Sam stated.
"Busy doing what?" Dean questioned.
"Reading e-mails." Sam stated as dean opened his door and got out.
"E-mails from who?" Dean asked before making his way around the impala to the gas pump.
"From my friends at Stanford." Sam said.
"You're kidding. You still keep in touch with your college buddies?" Dean said as he grabbed the gas nozzle.
"Why not?" Sam questioned.
"Well..." Dean started, then made his way back around to Sams side. "What exactly do you tell them, you know, about where you been, what you been doing?" He questioned, just before he saw august reaching for him through her rolled down window.
Dean smiled at her and reached into the window, playing with her.
"I tell them I'm on a road trip with my big brother and his daughter. I tell them I needed some time off after Jess." Sam stated to his big brother.
"Well, so you lie to them." Dean said.
"No." Sam shook his head. "I just don't tell them everything."
"Yeah. That's called lying." Dean stated. "Hey, man, I get it. Telling them the truth is far worse."
"So what am I supposed to do, just cut everybody out of my life?" Sam asked.
Dean made a face, then slightly shrugged.
"You're serious?" Sam questioned.
"Look, it sucks. But in a job like this, you can't get close to people, period." Dean said.
"You're kind of antisocial. You know that?" Sam told him.
"No, I'm not. Tell him august, say 'Daddy is not antisocial.'" Dean leaned into the window to his daughter making her smile widely at him.
Dean chuckled and kissed her head before pulling out of the window.
"God." Sam said after a moment of silence.
"What?" Dean asked, leaning down into Sams window.
"This e-mail from this girl Rebecca Warren, one of those friends of mine." Sam said. "I went to school with her and her brother Zach. She says Zachs been charged with murder." He told dean. "He's been arrested for killing his girlfriend. Rebecca says he didn't do it. But it sounds like the cops have a pretty good case."
"Dude, what kind of people you hanging out with?" Dean questioned his brother.
"No, man. I know Zach. He's no killer." Sam stated.
"Well, maybe you know Zach as well as he knows you." Dean shrugged.
"They're in St. Louis. We're going." Sam said.
Dean chuckled.
"I'm sorry about your buddy, okay? But this does not sound like our kind of problem."
"It is our problem. They're my friends."
"St. Louis is 400 miles behind us, sam." Dean stated.
Sam gave his brother a look, unintentionally giving him the puppy dog eyes, that August had picked up from him.
Dean sighed.
~~~
August babbled in Sams arms as they stood at the door, having just knocked on it.
A moment later, it opened revealing a blonde girl.
"Oh my god. Sam." She chuckled.
"Well, if it isn't little Becky." Sam smiled.
"You know what you can do with that little Becky Crap." The girl, Becky told him, just before she saw August. "Oh wow. Is she...?"
"Oh! No!" Sam shook his head. "No!"
"She's mine." Dean spoke up, holding his hand out to Becky. "Dean— older brother."
Becky smiled and shook deans hand.
"Hi." She chuckled.
"Hi." Dean smiled back.
"I got your e-mail." Sam said.
"I didn't think that you'd come here." Becky stated.
"We're here to help." Sam told her. "Whatever we can do."
"Come in." Becky stepped to the side, letting them into the house.
"Nice place." Dean said.
"It's my parents'." Becky said. "I was crashing here for the long weekend when everything happened. I decided to take the semester off. I'm gonna stay until Zachs free." She told them.
"Where are your folks?" Sam asked.
"They live in Paris for half the year, so they're on their way home now for the trial. Do you guys want a beer or something?" Becky asked as they were going towards the kitchen.
"Hey." Dean pointed towards her.
"No, thanks." Sam shot him down.
Dean quietly huffed.
"So...tell us what happened." Sam said.
August curiously looked between the three young adults. Dean had a hard time choosing wether or not to put her hearing aids in that morning because they wouldn't really be anywhere but on the road. He ended up putting them in anyway, and he guess it was a good thing now.
"Well, um, Zach had come home, and he found Emily tied to a chair. And she was beaten up and bloody, and she wasn't breathing. And so he...he called 911. And the police, they showed up, and...and they arrested him." Becky explained. "But the thing is, the only way that Zach could have killed Emily is if he was in two places at the same time. The police, they have a video. It's from the security tape from across the street. And it shows Zach coming home at 10:30. Now, Emily was killed just after that, but I swear he was here with me, having a few beers until at least after midnight."
"You know, maybe we could see the crime scene— Zachs house." Sam said, gently bouncing august in his arms.
"We could?" Dean questioned.
"Why? What could you do?" Becky asked Sam.
"Well, me, not much. But deans a cop." Sam told her.
Dean chuckled as Becky looked over at him.
"A detective, actually." He said.
"Really? Where?" Becky asked.
"Bisbee, Arizona." Dean nodded. "But I'm off duty now."
"I don't know. You guys, it's so nice to offer, but I just— I don't know." Becky said as she shook her head.
"Beck, look. I know Zach didn't do this. Now, we have to find a way to prove that he's innocent." Sam told her.
"Okay." Becky nodded. "I'm gonna go get the keys." She turned and started down the hallway.
Dean whistled as he walked around his brother.
"Oh, yeah, man, you're a real straight shooter with your friends." He stated sarcastically.
"Look, Zach and Becky need our help." Sam said.
"I just don't think this is our kind of problem." Dean stated.
"Two places at once?" Sam questioned. "We've looked into less." He stated.
Dean sighed, looking down at august who had her hand in her mouth, looking around the room.
~~~
August's hand had been replaced with her binky as they were driving down the road, and were now parking in front of Zach's house.
All three adults got out of the impala, and Dean got August out, leaving her binky in her mouth because he knew as soon as he took it away, she would start crying.
"You're sure this is okay?" Becky asked dean.
"Yeah." Dean nodded. "I am an officer of the law." He said just before they started across the street.
Becky unlocked the door to the house, then pushed it open. Sam and Dean went in, but Becky stayed by the door, which was understandable, considering everything was a mess and there was blood everywhere.
Dean gently pushed August's head into his chest.
Even though she didn't completely understand, he still didn't want her seeing that kind of stuff.
"Beck, you want to wait outside?" Sam asked, seeing Becky still by the door.
"No. I want to help." Becky stated as she ducked under the caution tape, coming into the house.
"Tell us what else the police said." Sam said.
"Well...there was no sign of a break-in."Becky stated. "They say that Emily let her attacker in. And the lawyers are already talking about a plea bargain." She explained, holding back her tears for only a second before letting out a sob.
August whined a little, and Dean gently shushed her, rubbing her back a little.
"Look, beck...if Zach didn't do this, it means someone else did. Any idea who?" Sam gently asked.
Becky shook her head for a moment.
"Um, there was something. About a week before, somebody broke in here and stole some clothes— Zachs clothes. And the police, they don't think it's anything. I mean, we're not that far from downtown. I mean, sometimes people get robbed." Becky explained.
Dean looked out the window as they heard a dog howling and barking. He moved to the door and stood in the doorway, watching the dog.
August looked up towards the dog and Dean couldn't help but glance at her.
"You know, that used to be the sweetest dog." Becky said as she had come up behind dean.
"What happened?" Dean asked, gently turning august away from the animal.
"He just changed."
"Do you remember when he changed?"
"I guess around the time of the murder." Becky said.
Dean stepped back into the house, but Becky stayed by the door.
Sam was in the kitchen, looking at picture on the fridge. A picture of him, Becky, and Zach.
Dean made his way to his brother.
"So the neighbors dog went psycho." Dean told Sam. "Right around the time Zach's girlfriend was killed."
"Animals can have a sharp sense of the paranormal." Sam stated.
"Maybe Fido saw something." Dean said.
"So you think maybe this is our kind of problem?" Sam questioned.
"No. Probably not." Dean shook his head. "But we should look at the security tape just to make sure."
"Yeah."
"Yeah." Dean looked down at august, gently bouncing her just before Becky came over. "So the tape— the security footage? Think maybe your lawyers could get their hands on it? I just don't have that kind of jurisdiction." Dean said.
"I've already got it." Becky stated. "I didn't want to say anything in front of a cop."
Dean chuckled as Sam raised his brows.
"I, um, I stole it off the lawyers desk. I just had to see it for myself." Becky explained.
"Alright." Dean smiled, then followed after Becky.
Sam looked back the picture on the fridge before following after them.
~~~
August sat in deans lap playing with his fingers as they sat and watched the tape.
"Here he comes." Becky spoke up.
"22:04– thats just after 10:00." Dean stated. "You said time off death was about 10:30." He looked towards Becky.
"Our lawyers hired some kind of video expert. He says the tape's authentic. It wasn't tampered with." Becky explained.
"Hey, Beck, can we take those beers now?" Sam spoke up.
"Oh, sure." Becky got up off the couch, then started towards the kitchen.
"Hey, uh...maybe some sandwiches, too?" Sam asked.
Becky laughed.
"What do you think this is, hooters?" She walked into the kitchen.
"I wish." Dean said. "What is it?" He asked getting up and going towards his little brother.
"Check this out." Sam said, rewinding the tape, and slowing it down.
Zach went by the frame, but his eyes were glowing.
"Maybe it's just a camera flare." Dean said as Sam had paused it on that image.
"Thats not like any camera flare I've ever seen." Sam stated. "You know, a lot of cultures believe that a photograph can catch a glimpse of the soul." He said.
"Right." Dean nodded, bouncing his little girl in his arms.
"Remember that dog that was freaking out? Maybe he saw this thing." Sam stated. "Maybe this is some kind of dark double of Zachs— something that looks like him but isn't him."
"Like a doppelgänger." Dean said.
"That would sure explain how he was two places at once." Sam stated.
August babbled, reaching for her uncle.
"You wanna go to uncle Sammy?" Dean asked her, gently passing her to Sam.
"Hey, Auggie." Sam chuckled as she reached for his face.
Dean smiled at them.
~~~
"Alright. So what are we doing here at 5:30 in the morning?" Dean questioned his brother after they had just gotten out of the impala.
"I realized something." Sam said. "The videotape shows the killer going in but not coming out." He stated.
"So he came out the back door?" Dean questioned taking a drink of his coffee.
"Right, so there should be a trail to follow— a trail the police would never pursue." Sam said, walking towards a dumpster.
"'Cause they think the killer never left. They caught your friend Zach inside." Dean stated, gently bouncing his sleeping daughter in his arm.
August was asleep, wrapped up in her blanket in deans arm. There was no way he was trying to wake her up at 5:30 in the morning.
"Still don't know what we're doing here at 5:30 in the friggin' morning." Dean stated.
Dean looked down at august who looked very peaceful. She always did when she slept, and Dean figured it was because she couldn't hear everything, so nothing bothered her.
Oh, would he kill to get some sleep like that.
Dean looked up as he saw Sam slow down in the corner of his eye. Sam went across the alley, and over to a wooden light pole that had blood smeared on it.
Sam turned and looked at dean.
"Blood." He stated. "Somebody came this way."
"Maybe the trail ends. I don't see anything over here." Dean said.
They then heard sirens wailing, coming closer, then an ambulance drove past them.
The brother looked at each other.
~~~
They followed the ambulance to a crime scene at another house.
"What happened?" Dean asked a woman who was standing outside the caution tape.
"He tried to kill his wife." She said. "Tied her up and beat her."
"Really?" Sam asked.
"Yeah. I used to see him going to work in the morning. He'd wave, say hello. He seemed like such a nice guy." The woman said as they watched the cops put the man in the cop car.
Sam and Dean looked at each other.
Sam went around back to see if he could find a trail just like he did back at Zachs house.
Sam opened the trash can lids, looking inside.
"Hey!" Dean called out to his brother. "Remember when I said this wasn't our kind of problem?" He said. "Definitely our kind of problem."
"What'd you find out?" Sam asked.
"I talked to the patrolman who first on the scene. He heard this guy Alex's story. Apparently the dude was driving home from a business trip when his wife was attacked." Dean told him.
"He was two places at once." Sam said.
"Exactly. Then he sees himself in the house. Police think he's a nutjob." Dean said.
"Two dark doubles attacking loved ones in exactly the same way." Sam said, walking past dean.
"Could be the same thing doing it, too." Dean stated.
"Shapeshifter?" Sam questioned.
Dean shrugged, definitely suggesting it.
"Something that can make itself look like anyone?" Sam said.
"Every culture in the world has a shapeshifter lore— legends of creatures who can transform themselves into animals or other men." Dean said.
"Skinwalkers. Werewolves." Sam listed off.
"We got two attacked within blocks of each other. I'm guessing we got a shapeshifter problem in the neighborhood." Dean said.
"Let me ask you this." Sam said. "In all this shapeshifter lore, can any of them fly?" He asked, walking back around dean towards where he was looking for a trail.
"Not that I know of." Dean said, shifting his daughter in his arms.
"I picked up a trail here." Sam said. "Someone ran out of the back of this building, headed off this way."
"Just like your friends house." Dean stated.
"Yeah. And just like at Zachs house, the trail suddenly ends. Whatever it is just disappeared." Sam told dean.
"Well, there's another way to go." Dean stated. "Down."
Sam and Dean both looked down and saw a sewer drain.
~~~
After putting August in the impala, the two brothers headed down into the sewers.
Sam followed dean who had already started down the sewer.
"I bet this runs right by Zachs house, too." Sam stated. "The shapeshifter could be using the sewer system to get around." He said.
"I think you're right." Dean said as he saw a pile of something slimy. "Look at this." He started towards it, Sam following him.
Dean got out his pocketknife and stuck the knife into the stuff.
"Is this from his victims?" Sam questioned as dean picked some up on his knife.
"You know, I just had a sick thought." Dean said. "When the shapeshifter changes shape, maybe it sheds." He threw the slime back down into the pile.
"That is sick." Sam stated.
~~~
"Well, one thing I learned from dad—" Dean started as he opened the trunk, holding it open with a shotgun. "No matter what kind of shapeshifter it is, there's one sure way to kill it." He said as he loaded his gun with silver bullets.
"Silver bullet to the heart." Sam said.
"That's right." Dean smirked.
Sams phone then rang, so he dug it out of his pocket and answered it.
"This is Sam." He said.
"Where are you?" Becky asked on the other end.
"We're near Zachs." Sam told her. "We're just checking some things out."
"Well look, just stop, because I really don't need your help anymore." Becky told him.
"What are you talking about?" Sam asked.
"I told the lawyers that we went to the crime scene."
"Why would you do that?"
"I told them that we were with a police officer. And they checked it out, and they told me there is no detective Dean Winchester." Becky stated. "I don't understand why you would lie to me about something like that."
"We were trying to help." Sam said.
"Oh, trying to help? Do you realize that that was a sealed crime scene? This could have just ruined Zachs case."
"Beck, I'm sorry, but—"
"No. Goodbye, Sam."
Becky had hung up the phone, Dean closed the trunk then made his way over to his brother.
"I hate to say it, but that's exactly what I'm talking about." Dean stated. "You lie to your friends because if they knew the real you they'd be freaked. It's just— it'd be easier if—"
"If I was like you." Sam said before dean could finish.
"Hey, man, like it or not, we are not like other people." Dean said. "But I tell you one thing— this whole gig...it ain't without perks." Dean said as he held a gun out to his brother.
Sam sighed before taking it.
Sam started walking but Dean stayed back for a moment as he opened the back door to his daughter.
He leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"We'll be back soon sweetheart." He told her before pulling away and closing the door back.
Sam smiled a little.
~~~
Sam and Dean walked through the sewers with their flashlights. They made their way towards a big pipe that traveled down the sewer and they started walking beside it.
"I think we're close to its lair." Dean stated.
"Why do you say that?" Sam asked.
"'Cause there's another puke-inducing pile next to your face."
Sam turned his head and immediately backed away.
"Oh, god." He groaned.
"It looks like it's lived here for awhile." Dean stated as he saw ripped clothes on top of slimy piles by the wall.
"Who know how many murders he's gotten away with?" Sam said.
Sam then turned and gasped.
"Dean!" He yelled as he saw the shifter behind his brother.
Dean turned and as soon ad he did, the shifter punched him in the face, making him slam into the pipe.
Sam shot at the shifter as it ran away.
"Get the son of a bitch!" Dean told his brother as he grasped his arm in pain.
Sam brushed past dean and went after the shifter. Dean followed after a short second.
Sam pulled himself up out of the sewer as the shifter had climbed up out of it. Dean climbed up out of the sewer, grunting as he did so.
Once both the brother were up, they looked around.
"Alright, let's split up." Sam said.
"Alright. I'll meet you around the other side." Dean said just before they both went off in separate ways.
~~~
"Hey."
Sam turned as he heard his brother call out.
"Anything?" Dean asked as he raised his arms.
"No. He's gone." Sam said.
"Alright. Let's get back to the car." Dean said.
Sam went ahead and crossed the road, but Dean stayed back as a car drove by.
His eyes flashed silver.
"You think he found another way underground?" Sam asked as they approached the impala.
"Probably." 'Dean' shrugged. "You got the keys?"
Sam fished the keys out of his pocket.
"Hey, didn't dad once face a shapeshifter in San Antonio?" Sam asked.
"That was Austin." 'Dean' said. "And it turned out not to be a shapeshifter. It was a thought-form— a psychic projection. Remember?"
"Oh, right." Sam nodded. "Here you go." He tossed dean the keys and he caught them.
Sams eyes shifted to August who was now awake in her car seat. She wasn't crying, she was just laying there, looking around.
'Dean' opened the trunk, and lifted up the other part, seeing all the weapons and all the other supernatural stuff.
"Don't move!" Sam yelled as he aimed his gun at the man. "What have you done with him?"
"Dude, chill. It's me, alright?" 'Dean' stated.
"No, I don't think so. Where's my brother?"
"You're about to shoot him. Sam, calm down." 'Dean' told him.
"You caught those keys with your left. Your shoulder was hurt." Sam stated.
"Yeah. It's better. What you do you want me to do, cry?"
"You're not my brother."
"Why don't you pull the trigger then, Hmm? Because you're not sure. Dude, you know me." 'Dean' stepped closer.
"Don't." Sam warned him.
Out of nowhere, the shifter Dean pulled a metal bar out of the impala and knocked Sam out with it.
He then heard crying coming from inside the impala.
Shifter dean moved around the impala and opened the back door revealing August who was crying, still in her car seat.
'Dean' smirked.
~~~
Sam started waking up and realized he was tied to a post.
Shifter dean then came into the room and Sam looked up at him. The shifter then walked over to Sam and backhanded him.
"Where is he?" Sam demanded. "Where's dean?"
"I wouldn't worry about him. I'd worry about you and the baby." The shifter stated, gesturing to Sam and the baby carrier Sam had failed to notice beforehand.
August was awake, looking around with curiosity.
"Leave her alone." Sam told the shifter. "Where is dean?"
"You don't really want to know." The shifter said. "I swear, the more I learn about you and your family...I thought I came from a bad background."
"What do you mean, learn?" Sam questioned.
The shifter looked at the knife in his hands, then over at Sam just before he grasped his head in slight pain.
The shifter then put his fist to his mouth, then looked over at Sam.
"He's sure got issues with you." He stated. "You got to go to college. He had to stay home." The shifter raised his arms a little. "I mean I had to stay home— with dad, and Delilah, with little Auggie on the way. You don't think I had dreams of my own? But dad needed me, Delilah needed me. Where the hell were you?"
"Where is my brother?" Sam demanded.
"I'm your brother." The shifter got down to Sams level. "See, deep down...I'm just jealous. You got friends. You could have a life. Me, I know I'm a freak. And sooner or later, everybody's gonna leave me."
"What are you talking about?" Sam asked.
"You left. Then Delilah dies because August came along, and hell, I did everything dad asked me to, and he ditched me, too." Shifter Dean stated. "No explanation. Nothing. Just— poof. Left me with your sorry ass and a whiny ass baby." He said then got up, grabbing a tarp. "But still, this life, it's not without its perks. I meet the nicest people." He chuckled. "Like little Becky. You know Dean would bang her if he had the chance. Only thing keeping him from doing so is her." The shifter looked towards the baby carrier. "Let's see what happens." He then threw the tarp over Sam.
~~~
"Damn it." Sam grunted as he tried untying himself, the tarp had fallen down uncovering his head. "Hang on august, it'll be okay." He told the baby.
"That'd better be you, Sam, and not tay freak of nature." Deans voice came from the other side of the room.
Sam chuckled.
"Yeah, it's me. Auggie's here too." Sam told him.
"Oh, god, is she okay?" Dean frantically asked.
"Yeah, she's okay, he didn't hurt her, but he went to Rebecca's, looking like you." Sam explained.
"Well, he's not stupid. He picked the handsome one." Dean joked.
~~~
"Yeah, that's the thing. He didn't just look like you, he was you. Or he was becoming you." Sam said as dean had just cut his ropes on the post he was tied to.
"What do you mean?" Dean asked as he was untangling his ropes.
"I don't know." Sam sighed. "It's like he was downloading your thoughts and memories. He knew about Delilah."
Dean froze, his eyes glossing over a little. He thought about her everyday, especially when he saw August which was 100% of the time. He missed her.
"You mean like the Vulcan mind-meld?" Dean questioned, clearing his throat.
"Yeah. Something like that." Sam nodded. "I mean, maybe that's why he didn't just kill us."
Dean sighed as he finally got his ropes off, and got up. He stepped over wires of all sorts and ran to August first of course.
"Hey, babygirl." Dean smiled at her as he crouched down to the carrier. "It's okay, daddy's got you." He grabbed the carrier and stood up with it.
"Maybe he needs to keep us alive— a psychic connection." Dean said as he made his way over to his brother.
"Hands." Sam told his brother as Dean set the carrier down and started untying him. "Come on. We got to go. He's probably at Rebeccas already." Sam said.
~~~
"Come on. We got to find a phone. Call the police." Sam said as he crawled out of the vent.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa." Dean said as he handed Sam the baby carrier. "You're gonna put an APB out on me." He stated, out of breath.
"Sorry." Sam apologized, giving dean the carrier back.
"This way." Dean brushed past his brother and headed down the alley, Sam followed after him.
~~~
Sam and Dean stood in front of a tv shop that was playing the news, Dean was still holding August who was wide awake in her carrier.
A hand drawn picture of dean popped up on all the tv screens.
"Man! It's not even a good picture." Dean complained.
August clapped her hands and giggled, reaching towards the tv.
"If your ten month old daughter can tell that's you, it's good enough." Sam stated.
"Man." Dean huffed and followed Sam across the street.
They headed into another alley, and Dean stepped in a puddle, having no shoes on.
"Aw, come on!" Dean groaned.
"They said attempted murder, at least we know—" Sam started.
"I didn't kill her!" Dean stated.
"I'll check in with Rebecca in the morning to see if she's alright." Sam said.
"Alright, first I want to find that handsome devil and kick the holy crap out of him." Dean told his brother.
"We have no weapons. No silver bullets." Sam stated.
"Sam, the guys walking around with my face, okay? It's a little personal. I want to find him." Dean said, obviously aggravated.
"Okay. Where do we look?" Sam asked.
"We could start with the sewers." Dean said.
"We have no weapons." Sam said again. "He stole our guns. We need more." He then was quiet for a moment. "The car?" He asked.
"I'm betting he drove over to Rebeccas." Dean said.
"The news said he fled on foot. I bet it's still parked there." Sam said.
"Oh, the thought of him driving my car." Dean said in a low voice.
"Aw, come on." Sam rolled his eyes.
"It's killing me." Dean stated.
"Let it go." Sam told him.
~~~
Sam and Dean rounded the corner and Dean let out a breath when they saw the impala.
"Ah!" He chuckled. "There she is." He sighed as they headed towards the car. "Finally, something went right tonight."
Dean had spoken too soon, and a cop car came to a stop right up the road with its sirens on.
"Oh, crap." Dean muttered as they turned to go the other way, but another cop car was right up the road and the one back by the impala had turned around towards them.
"This way. This way!" Dean rushed past his brother.
"You go. I'll hold them off." Sam said.
"What are you talking about, they'll catch you." Dean stated.
"They can't hold me! Just go. Keep out of sight." Sam told him, holding his hand out for the baby carrier.
Dean hesitated for a moment.
"Okay, I love you, Auggie, be good for uncle Sammy." Dean kissed the baby's forehead, before handing the carrier to his brother.
"Meet me at Rebeccas." Sam said as dean jumped up on the fence. "Dean, stay out of the sewers alone!"
Dean then jumped over the fence.
"I mean it!" Sam yelled at his brother.
"Yeah! Yeah!" Dean yelled.
"Don't move!" The cops aimed their guns at Sam. "Keep your hands where I can see them!"
Sam turned and gently set the baby carrier down beside him, then raised his hands.
~~~
August slept in her carrier while Sam sat on the couch with an empty beer bottle in his hands, talking to Becky.
"So say this shapeshifter is real, by the way, you know you're crazy. But um, say it is real. How do you stop it?" Becky asked handing Sam another beer.
"Thanks." Sam took the beer. "Silver bullet to the heart." Sam answered, giving Becky the empty bottle.
"You are crazy." Becky raised the empty bottle just before smashing it over Sams head, knocking him out.
Her eyes flashed silver.
~~~
Sam started to wake up, the shifter had gone back to Deans form.
"What are you gonna do to me?" Sam questioned.
"I'm not gonna do anything." Shifter Dean said. "Dean will, though." He went through the drawers in the kitchen.
"They'll never catch him." Sam said.
"Oh, doesn't matter." The shifter said. "Murder in the first of his own brother, and god, he would be the most hated man in the world if he killed his own baby." He stated. "He'll be hunted the rest of his life." The shifter said as he picked up a kitchen knife.
Sam looked up as he heard August whining.
"Calm down, Auggie, it's okay." Sam told her.
"I must say...I will be sorry to lose this skin. Your brothers got a lot of good qualities. You should appreciate him more than you do." The shifter said as Sam was now laying on his back on the floor. "Cheers." He took a swig of whatever alcohol he just poured into a glass.
The shifter then set the cup down and grabbed a knife. He then stabbed it into the pool table.
Sam looked around for a moment, he then kicked the shifter in the legs and got up quickly, using the knife to cut his ropes.
Once his hand were free, he grabbed the knife out of the pool table and swung it at the shifter who had gotten up and came towards him.
Shifter dean grabbed Sams arms, holding the knife back. He then flipped Sam over him onto the floor.
"You son of a bitch." The shifter came towards Sam again.
The two began fighting again, punching and kicking, the shifter pinned Sams arm behind his back.
Sam managed to turn it the other way around.
"Not bad, little brother." The shifter laughed.
"You're not him." Sam stated.
The shifter then elbowed sam in the face, making him fall backwards against the couch, August started crying.
The shifter once again came for Sam, but Sam turned, punching him in the face. Shifter dean immediately punched back and knees Sam in the stomach, then he kicked him into the shelf causing all the books and shelves to fall on top of him.
"Even when we were kids, I always kicked your ass." Shifter Dean said as he grabbed a pool stick, and Sam was crawling up.
Once Sam stood up, the shifter swung the stick at him, in which he managed to dodge. The shifter kept swinging at Sam, and knocked the lights out.
August:"s crying got louder. The shifter smirked and looked towards the girl just before starting towards her.
"No!" Sam yelled and grabbed the shifter, punching him, the shifter grabbed Sams arm and punched him in the face.
The shifter punched at Sam a few more times, but Sam somehow dodged every punch.
The two were now facing each other, and both put their fists up. Shifter dean took the first punch and a short fist fight broke out.
The shifter then tackled Sam over the couch, breaking the coffee table as they landed on it.
The shifter being on top of Sam, punched him in the face repeatedly, then he grabbed him by the neck, choking him.
Sam reached up, trying to grab at the shifters face trying to get him off of him.
"Hey!"
The shifter turned his head slightly just before quickly getting up off of Sam and turning to see dean aiming his gun at him.
Sam laid on the floor, exhausted. The shifter looked towards the baby carrier and Dean saw it.
Just as the shifter ran towards the carrier, dean shot it, it went flying into the wall, and Dean shot it again three more times.
Becky then rushed in behind dean. Dean rushed to his little girl.
"August!" He yelled as he quickly got down to the crying baby. "It's okay, daddy's here!" He unbuckled her and took her out of the carrier, holding her close to his chest. "Daddy's got you, you're okay." He gently bounced her in his arms.
"Sam!" Becky rushed to her friend to help him off the floor.
Deans eyes trailed to the dead shifter who was still in his form. He then made his way over to him, and grabbed the amulet from around its neck, then pulled it off.
"That belongs to me." Dean stated as held the amulet tight in his hand, he kissed his baby's head as she had just started to calm down.
~~~
Dean was wearing the baby harness and that's where August had stayed ever since the shifter was killed.
Dean wasn't letting his baby out of his sight no matter what.
Dean placed the map against the hood of the car as August babbled to herself.
Dean heard the front door of the house open, he turned and saw Becky and Sam coming out.
"So this is what you do?" Becky asked Sam. "You and your brother, you hunt down these kinds of things?"
"Yeah, pretty much." Sam stated with a chuckle.
"I can't believe it." Becky said. "I mean, I saw it with my own eyes, and...I mean, does everybody at school— nobody knows that you do this?" She asked.
"No." Sam shook his head.
"Did Jessica know?" Becky asked.
"No, she didn't." Sam let out a soft sigh.
"It must be lonely." Becky said.
"Oh, no. No, it's not so bad. Anyway, what can I do? It's my family." Sam stated, looking towards dean who was babbling back to August, who was laughing at him.
Becky chuckled and smiled at the father and daughter before looking to Sam.
"Well, you know, Zach and me and everybody at school, we really miss you." Becky told Sam and pulled him into a hug, in which of course he hugged her back.
"Yeah. Me too." Sam nodded.
"Well, will you call sometime?" Becky asked as they pulled away from each other.
"It might not be for a little while." Sam said truthfully.
Becky chuckled and nodded, she then waved to Dean and august.
Dean smiled and gently took August's wrist and made her wave.
"Say bye!" Dean smiled at the baby. "Say bye bye, Becky!"
Becky couldn't help but smile, and neither could Sam. Becky smiled at Sam once last time before going into the house.
Sam sighed and made his way over to his brother and niece.
"So what about your friend Zach?" Dean asked.
"The cops are blaming this Dean Winchester guy for Emily's murder." Sam told him. "Found the murder weapon in the guys lair, Zachs clothes stained with her blood. Now they're thinking maybe the surveillance tape was tampered with. Yeah, Becca says Zach will be released soon." Sam said.
Dean made a face and nodded, opening August's door, he took her out of the harness and put her in her car seat, buckling her in.
"I love you very much, August Jude." Dean told her and kissed her forehead twice, she smiled and reached up to him.
Dean smiled at her before backing out and closing the door. He then got into the drivers seat, next to Sam who was already buckled up into the passenger seat.
After a few minutes of driving, Dean spoke up.
"Sorry, man." He apologized to his little brother.
"About what?" Sam asked.
"I really wish things could be different, you know? I wish you could just be Joe college." Dean said.
"Aw, it's okay." Sam said. "You know, truth is, even at stanford, deep down, I never really fit in." He stated.
"Well, that's because you're a freak." Dean said.
"Yeah. Thanks." Sam chuckled.
"Well, I'm a freak, too." Dean stated. "I'm right there with you all the way."
"Yeah, I know you are." Sam smiled.
"You know, I got to say, I'm sorry I'm gonna miss it." Dean said making sam look over at him.
"Miss what?" Sam questioned.
"How many chances am I gonna have to see my own funeral?"
Sam smiled a little and glanced up into the rearview mirror.
Dean chuckled and sped down the road.
