POV: 3rd person
It was a quiet morning in Genome Tower. The summer sun blazing it's blinding light in the distance. Iride and the others were gathered in the common room.
"Damnit! Why's it so damn hot in here?" Anya complained, trying to cool himself down by airing out his shirt, "I'm literally sweating buckets over here!"
"We're all in the same boat Anboy," said Yuzu, who was in the middle of braiding Karin's hair, "it seems the A/C is down."
Anya clicked his tongue, "Stupid alpaca-idiot! The least he could do is make sure his damn
A/C works!"
"Well, I'm sure Paca is doing his best." Iride said considerately. He was fanning a sleeping Makino with a paper fan that he had made earlier.
"Leave it to you to always stick up for him.."
"Kai-san, aren't you hot in that kimono?" asked Yuzu.
"I'm used to it it." Kaikoku merely shrugged.
"Ding dong ding fuweeh ~"
"Well, speak of the devil." Kaikoku commented. Anya rolled his eyes.
"I hope everyone's doing well on this especially warm summer morning." Paca's voice said through the P/A system.
"Unfortunately due to tower malfunctions, it just so happens that the air conditioning is down."
" 'Just so happens'? I bet he planned it all along.." Karin muttered.
"Luckily, tower maintenance is working on it as we speak. So please bear with me."
"Also because of our circumstances, I decided that everyone shall take a break from the games for the day. You're welcome in advance."
A vein began to pulsate on Anya's forehead. "Why you-
"Have a wonderful day everyone!"
And with that, the announcement concluded.
"Stuck up bastard." Anya cursed.
"Well, that's just how it is." said Yuzu, "Let's just make the best of our current situation."
"Breakfast is ready!" came Himiko's voice from the kitchen.
As everyone made their way to the table, Kaikoku came up to Iride.
"Hey Iride, do you know where Oshigiri is?" He asked him.
"Ah, I think he's still asleep in his room." Iride answered. "He said that he'll join us later."
Kaikoku wore a blank expression. Zakuro never slept in this late. He would always wake up early and visit Kaikoku's room out of habit. What happened today?
Ah, there I go thinking like him, Kaikoku thought, I'm sure he's fine.
"I see." He answered.
A few rooms down, Zakuro lied in bed.
His arm rested on his forehead as he stared, wide awake, at the ceiling in silence. The silence eventually broke with a small jingle that came from his hand.
Zakuro took his eyes off the ceiling and directed his gaze to the source of the jingle. The bracelet which had the engraving of his twin sister's name on it layed caressed in his palm.
He had found that bracelet during the ogre elimination stage a few games back. It was the only actual clue he had found since arriving here that could potentially lead him to his sister. But his hopes were in vain when the demon girl from the game told him that she wasn't there.
Paca was no help either. Zakuro had tried to get answers out of him but he insisted on not knowing anything. So he was back at square one.
This didn't make Zakuro want to give up on his sister. After all, the only reason why he played this game in the first place was to go after her. But deep inside lurked a slight hopelessness. He was completely lost.
He closed his eyes and tightened his grip on the bracelet. "Sakura.." He thought out loud, "Where could you be?"
....
Zakuro found his mind bringing him to a nearby police station. There sat two male officers at their desks, one with a cup of coffee in his hand.
"Ah, you again.." The man with the coffee said.
There at the entrance stood a boy who looked as though he was in his freshman year of high school. He stared at the ground, his hair covering his face. The two officers noticed that he was wearing a mask that day to cover his bandaged lip,
"Please." The boy said.
The man with the coffee put his drink down, "Sorry kid, we haven't heard back from the search party yet. You're gonna have to be patient.
The boy looked up, his purple eyes filled with sternness but also pain,
"Please! She's been missing for three weeks now! I can't wait any longer!"
The other man sighed and pushed away the files that were in front of him,
"We're doing all that we can. I'm afraid we can't do any more. You just have to wait."
The boy clenched his shaking hands into a fist and dropped his gaze.
Then the scene started to ripple, and the voice of a young girl took over.
"Zakuro."
.
.
.
"Zakuro!"
Zakuro eyes shot open and he immediately sat upright,
"Sakura!?"
He looked around his room, panting as he did it. Zakuro looked at his palm and there layed his sister's bracelet.
He clutched his aching head and tried to get his breathing under control. Processing what exactly just happened.
"Just a dream.." He said to himself, shakily.
Then came a knock on his bedroom door.
"Oshigiri?" came Iride's voice.
Zakuro closed his fingers around the bracelet and stuffed it under the blanket,
"C-Come in..!"
The door opened and just as Zakuro thought, Iride came through it.
"Hey!" He said to him, "Everyone was wondering where you were."
"Ah I.. sorry.. I was just tired and I wanted to sleep more.."
Then came a sharp pain in Zakuro's head. He let out a small cry and clutched it once more.
"Are you alright?" Iride asked worriedly.
"I-I'm fine.. It's just a migraine.."
Iride came by Zakuro's bed, which made Zakuro slightly uncomfortable.
"You sure? Come to think of it, you look kind of pale.."
"It's alright. I'm okay." Zakuro reassured him, slightly embarrassed that Iride was worried about a small headache. "A painkiller should help it."
"Alright, but don't push yourself okay? Be sure to take it easy today."
"Don't worry. Really. I'll be fine."
Zakuro got out of bed and followed Iride to the common room. Everyone was still in the middle of eating breakfast.
Anya looked up from his plate and saw the two boys come in. "Oi! Took you long enough V-Neck!"
"We were all worried Zakkun." said Yuzu.
"S-Sorry.. I didn't feel very well."
"Oh my!" Himiko said, "Are you sick?"
"No no! It's just a small headache! It's nothing serious."
"Well you should at least eat something." said Karin.
"Karirin's right!" said Yuzu, "Himi made pancakes and they're absolutely amazing! She even made one shaped like Akki!"
"I've also made pudding too! There's plenty!" Himiko said with a smile.
"Well, Karin-san was the one who suggested it." Iride pointed out.
"W-What's that supposed to mean!??" Karin asked, blushing with embarrassment.
Zakuro couldn't help but smile at his fellow gamers. He took a seat next to Kaikoku and joined them for the lovely meal Himiko had prepared for them.
After they were done, they all resumed to their normal day activities. Kaikoku and Zakuro both took a seat on the couch and watched everyone's shenanigans.
"Oh right," said Kaikoku, "Paca said the games were suspended today cause of the weather. So we all have the day off."
"Really? I did notice it being more warmer than usual.."
Silence fell between the two boys and Zakuro proceeded to be lost in his thoughts.
That dream.. That happened two years ago.. Why did I have it now?
What does it mean..
Once again, the sharp pain in Zakuro's head pierced him like before. Kaikoku looked over at him, concerned.
"Hey are you-
"I'm fine." Zakuro replied, almost too quickly. He got up from the couch, averting his eyes away from him. "I-I'm gonna go take a walk.."
"Um.. Okay.." Kaikoku said. Without another word, Zakuro left the room.
Zakuro made his way outside in the forest in which everyone first arrived in. He saw Pantarou walking along the trees, although he wasn't doing a very good job of trying not to knock them over due to his size. Zakuro started to remember the time everyone first met, and how annoying Anya was that day.
Nothing's really changed..
Zakuro thought.
He also remembered his times with Kaikoku. How they ventured to the 50th floor and got caught by Paca, how they worked together to go save Iride and Karin from the demons, their time in the Onsen..
It still wondered him how fast they became friends. Although, he had no idea how much of a handful he was at the time.
Jeez.. Onigasaki really needs to learn to take better care of himself..
Despite being complete opposites, they really did share great times together. For the reason of that was something even Zakuro didn't know. Maybe their relationship worked just as much as Iride and Anya's did. Or maybe he just saw Kaikoku as a cool guy who generally seemed easy to talk to.
Or maybe it was his recklessness.. and his stubbornness
"Come on Zakuro.. Sakura isn't a little kid anymore!"
"Seriously Oshigiri, you don't need to follow me around all the time."
Zakuro stopped dead in his tracks. "Wait.. Did I just see Onigasaki in Sakura?" He asked, bewildered
Zakuro shook his head and looked down at the grass. He was then reminded of his twin sister once more, "Sakura.."
Suddenly that green grass on the ground started to blend together. Zakuro blinked a few times and it was back to normal.
"Weird.. What was that?" He asked, confused,
Zakuro decided to not think too much about it and continued walking. The area started to have less and less trees as he walked and he found himself trudging along a hiking trail that seemed to be leading towards a mountain as the blazing sun shone.
How long have I been walking for?
It seemed as though it kept getting hotter and hotter the more he walked. Zakuro was practically drenched in sweat. Although his headache was going away, he still wanted to walk more.
Zakuro continued to drag himself through the forest in the sweltering heat, at a much slower pace then when he started. He couldn't help but think about his dream. Something just seemed off about it, it bothered him so much.
He didn't want to bother Iride and the others about it when he was back in the tower. Something just made Zakuro feel that he shouldn't feel the need to worry everyone. Although, Kaikoku did seem suspicious when he suddenly left like that.
Suddenly Zakuro heard a voice call out to him from behind.
"Zakuro! Zakuro!!" The voice had said. Something about it seemed strangely familiar.
Zakuro's eyes widened and he spun around, hoping to see if his suspicions were correct. "Sakura?! Is that you!?"
He turned to see that no one was there. Zakuro's heart sank.
"Of course she isn't there. What was I thinking?" He said to himself, "I think all this heat is making me delirious.."
Zakuro brought his hand to his head, "I came out here to clear my head.. Not to ponder on things more.."
As he turned back around, Zakuro felt a wave of exhaustion coming over him, almost making him lose balance. He caught himself and clutched his head, which was throbbing even harder than before.
"What.. the..?"
He tried to regain focus. Although his vision was starting to blur. The trees around him started to ripple and Zakuro could feel his legs turn into jelly.
In the distance was a figure coming towards him, although his vision was so blurry he couldn't tell who it was.
"S-Sakura..?" He whispered.
Before he could understand what was happening, he fell to the ground and blacked out.
Miles away from him, everyone was gathered in the common room, unaware of Zakuro's situation. Iride stood looking out the window as everyone sat around him with worried expressions.
"Zakkun has been gone for a long time hasn't he.." Yuzu said
"Is Oshigiri coming back?" Kaikoku asked Iride.
"I don't see him.." Iride said unseasy.
Everyone went silent.
"The sun is about to set.." Karin pointed out.
"What if something happened to him?" Himiko asked, worriedly
"That dude has a knife and a pissy attitude with him," Anya said, "I think he'll be fine."
"Either way, someone should go after him." Yuzu said, "He could be in trouble."
Kaikoku stood up. "I'll go." He said, "I know my way around the forest."
At those words, Anya stood up as well. "Hold on a second, what if you get lost too?" He said. Makino put his hand on Anya's shoulder, which Anya did not expect.
"Makino-san?" said Iride
"Zakuro-kun." Makino said as he stared into Kaikoku's eyes. "Please find him."
-
"Zakuro! Zakuro, look! A kitty!"
"Ya know, when Sakura gets her own house, she's gonna have lots and lots of cats!"
"And Zakuro can come over every day and we can play with them!"
"You should play games with me more Zakuro, we can stream together!"
"I found this really good one, it's called "The Ones Within". We should play it sometime!"
There, two years ago, stood a younger version of Zakuro. Staring at the computer screen which bore the same unchanged words from when it first appeared before.
"Congratulations! You have been invited to participate in the closed stage of the game 'The Ones Within - Genome'! "
"We look forward to meeting you."
"Sakura."
"Where oh where have you gone..?"
-
The figure in which Zakuro mistaken for his sister before emerged from the trees. Paca walked over to Zakuro and looked down on him. Zakuro's body was crumpled on the ground, unchanged from when he collapsed earlier.
Paca slightly knelt down to the unconscious Zakuro, "Poor Mr. Oshigiri. it seems you didn't heed my warning of the brutal heat earlier.."
"Unfortunately, I didn't bring any medical supplies with me. I'm sure one of your friends will come to your aid soon." He assured him and straightened. Paca was about to leave when he noticed the bracelet caressed in Zakuro's shaking hand.
Paca seemed to put two and two together and came to a realization. "Ah.. I understand.. your dropout sister.."
"Quite a stubborn, reckless young lady if I've ever seen one. One who loved to explore. Mr. Onigasaki would've gotten along quite well with her." Paca laughed to himself.
"Strange.. When I met you I expected you to be a lot more like her. Being twins and all. To my surprise you seemed to be quite the opposite. You must've taken care of her well like you do with your comrades.." He smiled.
"Although don't you think your going a little too far? Worrying yourself a little too much for her. Your friends are worrying about you too. Seems reckless no?"
Zakuro's expression remained unchanged.
"Hm.. You two really are related after all huh.." and with that Paca turned away from him and disappeared into the trees.
-
The younger version of Zakuro sat at the foot of his computer, browsing through online articles and newspaper issues. In the background was a report about the missing kids' case.
"Quite extraordinary how these kids just disappeared in a blink of an eye!" exclaimed on reporter from the broadcast.
The game developers haven't posted anything since the release of the game.. Nothing about the missing people...
Zakuro narrowed his eyes.
What are they planning..
A photograph of the two siblings stood, ninth grade Zakuro stared at the picture grimly,
The police aren't getting back to me...
My parents want to drop the case..
..They think I'm crazy...
"Zakuro... Honey.. Please.. We're worried about you.."
What about Sakura?
"You have been hulled in your room for hours.. Please just take a break.."
I can't take a break.. I have to be close
"Focus on school. Focus on your health."
Forget school. Forget my health..
Suddenly, Zakuro came to a realization. And without really registering what he was doing, he found himself opening the "The Ones Within - Genome" game page.
He stared at the computer and shook his head.
What am I thinking.. I can't possibly play this cursed game..
It started to get dark out. Zakuro was about to close the webpage and call it a night, when a part of his heart suddenly grew hesitant.
But.. People started to go missing after playing it... Sakura too..
If that's the case...then...
Zakuro opened the game web browser once more and entered a user.
Mom.. Dad.. Im sorry..
He hit 'enter'
Maybe I am just as crazy as you think..
Meanwhile, Kaikoku was sprinting through the forest, looking for Zakuro. He looked around in all directions, hoping to at least catch sight of him.
"Oshigiri! Oshigiri!" He called, his voice echoing through the forest
No reply.
This made Kaikoku slightly more on edge. There's no way Zakuro couldn't hear him. In fact, he was 99% sure Zakuro memorized his voice since he was always on his tail. Which made it even creepier for Kaikoku, given Zakuro's stealth abilities.
Now to have Zakuro not with him every second of the day, and his strange behaviour this morning, really made Kaikoku worry.
Don't think about that now, Kaikoku told himself, Just look for Oshigiri...
Further and further, Kaikoku went deeper into the forest. The trail started to turn into dirt and rocks, not as much grass, and the number of trees started to minimize to make way for the mountains in the distance; which was helpful for Kaikoku to search since the place won't be as cluttered.
How far out did he go? I'm practically at the edge of the island!
Kaikoku continued along the path when he suddenly noticed a human figure resting on the rocky path of a short cliff slightly above him. Once he saw his familiar jacket and the mask he was wearing, Kaikoku immediately knew who it was.
"Oshigiri!!" Kaikoku called out to him.
Kaikoku climbed and ran to him and surely enough, there lied Zakuro, sweating, panting and shaking. Kaikoku knelt down to him to check his pulse, when a small, familiar metal chain caught his eye as he grabbed onto Zakuro's wrist. Zakuro twin sister's bracelet layed in his sweaty palm, the name plate facing upward. Kaikoku looked at it's name grimly, but that wasn't the issue he should be concerned with yet.
He pressed his index finger against the vein on Zakuro's wrist. Thankfully, he was breathing fine and his pants weren't him gasping for air. Kaikoku then put a palm on Zakuro's forehead and sure enough, it was burning hot.
That idiot, he's even wearing his jacket and mask in this brutal weather, no wonder he had a heat stroke
Although, Kaikoku couldn't find it in himself be too mad at him. Not with the painful expression Zakuro was wearing as he lied there, shivering and tense on the grass. Kaikoku let out a sigh and grabbed Zakuro's arm, pulling him onto his own shoulders.
Hang in there Oshigiri...
-
Well.. I made it to the end..
Zakuro's computer went black. Text started appearing on the screen, word by word. Zakuro practically knew this message by heart.
" Congratulations!_
Here it comes..
"You have been invited to participate in the closed stage of the game 'The Ones Within - Genome'!_ "
For everyone that thought I was crazy
For everyone that begged me to stop
For everyone that told me this was a lost cause
...maybe there was something wrong with me...
And at times I did tell myself that I should stop..
But... I couldn't bring myself to...
I wouldn't be satisfied otherwise..
He took a glimpse of the photograph on his desk. This being the last time he'll probably see it again.
I couldn't give up on you...
I can't give up on you..
I want to be with you..
I want to grow with you..
I want to play with you..
I want to see your smile...
Maybe I'm just being selfish but...
I can't lose you..
So.. That's why-
"We look forward to meeting you._"
"This is it.." Zakuro said. Honestly speaking, Zakuro had no idea what was ahead of him.. but he didn't find it in himself to really care.
He took one last glance of his room. The memories he made here and in this house all came flashing back. Zakuro tried to block them out. He didn't need any possible distractions.
He closed his eyes and took a deep, shaky breath.
Sakura.. I'm coming for you..
....
"Oshigiri-san! Hang on!" a voice rang in Zakuro's head.
W-What..?
Now this seemed different. Zakuro wasn't in his flashback anymore. Instead he found himself lying in a room full of darkness.
"Zakkun can you hear us?" came another
W-Who is that...?
"Oi! Pull it together!!"
"Oshigiri-san, please wake up!"
"Zakuro-kun..."
These voices...sound..familiar..
"Oshigiri!"
Suddenly a figure immersed from the darkness. The figure of a girl who was basically Zakuro's spitting image stood there, smiling a smile that Zakuro knew way too well.
"Zakuro..!" The girl called to him. Her voice a little softer then the previous ones.
"S-Saku-
"OSHIGIRI!"
Zakuro snapped back into reality and his eyes shot open. He blinked a few times and there above him was the ceiling of Genome Tower.
"H-How did I..." his voice faltered when he turned his head to see the faces of his fellow gamers, all gathered around him with worried looks on their faces.
"Oshigiri! Thank goodness! You're awake!" Iride said, relieved.
Zakuro reaches for his head, and picked up a cold wet cloth that was resting on it, "W-What happened...?"
"Y-You had a heat s-stroke.." Himiko explained, as she helped him sit up, "O-Onigasaki-san thankfully found you and brought you back t-to the tower.."
"H-Heat stroke..?" Zakuro repeated, completely dazed, he looked over at Kaikoku, "Onigasaki found me..?"
"Bastard! What were you thinking! Going out for a walk in this heat!" Anya scolded.
"Now now Anboy, you can chew him out later," Yuzu said, she was busily folding Zakuro's jacket neatly and putting it aside, "for now let's let him rest."
Zakuro looked down guiltily, "I-I'm sorry I made you all worry... "
"Well never mind that now." Karin said, "We're just glad your okay.."
"Glad that...Zakuro-kun..is okay.." Makino repeated Karin's words as he pulled Zakuro in for a hug as if he were comforting him.
"A-Aikawa-!" Zakuro turned red from embarrassment.
"Just take it easy okay?" Iride told him with a smile.
Makino let go of him and Zakuro nodded, still slightly blushing, "Yeah.. I understand.."
"Well! We'll leave you to rest then Zakkun!" Yuzu said.
"We'll be back soon to check on you." Himiko told him, Zakuro nodded.
"Gosh what a pain.." Anya said, irritated.
A vein began to pulsate on Zakuro forehead, "Y-You-!"
Yuzu pushed Anya out the door with her and the other gamers followed. Although Kaikoku stayed behind.
"I need to talk to Oshigiri for a sec." he said
Talk..?"
Zakuro felt slightly a little nervous for what Kaikoku wanted to say to him. He had a feeling he wanted to discuss about this morning and his behaviour.
"Alright Kai-san! You two boys do your thing, we'll meet you later~!" called Yuzu,
"Yeah, okay." Kaikoku closed the door,
The two boys then sat in silence, until eventually Zakuro broke it.
"You...want to..talk to me..?" Zakuro asked him slowly.
"Yeah.. you were acting strange this morning.. you.. wanna talk about it..?"
Zakuro looked down once more, "Sorry.. I just had a weird dream is all..."
"Hm.. I see." Kaikoku took out a familiar chain from his pocket and started to swing it around in between his fingers, Zakuro looked up, shocked, and immediately knew what it was.
Zakuro frantically checked his pockets and for sure the bracelet wasn't with him, "H-How did you-
Kaikoku caught the bracelet in his palm, "You were thinking about your sister again.."
Zakuro said nothing.
Kaikoku looked at him and sighed, "Jeez Oshigiri.. don't think you can leave yourself in the dark like this.. we were seriously worried about you.."
"I'm sorry..." Zakuro said remorsefully, "I had a dream this morning... it bugged me so much that I wasn't really thinking... it got me thinking that...after all I've done...I'm nowhere close to finding her..."
Kaikoku put his back against the wall and slumped down beside him, "Hey, don't be so hard on yourself. You're doing the best you could.."
Zakuro bit his lip, "Its not good enough..."
All the pleas his parents told him to stop looking for her, all those denials for continuing the case the police officers gave him all came flooding into Zakuro's mind once more, taunting him and Zakuro always felt so angry with them that they would give up on Sakura so fast. But now he's starting to think that maybe.. they were right.
He burried his face in his hands, frustrated with himself. "I really am just crazy.."
Kaikoku put a hand on his shoulder, "Oshigiri... you're doing all that you can.. you can't expect yourself to do any more."
"So you're telling me to give up to!?" Zakuro snapped at him, unintentionally but he was so angry with himself he couldn't hold it back.
"Hey calm down okay? I didn't say that. All I'm saying is, just accept it. You're only doing so much. Getting mad at yourself will not bring your sister back. If anything, it's going to get you nowhere. You need to work together with your mind and only then will you come to a solution."
"And besides, who's to say your alone in this? We're here, all seven of us. Don't think you can carry all that weight on your own, we're a team aren't we?
Zakuro tried to calm down a little bit, ""I-I'm sorry I lashed out on you.." he apologized.
"Don't worry about it. So as long as you get it. Look, don't make me sound even more like Iride and just accept it okay?" Kaikoku said.
Zakuro couldn't help but crack a small grin at that last part. All that motivation did not seem like Kaikoku's style at all, but it was just what he needed to hear.
"Thanks.. Onigasaki.."
"Yeah yeah,"
Zakuro could've sworn he noticed Kaikoku smiling to himself a bit. Maybe he was just smirking like he always did, but something in Zakuro told him that smile was a lot more than his usual aloof one.
Kaikoku hoisted himself up and made his way to the door. "You should get some rest now, tomorrow the games are gonna resume. So I best for you to try and recover for tomorrow."
Zakuro nodded. Kaikoku was about to turn the handle but Zakuro stopped him.
"Wait- Onigasaki."
Kaikoku turned, "Hm?"
"T-Thanks... and.. tell everyone thanks as well.."
Kaikoku grinned his normal grin and left the room.
Zakuro felt a lot more better throughout the evening. His headaches seemed to have left since his heatstroke. Although, everyone still wanted him to rest more for the night until he felt fully recovered in the morning once the games resumed.
He layed there on the futon and stared at the ceiling, clutching onto his sisters bracelet. He found himself carrying it a lot more frequently today, as if part of Sakura was always with him. Reassuring him, and reminding him that somewhere out there.. she was here on this island.
Zakuro sighed and held his hand up to the room light. The light reflected the metal chain and the name plate illuminated.
Sakura... wherever you are..
I hope... that you are well..

Deep under the depths of Genome Tower, Nanami, Chihiro and Sakura were patrolling the underground corridors, searching for supplies they could potentially use.
As Sakura was unscrewing a metal part from a broken machine she was taking apart, she felt a strange feeling.
Chihiro noticed she stopped working and looked over at her, "Hey.. Sakura? You okay..?"
Sakura snapped back into reality and looked at him, "A-Ah.. nothing.." she looked back at her work, "sorry I.. I just had the feeling someone was talking about me..."
"Don't think too much of it Sakura, it's probably nothing." Nanami reassured her.
"Y-Yeah, you're right." Sakura smiled at him, although part of her still did feel unsure. She dug her hand into one of her jacket pockets just to make sure she still had it with her. She pulled out a small piece of paper and unfolded it to reveal a picture of a younger version of her and her twin brother Zakuro.
"Sakura!" Chihiro called. Sakura was so zoned out she didn't even realize that Nanami and him were getting ready to leave.
"Coming!" She took one last look at the photograph in her hand. She stared at it sadly.
Yeah.. I'm sure it was nothing...
